Multi-racial Singapore in history textbooks : How did Singapore’s history textbooks describe its ethnic diversity?

かにシンガポール国内で教えられてきたのか。本研究では、歴史教科書に描かれた多民族国
家としてのシンガポールの自国像の変容とその意味を明らかにする。そのために1999 年か
ら2015 年に発行された中学校の歴史教科書における民族的多様性の記述及び「人種」問題
についての記述を分析した。その結果、民族的多様性の描写及び民族的多様性に対する認識
が時代によって変化してきたことが明らかになった。更に、本研究は、この変化がシンガポ
ール政府の望む自国像の変化を反映したものであるとともに、移民の流入で増大する民族
的多様性への対応策としても使われたことを指摘した。
Singapore is considered as a peaceful multi-racial nation comprising of four races;
Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Others. How has this multi-racial image of the country been
disseminated among students via history textbooks? This study examined the
transformation of Singapore’s self-image as a multi-racial nation by exploring various
descriptions of ethnic diversity and racial issues, in history textbooks published from
1999 to 2015. Consequently, the study revealed that the latest textbook described and
admired richer ethnic diversity than previous textbooks did. This suggests that
Singapore’s self-image changed from a multi-racial one to an ethnically more diverse one.
The study also reveals that the government used history textbooks to facilitate young
people’s adaptation to a globalized Singapore which is characterized by an increasing
diversity
