The buying and selling of identity in the 2024 presidential debate: A cultural politics approach to media and hegemony
Background: This article discusses the attempt to establish hegemony in the 2024 presidential election through the presidential candidate debates. The presidential election is an important event in the transition of government in a democratic country. Presidential candidate debates are often seen merely as a campaign stage, but few view them as a medium for establishing hegemony, or as a marketplace where the identity products of presidential candidates are traded for voter loyalty. This study aims to explain how hegemony is established through the 2024 presidential candidate debates and how the identities of each candidate pair are traded for voter loyalty. Methods: This research was conducted by applying the theoretical framework of the “market for loyalties” as a method of analyzing the buying and selling of political products through the media. This study employs qualitative critical discourse analysis using the “market for loyalties” framework with data from debates, regulations, media, and campaign materials to examine identity construction and hegemony. Findings: This article indicate that hegemony is established through the ideologies and narratives brought by each candidate pair and their coalitions. The government plays a role in limiting the public's perspective on ideologies to only three presidential candidate pairs through presidential debates broadcast via mass media and digital media. These ideologies are reflected in the identities of each candidate pair; candidate pair 01 represents religious identity and change; 02 represents youth identity, loyalty to Jokowi, and continuity; 03 represents the identity of the PDIP (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan) as the ruling party and incumbent. Conclusion: This study concludes that the 2024 presidential candidate debates function as a medium for constructing hegemony through the articulation of ideologies and identities exchanged for voter loyalty. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article lies in applying the “market for loyalties” framework to analyze presidential debates as arenas of hegemony formation rather than merely campaign platforms
RFN–FWI research 2021: The impact of land cover and climate change on food sovereignty
Background: Small-island food systems are tightly coupled to forests, coastal waters, and customary tenure. In the Aru Islands (Maluku, Indonesia), rapid land-cover change and a warming, more variable climate may erode sago-based subsistence and marine protein supplies, undermining food sovereignty. Methods: This study integrates geospatial and social approaches: one-class SVM mapped sago (10-m) from multispectral, radar, terrain, and rainfall predictors, ecological niche modeling (MaxEnt) estimated seasonal fishing grounds from oceanographic drivers, an accessibility (travel-time) model quantified community access to sago, land cover was classified (Random Forest) and projected to 2050 with the PLUS model, statistically downscaled CMIP6 GCMs (SSP2/SSP5) provided 2050 climate anomalies, and a Rapid Rural Appraisal in Desa Lorang documented food practices and gendered roles. Findings: Current sago covers ~14,344.82 ha, concentrated in Aru Selatan Timur, Aru Selatan, and Aru Tengah; access ranges from ~15 minutes to ~9 hours, yielding 95 surplus and 7 deficit villages for sago. Fishing potential peaks May–October; models achieved AUC ≈0.82. Since 2015, agriculture has contracted and forest loss/degradation accelerated; business-as-usual projections indicate natural forest may fall to ~31% of Aru by 2050, with built-up land expanding and sago shrinking to ~3,025 ha. Climate projections show +0.7–1.4 °C warming and slight mean rainfall decline (≈−85 mm yr⁻¹), especially in western Aru. Conclusion: Forest conservation, tenure recognition, education/health access, and policies valuing sago and diversified local foods are essential to safeguard Aru’s food sovereignty under climate and land-use pressures. Novelty/Originality of this article: Provides the first island-scale, integrative quantification linking machine-learning sago mapping, seasonal fisheries, accessibility, land-cover trajectories, climate risk, and gendered social dynamics to food sovereignty in a small-island context
The effectiveness of waste management policy governance in Indonesia: Between national targets and local achievements
Background: The problem of waste management in Indonesia is still a serious challenge in realizing sustainable development. Although the government has set the Indonesia Clean Waste 2025 target target through Presidential Regulation No. 97 of 2017 concerning the National Policy and Strategy on Household and Similar Household Waste Management (Jakstranas), the implementation achievements at the regional level have not shown optimal results. Methods: This article uses a descriptive qualitative approach with content and interpretive analysis of secondary data from policy documents, performance reports, and academic publications for the 2019–2024 period. The analytical framework integrates the policy implementation effectiveness model of George C. Edwards III (1980) and the Collaborative Governance model of Ansell and Gash (2007). Findings: The results of the analysis show that the effectiveness of the implementation of waste management policies in Indonesia is still low to moderate. The main obstacles include non-participatory policy communication, limited regional resources and funding, weak inter-agency coordination, and low participation of the community and the private sector. However, some areas, such as Surabaya and Bekasi, have shown relatively successful collaborative practices in encouraging public participation and local innovation. Conclusion: The effectiveness of the implementation of waste management policies in Indonesia cannot be said to be effective, either in achieving national targets or in their implementation at the local level. Facilitative leadership, inclusive institutional design, and transparent policy communication are needed so that national and equitable targets can be implemented at the local level. Another thing is that the governance of waste management policies is highly dependent on the power of multi-level collaboration between the central government, local governments, the private sector, and the community. Novelty/originality of this article: This article offers the integration of two governance models—Edwards III and Ansell & Gash—in analyzing the effectiveness of environmental policy implementation in Indonesia and providing practical lessons from Singapore's experience to strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration in waste management
Distributed outreach for literacy and access: Efforts to bridge accessibility, availability, and awareness of quality education for underprivileged groups to support local empowering and community development
Background: Unequal access to quality education for underprivileged groups in Indonesia remains a critical issue, perpetuating cycles of poverty. Marginalized groups face significant challenges, including stigma, economic and geographic disparities, which hinder their access to education and literacy. Method: This study employs a qualitative approach, using secondary data from journals, articles, and existing surveys to explore the challenges marginalized groups face in accessing education. Findings: The analysis reveals that while economic and geographic barriers are prominent, a lack of government focus on local empowerment exacerbates the problem. The existing approaches do not sufficiently address the root causes or involve marginalized communities in meaningful ways. Conclusion: The study suggests that a more inclusive approach is needed, such as the DORA (Distributed Outreach for liteRacy and Access) program. DORA aims to promote widely distributed education, enhance literacy awareness, and foster local empowerment and development within marginalized communities. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This study introduces the DORA program as an innovative solution to the persistent educational challenges faced by marginalized groups. By emphasizing local empowerment and widespread literacy efforts, it offers a fresh perspective on addressing educational inequality in Indonesia
Facing climate change and potential disaster: Lessons from Jakarta slums and the impact of modern-day individualism
Background: Jakarta faces significant climate change risks due to rapid urbanization and insufficient infrastructure. These challenges are compounded by increasing population pressures and environmental degradation, especially in urban slums. Leveraging social capital, particularly community cooperation, can enhance resilience to climate-related impacts by promoting collective action and resource mobilization. Method: This study employed a dual-phase strategy, starting with an extensive literature review to understand the context and theoretical frameworks. It also utilized comparative analysis and systems thinking to assess the roles of social capital and community resilience in mitigating climate risks. The research incorporated a variety of credible sources and opposing viewpoints for a balanced approach. Findings: The study highlights the importance of social capital, particularly the collectivist culture of mutual cooperation (gotong royong) in Jakarta, which aids in overcoming resource limitations and fosters community cooperation. This social capital is crucial for enhancing resilience, particularly in slum and disaster-prone areas. However, urban planning issues and rising individualism present challenges to fully harnessing these resources. Conclusion: Integrating the communal practices and cultural values of gotong royong into urban planning, along with promoting social engagement, is essential for building a climate-resilient city in Jakarta. Strengthening social networks and addressing governance and infrastructure issues are key steps toward mitigating climate change impacts. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a unique perspective on the role of social capital in climate resilience, specifically in Jakarta's slums, and highlights the importance of integrating cultural practices like gotong royong into urban planning to build a more resilient city. It combines insights from environmental science, sociology, and psychology to develop a comprehensive approach to climate adaptation
Effectiveness of water extract of mangrove fruit flour (Rhizophora mucronata) as a natural preservative in skipjack fish fillets (Katsuwonus pelamis)
Background: Gorontalo is quite potential for the development of capture fisheries potential including the development of skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) production. In its processing, natural additives containing antimicrobial compounds are needed to preserve the fish. Rhizophora mucronata or R. mucronata is one type of mangrove that is widely spread along the tourist location "Tracking Mangrove" Langge Village, North Gorontalo Regency. This study aims to analyze the effect of length of storage of skipjack on organoleptic quality soaked using mangrove fruit water extract and analyze the effect of length of storage of skipjack on the quality of TPC and pH soaked using mangrove fruit water extract. Methods: This study uses a laboratory experimental method with 1 treatment, namely the length of soaking with 3 levels of treatment and 2 replicates, namely P1 (10-hour soaking), P2 (12-hour soaking), and P3 (14-hour soaking). The parameters tested were organoleptic, pH, and TPC. The research data were analyzed using a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with One-way ANOVA test with a significance level of 5% and further tested using Duncan. Finding: The results of the analysis showed that the best soaking time of skipjack in the solution mangrove fruit extract R. mucronata was found in P1 (soaking time of 10 hours) with indicators meat incision slightly less brilliant and strong meat tissue; fresh odor and specific type less; and texture slightly soft and slightly less elastic. The TPC value of skipjack meat slices can be maintained up to 10 hours of immersion in the solution of mangrove fruit extract Rhizopora mucronate with pH being acidic. Conclusion: The study concludes that the optimal soaking time for skipjack in Rhizophora mucronata fruit extract solution is 10 hours, as it maintains acceptable organoleptic quality, a fresh odor, and a firm texture while effectively inhibiting bacterial growth. The TPC value remains stable up to 10 hours of soaking, with an acidic pH indicating preservation effectiveness. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research introduces the use of Rhizophora mucronata fruit extract as a natural preservative for skipjack, highlighting its antimicrobial properties and potential for extending fish shelf life. The findings provide new insights into sustainable fish preservation methods using natural additives, contributing to the development of eco-friendly post-harvest technologies in fisheries
Enhancing farmers' land productivity through sustainable palm oil certification: Strategies for promoting environmental and economic benefits in agricultural practices
Background: With more than 40% of Indonesia's oil palm land under its management, smallholders still face challenges on the low land productivity and certification achievement. Methods: This research aims to develop a certification concept capable to increase the smallholders’ land productivity through descriptive statistics, grounded theory, content analysis, and Analytic Hiearachy Process. Findings: This research finds that ISPO and RSPO certified smallholders achieved 82% higher land productivity than the average conventional ones, in line with their compliance with certification and consistent GAP application. Fertilisation needs to be prioritised to increase productivity, with the GAP Application and Monitoring (RSPO) and Plant Maintenance (ISPO) as the supporting certification criteria. Conclusion: Synergy between ISPO and RSPO has a chance to increasing land productivity through certification compliance, hence accelerating smallholder certification achievement which would reduce deforestation rates from oil palm expansion. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study introduces a certification concept that combines ISPO and RSPO standards to enhance smallholder land productivity. It emphasizes the integration of fertilization, GAP application, and plant maintenance as key components for boosting productivity while ensuring certification compliance, offering a novel approach to reducing deforestation rates in Indonesia's oil palm sector
Assessing the vulnerability of urban areas to the urban heat island phenomenon: Strategies for effective mitigation and sustainable urban planning
Background: Urban Heat Island (UHI) is a phenomenon that causes significant temperature differences between urban areas and surrounding suburban or rural areas. This phenomenon can be found even in medium to small-sized cities and is measured based on the temperature difference between urban and rural areas. Methods: This study employs a systematic literature review to analyze research on urban heat islands and applied mitigation strategies. The review follows a structured process, including selection criteria based on albedo, vegetation area, and anthropogenic factors, to identify and classify relevant case studies. The analysis focuses on three mitigation approaches: reducing urban albedo, increasing vegetation, and reducing anthropogenic heat emissions. Findings: In cities, urban heat islands are influenced by factors such as building density, the nature of roads and building surface materials that store heat, lack of green land, and activities carried out in urban areas. With high activity and population density, urban heat islands can cause temperature increases both locally and globally. The increase in temperature in the microclimate in urban areas triggers an increase in death rates due to heat waves, causes discomfort in human activities, and greatly impacts vulnerable groups. This phenomenon will become increasingly widespread due to urbanization which results in urban sprawl which expands urban areas. Conclusion: Urban vulnerability to urban heat islands requires interdisciplinary studies to analyse and develop effective mitigation. The mitigation carried out aims to reduce the negative impact of the urban heat island phenomenon. Novelty/Originality of this article: Three mitigation solutions that can be implemented are reducing urban albedo because albedo can reflect solar radiation, increasing urban vegetation to reduce heat in the surrounding area, and reducing anthropogenic heat emissions by reducing heat emissions from daily activities
RETRACTED: Yield and physical pulp properties of three Eucalyptus Pellita F. Muell clones at two active alkali concentrations: A study in tropical agriculture practices
Background: Efforts to enhance the genetic quality of Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell by PT. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper included breeding several clones to optimize raw materials for pulp and paper production. Three clones—CEP06, CEP13, and CGP32—were selected to determine their potential based on pulp yield and physical properties. Methods: The wood samples from these clones were cooked using the sulfate process with active alkali concentrations of 13% and 15%, 25% sulfidity, a wood-to-liquor ratio of 1:4, a cooking temperature of 170°C, and a cooking duration of 2 hours. Pulp yields, kappa numbers, and pulp properties, including tear, burst, and tensile indices, were analyzed. Statistical analysis employed Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) tests. Findings: The clones CEP13 and CGP32 achieved higher screened yields at 38.34% and 38.26%, respectively, compared to CEP06. However, CEP06 demonstrated superior tear and burst indices of 6.36 mN·m²/g and 3.60 kPa·m²/g, respectively. The highest tensile index of 41.75 Nm/g was observed in the CGP32 clone. Significant differences were found among the clones in terms of screened yield, kappa number, and certain pulp properties. Additionally, active alkali concentrations significantly affected the screened yield and kappa number, with interactions between clones and alkali concentrations significantly influencing kappa numbers. Conclusion: The CEP06 clone is recommended for pulp and paper production due to its favorable pulp properties, making it an excellent raw material candidate. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study highlights the potential of Eucalyptus pellita clones in optimizing raw materials for pulp and paper industries, emphasizing their specific advantages and contributions to sustainable forestry practices
Bridging the socioeconomic divide: Unveiling the impact of energy transition on communities
Background: This study focuses on Indonesia’s energy transition, a shift from non-renewable to renewable energy sources aimed at reducing environmental impacts and promoting socioeconomic benefits. The transition’s effect on energy consumption, employment, and public support is analyzed, with particular attention to challenges in remote areas. Method: This study uses a qualitative approach with Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to analyze the energy transition in Indonesia based on 24 journals and government regulations. The analysis was conducted using the Driving Forces – Pressures – State – Impacts – Responses (DPSIR) framework, which links social, economic, and environmental factors to provide impacts and responses to the energy transition. Findings: The energy transition has significant socioeconomic impacts, such as increased public awareness of renewable energy's importance. Notable changes include rising energy consumption in industrial and construction sectors, job creation with around 400,000 new opportunities in renewable energy, and growing interest in electric vehicles and rooftop solar panels. However, challenges related to cost, infrastructure, and technology reliability remain. Public support for energy transition initiatives exceeds 80%. Conclusion: Achieving a successful energy transition requires collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, addressing both the opportunities and challenges to ensure sustainable energy resources and positive socioeconomic outcomes. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the effects of energy transition on socioeconomic conditions, highlighting the increasing public support for renewable energy and its impact on job creation, energy consumption, and behavioral changes, which have not been extensively explored in existing literature
