A note on the use of a fuzzy approach in adaptive partitioning algorithms for global optimization

    No full text
In global optimization, adaptive partitioning algorithms (APA) operate on the basis of partitioning the feasible region into subregions, sampling and evaluating each subregion, and selecting one or more subregions for repartitioning. The purpose of the repartitioning process is to locate a narrow neighborhood around the global optimum. In this correspondence, we propose to use a fuzzy approach in the assessment of subregions using random samples taken from these subregions. We discuss different types of uncertainties involved in APA and we conclude that the use of a fuzzy approach in the assessment of subregions is in concurrence with APA's convergence property. We provide numerical results for the fuzzy approach on 13 test functions from the literature. © 1999 IEEE.The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications. Acute lung injury following thermal insult to the skin: A light and transmission electron microscopial study

    No full text
Oxygen radicals are involved in the development of burn shock and distant organ injury in animal models of trauma. Neutrophils are likely the source of reactive oxygen metabolites as a result of the systemic inflammatory reaction to a local burn insult. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of neutrophils in the development of lung injury related to second degree skin burn in rats. Rats were decapitated at two hours following burn injury. Lung tissue samples were removed and examined biochemically and histologically. Tissue-associated myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, which is an index of neutrophil infiltration, was increased considerably in lung tissue at 2 h after burn injury. Disturbance of alveolar structure, intraalveolar hemorrhage and prominent neutrophil infiltration indicated lung parenchymal injury. Ultrastructural examination of the lung revealed that pneumocytes type I, pneumocytes type II and capillary endothelial cells were degenerated. The data presented here suggest that neutrophil accumulation in the lung is involved in pathogenesis of this distant organ after burn injury. The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications. A hierarchical decision support system for production planning (with case study)

    No full text
We propose a Hierarchical Decision Support System (HDSS) for production planning which enables production planners to utilize complex and structured planning algorithms interactively with no difficulty. The suggested system represents a higher level planning tool than MRP: namely, it encompasses aggregate planning, family and end item planning levels. The HDSS is integrated with MRP through the Master Production Schedule (at the end item level) which is transferred to MRP. The feasibility at all planning levels is preserved through database manipulations which enable communication among different planning hierarchies. The key features of the proposed system are the ease of data manipulation and the highly interactive nature of the system provided by the user-interface. The dialogue management system hides the theoretical background of the model base consisting of multi-optional aggregate planning models and disaggregation algorithms used at the family and end item planning levels. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications.
