This study aims to elucidate and confirm the possibilities and conditions for postmodern
practices, reviewing the arguments in environmental thought—particularly those in
environmental ethics and social philosophy—comparing between modernism and
postmodernism. Some arguments can be read as postmodernist debate in that they develop
a criticism of the modernism, which has destroyed the natural environments after the
industrial revolution.
Environmental ethics criticizes the anthropocentrism in modern moral theory that
eliminates animals and other members of ecological systems from the category of moral
subjects. Social philosophy on environmental issues also criticizes modernism as a practical
project based on the Cartesian dualism between subject and object. It is supposed that, as
the project proceeds, natural environments and their constituents become dead objects to be
dominated by human beings as a single subject to control them.
Both arguments correlate with the assertion of the decentralization of anthropocentric
modernist thought. However, they both present a practical remedy that seemingly contains
a danger of totalitarianism that is again based on modernist dualism. This study examines
the market potential for a postmodern practical institution that can simultaneously realize
decentralized integration and protection of natural environments
