The Relationship between Hearing Impairment and Tinnitus among Workers at PT. Rejeki Abadi Sambosar
Background. Hearing loss is a health problem commonly experienced by workers
exposed to noise in industrial environments. Exposure to high-intensity and
prolonged noise can cause damage to the cochlear hair cells, which function to
transmit sound waves. One manifestation that frequently appears alongside hearing
loss is tinnitus, which is the perception of sound without any external source. These
two conditions are interrelated and commonly found in individuals with a history
of noise exposure, although the degree of their association may vary across
different working populations. Objective. To determine the relationship between
hearing loss and the occurrence of tinnitus among workers at PT Rejeki Abadi
Sambosar (RAS). Methods. This study used a descriptive–analytic design with a
cross-sectional approach and consecutive sampling technique. Hearing loss was
assessed through audiometric examination, while tinnitus severity was measured
using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). Results. Most respondents had
normal hearing. The most frequent hearing disorder was sensorineural hearing
loss, followed by conductive and mixed hearing loss. A total of 44% of respondents
experienced tinnitus, with the moderate category being the most dominant. The Chi-
Square test showed a significant relationship between hearing loss and tinnitus (p
< 0.001). Conclusion. Most respondents were aged 36–45 years, all were male,
and the majority had worked for less than five years. Sensorineural hearing loss
was the most commonly found type. Tinnitus among workers was generally in the
moderate category, and there was a significant relationship between hearing loss
and the occurrence of tinnitus.93 PagesSkripsi Sarjan
