    Land classification for the Clarence-Moreton preliminary assessment extent

    ## **Abstract** \n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme. This dataset was derived from multiple datasets. You can find a link to the parent datasets in the Lineage Field in this metadata statement. The History Field in this metadata statement describes how this dataset was derived\n\n\n\nShapefile defining landscape classes across the whole Clarence-Moreton preliminary assessment extent (PAE), as created for the Bioregional Assessments program. This landscape classification was developed to characterise the nature of water dependency among the diverse range of assets, based on key landscape properties related to patterns in geology, geomorphology, hydrology and ecology (both natural and modified ecosystems).\n\n\n\nCLM Product 2.3 (Section 2.3.3) provides the methodology used to derive the classification.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nMethodology is provided in Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter, as copied below.\n\n\n\nThere are many different classification and landscape class methodologies which have been developed to provide consistent and functionally relevant representations of ecosystems (e.g. Australian National Aquatic Ecosystem (ANAE) classification framework). Where appropriate, the approach used to derive the 'Land classification for the Clarence-moreton preliinary assessment extent' built on, and integrated these existing classification systems. \n\n\n\nThe process of devising and implementing a landscape classification for the Clarence-Moreton PAE predominately involved combining existing classes within data associated with aquatic and groundwater-dependent ecosystems, vegetation and land use mapping. The landscape classification was derived from data layers consisting of polygons (e.g. vegetation, terrestrial/surface GDEs or wetlands), lines (stream network) and points (springs, economic groundwater assets) and produced an output polygon dataset. \n\n\n\n1. Classification of polygon features:\n\n\n\nThe approach taken was formulated in close collaboration with several experts that had extensive experience with the landscapes of the PAE and had input into developing similar classification systems such as the ANAE classification framework (Aquatic Ecosystems Task Group, 2012). The input datasets and rule sets used for analysis of the polygon layers for this component of the classification are given in Table 1 of Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter.\n\n \n\nGeology is the main landscape-forming driver with four types characterising the bioregion:\n\n\\*\tFractured (volcanic) rock\n\n\\*\tConsolidated sedimentary rock\n\n\\*\tUnconsolidated sedimentary sediments - alluvium\n\n\\*\tUnconsolidated sedimentary sediments - estuarine\n\n\n\nThe fractured rock is represented by the steep escarpment mainly along the Queensland-NSW border within the bioregion. The consolidated sedimentary rock covers the rest of the bioregion except where it is covered by the alluvium associated with hydrological features and floodplains or the estuarine sediments along the coast. The broad geological classification divides the PAE according to Queensland pre-clearing remnant vegetation mapping (9b7bcebf-8b7f-4fb4-bc91-d39f1bd960cb) with the associated landzone classes and NSW Mitchell landscapes (e64597db-453c-46be-a352-360b775d2852). Both datasets were reclassified by a geologist to conform to the four geological types. \n\n\n\n2. Classification of lines (watercourses)\n\n\n\nThe approach to classifying watercourses in the PAE broadly focused on whether or not they were streams or rivers. The watercourses were primarily based on the Bureau of Meteorology's Geofabric cartographic mapping of river channels derived from 1:250,000 topographic maps (ed3acf9b-888c-4d53-b376-ecab89781651). The Geofabric is a purpose-built GIS that maps Australian rivers and streams and identifies how stream features are connected hydrologically. Detailed descriptions of the Geofabric can be found in the Geofabric product guide (Bureau of Meteorology 2012). The water regime of the Geofabric watercourses was defined according to their hierarchy - either 'river' (hierarchy 'major') or 'stream' (hierarchy 'minor'). \n\n\n\nRivers were further classed as 'tidal river' where upstream tidal limits could be determined from published information.\n\n\n\nThe Geofabric watercourse mapping is a line dataset. As part of processing to derive the output landscape classes, all Geofabric watercourses were buffered 0.5m (total 1m both sides of the watercourse). This did not adequately represent the true extent of some watercourses - particularly estuaries and wide rivers. Accordingly, watercourses were broadened to reflect real extent, where NVIS4_1 dataset (57c8ee5c-43e5-4e9c-9e41-fd5012536374>) classes were 'sea and estuaries' and 'inland aquatic - freshwater, salt lakes, lagoons' and where these waterbodies were not already captured in the aquatic classes defined in Table 1 f Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter.\n\n\n\nFreshwater rivers were differentiated from freshwater streams according to the available Geofabric data and in part this served to acknowledge hierarchical differences in geomorphological and ecological processes within main channel depositional zones as opposed to smaller tributary systems. These rivers and streams were further differentiated from estuarine watercourses, to reflect major functional differences in hydrological processes and ecological function (Table 2 of Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter). \n\n\n\n3. Classification of points (springs, waterholes, waterfalls and point-based economic receptors)\n\n\n\nIn the absence of adequate spatial datasets defining location of springs, waterholes and waterfalls, these were classified based on their occurrence in the Assets register (Table 3 of Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter). \n\n\n\n4. Landscape classification\n\n\n\nLandscape classification allows geographical areas to be delineated into classes that are similar in physical and/or biological and hydrological character. Forty-four landscape classes were defined for the Clarence-Moreton PAE (Table 4 of Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter). For the water regime classes (other than 'springs and waterholes; waterfalls'), these landscape classes are a function of the four geological and four terrain 'types' defined in Table 1 of Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter, and resulted in 24 landscape classes. The importance of geology as the main landscape-forming driver is discussed in the geology section (within Product 2.3) and Section 2.3.3.1. Terrain exerts a strong influence on morphology, flow patterns and associated biota. The slope thresholds from the Australian National Aquatic Ecosystems (ANAE) classification framework for the Murray-Darling Basin, based on the Stein Index (Brooks et al., 2014), were used to determine the four terrain types- lowland, low energy upland, high energy upland, and transitional environments. \n\n\n\nHydrological features were classified according to their position in the terrain and whether they were a moving or still body of water as well as their permanency. \n\n\n\nModified landscapes are mostly cleared of natural vegetation and are used for agricultural or other human-intended purposes. These were classified into "dryland agriculture" or "irrigated agriculture" (BRS 2009; DSITIA 2014 ). They were acquired from the latest land use data (BRS 2009; DSITISA 2014). Natural vegetation areas were delineated into major vegetation classes based on structure (especially height and cover), growth form and floristic composition (vascular plant species) in the dominant stratum of each vegetation type (Department of the Environment and Water Resources, 2007). It was also delineated between wet and dry sclerophyll forest. Groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) are vegetation communities that access groundwater on a permanent or intermittent basis (DSITIA 2015). They occur within the main vegetation classes, where groundwater is close to the surface and accessible. Groundwater-dependency was specifically considered through the spatial intersection of GDEs in the Assets register with the vegetation landscape classes, thus resulting in an associated GDE landscape class for each vegetation landscape class.\n\n\n\nDerivation of landscape classes was essentially a process of joining different input datasets to create an output polygon dataset representing all landscape classes. Decisions were made at different points during the process about simplification of data (eg. elimination of small polygons), prioritisation of landscape classes when there was overlap of two or more landscape classes, and improvement of data. How to proceed in these instances was based on an understanding of the quality of the input data (spatial accuracy, spatial resolution, attribute accuracy, currency) combined with an understanding both of the requirements of the output land classification for subsequent receptor analysis and of the CLM PAE landscape. Improvement of data (eg. to code missing areas or re-code existing attributes) relied on the use of supplementary contextual data - maps, satellite imagery, reports or other 'contextual' datasets. Improvement was necessary particularly when defining the polygon water regime classes, where it was found that features and/or attributes within the dataset: 9ff7ab58-2e30-4268-bdf3-bc8aa72aa940 did not adequately cover all relevant aquatic features. \n\n\n\nWhile areal representation across the landscape is 'true' for most landscape classes, the area of landscape classes derived from line and point input datasets (stream, river, tidal river, 'waterfalls', and 'springs and waterholes' landscape classes) does not represent real width of these features in most cases, due to the treatment of these during processing - see section 2.3.3.1 of Product 2.3, Ecosystems chapter, for further details.\n\n## **Dataset Citation** \n\nBioregional Assessment Programme (2015) Land classification for the Clarence-Moreton preliminary assessment extent.     ## **Abstract** \n\n\n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement. \n\n\n\nThis dataset supersedes the previous version (Asset database for the Hunter subregion on 20 July 2015; GUID = 35bc515e-581a-4a7f-ae2a-c0b62b2c9169).\n\n\n\nThe Asset database is registered to the BA repository as an ESRI personal goedatabase (.mdb - doubling as a MS Access database) that can store, query, and manage non-spatial data while the spatial data is in a separate file geodatabase joined by AID/ElementID. \n\n\n\nUnder the BA program, a spatial assets database is developed for each defined bioregional assessment project. The spatial elements that underpin the identification of water dependent assets are identified in the first instance by regional NRM organisations (via the WAIT tool) and supplemented with additional elements from national and state/territory government datasets. A report on the WAIT process for the Hunter is included in the zip file as part of this dataset. \n\n\n\nElements are initially included in the preliminary assets database if they are partly or wholly within the subregion's preliminary assessment extent (Materiality Test 1, M1). Elements are then grouped into assets which are evaluated by project teams to determine whether they meet the second Materiality Test (M2). Assets meeting both Materiality Tests comprise the water dependent asset list. Descriptions of the assets identified in the Hunter subregion are found in the "AssetList" table of the database. \n\n\n\nAssets are the spatial features used by project teams to model scenarios under the BA program. Detailed attribution does not exist at the asset level.     ## **Abstract** \n\nThis dataset was derived from data provided by the NSW Office of Water. You can find a link to the source dataset in the Lineage Field in this metadata statement. The History Field in this metadata statement describes how this dataset was derived.\n\nThe difference between NSW Office of Water GW licences - GLO v3 and v4 is that an unique ID has been added to the dataset. This is so it can be ingested into the asset database.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe aim of this dataset was to be able to map each groundwater works with the volumetric entitlement without double counting the volume and to aggregate/ disaggregate the data depending on the final use.\n\n\n\nThis has not been clipped to the Gloucester PAE, therefore the number of economic assets/ relevant licences will drastically reduce once this occurs.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nThe difference between NSW Office of Water GW licences - GLO v3 and v4 is that an unique ID has been added to the dataset.     ## **Abstract** \n\nThis dataset was supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and is presented here as originally supplied. The metadata was not provided by the data supplier and has been compiled by the programme based on known details.\n\n\n\nOriginally digitised very poorly, this dataset has been fixed as much as posssible. Important feeding habitats and roosting sites for seven species of migratory shorebirds (waders) were plotted on GIS software using air photos as templates. Data for this process was obtained from a variety of sources to provide numbers of birds recorded at each of the sites. The habitat mapping was done from first hand experience in the field by the author and/or from local ornithologists with particular skills in shorebird identification and local knowledge of habitats used by shorebirds. The accuracy of the data plotted will not always match the topography, such as shoals, sand spits or shorelines because these are constantly changing (the air photos used are at least 10 years old).However this is the most precise shorebird mapping available.\n\n\n\nImportant feeding habitats and roosting sites for seven species of migratory shorebirds (waders) were plotted on GIS software using air photos as templates. Data for this process was obtained from a variety of sources to provide numbers of birds recorded at each of the sites. The accuracy of the data plotted will not always match the topography, such as shoals, sand spits or shorelines because these are constantly changing (the air photos used are at least 10 years old). However this is the most precise shorebird mapping available. The coastline template provided by DEC was not of sufficient accuracy for the purpose of this project and has not been used in any of the maps other than to illustrate the whole of coast maps.\n\n\n\nData were sorted and any obvious errors removed before being used. Only data since 1990 has been used for the purpose of this report due to changes in habitats and population estimates over time. Habitat and species management can only be carried out using the most up to date data and habitat mapping. However as there are no regular population estimates for all coastal estuaries and some data over a 15 year period was used to provide a pattern of habitat usage by threatened migratory shorebirds for the whole coast. There has been no attempt to assess wetlands habitats away from the coast or estuarine habitats due to lack of data for inland sites. However the species concerned are largely coastal during their non-breeding seasons, when the birds are in Australia.\n\n\n\nThis project was commissioned by the Department of Environment and Conservation to identify and map all known shorebird feeding habitat and roost sites along coastal NSW, specifically that of the Sanderling Calidris alba, Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris, Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii, Lesser Sand Plover Charadrius mongolus, Broad-billed Sandpiper Limicola falcinellus, Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa and Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus. The results of the project was a series of shape files and data files using Arcview 9.1 and Microsoft Excel-,compatible with those of the DEC Spatial Analysis & Information Section, to map GIS layers for:\n\n\n\nthe known feeding habitat of Sanderling, Great Knot, Greater Sand Plover, Lesser Sand Plover,\n\nBroad-billed Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit and Terek Sandpiper along the NSW coast;\n\nthe boundaries of key foraging sites of the above species along the NSW coast; and\n\nthe boundaries of roosting sites of the above species along the NSW coast.\n\n\n\nThis dataset has been provided to the BA Programme for use within the programme only. Third parties should contact the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage.\n\n## **Purpose** \n\nThe degree of accuracy of mapping is governed to a large extent on the maps and air photos that are used as a template. Although topographic maps are drawn from air photos the information on the map is what is interpreted by the person responsible for interpreting and plotting the information onto a map. The majority of shorebird habitat is subtidal and as a consequence of this is rarely mapped, unless it happens to be part of a major sand bar. Coastlines are largely delineated by the high tide mark. This in itself is variable depending on whether the tide is high at the time the photograph was taken and whether the tides are spring tides or neap tides at the time. Furthermore the accuracy of the coastline drawn depends on the dedication of the cartographer and at which scale the map is drawn. The coastline provided be DEC for this project is of little use fro drawing shape files to the degree of accuracy that would be required by local government and for drawing b\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nMethods:\n\n\n\nAll existing data on shorebird distribution (foraging and roosting records) held by bird groups, specialists and DEC Wildlife Atlas were reviewed and updated where information was available and checked for inaccuracies. , Data was also updated where required as a result of changes to estuarine habitats through the use of aerial photography.     ## **Abstract** \n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme. This dataset was derived from the Gloucester geological model. You can find a link to the parent dataset in the Lineage Field in this metadata statement. The History Field in this metadata statement describes how this dataset was derived.\n\n\n\nThe data set contains the image in JPG format exported from the RMS Model for the Gloucester Basin.The image shows the surface topography in 3D with well locations and the Basin boundary.\n\n## **Purpose** \n\nUsed to visualize the topographic surface used in the Gloucester geologic model.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nThe data set contains an image exported from the RMS model which uses the formatted three dimensional grid values built in the model. The model was built using data extracted from well completions reports published by mining companies and consultants which record the depth of various formations encountered during drilling works.     ## **Abstract** \n\n\n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement. \n\n\n\nThis database is an update (v2) of the initial asset database for the Gwydir subregion (titled "Asset database for the Gwydir subregion on 8 May 2015", ID 429a2721-6fc1-4f3b-96d1-3eaeaa98a993).\n\n\n\nThis dataset contains a combination of spatial and non-spatial (attribute) components of the Gwydir subregion Asset List - an mdb file (readable as an MS Access database or as an ESRI personal geodatabase) holds the non-spatial tabular attribute data, and an ESRI file geodatabase contains the spatial data layers, which are attributed only with unique identifiers ("AID" for assets, and "ElementID" for elements). The dataset also contains a draft "Water-dependent asset register and asset list" spreadsheet (BA-NIC-GWY-130-WaterDependentAssetRegister-AssetList-V20150824.xlsx).\n\n\n\nThe tabular attribute data can be joined in a GIS to the "Assetlist" table in the mdb database using the "AID" field to view asset attributes (BA attribution). To view the more detailed attribution at the element-level, the intermediate table "Element_to_asset" can be joined to the assets spatial datasets using AID, and then joining the individual attribute tables from the Access database using the common "ElementID" fields. Alternatively, the spatial feature layers representing elements can be linked directly to the individual attribute tables in the Access database using "ElementID", but this arrangement will not provide the asset-level groupings.\n\n\n\nFurther information is provided in the accompanying document, "GWY_asset_database_doc20150824.doc" located within this dataset.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nVersionID\tDate Notes\n\n1.0\t 8/05/2015\tInitial database\n\n2.0\t 24/08/2015 v2 - additions as follows:\n\n\n\n(1) At the request of NSW OEH, data identifying species and ecological communities listed under NSW legislation has been included in two additional attribute tables "NSW_TS" and "NSW_TEC" (a total of 110 elements and assets, AIDs 70150-70259). However, given the extremely course catchment-scale resolution of the data as compared to the relatively fine-scale of the PAE, it is essentially a non-spatial list of species and communities which may or may not occur within the PAE. As the data was unable to be meaningfully used as a spatial dataset it was subsequently "turned off" at decision M0 (not fit for purpose), with the decision reflected in the "Assetlist"and "AssetDecisions" tables.     ## **Abstract** \n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.\n\n\n\nThis dataset contains polygon and line shapefiles representing the Gloucester terrestrial (both a multipart and singlepart version) and riverine Landscape Classes respectively. It also contains KMZ exports of these features.\n\n\n\nNote: This differs from previous versions in that the extent was extended to the Gloucester AE boundary (previously the extent was to the PAE) so the discontinuous river lines that weaved in and out of the PAE boundary could be wholly included.\n\n\n\nThe polygon landscape Classes are as follows.\n\n\n\nTerrestrial (polygons)\n\nForrested Wetlands\n\nFreshwater Wetlands\n\nRainforests\n\nDry sclerophyll forests\n\nWet sclerophyll forests\n\nSaline wetlands\n\n(Non-GDE) Native vegetation\n\nPlantation or production forestry\n\nDryland agriculture\n\nIrrigated agriculture\n\nIntensive uses (includes mining)\n\n\n\nNote forestry that selectively logs native forests is included in the "(Non-GDE) Native vegetation" class rather than the economic "Plantation and production foresstry" class.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nThe terrestrial Landscape class polygons are sourced directly from the two input polygon source datasets and clipped to the Gloucester PAE.\n\n\n\nGDE landscape classes derive directly from the source NSW OoW GDE layer's Keith Form attribute, though the "Riverine Forests" Keith form are combined with the "Forested Wetlands" LC and the "Mangrove Swamps" and "Saltmarshes" Keith Forms are combined to form the "Saline Wetlands" LC . \n\n\n\nThe remaining non-GDE terrestrial LC polygons are mainly sourced from the ACLUM catchment landuse from the PRIMARY V7 classification, and retain the source class names except that "1 Conservation and natural environments" is rename the "non-GDE Native Vegtation" LC. A further exception is the "Plantation and Production Forestry" LC. This is derived from the SECONDARY_V7 classification where:\n\n\n\n"SecondV7" = '2.2 Production forestry' OR "SecondV7" = '3.1 Plantation forestry' OR "SecondV7" = '4.1 Irrigated plantation forestry'\n\n\n\nThe Riverine LC lines are derived directly from the Rivertypes source dataset\n\n\n\nNote for the 2016 March 9 IESC Deep Dive for GLO was necessary to tease out the Keith Forms of the "non-GDE native vegetaton" Landscape class in order to generate areal statistics for endangered species habitats. These were sourced from the Greater Hunter vegetation mapping.
