Design of a Square Deployable Truss Mast
Growing interest in small satellites poses a significant challenge in working with limited cargo volumes. This restriction requires novel stowage methods for onboard satellite components. A solution to this challenge has been deployable structures, which address the need for compactness during stowage. The main design parameter for these structures is the folding ratio, which quantifies the compactness of a structure. This work presents a design methodology for a square deployable truss mast (DTM). The mast is designed to fit inside a cylindrical cannister with a diameter of 90 mm and a height of 55 mm (according to standard volumetric payloads for small satellites). The result is a DTM with a folding ratio of 12.64. This work presents the mathematical modeling and computer-aided design (CAD) for the folding mechanism of the square DTM. Future iterations of this design will incorporate diagonal cables that complete the truss-structure of the DTM
Battery Powered Rice Cooker
A small low power rice cooker was modified so that its power source came from an external power supply. This allowed the devicet to be remotely operated from a traditional wall socket. A long testing process was carried out to see in-depth information about the current, power, and voltage draw of the rice cooker over an entire cooking and “keep warm” cycle. From this data, the power draw was integrated to find the total energy consumption of the rice cooker and determined what size and type of battery was needed to be purchase. With both the rice cooker and battery acquired, a housing model was drafted on Fusion360 that could hold both the rice cooker and battery together. This was then manufactured using woodshop tools to make the final rice cooker and battery housing prototype
From “Defilement” to “Modernity”: How Japan\u27s Encounter with the West Brought Beef to the Table
The long Tokugawa – Meiji transition (1850s – 1880s) is arguably one of the most profound socio-economic transitions that Japan underwent in its history. This paper uses beef consumption in Japan as a lens to further investigate the players involved in this transition. Historically more eschewed than other types of meat and tightly associated with the notion of the “other,” beef became an embodiment of progress and modernity during the Meiji Period. Through tracing the historical shift in the Japanese perception of beef, this paper argues that the evolution of beef consumption corresponds to the radically shifting attitudes of the Japanese towards the West.
To address the current research gap in the reception and integration of beef into Japanese cuisine, this paper starts the investigation from the late Tokugawa period. The early story of a “beef culture” reflects that a large part of Japan\u27s modernization efforts was initiated by pioneering merchants and curious individuals in the late Tokugawa treaty ports. The paper also examines the diverse reactions of common Japanese toward beef, an essential part of the larger “westernization” campaign during the early Meiji period. Through popular folk literature and artworks, journals from western visitors, and an array of sources on Japanese food market, this paper illustrates that as Japan encountered Western culture in the nineteenth century, her people simultaneously resisted and adapted to it, creating a unique blend of tradition and modernity that was embodied in dishes like gyūnabe (beef stew)
Large Sample Statistical Study of Three-Dimensional Magnetic Reconnection at the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment
Many plasmas can be described by ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). A key result of ideal MHD is the frozen-in-flux theorem which states that the magnetic field stretches and bends with the motion of the plasma. The frozen-in-flux theorem is violated during magnetic reconnection, the annihilation of magnetic flux within a plasma. During reconnection, non-ideal MHD effects dominate plasma dynamics. The dynamics of magnetic reconnection is an unsolved problem in plasma physics. Most prior laboratory studies of magnetic reconnection examined reconnection in 2D scenarios, scenarios with a single ignorable coordinate. The SSX device was used to merge twisted ropes of plasma called Taylor states which undergo 3D magnetic reconnection, reconnection without an ignorable coordinate, as they collide. The merging occurs in an unconfined volume at the center of SSX. The experiment measured the line averaged electron density and ion temperature along two different chords in the SSX midplane and measured the magnetic field on a grid of 16 coplanar positions in the merging region. We recorded data on 604 instances of Taylor state merging. The merging of Taylor states involves oscillations in density, magnetic energy, and ion temperature. Each quantity attains multiple significant peaks during each shot. The geometry of the current density in the merging region varies over the course of each shot. We calculated 11 summary statistics for each shot including the average and peak density, ion temperature, and magnetic energy and report their distributions. Neither average or peak magnetic energy is correlated with average or peak ion temperature despite ion heating being a known consequence of magnetic reconnection. The merging of Taylor states is much more complex and dynamic than two-dimensional magnetic reconnection

Flushed with Challenges: A Case Study into Sanitation Service Delivery in a Cape Town Informal Settlement
In South Africa, basic sanitation is considered a human right. Moreover, effective sanitation service delivery is fundamental in the ongoing transition to build sustainable cities and communities. An area of particular interest for city planners and government officials are informal settlements, which are often characterized by high vulnerabilities, large population densities, limited resources, and minimal state engagement. Due to their location and informal nature, these areas often lack sewage and drainage systems needed for effective sanitation. Unfortunately, communities that are most impacted by poor sanitation quality and service delivery are rarely consulted during the decision-making process for urban upgrades. This study aims to address this gap by following a process that engages communities in decision-making around a new project on alternative sanitation implementation. The research comes at the beginning of a larger project to understand the current situation. It focuses on the community’s perception of factors hindering effective sanitation service delivery in the present and future through the case study of Rasta Camp, an informal settlement located in Ocean View, Cape Town. This study highlights insights from three factors impacting sanitation service delivery: technology developments, community and municipal governance, and climate variability. First, alternative sanitation delivery focuses on the advancement of technology to adapt and improve sanitation infrastructure. However, the implementation of this technology must be evaluated within the context of social, cultural, environmental, economic, and political contexts. Second, effective sanitation service delivery requires social acceptability, which is strengthened by building trust and holding stakeholders accountable on both a community and municipal level. Arrangements between community liaisons and local ward councilors are critical to ensure that effective funding, communication, and collaboration occurs. Lastly, climate variability has and will continue to disrupt and exacerbate the issues in the settlement and associated sanitation service delivery. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to take proactive measures to understand climate impacts and develop stronger adaptation measures for sanitation
Apollonian Packings And Kac-Moody Root Systems
We study Apollonian circle packings using the properties of a certain rank 4 indefinite Kac-Moody root system ϕ. We introduce the generating function Z(s) of a packing, an exponential series in four variables with an Apollonian symmetry group, which is a symmetric function for ϕ. By exploiting the presence of affine and Lorentzian hyperbolic root subsystems of ϕ, with automorphic Weyl denominators, we express Z(s) in terms of Jacobi theta functions and the Siegel modular form Δ₅. We also show that the domain of convergence of Z(s) is the Tits cone of ϕ, and discover that this domain inherits the intricate geometric structure of Apollonian packings
Slicing Knots In Definite 4-Manifolds
We study the ℂℙ²-slicing number of knots, i.e. the smallest ≥ 0 such that a knot ⊆ ³ bounds a properly embedded, null-homologous disk in a punctured connected sum (#ℂℙ²)⨉. We find knots for which the smooth and topological ℂℙ²-slicing numbers are both finite, nonzero, and distinct. To do this, we give a lower bound on the smooth ℂℙ²-slicing number of a knot in terms of its double branched cover and an upper bound on the topological ℂℙ²-slicing number in terms of the Seifert form
Reframing Perceptions of Signares in French Colonial Senegal
Fifteenth to nineteenth-century French Colonial Senegal was a period of unprecedented cultural contact and convergence in Western Africa. With these interactions came new social hierarchies and the emergence of the signare identity. Signares were wealthy mixed-race and African Women who became involved with French men. This paper examines nineteenth-century art by Frenchman David Boilat and Stanislas Darondeau, and the eighteenth-century house of signare Anne Pepin. It critiques the racism and sexism depicted within Boilat and Darondeau’s work as well as its misinterpretations by contemporary scholars Mark Hinchman and George E. Brooks. Signares were knowledgeable entrepreneurs rather than manipulative and seductive women, which I argue with the support of contemporary scholars Marylee Crofts and Hilary Jones’ work. As I complicate existing research and develop an alternative narrative, I urge readers to question the diverse narratives about these African and mixed-race women in French Colonial Senegal
