Utilization of Moodle LMS Functionality to Facilitate Learning in Online Pre-Enrollment Education Courses

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) emphasizes the importance of pre-entrance education to maintain students' study habits and motivation during the period between early university acceptance and university enrollment in April. However, many universities face difficulty providing such pre-enrollment education due to development costs and the staff labor time required to implement it.This paper outlines the basic functionality and features of two online pre-enrollment courses created using the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS): an English course and a Japanese national language course. There are a number of advantages to using the Moodle LMS for these courses, but the greatest advantage is that the automated grading system allows implementation for a large number of learners, while significantly reducing staff involvement. The Moodle LMS also facilitates learner participation in pre-enrollment courses by enabling the use of familiar devices such as smartphones, by allowing the creation of a variety of learning activities, and by building solidarity between teachers and students and among students prior to enrollment
