A crack driving force criterion for the prediction of interface crack kinking in thin-film composites
Interfacial fracture mechanics is a relatively new field with many issues that have not yet been resolved. One such issue is the ability to accurately predict whether or not a bimaterial interface crack will propagate along the interface, kink into the film or substrate, or not propagate at all. In the present work, a crack driving force criterion is proposed in order to predict the level of applied load required to propagate a pre-existing interface crack in thin-film composites subjected to thermal loading. A primary objective is to predict the critical length of an interface crack at which it kinks into the substrate. The phenomenon of interface cracks kinking into the substrate is frequently observed when the film is under tensile loading and the substrate is brittle. An interface crack that advances into the substrate eventually propagates parallel to the interface at a certain steady-state depth. Ultimately, the portion of the structure that remains above the crack may spall, resulting in catastrophic failure. The crack driving force criterion is applied to a two-dimensional, plane strain interface crack problem, and the results compare favorably with available experimental results
Composite osteocutaneous groin flap combined with neurovascular island flap for thumb reconstruction
Three amputated thumbs were reconstructed with a composite osteocutaneous groin flap and a neurovascular island flap. The average age at the time of surgery was 28 (range 25-35) years. The level of the amputation was distal to metacarpophalangeal joint in two cases and proximal in one case. The injury mechanism was avulsion in all cases. The postoperative follow-up periods ranged from 27 to 30 months. There were no cases of skin necrosis, bone resorption or infection. Radiographs and three-phase bone scans showed union of the iliac bone block and the stump without any resorption in all three patients. This surgical procedure is reliable and simple and the functional results are satisfying. We reserve this technique for the treatment of thumb amputations which cannot be replanted, particularly as it does not result in bone resorption. The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications. Bone generation on PHBV matrices: An in vitro study
Bone formation was investigated in vitro by culturing rat marrow stromal osteoblasts in biodegradable, macroporous poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid-co-3-hydroxyvaleric acid) (PHBV) matrices over a period of 60 days. Foams were prepared after solvent evaporation and solute leaching. PHBV solutions with different concentrations were prepared in chloroform: dichloromethane (1:2, v/v). In order to create a matrix with high porosity and uniform pore sizes, sieved sucrose crystals (300-500μm) were used. PHBV foams were treated with rf-oxygen plasma (100W 10min) to modify their surface chemistry and hydrophilicity with the aim of increasing the reattachment of osteoblasts. Osteoblasts were isolated from rat bone marrow and seeded onto PHBV foams. The cell density on and in the foams was determined with MTS assay. MTS results showed that osteoblasts proliferated on PHBV. Twenty-one days after seeding of incubation, growth of osteoblasts on matrices and initiation of mineralization were observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Increasing ALP and osteocalcin secretion during 60 days confirmed the osteoblastic phenotype of the derived stromal cells. SEM, histological evaluations and confocal laser scanning microscopy showed that osteoblasts could grow inside the matrices and lead to mineralization. Cells exhibited spindle-like morphology and had a diameter of 10-30μm. Based on these, it could confidently be stated that PHBV seems to be a promising polymeric matrix material for bone tissue engineering. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Türkiye’ de Biyomedikal Mühendisliği Lisans Programlarının Son Beş Yılı ve 2020 yılı için Öngörüler
In this study, the files published on OSYM web site that consist of the lists of Higher education degree programs accepting students via central placements are inspected for a five-year period starting from the year of 2010. Considering the Biomedical engineering programs, universities, quotas and the number of students placed were noted. Using the data noted, several tables and graphs providing valuable information were generated and interpreted. A number of predictions were made for the year of 2020. In both public and private universities, both the number of programs and quotas show increases in the last five year period. Total number of program vs. year and total number of quota vs. year data can be represented by linear curves with positive slopes. The number of students placed in state universities is increasing rapidly and continuously. The increase in the number of students placed in private universities is slower and has a tendency to decrease in the year of 2014. However, the total number of students placed tends to increase and this data can be fitted to a linear curve with a positive slope. The occupancy rate changes from 88 to 80 while it is 100 for public universities independent of years. The occupancy rate in private universities tends to decrease over the years. Considering the 2014 data, quotas provided by most public universities are quite higher than the ones provided by private universities. These high quotas in public universities are provided with secondary education services. The majority of the quotas in private universities are provided for 50 scholarships. The highest quota is provided in Istanbul by private universities. Another city where private universities provide all quotas is Ankara. In Izmir, two halves of the quota are provided by private and state universities. All of the quotas in other cities are provided by public universities. Predictions made for the year of 2020 show that the total quota of biomedical engineering will be 2554, the number of students to be placed will be 2055 and the number of programs will be 43. Private universities are estimated to have 34 occupancy rate. It should be noted that during calculation of this ratio, a 100 of average occupancy rate for the public universities have been considered. © 2014 IEEE.The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications. Productivity and technical change in Malaysian banking: 1989-1998
This study examines the impact of deregulation and technological change on the productivity of Malaysian banks over the period 1989-1998. Malmquist indices constructed with nonparametric DEA techniques are decomposed into their pure efficiency, scale efficiency, and technological change components. Our findings indicate an erosion of banking productivity that masks divergent tendencies among its component elements. These are dominated by adverse effects of technological change, which are associated with a reduction in the labor intensity of banking activity. Consistent with the mixed findings reported in the literature, the present investigation suggests that regulatory reform and liberalization are not sufficient conditions for productivity improvement. © Springer 2005
Spectroscopic study of p-methoxy-styrene in aqueous media
Flash spectroscopic study of p-methoxy-styrene (hereafter PMS) in water at room temperature gave first order photochemical reactions. In the first step an excited singlet S1 is created then S1→S0 transitions were recorded. The 1/e decay time of promt fluorescence of PMS in water at room temperature were measured by using flash photolysis technique, and the fluorescence decay time was found to be 19 ns. Due to the various quenching processes neither delayed fluorescences nor triplet-triplet emissions could be recorded. The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications. Triplet-triplet absorption of salicylidene-p-toluidine in solution
The observation of triplet-triplet absorption of salicylidene-p-toluidine is complicated because of the possible colored isomer formation during the optical pumping. The short-lived (singlet-singlet) and long-lived (triplet-triplet) absorption spectra were recorded photographically by microsecond flash photolysis and nanosecond laser flash photolysis techniques. Salicylidene complexes were purified by repeated recrystallisation until further recrystallisation produced no further changes for x-ray diffraction pattern and, optical absorbtion and emission properties. The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications. Isolation of moderately infectious Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto from attenuated cultures by using complement-mediated, antibody-dependent lysis selection technique in a mammalian tissue co-culture system
We investigated the association between complement resistance and phenotypes of pathogenicity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato isolates cultivated in a LEW/N rat tibiotarsal joint-derived tissue feeder layer-supported co-culture system. Guinea pig complement and immune serum raised in LHS/Ss hamsters caused complete lysis of B. burgdorferi sensu stricto isolate 297, B. afzelii and B. garinii in Barbour-Stoenner-Kelly's medium; however, tissue co-cultured B. burgdorferi sensu stricto contained complement escape variants . The arthritogenicity and infectivity of these variants were tested in 3-week-old Syrian hamsters and in a vaccinated hamster model in which formalin-killed B. burgdorferi sensu stricto C-1-11 vaccinated animals develop severe arthritis after challenge with live, pathogenic, low-passage 297 isolate. Non-animal-passaged complement escape variants were infectious in both animal models as demonstrated by re-isolation from the infected animals and competitive PCR. IP injection of animal-passaged complement escape variants caused development of severe arthritis in vaccinated animals 5 weeks post-injection; animal passage of complement escape variants was necessary for isolation of arthritogenic spirochetes from high-passaged, non-arthritogenic, attenuated borrelia cultures. Complement escape variants synthesized outer surface protein E as demonstrated by SDS-PAGE and western blotting analyses. The complement-mediated selection technique in tissue co-culture provides a novel approach to the studies of Lyme disease, enables us to isolate pathogenically distinct borrelia populations from attenuated cultures and prepare a moderately infectious, non-pathogenic live vaccine against this illness. © 2003 Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS. Borrelia cultures Cloned isolate of B. burgdorferi sensu stricto 297 was obtained from Russell C. Johnson (Department of Microbiology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis), B. burgdorferi sensu stricto C-1-11, B. garinii isolate LV4 and B. afzelii isolate BV1 were provided by Steve Lovrich (Gundersen Clinic, LaCrosse, WI). Borrelia were cultured in BSK-H medium (Sigma), or in LEW/N rat tibiotarsal joint-derived tissue co-culture system using ESG medium which contains Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) in addition to components of BSK-H in modified quantities and fetal bovine serum (FBS) instead of rabbit serum (Table 1). Low-passaged B. burgdorferi (lBSK) were cultured twice and hBSK were maintained by weekly passages (400×) in BSK-H at 33 °C. Tissue co-cultured spirochetes were collected with a sterile rubber policeman from the feeder layer and enumerated by using a Petroff–Hauser chamber under a phase contrast microscope
Temporomandibular internal derangement: Correlation of MRI findings with clinical symptoms of pain and joint sounds in patients with bruxing behaviour
Objectives: The aim of this study was to correlate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of effusion, disc displacement, condylar bony changes and disc form with clinical findings of pain and sounds in patients with bruxing and non-bruxing behaviour. Methods: Disc displacement was confirmed by MRI in 102 joints from 64 patients (total of 128 joints) with bruxing behaviour who were referred for clinically diagnosed internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Sixty joints with internal derangement from 30 patients without bruxing behaviour served as a control group. The clinical inclusion criteria were pain in the pre-auricular area and muscles of mastication, limitation or deviation in mandibular range of motion, and TMJ sounds. Signs of bruxism were diagnosed clinically and were obtained from the patient's history given on their first visit. Pain was evaluated using a visual analogue scale. Results: Of the 102 joints in the study group with disc displacement, 53 (52) showed disc displacement with reduction and 49 (48) showed disc displacement without reduction. In the control group, 16 joints were classified as normal. Of the remaining 44 joints, 27 (61) had disc displacement with reduction and 17 (39) had unilateral disc displacement without reduction. Condylar bony changes were seen in 55 of the reducing joints in the study group and in 38 of the reducing joints in the control group, compared with 86 of the non-reducing joints in the study group and 24 of the non-reducing joints in the control group. There was a strong correlation between age and degenerative change in the study group. In the reducing joints, there was a significant difference in the prevalence of condylar bony changes between the study and control groups (P < 0.01). In non-reducing joints, 30 of painful joints in the study group and 59 of those in the control group showed a strong signal in the joint space on T2 weighted imaging. Statistically significant differences between the study and control groups were also found for disc form and the prevalence of effusion and disc displacement. Joint sounds were important in unilaterally affected joints in the study group. A statistically significant correlation was found between joint sounds and reducing joints (P < 0.05). Conclusion: It was demonstrated that a higher prevalence of condylar bony changes occurred in reducing joints in patients with bruxing behaviour. The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications.
