Recognizing Race: Podcasting To Promote Critical Dialogue And Self-Reflection In Multicultural Psychology
Introduction: Courses in multicultural psychology can provide content about power, privilege, healing, and resistance, especially as they pertain to race, while presenting space for students to reflect on their own socialization experiences and the role of race in their lives. Statement of Problem: Direct, lecture-based approaches to presenting course content on race and racial identity can impede deep reflection and application of the material to students’ lives and their ability to engage across differences. Literature Review: Critical dialogue among classroom peers enables students to use the knowledge gained from classroom content to discuss the complexity of race and racism with nuance and depth. Teaching Implications: In this article, we describe Recognizing Race, a podcast assignment that scaffolds students’ self-reflection about their racial identity development while facilitating critical racial dialogues between students. Conclusion: The Recognizing Race podcast assignment is one that can be used for undergraduate and graduate-level students in multicultural psychology to apply racial identity concepts to increase cultural self-awareness and promote more compassionate and inclusive interactions with others

Relatively Unworthy Victims? Middle-Aged Women As Rape Survivors
This study examines how the age of female survivors impacts public perceptions of rape in China. In our online survey experiment, participants consider rape as less serious when the survivor is a middle-aged woman compared to other groups of women (younger, older, or age unknown). Participants also request shorter sentencing when the survivor is a middle-aged woman than a younger woman. In China, moral codes surrounding chastity and respect for elders lead to greater emotional responses toward rape against younger and older survivors than middle-aged survivors. Our study expands studies of rape perception by theorizing public attitudes toward middle-aged survivors

This article considers how recent moments of racism and violence in the United States, ethnomusicology, and the Society for Ethnomusicology are linked to larger movements. I examine the work of Asian American and Asian Canadian artists and activists to engage with conversations about violence, racialization, and solidarity. I bring these conversations in concert with recent discussions of racism in music studies to connect moments to movements and examine models for change through processes of decolonization. I call upon readers to embrace discomfort, listening, and reflection to engage with work that is relational and intergenerational and that demonstrates hope, care, and solidarity

Although Black cowboys have been a fixture on the American landscape since the nineteenth century, few people are aware of their enduring contributions to the history of the West and how their unique culture continues to thrive today in urban as well as rural areas all over the country. The book features Ron Tarver\u27s beautiful, compelling, and often surprising contemporary images of African-American cowboys that not only convey the Black cowboy\u27s way of life and its rich heritage, but also affirm a thriving culture of Black-owned ranches and rodeo operations, parades, inner-city cowboys, retired cowhands, and Black cowgirls of all ages, too. Tarver, who grew up in a family of Black cowboys in Oklahoma, uses his artistry to question, if not upend, long-held notions of what it means to be a cowboy and, with that, what it means to be an American
Probing Nuclear HSATII Biomolecular Condensates
Human satellite sequence II (HSATII) is a tandemly repeated pericentric and heterochromatic sequence that is transcriptionally silent in normal human cells, yet in cancer cells HSATII RNA is aberrantly expressed and accumulates large nuclear foci that remain in cis at their sites of transcription. Expression and aggregation of HSATII RNA is concomitant with sequestration of key chromatin regulatory proteins known to phase separate including MeCP2. While HSATII expression is highly correlated with higher grade tumors in various epithelial cancer cell lines, the effect of its nuclear misregulation is poorly understood. Due to the upregulation of HSATII RNA expression in cancer, accumulation of the HSATII RNA in cis, sequestration of key regulatory phase-separating proteins, and its repetitive nature, we hypothesized that HSATII RNA is a molecular scaffold that nucleates and forms phase-separated biomolecular condensates in vivo. Condensates are increasingly recognized as important for cellular function and dysfunction. Here, we present evidence that HSATII RNA assembles into biomolecular condensates via in vitro assays. We also employ an in vivo disruption assay that utilizes doxorubicin and 1,6-hexanediol, both drugs known to specifically target and disrupt condensates in vivo. Treatment with both these drugs resulted in significant redistribution of HSATII RNA in living cells. Characterizing HSATII RNA focal accumulations as condensates provides a mechanistic account for pathological phenotypes in cancer. While this study serves to demonstrate that HSATII RNA foci can form condensates, it also has broader implications for drug development in cancer therapeutics
The Influence Of Resource Patch Condition And Size On Social Interactions, Reproductive Behaviors, And Oviposition In A Fungivorous Beetle
Variation among resource patches can structure spatial patterns of social behavior. Individual preferences and requirements for heterogeneous resources can lead to differences in where behaviors take place and which kinds of individuals interact. In this study we examined whether properties of habitat patches predict presence of and interactions among wild forked fungus beetles (Bolitotherus cornutus). B. cornutus use shelf-like fruiting bodies of wood decaying fungi (brackets) as social arenas, courtship and mating sites, oviposition locations, and food sources. Brackets on a single log vary in size and condition and represent a dynamic resource as individual brackets decay over the years that they persist on a subpopulation. We found that size and condition significantly predicted how a bracket was used by B. cornutus. Both males and females were found more often on larger, living brackets. Larger brackets hosted proportionally more social interactions and mating behaviors relative to the overall visitation by individuals. The relationship between these resource properties and frequencies of behaviors was stronger for reproductive, between-sex social interactions. Live brackets also attracted more oviposition events by females, but bracket size had no effect on this behavior. Our results indicate that the dynamics of growth and aging of a critical resource can impact how social and reproductive behaviors are distributed in time and space, which in turn could affect the social structure of subpopulations
Modeling Fertilization Outcome In A Changing World
Marine organisms have complex life histories. For broadcast spawners, successful continuation of the population requires their small gametes to make contact in the water column for sufficiently long periods for fertilization to occur. Anthropogenic climate change has been shown to impact fertilization success in various marine invertebrates, including sea urchins, which are key grazers in their habitats. Gamete performance of both sexes declined when exposed to elevated temperatures and/or pCO₂ levels. Examples of reduced performance included slower sperm swimming speed and thinning egg jelly coat. However, such responses to climate change stress were not uniform between individuals. Such variations could serve as the basis for selection. Fertilization kinetics have long been modeled as a particle collision process. Here, we present a modified fertilization kinetics model that incorporates individual variations in performance in a more environmentally relevant regime, and which the performance of groups with different traits can be separately tracked in a mixture. Numerical simulations highlight that fertilization outcomes are influenced by changes in gamete traits as they age in sea water and the presence of competition groups (multiple dams or sires). These results highlight the importance of considering multiple individuals and at multiple time points during in vivo assays. We also applied our model to show that interspecific variation in climate stress vulnerabilities elevates the risk of hybridization. By making a numerical model open-source, we aim to help us better understand the fate of organisms in the face of climate change by enabling the community to consider the mean and variance of the response to capture adaptive potential
