Nursing and public health in England

    Get PDF
Nursing has been considered a profession only since the establishment of training schools with the definitive standard of curriculum. In early English history, there were almost no doctors and none at all outside the important cities. The monks and nuns, all self-taught, became the prescribers for the community white noblewomen, who had a great number of servants and people dependent upon them, also developed skills in the art of healing. Educated persons, both men and women, were taught a little “physic†and surgery as part of their schooling. The “nurse†was little more than a ward maid, and there could not have been much real nursing done

We may be well pleased to find ourselves living in a period of conscientious effort toward advancement, rather than in the age of decline a few centuries ago. At the present time, we are slowly mounting another curve. We are becoming aware that much must be done to give our mothers and babies the peace, comfort, and safety, science affords. In order to change such a low standing, we must turn to our state and inquire as to what she is doing

    Obstetrics

    No full text
It is difficult to give an in-depth description of obstetrics in all its many and varied phases in such a short paper. I merely touch upon many of these subjects, each of which could have been written upon by many persons in many volumes. Prenatal Care, for example, is a subject large enough for a thesis. I hope in this paper to have put in simple, understandable forms the basic principles of obstetrics and care of obstetrical patients, something which may be of value to anyone interested in obstetrics who might chance to read this paper.

Incorporating health education into the public school

    No full text
Health education is the sum of all experiences which favorably influence habits, attitudes, and knowledge related to the individual, community, and racial health. It therefore must take into consideration all the numerous influences of the entire environment and the program of health education in schools must consider these factors in planning a livable, workable program to carry over into adult life. School health programs take place at school, through organized efforts and are conducted by school personnel. It should mean all efforts which accustom the child to the most favorable habit formation for daily living. Habits which will automatically carry over into adult life

    Supervision

    No full text
The idea of a supervisor has changed from that of a taskmaster to that of a teacher, taking teacher in its broadest aspect, for we must admit that teaching and teachers have changed. Supervision thus means more than inspection. It judges the work and the worker; it studies them and their relationships and their development.

    Thesis on living

    No full text
The subject of living, itself, is far greater than either my time or ability can cope with, and through necessity, it must be narrowed down to a bird's eye view of living as seen by a nurse. Naturally, the health part of living will be my vantage point; from here I'll undoubtedly ramble from physician to nurse, punctuated with psychology, interspersed with psychiatry and sociology. From all these must come my own viewpoint of living
