ePortfolio and Service-Learning: A Tale of Two Cities Connected by Two High-Impact Practices

    Get PDF
Two different post-secondary professional education programs from two different cities (New York and Madrid) took a similar approach in using ePortfolio to facilitate high-impact behaviors (HIBs) among their students while showing how the ePortfolio enhances and supports other high impact practices (HIPs). In Madrid, ePortfolio was utilized to support a Matumaini Project as it integrated the academic work carried out in the classrooms to help a community in Kenya. On the other side of the Atlantic, the ePortfolio was implemented in order to connect didactic learning from the classroom to the clinical practice in the local community. Both case studies suggested that the ePortfolio combined with other high-impact practices plays a complementary role with other High-Impact Practices (HIPs) in higher education. Our statistical analysis sheds light on the relationship between seven high-impact behaviors present when two high-impact practices are combined. The correlations, both combined and by city, demonstrate the importance of promoting two highimpact behaviors in particular, which are: 1) quality interaction between the students and the professors and 2) providing opportunities to relate academic learning to real world experiences. When these two high-impact behaviors were maximized, our data suggest that the use of other high-impact behaviors examined in this study expanded as well. This research also confirms the importance of providing students a way to relate their classroom learning with real-world experiences.

Se reafirma la nece sidad de intervenciones programadas en educación emocional, como pieza clave del desarrollo del bienestar personal y psicológico y, en consecuencia, de una adecuada salud mental adolescenteProtective factors of mental health, such as emotional intelligence, values, and a wide spectrum of variables pertaining to personal and psychological adjustment, have become a main focus for research in recent years. The general aim of this study, with its quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, inferential and correlational methodology, was to verify the relationships between emotional intel ligence, values, self-esteem, optimism and frustration tolerance in an adolescent population. Information was collected from a sample of 161 secondary education students in Madrid (Spain) (age in years: M = 14.51; SD = 1.74). From the results obtained, self-esteem, optimism and frustration tolerance were observed in positive relationships with the variables emotional clarity, emotional repair, social commitment and gratitude. Gratitude and social recognition were confirmed as predictors in self-esteem and optimism, as was emo tional repair in optimism and frustration tolerance. The need for programmed interventions in emotional education is reaffirmed as a key element in the development of personal and psychological well-being and, consequently, of adequate mental health in adolescents.Psicología y Ciencias de la Salu

Social intelligence and psychological distress: subjective and psychological well-being as mediators

    Get PDF
The strength named “social intelligence” in the Values in Action (VIA) Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues represents emotional, personal, and social intelligences, which are considered “hot intelligences”. This work contributed to the study of the mechanisms of influence of social intelligence on mental health. A multiple mediation model was proposed to quantify the direct effect of social intelligence on psychopathological symptoms, as well as its indirect effect through its impact on components of subjective and psychological well-being. This study involved 1407 university students who completed the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWBS), and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Social intelligence was found to be significantly associated with life satisfaction (a = 0.33, p < 0.001), positive affect (a = 0.42, p < 0.001), and negative affect (a = −0.21, p < 0.001), transmitting significant indirect effects on psychopathological symptomatology through these components of subjective well-being. Likewise, social intelligence was positively and significantly related to psychological well-being (a-paths ranged from 0.31 to 0.43, p < 0.001), exerting significant and negative indirect effects on psychological distress through the dimension of positive relations with other people. These results could be useful in order to expand the explanatory models of the influence of social intelligence on mental health and to design interventions based on this strength for the promotion of well-being and the reduction in psychological distress.Psicología y Ciencias de la Salu

Emotional intelligence and academic achievement: a developmental model

One of the main motivations of this research was to help correct the lack of instruments designed specifically for the measure for Emotional Intelligence (EI) in children. EMOCINE (emotion in the cinema scenes) is a measurement instrument of EI based on two of the primary factors considered in Mayer and Saloveys’IE model: emotional perception and comprehension. The latent class analysis performed on the scores obtained in a sample of 776 children (48.5% girls and 51.5% boys), with an average age of 9.2 years (SD=1.4) supports a three-stage evolutionary model in which there are more basic elements, such as emotional perception, that precede more complex ones, such as emotional comprehension. EI shows, when evaluated through this measure, a positive relationship with Academic Performance. Additionally, girls 'scores in perception and emotional comprehension were consistently higher than boys.

Social networks are currently crucial to communication in all contexts and the possibilities for information dissemination are no longer concentrated in the hands of media companies. Hence, using quantitative methodology, the research analyses the communication strategies of the political parties participating in the 2018 elections to the Parliament of Andalusia (Spain) on Instagram, as well as the role of journalists and the media in relation to the engagement obtained. The results show that only the VOX party developed a nationally planned strategy and that individual journalists achieved higher dissemination and generated more engagement than news corporations. On the other hand, any message in meme format received the largest dissemination in comparison with other types of message. The time- frame imposed a limitation on the research as it focused on a single electoral campaign. It is expected that future papers will analyse new electoral campaigns so the conclusions presented here may be endorsed.Comunicació

The Potential of the ePortfolio as a Recruitment Tool: from the Perspective of HR Directors

    Get PDF
In this paper, the authors explore the potential of the electronic portfolio (ePortfolio) as a recruitment tool, in particular whether Human Resources directors would be willing to use it during the recruitment and selection process. The ePortfolio presents, documents, reflects on, and fosters students’ skills, credentials, certificates and diverse formal and informal experiences in a structured and well-organized manner. Because the ePortfolio is, by nature, flexible and adaptable, an ePortfolio developed with the help of professors over the course of a students' studies can easily be incorporated into professional networking platforms as a job search tool and showcase the skills required for a successful applicant. It is often said that the difference between what is taught in the academic world and the practical skills that are required by the business sector make it difficult for students to access the labor market. The ePortfolio may help to reconcile both worlds. In order to examine whether Human Resources directors are willing to use an ePortfolio as a recruitment tool, a survey was carried out among fifty-two Human Resources directors. The research findings reveal that an educational ePortfolio can count on significant approval in the business sector. This research study is relevant as it provides valuable information on this topic and it is the only one to date, conducted among HR directors in the context of Spanish-speaking countries.Educació

Could we think about friendship relationships without emotions? the other-oriented emotions

    Get PDF
With the purpose of providing conceptual elements to help educators and psychologists in the development of friendship relationships through emotions, this article a) describes the essential elements of friendship and b) psychologically analyses its emotional content. The relation between those emotions and their certain hierarchical nature leads us to pay attention to the presence of other-directed emotions and other-oriented emotions. We use the analysis of theoretical and applied studies, especially from emotion and social psychology, which confirm the description of friendship. They appear as emotions linked to friendship: love, attachment, affinity, self-esteem (its emotional dimension), altruism, embarrassment, and hope; also, wellness and satisfaction are emotions of friendship. In a negative way, resentment, envy, susceptibility, jealousy and shyness. Psychology leads to the differentiation, among others, of emotions that provoke a benefit to oneself (attachment), derived emotions (well-being, satisfaction), selfless emotions (altruism), emotions that raise the friend (compassion and forgiveness) and reciprocal emotions (empathy, affinity). Especially love stands out. Its specific notes suggest new studies. It is recommended, in order to perform a psychological or educational intervention, to promote selflessness and decentering, as well as the ability to compromise and assume responsibilities, to be able to have deep friendships.Psicologí
