Co-occurrence of neurocysticercosis and taeniasis within communities of northern Peru: implications for anthelminthic treatment strategies

    Get PDF
Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a central nervous system (CNS) infection with Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), is a leading infectious cause of epilepsy in endemic areas. Treating T. solium taeniasis with anthelminthic medications (AHMs) like niclosamide or praziquantel (PZQ) is essential to prevent NCC. However, co-infections of taeniasis with viable NCC, the presence of living CNS cysts, impose a risk of neurological adverse events with PZQ, complicating treatment decisions. The availability and type of AHMs and lack of feasible diagnostic methods for NCC in community settings is a major challenge in informing anthelminthic treatment decisions, warranting exploration of NCC prevalence among people with taeniasis. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of taeniasis in screened communities and the prevalence of NCC, along with key characteristics, among people with confirmed taeniasis from northern Peru

Mental hygiene, a challenge to public health nursing

    Get PDF
The Challenge to Public Health Nursing is to aid in the prevention of and the ability to deal with mental and nervous diseases. For too long have we been willing and desirous of thinking that physical and mental health were two separate and entirely different things that one must be stressed, while the other can be more or less ignored. Too long have we been willing to nurse a diseased organ and neglect the mental reaction created in that individual because of illness. Too long have we emphasized the physical and neglected the mental. In medicine, there is now the realization that these two phases of health, or of sickness, can no longer be separated--physical well-being is dependent on mental well-being and vice versa

    Tuberculosis, a scientific problem

    Get PDF
It has been interesting to note in studying this particular disease of mankind the rapid progress made in developing methods of its control. In reviewing the work of those men who worked untiringly to discover the cause of tuberculosis and some method of control we pause and pay tribute to them. Most of the science we learn today represents the accumulation of discoveries painstakingly explored by pioneers. These pioneers left theories and facts that enabled the present day explorer in science to reach new facts and conclusions that are valuable. By retraveling some of the trails with these pioneers in the field and obtaining a historical viewpoint we will be able to appreciate more truly their struggles and work
