Socio-demographic and attitudinal factors influencing household fruit and vegetable purchasing frequency in Eastern Türkiye
Abstract Background This study examines the relationship between households’ fruit and vegetable purchasing frequency and their socio-demographic characteristics and attitudes, with a focus on Eastern Türkiye’s Van province, a region underrepresented in existing literature. Objective To explore how socio-demographic and attitudinal factors influence the frequency of household fruit and vegetable purchases. Methods Methodologically, the research employs a Chi-square test of independence to compare households’ fruit and vegetable purchasing frequencies across four categories: never, twice a month, once a week, and more than once a week. To further analyze the determinants of purchasing frequency, an ordered probit model was utilized. This econometric approach was applied to obtain coefficients used in calculating marginal effects and probabilities. Results The empirical results reveal significant influences of various household characteristics on fruit and vegetable purchasing frequency. Household income, fruit and vegetable expenditure, employment and insurance status of the household head, perception of sufficient fruit and vegetable consumption within the household, and fruit and vegetable consumption by children in the household were found to positively affect the frequency of household fruit and vegetable purchases. Conversely, the age of the household head was found to negatively impact the frequency of fruit and vegetable purchases. Given the behavioral elements involved in food purchasing, this study also incorporates attitudinal and perceptual factors that may reflect bounded rationality beyond classical utility theory. Conclusion This research contributes to both public health and behavioral economics literature by integrating sociodemographic and psychological variables into the analysis of purchasing behavior. The findings suggest that multifaceted approaches may be necessary to effectively increase fruit and vegetable consumption, including economic interventions, educational programs, and targeted interventions for specific demographic groups such as older adults. The results also offer empirical support for developing regionally tailored strategies in under-studied areas like Van. Eriophyoid mites (Acari: Eriophyoidea) on weed plants in vegetable growing areas in Van Lake Basin Region of Turkey
The main goal of this study is to determine Eriophyoid (Acarina: Eriophyidae) mite fauna on weeds plants in vegetable growing areas of Van Lake Basin of Turkey during 2018–2020 years. The identified eriophyoid mites collected on different weed plants mainly from; Agropyron repens L. (Poaceae), Amaranthus sp. (Amarantaceae), Bromus sp. (Poaceae), Centaurea depressa Bieb. (Asteraceae), Cirsium arvense L. (Asteraceae), Crupina sp. L. (Asteraceae), Euphorbia sp. (Euphorbiaceae), Salvia sp. L (Lamiaceae) and Trigonella sp. (Fabaceae). The identified species; Abacarus hystrix (Nalepa, 1896), Abacarus longilobus (Skorocka, 2002), Aceria acroptiloni (Shevtchenko and Kuvalev, 1974), Aceria amaranthi (Abou–Awad & El– Banhawy, 1992), Aceria anthocoptes (Nalepa,1892), Aceria balasi (Farkas, 1960), Aceria salviae (Nalepa, 1891), Aceria tinctoriae (Denizhan et al., 2006), Aceria tosichella (Keifer, 1969), Aculops montenegrinus (Petanovic and De Lillo, 1992), Anthocoptes aspidophorus (Nalepa, 1893) and Eriophyes euphorbiae (Nalepa, 1891). </p
Mediating role of psychological well-being in the effect of spirituality on attitudes toward death in the elderly
Background: Spirituality and psychological well-being are important in shaping attitudes toward death. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the mediating role of psychological well-being in the effect of spirituality on attitudes toward death in the elderly. Method: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in a province of Turkey between February 2024 and June 2024 with 467 individuals aged 65 years and older. The variables affecting attitudes toward death were identified by conducting mediation analysis and predictive analysis with a machine learning approach. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0, G*Power 3.1, R programming language 4.1.3 programs. Results: In our study, the effect of spirituality on psychological well-being was found to be positive and statistically significant (coefficient = 0.660, P < 0.001). The direct effect of spirituality on neutrality and approaching acceptance, sub-dimensions of attitude toward death, was significant (coefficient = 1.603, P < 0.001), and its indirect effect through psychological well-being was also significant (coefficient = 0.179, lower limit confidence interval (LLCI) = 0.085, upper limit CI (ULCI) = 0.309). The direct effect of spirituality on escape acceptance (coefficient = 0.571, P < 0.001), one of the attitudes toward death sub-dimensions, was significant, but the mediation effect of psychological well-being was not significant (LLCI = −0.049, ULCI = 0.0438). The direct effect of spirituality on fear and avoidance of death, one of the attitudes toward death sub-dimensions, was not statistically significant at the 95% confidence level (coefficient = 0.094, P = 0.433). The indirect effect of psychological well-being on fear and avoidance of death was negative and significant (coefficient = −0.136, LLCI = −0.233, ULCI = −0.031). Conclusion: In this study, as spirituality increases, attitudes toward death also increase positively. It was found that as spirituality increases, people tend to have a more positive acceptance and approach toward death. This study suggests that spirituality may influence emotional responses to death and shape attitudes toward death, particularly neutral acceptance and escape acceptance. As psychological well-being increases in the elderly, acceptance of death increases and fear of death decreases. In the study, prediction with different machine learning approaches is proposed. Longitudinal studies on attitudes toward death are recommended

Türkiye’s Competitive Power in the World Fig Marketand Comparison with Selected EuropeanUnionCountries
Fig can be produced in a few countries in the world, especially Türkiye, due to its climate and ecological demands. Türkiye realizes 28.2% of the world’s fig production amount and 48.8% of the world’s fig export amount. Therefore, fig is a very important product for Turkish agriculture and economy. The aim of this research is to determine Türkiye’s competitiveness in international fig trade and to compare its competitiveness with Spain, Greece, Italy, France and Portugal, which are important fig producers in the European Union. In the research, the competitiveness of the countries was calculated for the period 2004–2023 using the Export Share Market (ESM), Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), and Trade Balance Index (TBI). In the research, Türkiye’s average ESM, RCA and TBI index results for 2004–2023 were determined as 51.02%, 60.58 and 0.95, respectively. These results show that Türkiye has a strong comparative advantage in fig exports and is a net exporter in international fig trade. The average RCA results of EU members Spain, Greece, Italy, France and Portugal for 2004–2023 are 1.81, 14.45, 0.59, 0.67 and 0.37, respectively. According to these results, Spain and Greece have a comparative advantage in fig exports. According to the TBI index results, Greece and Spain are net exporters in international fig trade, while Italy, France and Portugal are net importers. In order for Türkiye to increase and maintain its competitiveness in international fig markets, it is necessary to increase yield and quality in production, concentrate on high-value-added fig products (such as organic or processed figs) in exports, and diversify the market</p
Finite and Infinite Dimensional Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space Approach for Bagley–Torvik Equation
In this paper, two different numerical approaches are presented in finite dimensional and infinite dimensional reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces for the fractional order Bagley–Torvik equation with boundary conditions. The reproducing kernel functions are obtained in finite dimensional Hilbert space Πn ρ [0, A] using Legendre polynomials, while they are obtained by a known classical method in infinite dimensional Sobolev-Hilbert space W 3 2 [0, A]. A comprehensive theoretical analysis is given for both approaches, which have different forms of reproducing kernel methods. Numerical results are calculated over wide intervals with both proposed approaches. In order to compare the efficiency of these proposed methods, the numerical results obtained for the considered six examples are presented through tabulated data and graphical representations.</p
Advancing Hybrid Fiber-Reinforced Concrete: Performance, Crack Resistance Mechanism, and Future Innovations
This research investigates the effects of steel (ST) and synthetic (SYN) fibers on the workability and mechanical properties of HPFRC. It also analyzes their influence on the material’s microstructural characteristics. ST fibers improve tensile strength, fracture toughness, and post-cracking performance owing to their rigidity, mechanical interlocking, and robust adhesion with the matrix. SYN fibers, conversely, mitigate shrinkage-induced micro-cracking, augment ductility, and enhance concrete performance under dynamic stress while exerting negative effects on workability. Hybrid fiber systems, which include ST and SYN fibers, offer synergistic advantages by enhancing fracture management at various scales and augmenting ductility and energy absorption capability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been crucial in investigating fiber–matrix interactions, elucidating the effects of ST and SYN fibers on hydration, crack-bridging mechanisms, and interfacial bonding. ST fibers establish thick interfacial zones that facilitate effective stress transfer, whereas SYN fibers reduce micro-crack formation and enhance long-term durability. Nonetheless, research deficiencies persist, encompassing optimal hybrid fiber configurations, the enduring performance of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC), and sustainable fiber substitutes. Future investigations should examine multi-scale reinforcing techniques, intelligent fibers for structural health assessment, and sustainable fiber alternatives. The standardization of testing methodologies and cost–benefit analyses is essential to promote industrial deployment. This review offers a thorough synthesis of the existing knowledge, emphasizing advancements and potential to enhance HPFRC for high-performance and sustainable construction applications. The findings facilitate the development of new, durable, and resilient fiber-reinforced concrete systems by solving current difficulties.</jats:p
