The researchers may be accompanied by the professor, Dr. Kate Kemplin.An Integrative Review on the Effect of School- Based Nutrition Programs on Obesity Rates in Indigenous Youth Background Obesity-related diseases are disproportionately pervasive within Indigenous communities in Canada (King et al., 2009). Obesity is linked to various chronic illnesses which lead to decreases in quality of life, loss of ability to work, increased morbidity and mortality, and a significant burden and financial strain on the healthcare system (MacEwan et al. 2011). Individuals under 15 years of age account for a greater proportion of the population within Indigenous communities; therefore, children are especially demographically significant in this context. School-based nutritional programs show promise in affecting positive change related to healthy eating behaviours amongst Indigenous children. However, there are no well-established guidelines or protocols related to these interventions, hence, the aim of this integrative review is to identify the most effective strategies in reducing obesity rates amongst Indigenous youth in Canada. Methods To date, this integrative review has consisted of searches in three peer-reviewed databases and a general web search for grey literature. Eligibility criteria were applied by three reviewers, and data were extracted and charted by six reviewers using components of culturally relevant education, increasing access to nutritious food choices, Indigenous ownership, and implementing physical activity programs. Results The literature review is ongoing. Preliminary results indicate school-based nutrition programs improve healthy eating knowledge and behaviours when paired with supplemental education regarding nutritional choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing sedentary behaviours (Valery et al., 2021). Combining immediate and long-term initiatives to combat the obesity crisis is important to decrease health disparities amongst Canadian Indigenous youth. Conclusion Through this integrative review, we hope to identify components of the most successful nutritional interventions within Indigenous communities in Canada. This will help guide the planning, development, and implementation of future nutrition programs
Helping talent scouts to overcome the RAE
No full textDavid Mann is an Assistant Professor in Human Movement Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He has undergraduate degrees in Optometry, and Human Movement Sciences, and completed his PhD while working in Skill Acquisition at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, Australia. David teaches in Talent Identification and Development, and works in this area with industry partners including the International Paralympic Committee, Netherlands Olympic Committee, Netherlands Police, and Ajax plus Feyenoord Football Clubs. His recent work has examined the information used by talent scouts when making judgements of talent, and seeks to help scouts to overcome biases such as the RAE.In this talk, David Mann will discuss recent studies that examine how talent scouts make selections in sport, and potential solutions to help scouts to account for the RAE. David will first present recent work which shows the degree to which relative age and maturation influence the selections of scouts when making judgements of talent. He will then discuss recent studies which have looked to alter the judgements made by talent scouts by presenting information about the relative age and maturation of young athletes. The results show that it is not enough for scouts to simply be aware of the RAE and have access to the relative age or maturation of young athletes, but rather that more pervasive interventions such as age-ordered shirt numbering are required to alter the selections of scouts
Oil prices and Economic Growth: Cases of Canada and USA
Get PDFThe effects of oil prices on economies has been subjected to a lot of scrutiny since the 1960’s. This study conducts an analysis of the impact of oil price shocks on two oil exporting nations, Canada and USA. The transmission mechanisms of oil price changes to any economy vary from the supply effect to the demand effect. High crude oil prices impact the Canadian economy and USA through a variety of channels, in both positive and negative ways. Ceteris paribus more revenue is made when oil prices increase. In this study, I run an ordinary least square estimation with time series data from 1960-2017. The analysis showed a 0.20% increase economic growth in Canada and a 0.18% increase in USA when there is percentage increase in oil prices. A Systematic Review of Commercially Available Sports Bras with Integrated Heart Rate Monitors

Current literature demonstrates usage of heart rate monitors as reliable personal monitoring devices, capable of examining cardiovascular function during rest and exercise. For women engaging in exercise, undergarments can interfere with the positioning of heart rate monitors, resulting in inaccurate readings. Thus, new sports bras with built in heart rate monitors have been designed to provide both comfort and precise vital measurements. There are currently three commercially available smart bras, two of which have demonstrated validity during rest or light exercise, yet the perceived comfort from the participants was poor (Navalta et al., 2020). Methods: To evaluate the validity and limitations of commercially available smart bra studies, a systematic review of all articles analyzing smart bra use during exercise will be performed using the software Zotero. Beginning with a search using the following keywords: heart rate, sports bra, monitor, and cardiovascular health, this review will support the development of an in-house smart bra that provides support and precise measurements during exercise. Expected results: It is expected that there is currently no comfortable sports bra with a removable heart rate strap that can monitor heart rate accurately during various levels of exercise intensity. Exploring the Role of SPY1 and Musashi-1 in Glioblastoma Stem Cell Maintenance and Therapy Resistance
No full textGlioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive type of brain, and due to its highly infiltrative and heterogeneous nature, GBM poses significant challenges to standard therapies. Glioblastoma is categorized by three genomic subtypes: Proneural, Classical and Mesenchymal, and contains therapy-resistant Glioma Stem Cells (GSCs), contributing to tumor heterogeneity. Cancer cells (including GBM) are characterized by uncontrolled cell proliferation, which is linked to cell cycle dysregulation. The cell cycle, regulated by cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), and CDK inhibitors, ensures orderly progression in a normal cell. Spy1 (SPDYA/RingoA) is an atypical cell cycle regulator that controls cell proliferation and survival through unique activation of CDKs and promoting the G1/S phase transition. In GBM, elevated levels of Spy1 regulate CDK2 activity and drive clonal expansion of CD133+ GSCs. Spy1-CDK2 can also activate RNA-binding protein, Musashi-1 (Msi1), which plays a critical role in GSC maintenance through post-transcriptional regulation of NUMB and Notch pathway. Musashi-1 supports GSC populations to drive tumor initiation and resistance to differentiation. This study aims to understand the role of Msi1 in maintaining GSC properties and its potential correlation with specific subgroups, and how Msi1 influences GSC self-renewal, proliferation, and response to therapies, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic strategies to overcome treatment resistance in GBM. The objective is to study the expression of Msi1 in different genetic subtypes of GBM as well as in selected GSC populations and to establish whether Spy1 mediated effects in GBM depend on Msi1 molecular function
Accusatory Based Discourse Strategies: Apologia, Kategoria and Strategic Image Repair Discourse
No full textThe purpose of this paper is to suggest that an orator can strategically pick discourse strategies when issuing their apologia if they understand the attitudes they are combatting in the subsequent kategoria. This paper draws heavily on works by William Benoit and Halford Ryan. Using a general understanding of apologia, and the concept of kategoria as conceptualized by Ryan, I suggest that once an orator understands apologia and kategoria as a speech set, they can use Benoit’s image repair tactics as an effective way to repair their image to their respective audience. The combination of an orator’s understanding of apologia, kategoria, and image repair theory are like a warrior’s sword and shield. It enables an orator to deflect what ought to be deflected and attack what ought to be attacked when the goal is to repair one's image. This I go on to term accusatory-based discourse strategies. To put it in other words, accusatory-based discourse strategies simply means to choose the rhetorical strategies an orator will use in their apologia depending on the component of the negative attitude, held by the audience, one wishes to combat. By understanding the negative attitudes that compose the kategoria, an orator can better tailor their apologia to effectively repair their image
The Poverty of Morals: An Introduction
Get PDFThis investigation engages with Bernard Williams’ critique of traditional moral theories, particularly focusing on their inability to address the complexities of real-life moral situations. Williams, in Morality: An Introduction to Ethics and Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy, argues that certain ethical systems are impersonal, neglecting the nuanced and unpredictable nature of human experience. These theories, he contends, fail to account for the importance of emotions, personal relationships, and the particularities of individual circumstances, thereby undermining personal integrity and commitment. My work extends Williams’ critique by examining the roles of the Moralist, Relativist, Subjectivist, Immoralist, and Amoralist. I argue that Subjectivists and Relativists, though often considered alternative moral agents, fall outside of the moral realm, akin to the Amoralist. This leads to the proposal that morality and ethics must be conceptually separated: morality as an objective good, and ethics as the subjective actions and decisions an agent makes. This separation allows ethical theories to better address the emotional and interpersonal complexities of real life whilst maintaining a foundation for objective moral reasoning. I introduce the concept of moral poverty, which refers to the diminished understanding of morality that arises when individuals operate outside the moral realm, as seen in the Subjectivist and Relativist perspectives. I illustrate how actions justified by subjective or relativistic views often lack genuine moral grounding, and are instead fostered by moral ignorance, leading to ethical justifications that are more about permissibility than true moral value. Ultimately, I argue for a reorientation of moral theory that clearly delineates between the moral and the ethical, allowing for a more applicable understanding of morality that can guide real-world actions without losing sight of the complexities inherent in human life
Getting Deep into Skates: Biology of the Arctic Skate (Amblyraja hyperborea) in the Eastern Canadian Arctic
No full textSustainable IndustryThe Arctic skate (Amblyraja hyperborea) is a deep-water species that is part of the order Rajiformes, has been identified as one of the most common bycatch species (one that is unintentionally caught) in commercial Arctic fisheries. Global skate populations have declined by 90% since 1970, raising concern of over exploitation of A. hyperborea in expanding northern fisheries. To better understand the ecological role of this species, this project examined their diet, niche, trophic level, movement, and biological metrics. This is accomplished through stomach content analysis, stable isotope (¹³C Carbon 13 and ¹⁵N Nitrogen 15 of liver and muscle) analysis, and biometric profiles of Arctic skates sampled across 6 study sites in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. From previous data, it is expected that Arctic skate has a mainly fish-based diet and falls within the estimated trophic levels for all Rajiformes. We predict that biometric profiles of gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, and nitrogen ratios will increase with increasing body size, while carbon ratios are predicted to show variation among study sites. This study is of importance due to the continued growth of demersal fisheries that may lead to an increase in Arctic skate bycatch. Through comparison with previous data, this study will allow a revaluation of the status of this species and bycatch management in Arctic fisheries
