    Optimizing the Optoelectronic Properties of Conjugated Polymers Through Metal-Ligand Coordination

    Anita Hu will be presenting.From the phones at our fingertips to the solar panels on our roofs, humans are becoming increasingly dependent on electronics for information, entertainment, and to power their daily lives. Further advancements are paving the way for a new age of high-performance, flexible devices. Organic electronics made from conjugated semiconducting polymers are showing great potential as a softer and more processable material than brittle silicon used in today's devices, while exhibiting comparable charge transport to silicon. However, one key challenge with these organic polymers is the difficulty to control their optical properties and charge transport in devices. Electronics must interact with and alter their lighting while efficiently conducting electricity. Therefore, the desired material must be tuneable to precisely control these important properties. In this research, a novel organic diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymer is presented as a leading candidate for optoelectronics. This polymer uses noncovalent metal-ligand interactions, enabled by using specific terpyridine ligands, to fine-tune its ability to emit light and transport electrons. Various transition metal ions, including Fe2+, Co2+, Zn2+, and Mn2+, were introduced into the polymer to determine which species would coordinate most efficiently with the ligand, altering its optical nature. Results from fluorescence and absorption spectroscopies showed that the manganese ion coordinated the weakest to the ligand, while iron and cobalt ions bound the most efficiently and optimally altered emission intensity. Thus, iron and cobalt were identified as great candidates for metal-ligand coordination within the polymer for optimal optoelectronic capabilities. These findings contribute to the continued pursuit of creating efficient organic optoelectronics through the promising technique of metal-ligand interactions.     Examining the Influence of Adduction and Abduction Strentgh in Ice Hockey Varsity Atheletes and 35m On-Ice Sprint Times

    Purpose: This study evaluated the change in varsity male and female hockey player’s isometric adduction and abduction strength along with their 35m on-ice sprint performance between mid-season and post season. Methods: Forty-four participants aged 18 to 25 years (average 21.26 ± 2.20), completed the groin strength and on-ice sprints at two distinct time during the season (Mid-season and Post-season). The strength test comprised of isometric adductor and abductor maximum voluntary efforts (MVE), as well as on-ice 35m sprints which were recorded using the Brower Timing Gate (TCi Brower Timing Systems, LLC, Draper, UT). An independent mixed-design repeated measures ANOVA with Tukey’s post-hoc test was used to determine any significant interactions (p <0.05) between MVE and time to complete the 35m sprint. Results: Male participants produced a greater MVE compared to female, with abduction efforts being greater than adduction across all participants. Skating speed indicated a decrease in time over the course of the season while strength increased. Conclusion: The present study identified significant differences by sex in force output and speed time during the 35m on ice sprint. The values collected provide insight into varsity ice hockey player abduction and adduction maximum voluntary effort using a force frame

    Direct current coil designs for a portable magnetic resonance scanner

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful non-invasive imaging technique with high resolution and excellent soft tissue contrast. However, access to MRI is limited by the high instrument cost and high maintenance cost. Current scanners cannot be easily relocated because of their size and weight. A low cost, portable scanner will enable point-of-care diagnosis as well as other industrial applications such as agriculture disease screening. In MRI experiments, a highly homogenous static magnetic field is required to ensure image quality, which is usually achieved by the direct current (DC) shimming coils. Magnetic field gradients are generated by DC gradient coils for spatial encoding. The portable magnetic resonance scanner requires novel DC coils due to the unconventional single-sided configuration. The magnetic field distribution, heat dissipation and volume constraint must be considered in the design. Recent development on shimming and gradient coils for a portable magnetic resonance scanner and future applications will be presented

    Psychosocial Factors and Outcomes in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes: A Baseline Analysis from the Diabetes Journey Project

    Children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) often face physical and emotional challenges due to the daily demands of managing this chronic condition. These challenges can impact outcomes such as quality of life (QOL), barriers to diabetes adherence (BDA), and blood glucose levels (measured by HbA1c). This proposal focuses on understanding how different psychosocial factors (depression, diabetes distress, fear of hypoglycemia, family conflict, sleep patterns, COVID-19 stressors, and problems with executive functioning) affect the outcome variables. Baseline data from the Diabetes Journey Project will be analyzed to find relationships between these variables through bivariate correlations and regression analyses. The findings from this study aim to inform interventions that address psychosocial challenges, ultimately improving diabetes management and quality of life for children and adolescents with T1D

    HOW TO INCREASE MIGRANT RESILIENCE IN CANADA: WHAT THE LEGAL SYSTEM CAN DO TO HELP

    Immigration is important to Canada. Migrants replenish our declining population, help drive our economy, and contribute to our labour market. By 2036, almost half of the Canadian population will be either first-generation or second-generation immigrants. While the migrant experience varies, it is recognized to be deeply challenging. Among these barriers is often the need to engage with the complex legal system during and after the settlement process. This paper uses the literature to better understand the benefits of migrants in Canada, concept of resilience, benefits of diversity in the workplace, and how law firms can leverage diversity to perform better. This paper demonstrates how law firms can benefit simultaneously while they help migrants foster higher levels of resilience by increasing their access to legal services. Research is used to provide both practical steps to take when incorporating diversity and metrics to consider when assessing the effectiveness of these efforts. Current news regarding corporate decisions are used to demonstrate the directions corporations and society are taking regarding their views on diversity. Recommendations are made to both the government and legal field to help address issues regarding access to legal services

    Social Networking Sites (SNS) are rapidly taking over people’s personal as well as professional lives, globally. It has not only changed the way masses communicate and express but is also transforming the way learning is looked at. Though considered as inherently personal spaces, these sites are now proving to be professional spaces to learn; used by millions of consumers and validated by field experts and mentors. Although there is some amount of research done on the effects social network platforms have on school education, the way it is moulding adult education is yet to be fully investigated. Adult education is essentially unlike school education as it usually has a specific goal, either personal or career oriented. Since SNS are affecting all these aspects of life and the world is starting to accept them as not only socialising tools but as executive tools, it is time for these sites to be a part of adult education too

    The Impact of Cyclin B1 on Tuberin Stabilization

    Aiden Mitrevski - Presenter.Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by various mutations in either TSC1 or TSC2, genes that encode the proteins Hamartin and Tuberin respectively. Hamartomas (benign tumours), skin lesions, neurological symptoms, renal dysfunctions, and retinal malformations are often present in TSC patients with varying severity. Tuberin and Hamartin regulate protein synthesis through mTORC1 inhibition. Tuberin can also delay mitotic onset at the G2/M cell cycle transition by binding to Cyclin B1. Hamartin has been shown to stabilize Tuberin by inhibiting its ubiquitination by HERC1 and subsequent degradation. Preliminary data from our lab suggests that Cyclin B1 may also contribute to the stabilization of Tuberin levels during the G2/M transition. Phosphorylation status of the cytoplasmic retention sequence (CRS) of Cyclin B1 plays an important role in the formation of the Tuberin/Cyclin B1 complex. The unphosphorylated CRS form of Cyclin B1 (Cyclin B1 5xA) binds stronger to Tuberin compared to the phosphorylated form (Cyclin B1 5xE). My thesis investigates the role of Cyclin B1 in Tuberin stabilization and how CRS phosphorylation status impacts Tuberin/Cyclin B1 complex formation. HEK293-TSC1 null cells (IC2) will be transfected with varying concentrations of Cyclin 5xA DNA and the levels of the Tuberin protein will be quantified by Western blot techniques. The importance of each residue in the CRS region for the Tuberin/Cyclin B1 complex formation will also be evaluated using Immunoprecipitation studies. Understanding the role of Cyclin B1 in Tuberin stabilization will shed light on cell proliferation and growth mechanisms that underlie tumorigenic disorders

    Does Mitigation Achieve Conservation? Evaluating the effectiveness of freshwater mussel species-at-risk translocations in southwestern Ontario

    ['UNSDG 14: Life Below Water (https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal14)']Viable, Healthy and Safe CommunitiesFreshwater mussels (Unionidae) serve as critical structural and functional links for aquatic food webs and are effective bioindicators, but large numbers of species are declining globally, with many in Canada federally listed as species-at-risk of extinction (SAR). Restricted in dispersal ability due to their sessile nature, Unionidae are incredibly vulnerable to human activities such as river infrastructure projects like bridge construction, culvert replacements, and earth moving activities adjacent to waterbodies. Therefore, translocation efforts involving freshwater mussel populations are commonly conducted as a mitigation response under the federal Fisheries and Species at Risk Act which protects freshwater mussels. Since publication of the Mackie protocol in 2008, practitioners have been required to follow standard practices to ensure translocation success, however little to no follow-up has been done to evaluate the effectiveness of this practice. To begin to assess translocation success, we have received privileged access to several translocation reports spanning 15 years from which we have conducted a data synthesis. In addition, multiple sites of previous translocations in the Grand and Thames River watersheds located in southern Ontario were surveyed during the 2022 field season. Findings indicate that mussel communities do not fully recover following translocation, negatively affecting the population density and biodiversity of communities instead of conserving and protecting them. Moreover, it appears that critical habitats do not fully recover, even 15 years post impact. We offer data and insights to inform changes to the practice of translocation to hopefully improve conservation of the species-at-risk and restoration of their critical habitats
