    Assessment of conventional and enhanced exergy analysis of the natural gas liquefaction plant

    The liquefaction method has become increasingly important in the natural gas trade as a result of both the cost and application difficulties associated with pipe transfer. In this study, enhanced exergy analysis of the cryogenic method used in the liquefaction of natural gas is discussed. When each component is examined, the highest exergy destruction was obtained in the turbine as 1,164 kW. The exergy efficiency of the overall system was calculated as 52.52%. In this study, the most significant consequence of exergy destruction n the turbine was discovered to be caused by unavoidable exergy destruction

    Population Kinetics and Protein Profiles of Co-Cultured Adult and Fetus Rabbit Bladder Smooth Muscle Cells

    Objective: Bladder tissue models have been developed using smooth muscle cells (SMCs) on various scaffolds to mimic bladder morphology and physiology. This study investigates the effects of co-culturing fetal and adult SMCs on growth properties and protein profiles to understand cellular interactions and population kinetics. Methods: Bladder tissue samples from 10 adult and 10 fetal New Zealand rabbits were divided into 5 groups: adult SMCs (A), fetal SMCs (F), 50%A + 50%F (A+F), 75%A + 25%F (3A+F), and 25%A + 75%F (A+3F). Population doubling time (PDT) of 3 x 106 cells from each group was measured after 48 and 72 hours. Protein concentrations were estimated by spectrophotometric analysis and analyzed via SDS-PAGE gel electrophoresis. Cells exhibited typical SMC morphology, confirmed by positive staining for alpha-SMA and MYH11. Results: Median cell counts of single cultures were significantly higher than co-cultures (P .05). Population doubling time at 72 hours for A, F, A+F, 3A+F, and A+3F were 89.4, 92.0, 89.4, 127.9, and 145.0 hours, respectively. Protein concentrations were similar between fetal and adult co-cultures (P > .05). Electrophoresis at 48 hours revealed a unique 80kDa band in adult cells and a 32kDa band in co-cultured cells. Conclusion: Co-culturing resulted in increased PDT, altered protein concentrations, and changes in protein profiles, while each cell population maintained its phenotype. Fetal bladder SMCs maintained their morphology and viability when co-cultured with adult SMCs, resulting in a significant limitation in the cumulative proliferation rate.This may be dependent on alterations of protein profiles of adult and fetal SMCs promoted by rearrangements in co-cultures

    The effects of a hypoglycaemia education programme on the outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes

    Aim: This study aims to evaluate how a Hypoglycaemia Education Programme (HEP) affects the hypoglycaemia outcomes of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Methods: This study which included a six-month follow-up was conducted with 101 patients with T2DM receiving insulin in the outpatient diabetes clinic. The patients were assigned to the HEP group (n = 51) and the control (n = 50) group. Patients in the HEP group participated in the Hypoglycaemia Education Programme. The patients in both groups were assessed at baseline, and one, three, and six months after HEP using the Clarke Hypoglycaemia Awareness Scale and the Hypoglycaemia Fear Survey in terms of frequency, self-management behaviours of hypoglycaemia, fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Results: The HEP group had a higher score of hypoglycaemia awareness in six months compared to the control group (p = 0.006). Fear of hypoglycaemia decreased significantly (p 0.05). While self-management behaviours for hypoglycaemia improved in the HEP group, no change was observed in the control group (p = 0.005). Moreover, HbA1c lowered significantly in the HEP group (p < 0.01). Conclusion: As a unique first programme on hypoglycaemia management in T2DM in Turkey, HEP is effective for improving selfmanagement behaviours for hypoglycaemia, hypoglycaemia awareness, and glycaemic control

    Characterization of speech and language phenotype in the 8p23.1 syndrome

    The 8p23.1 duplication syndrome is a rare genetic condition with an estimated prevalence rate of 1 out of 58,000. Although the syndrome was associated with speech and language delays, a comprehensive assessment of speech and language functions has not been undertaken in this population. To address this issue, the present study reports rigorous speech and language, in addition to oral-facial and developmental, assessment of a 50-month-old Turkish-speaking boy who was diagnosed with the 8p23.1 duplication syndrome. Standardized tests of development, articulation and phonology, receptive and expressive language and a language sample analysis were administered to characterize speech and language skills in the patient. The language sample was obtained in an ecologically valid, free play and conversation context. The language sample was then analyzed and compared to a database of age-matched typically-developing children (n = 33) in terms of intelligibility, morphosyntax, semantics/vocabulary, discourse, verbal facility and percentage of errors at word and utterance levels. The results revealed mild to severe problems in articulation and phonology, receptive and expressive language skills, and morphosyntax (mean length of utterance in morphemes). Future research with larger sample sizes and employing detailed speech and language assessment is needed to delineate the speech and language profile in individuals with the 8p23.1 duplication syndrome, which will guide targeted speech and language interventions

    Bu araştırmada hipertansiyon hastalarının DASH diyet kalitelerinin ve beslenme bilgi düzeylerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Nisan-Kasım 2023 tarihleri arasında bir sağlık kurumunun dahiliye polikliniğine başvuran 21-65 yaş arasındaki hipertansiyon hastaları ile yüz yüz anket yöntemi ile yapılan bu çalışmaya 110'u kadın, 67'si erkek toplamda 177 kişi katılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan hastaların demografik özellikleri "Genel Bilgiler Formu" ile, DASH diyet kalitelerinin ölçümü "DASH-Q" ölçeği ile, beslenme bilgi düzeylerinin ölçümü ise "YETBİD" ölçeği ile araştırmacı tarafından katılımcılar ile soru cevap yapılarak kaydedilmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan hastaların yaş ortalaması kadın ve erkeklerde sırasıyla 52.11±9.68 ve 57.09±7.11 yıldır. Erkeklerin ağırlık ve boy ortalaması 83.16±11.78 kg ve 172.91±7.43 cm, kadınların; 77.11±12.67 kg ve 160.24±6.64 cm'dir. BKİ ortalamaları ise kadınlarda 30.15±5.44 kg/m2, erkeklerde 27.80±3.51 kg/m2 bulunmuştur. Katılımcıların DASH-Q puanları incelendiğinde %44.6'sının orta, %54.2'sinin düşük ve yalnızca %1.1'inin yüksek diyet kalitesine sahip olduğu görülmüştür. YETBİD ölçeğinde 177 kişi arasında 12 kişi çok iyi bilgi seviyesinde, 28 kişi çok iyi besin tercihi kategorisindedir. Temel Beslenme ve Besin-Sağlık Bilgisi ölçeğine yanıt veren kişilerin %5.6'sı kötü bilgi seviyesine sahiptir. Besin Tercihi ölçeğinde ise katılımcıların %11.3'ünün kötü besin tercihi seviyesinde olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu çalışma sonucunda, Hipertansiyon hastalarının büyük bir çoğunluğunun yeterli düzeyde beslenme bilgisine sahip olmadığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Hipertansiyon hastalığı, koroner kalp hastalıkları, böbrek hastalıkları ve inme gibi rahatsızlıklara sebep olma riski açısından yüksek mortalite ve morbidite oranına sahiptir. Dolayısıyla hipertansiyonun tanı ve tedavisi halk sağlığının korunması ve iyileştirilmesi açısından önemlidir. Hipertansif bireylerin beslenme bilgi seviyelerinin arttırılması ve beslenme tedavisinin önemi konusunda bilinçlendirilmesi gereklidir. Totally, 177 adult participated to study, of which 110 women and 67 men. It was conducted by face-to-face survey method with hypertension patients between the ages of 21-65 who applied to the internal medicine clinic of a health institution between April and October 2023. the patients participating in the study were measured with the "General Information Form", DASH diet quality was measured with the "DASH-Q" scale, and nutritional knowledge levels were measured with the "YETBİD" scale. The researcher recorded these scales through a question-answer conversation with the participant. The mean age of participating patients was 52.11±9.68 years for women and 57.09±7.11 years for men. While the mean weight and height of men was 83.16±11.78 kg and 172.91±7.43 cm, for women; it was 77.11±12.67 kg and 160.24±6.64 cm. The mean BMI that found for women was 30.15±5.44 kg/m2 and 27.80±3.51 kg/m2 for men. When the DASH-Q score of the participants were examined, it was seen that 44.6% of the participants had medium diet quality, 54.2% had low and only 1.1% had high diet quality. In the research, 12 adults were evaluated as very good in knowledge level and 28 adults were evaluated as very good in food preference according to the YETBID scale. According to Base Nutrition and Nutrition-Health Knowledge scale 5.6% of the participants were found to have poor knowledge level. In the Food Preference scale, it was detected that 11.3% of the participants had a poor food preference level. It was concluded that the majority of Hypertension patients participating in the study did not have sufficient nutritional knowledge. Hypertension disease has a high mortality and morbidity rate in terms of the risk of causing coronary heart diseases, kidney diseases and strokes. Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension is important in order to protect and improve public health. It is essential to increase the nutritional knowledge of hypertensive individuals and to awake their awareness about the importance of nutritional treatment

    Analysis of Instagram Posts with the Hashtag Preventivedentistry

    This study aimed to analyze the posts published with the #preventivedentistry on Instagram. In this cross-sectional retrospective study, the #preventivedentistry was searched on Instagram. Data were collected between 01/10/2023 and 01/20/2023. A total of 940 posts were analyzed for type, purpose, and source. The number of likes of the posts and the number of video views were determined. Of the posts examined, 869 were images, and 71 were videos. Of the posts, 19.7% (n = 185) with the #preventivedentistry were about preventive dentistry. The content of 80.3% (n = 755) included advertisements, celebrations, information about other dental practices, patient satisfaction, and personal sharing. Among specialist dentists, pediatric dentists shared the most posts about preventive dentistry. Regardless of content, most of the posts had 0-25 likes, and only a small percentage had above 300 likes. People searching with #preventivedentistry on Instagram cannot find sufficient information about preventive dentistry. Dental professionals should use Instagram more actively to increase awareness of preventive dentistry

    Metformin represses the carcinogenesis potentially induced by 50 Hz magnetic fields in aged mouse fibroblasts via inhibition of NF-kB

    Aging is a risk factor for various human disorders, including cancer. Current literature advocates that the primary principles of aging depend on the endogenous stress-induced DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species 50 Hz low-frequency magnetic field was suggested to induce DNA damage and chromosomal instability. NF-kB, activated by DNA damage, is upregulated in age-related cancers and inhibition of NF-kB results in aging-related delayed pathologies. Metformin (Met), an NF-kB inhibitor, significantly reduces both NF-kB activation and expression in aging and cancer. This in vitro study, therefore, was set out to assess the effects of 5mT MF in 50 Hz frequency and Met treatment on the viability and proliferation of aged mouse NIH/3T3 fibroblasts and expression of RELA/p65, matrix metalloproteinases MMP2 and MMP9, and E-cadherin (CDH1) genes. The trypan blue exclusion assay was used to determine cell viability and the BrdU incorporation assay to determine cell proliferation. The MMP-2/9 protein analysis was carried out by immunocytochemistry, NF-kB activity by ELISA and the expressions of targeted genes by qRT-PCR methods. Four doses of Met (500 uM, 1 mM, 2 mM and 10 mM) suppressed both the proliferation and viability of fibroblasts exposed to the MF in a dose-dependent pattern, and the peak inhibition was recorded at the 10 mM dose. Met reduced the expression of NF-kB, and MMP2/9, elevated CDH1 expression and suppressed NF-kB activity. These findings suggest that Met treatment suppresses the carcinogenic potential of 50 Hz MFs in aged mouse fibroblasts, possibly through modulation of NF-kB activation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition modulation

    The role of cranial magnetic resonance imaging findings in pediatric epilepsy: A single-center experience

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in different age groups and genders in pediatric epilepsy, to determine the percentages of etiologic factors, and to evaluate the association between MRI positivity and treatment resistance. METHODS: Cranial MRIs of 359 patients with epilepsy aged 1 month to 18 years were retrospectively evaluated. Etiologic factors as an underlying cause of epilepsy were classified as previous parenchymal damage, hippocampal sclerosis, malformations of cortical development, tumor, neurocutaneous syndrome, myelination disorder, vascular anomaly, metabolic/genetic/ neurodegenerative diseases, encephalitis, and an uncategorized "other" group. Data were transferred to IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), and descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, chi-square, and t-tests were performed. RESULTS: Among the patients included in the study, 141 (39.3%) had pathological findings on MRI related to the etiology. Previous parenchymal damage (39.7%) was the most common etiologic cause in all age groups. Regarding the relationship between drug resistance and MRI positivity, MRI positivity was observed in 72% of drug-resistant cases, while a complete response to therapy was found in 67.6% of MRI-negative cases. CONCLUSION: MRI guides clinicians to determine the presence of an etiologic factor as the underlying cause of childhood epilepsy before treatment planning. MRI positivity is a remarkable indicator of response to antiseizure drug treatment and drug resistance

    Evaluation of Clinical and Immunological Alterations Associated with ICF Syndrome

    Purpose: Immunodeficiency with centromeric instability and facial anomalies (ICF) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive combined immunodeficiency. The detailed immune responses are not explored widely. We investigated known and novel immune alterations in lymphocyte subpopulations and their association with clinical symptoms in a well-defined ICF cohort. Methods: We recruited the clinical findings from twelve ICF1 and ICF2 patients. We performed detailed immunological evaluation, including lymphocyte subset analyses, upregulation, and proliferation of T cells. We also determined the frequency of circulating T follicular helper (cTFH) and regulatory T (Treg) cells and their subtypes by flow cytometry. Results: There were ten ICF1 and two ICF2 patients. We identified two novel homozygous missense mutations in the ZBTB24 gene. Respiratory tract infections were the most common recurrent infections among the patients. Gastrointestinal system (GIS) involvements were observed in seven patients. All patients received intravenous immunoglobulin replacement therapy and antibacterial prophylaxis; two died during the follow-up period. Immunologically, CD4+ T-cell counts, percentages of recent thymic emigrant T cells, and naive CD4+ T decreased in two, five, and four patients, respectively. Impaired T-cell proliferation and reduced CD25 upregulation were detected in all patients. These changes were more prominent in CD8+ T cells. GIS involvements negatively correlated with CD3+ T-, CD3+CD4+ T-, CD16+CD56+ NK-cell counts, and CD4+/CD8+ T-cell ratios. Further, we observed expanded cTFH cells and reduced Treg and follicular regulatory T cells with a skewing to a TH2-like phenotype in all tested subpopulations. Conclusion: The ICF syndrome encompasses various manifestations affecting multiple end organs. Perturbed T-cell responses with increased cTFH and decreased Treg cells may provide further insight into the immune aberrations observed in ICF syndrome
