    Short term protective effect of digitoxin in sepsis-induced acute lung injury

    Digitoxin is a cardiac glycoside used in the treatment of heart failure. Inspired by its known antiinflammatory effect, this study aims to investigate the effect of digoxin in a sepsis model and to bring to light its effect and underlying mechanism in acute lung injury (ALI). Method: 28 wistar albino rats were divided into 4 groups. Sepsis model is performed by the feces intraperitoneal-injection procedure (FIP). Results: TNF-a, CRP, IL-6, IL 1-Beta, lactic acid, and MDA values were significantly decreased in the FIP+digitoxin group compared to the FIP+Saline group. When the same groups were examined, histological improvements such as decrease in alveolar inflammation and decrease in septal thickening in the digitoxin group and thorax CT were found to be significantly higher in the Hounsfield unit digitoxin group compared to the Saline group. Conclusion: Digitoxin has shown biochemical improvement in sepsis with all known mechanisms of action, and healing effects in both computerized tomography and histology in the lung

    The Relationship Between Reaction Time And Gaming Time in E-Sports Players

    E-sports can be defined as an electronic sports form and is growing at a rapid pace worldwide. E-sport requires high-speed reactions during all games. The purpose of this study was to evaluate auditory, visual and aim reaction times of different duration of game playing in e-sport players. Fifty-three participants were assigned into two groups according to their playing time which was either more or less than 14 hours per week. The participants were tested for auditory reaction time with online website at playback.fm, visual and aim reaction time on website of humanbenchmark.com. There were statistically significant differences in visual (p<.001) and aim (p<.001) reaction time between the groups, whereas in auditory reaction time no significant difference was found (p=.397). The visual and aim reaction times were better in the gamers who play e-sport more than 14 hours a week. Our study showed that visual and aim reaction time was more affected from game playing time than auditory reaction time in e-sport gamers. Playing e-sport may have positive effects on visual and aim reaction time in young population

    Relationship between serum sialic acid levels and prolidase activity with airflow obstruction in patients with COPD

    Our aim in this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of sialic acid (SA) and prolidase activity and to evaluate the association between airflow obstruction severity and these parameters in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Ninety-four patients (84 M, 10 F) and 34 healthy subjects (19 M, 15 F) were included into the study. COPD staging was performed to COPD patients according to new global initiative for chronic obstructive lung disease criteria which includes pulmonary function tests, symptoms and hospitalization; COPD patients were divided into 4 subgroups as group A (n=25), group B (n=19), group C (n=20), and group D (n=28). SA and C-reactive protein levels were significantly higher than the control group in all COPD groups. SA levels were significantly higher in group B patients than the control and group A. Prolidase activity was significantly lower than control group in total COPD groups (P<.05). There was a weak negative correlation between SA and forced vital capacity (r=–0.217, P=.038) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) (r=–0.210, P=.045), whereas weak positive correlation was present between SA and Creactive protein (r=0.247, P=.018) in all patient groups. There was weak positive correlation between prolidase and FEV1 (r=0.222, P=.033) and FEV1/forced vital capacity (r=0.230, P=.027). Our study shows that systemic inflammation, prolidase activity, and SA levels in stable COPD patients are associated with airflow obstruction severity. In addition to the prolidase activity; SA levels might be associated with inflammation.     The Predictive Role of Nephrometry Scores in Evaluating The Effect of Partial Nephrectomy on Postoperative Kidney Functions in T1 Renal Cell Tumors

    Objective: We aimed at demonstrating the predictive role of different nephrometry scores in evaluating the effect of partial nephrectomy on postoperative kidney functions in patients with T1 kidney tumors. Materials and Methods: We included 44 patients with clinical stage T1 renal tumors who underwent laparoscopic partial nephrectomy between June 2018 and January 2020. Then, we performed abdominal cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. We recorded the warm ischemia time, operation time, and amount of intraoperative bleeding. The resulting changes were evaluated by determining preoperative, and third month postoperative creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR). RENAL nephrometry, Preoperative Aspects and Dimensions Used for an Anatomic (PADUA) classificationand Diameter- Axial- Polar (DAP) scores were calculated for each patient. The relationship between a decline in renal function, duration of ischemia and RENAL/PADUA/DAP scores was equally explored to achieve the aim of the study. Results: The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 55.07±12.92 years, and the preoperative creatinine and eGFR values were 0.87 mg/dL and 93.17 mL/min, respectively. The third month postoperative creatinine and eGFRvalues were determined at 0.96 mg/dL and 86.52 mL/min, respectively. The mean RENAL (6.2±1.4), PADUA (6.8±1.0), and DAP (5.57±1.5) scores were also determined. Changes in creatinine and eGFR levels correlated significantly with RENAL/PADUA/ DAP scores and the ischemia time (p0.05). Conclusion: Changes in kidney functions and ischemia time correlates significantly withRENAL/PADUA/DAP nephrometry scores

    Online education experiences of the students studying in health care departments during the covid-19 pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted face to face education and lead the transition to online education in Turkey, as it happened all around the world. The aim of this study is to describe the feelings, opinions, and experiences of the students of health departments about online education. In this qualitative study, interviews were conducted with 40 students in Turkey. The content analysis revealed five themes: (1) ambivalent feelings, (2) feelings of advantages and disadvantages, (3) differences of online education from face to face education, (4) problems experienced, and (5) recommendations. The students of health departments had various feelings such as happiness and worry in the first days of online education. Throughout the online education, students also could not benefit from applied courses. Moreover, the students experienced problems stemming from themselves, the system, and, even if a little, from the teaching staff

    Femoroasetabular impingement sendromu (FAİS) kalça ekleminin iki bileşeni olan asetabulum ve femur proksimali arasındaki mekanik uyumsuzluk nedeniyle kalça ağrısı öncülü bir patolojidir. Özellikle genç erişkinlerde ve aktif kişilerde görülmektedir. Erken dönemde tanı konulmasıyla tedavi edildiğinde osteoartritin gidişi büyük ölçüde engellenebilmektedir. Femoroasetabular impingement sendromunun cam (femur tipi), pincer (kıskaç tip) ve her iki patolojinin bir arada görüldüğü durum olan miks tip olmak üzere 3 tipi vardır. Klinik hikaye, semptomlar, testler ve radyolojik görüntüleme ile beraber tanı konulmaktadır. Tanı sonrası dönemde; ağrı kontrolü, fizyoterapi ve rehabilitasyon uygulamaları, aktivite modifikasyonu, eklem içi enjeksiyon uygulamaları ve non-steroid antiinflamatuar ilaç kullanımı konservatif tedavi seçeneklerini oluşturmaktadır. Tedavi protokolünde konservatif tedavi yaklaşımlarının yetersiz kaldığı durumlarda cerrahi yöntemler önerilmektedir. İmpingement tipine göre çeşitli cerrahi seçenekler bulunmaktadır. Bu derleme makalede, femoroasetabular impingement sendromunda fizyoterapinin hastalar üzerindeki etkinliğinin değerlendirilmesi ve hastalar üzerinde çeşitli parametrelerdeki değişiklikler incelenmektedirFemoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a pathology that is an antecedent of hip pain, due to the mechanical mismatch between the acetabulum and proximal femur which are two components of the hip joint. It especially appears in young adults and active people. With the help of early diagnosis, progression of the osteoarthritis could be stopped largely. Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome has 3 types: cam, pincer, and mix which consists of both pathologies together. Clinical history, symptoms, tests, and radiological imaging are necessary to get a diagnosis. For the period after diagnosis, pain management, physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices, activity modification, intraarticular injection, and the usage of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are conservative treatment options. According to the treatment protocol, in case conservative treatment approaches are insufficient surgical methods are recommended. There are different surgical methods depending on the type of impingement. The aim of this review article is to evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy on patients who suffer from femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and to analyze the changes in various parameters over the patients

    Cardiovascular drugs and analysis of potential risk factors associated with mortality in severe coronavirus disease 2019 patients

    OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular diseases are also considered to increase the risk of death in COVID-19 patients. However, real-world data concerning the risk factors for death in patients with severe COVID-19 still remain vague. This study aimed to identify the potential risk factors associated with mortality in severe COVID-19 patients. METHODS: All consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of our institute for COVID-19 for severe COVID-19 pneumonia from April 1, 2020 to July 20, 2020 were included in the analysis. Patient characteristics, including complete medical history and comorbid diseases, blood test results during admission and on day 7, and clinical characteristics were compared between survivors and nonsurvivors. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between survivors and nonsurvivors regarding age, gender, and preexisting cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, the rate of the medications including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blockers did not differ between survivors and nonsurvivors. The peak C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin, fibrinogen, and d-dimer levels and the rate for chronic renal failure were significantly higher in nonsurvivors compared with survivors. Intubated patients had a higher risk of death than the others had. CONCLUSIONS: This study failed to demonstrate a significant difference in preexisting cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular medications between survivors and nonsurvivors who were admitted to ICU for severe COVID-19. Our findings indicate that the presence of chronic renal failure, a high peak ferritin concentration, and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation appear predictive for mortality. We propose that these risk factors should be taken into account in defining the risk status of severe COVID-19 patients admitted to the IC

    Abstract: BACKGROUND: To date, only one study assessed the spinal mobility and muscle strength of patients who were treated either with fusion or brace treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the range of motion (ROM) and strength of the cervical and thoracic/lumbar spine in patients who underwent spinal fusion for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in comparison to healthy individuals. METHODS: Patients (n= 28) who were treated surgically for AIS were included in the study. An age and gender matched control group (n= 22) was included that consisted of healthy individuals. DAVID® Lumbar/Thoracic Extension, Lumbar/Thoracic Rotation, and Cervical Extension/Lateral Flexion devices were used to measure cervical and lumbar/thoracic ROM as well as muscle strength. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between groups in all ROM measurements except thoracic/lumbar sagittal flexion ROM measurement (p= 0.198). There were significant differences between groups in terms of muscle strength, except thoracic lumbar left rotation strength (p= 0.081). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the current study demonstrated that cervical and thoracic/lumbar range of motion, as well as muscle strength, were significantly decreased in surgically treated adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients compared to healthy counterparts. However, trunk (thoracic/lumbar) flexion range of motion and trunk left rotation muscle strength were not significantly different

    Thrombospondin 1 and Nuclear Factor Kappa B Signaling Pathways in Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

    Amaç: Alkolsüz yağlı karaciğer hastalığında (NAFLD) dolaşımdaki trombospondin-1 (TSP-1) ve nükleer faktör kappa B'yi (NF-κB) bu sinyal yolaklarını karaciğerin inflamatuar ve fibrojenik süreçlerine entegre etmek amacıyla değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. düzensizlik. Yöntemler: Çalışmaya 95 NAYKH hastası dahil edildi. Çalışmaya ayrıca yaş-cinsiyet uyumlu 83 sağlıklı kontrol dahil edildi. Bulgular: Metabolik sendrom (MetS) kriterlerine sahip hasta sayısı 57 (%60) idi. NAYKH grubunda TSP-1 düzeyi kontrol grubuna göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde düşük bulundu (p=0,037). Ancak NAYKH grubunda NF-κB düzeyi kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı olarak yüksek bulundu (p=0,004). Plazma TSP-1 düzeyleri ile glukoz (r=-0,235, p=0,022), alanin aminotransferaz (r=-0,261, p=0,011) ve aspartat transaminaz (r=-0,328, p=0,001) arasında anlamlı negatif korelasyon vardı. seviyeleri. Ayrıca plazma TSP-1 ile NF-κB düzeyleri arasında da anlamlı negatif korelasyon saptandı (r=-0,729, p<0,001). Methods: Ninety-five NAFLD patients were recruited in the study. The study also included 83 age-sex matched healthy controls. Results: The number of patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) criteria was 57 (60%). TSP-1 level was found to be statistically significantly lower in the NAFLD group compared to the control group (p=0.037). However, NF-κB level was found to be significantly higher in the NAFLD group compared to the control group (p=0.004). There was a significant negative correlation between plasma TSP-1 levels with glucose (r=-0.235, p=0.022), alanine aminotransferase (r=-0.261, p=0.011) and aspartate transaminase (r=-0.328, p=0.001) levels. In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between plasma TSP-1 and NF-κB levels (r=-0.729, p<0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest a close relationship between increased NF-κB and reduced TSP-1 in NAFLD. TSP-1 and NF-κB signaling pathways might have a role in the inflammatory and fibrogenic processes. Furthermore, they may be used as a noninvasive marker and could assist as a therapeutic target for NAFLD

    Quantitative Evaluation of Lung Parenchyma Changes after Treatment in COVID-19 Pneumonia with Volumetric Study in Computed Tomography

    Objective COVID-19 pandemic, causing approximately 3 million deaths over worldwide, still continues. Effect of COVID-19 pneumonia after treatment on the lungs still not know. Although widely using computed tomography (CT) for diagnosing COVID-19 pneumonia, there is not enough study to determine damage of lung after treatment in COVID-19 pneumonia. In this study, our aim was to evaluate lung parenchyma changes in COVID-19 pneumonia after treatment with volumetric study, quantitatively. Methods 25 patients, who has CT at the time of diagnosis (CT1) and after 282 days (CT2), and positive polymerase chain reaction test, were included in this retrospective single center study. Total lung volüme (TLV) and emphysematous lung (ELV) volume of CT1 and CT2 were calculated automatically by using Myrian® XP-Lung and Percentage of emphysematous area (PEA) was calculated by dividing ELV by TLV. Differences between CT1 and CT2 in PEA and in TLV and ELV was determined by Wilcoxon and Paired sample t test, respectively. Results Although higher TLV was found in CT2 (4216,43 ± 1048,99 cm3) than CT1 (3943,22 ± 1177,16 cm3), there was no statistical significance difference (p=0.052) between CT1 and CT2. ELV was statistically (p=0.017) higher in CT2 (937,22 ± 486,89 cm3) than CT1 (716,26 ± 471,65 cm3). There was a strong indication that the medians were significantly different in PEA (p=0,009). Conclusions Our study showed that there were emphysematous changes in lung parenchyma after COVID-19 pneumonia with CT, quantitatively and in our knowledge, this is the first study that evaluating lung changes quantitative after COVID-19 pneumonia.
