    Spatiotemporal dynamics and environmental risk factors in the spread of COVID-19 within urban slum settlements

    Background: This study examines the spatial-temporal dynamics and environmental risk factors that influence COVID-19 transmission in urban slums. Although the pandemic has had widespread social, economic, and environmental impacts throughout Indonesia, its effects have been particularly severe in slum communities, where residents face structural vulnerabilities such as high population density, poor sanitation, and limited access to health services. Methods: This study is based on a comprehensive review of accredited international and national journal publications. By synthesizing multidisciplinary evidence, the study identifies key factors driving infection patterns in urban slums, particularly those related to environmental conditions, population density, mobility, and socioeconomic inequality. The analysis also highlights the role of geospatial approaches in mapping transmission clusters and tracking temporal shifts in COVID-19 spread. Findings: The review shows that the geospatial and temporal patterns of COVID-19 transmission in slums are strongly influenced by environmental risks—such as inadequate housing ventilation, poor waste management, and limited access to clean water—combined with highly dense living conditions. These factors collectively increase the rate of transmission and create persistent disease hotspots. These findings also emphasize that targeted interventions, spatially informed policies, and community-centered strategies are essential for effectively reducing infection risk and strengthening local resilience. Conclusion: Future research should explore the application of geospatial methodologies to assess the complex interactions between environmental vulnerability and disease transmission in slum settings. These insights are essential for designing context-sensitive interventions to promote community health resilience and inclusive urban development. Strengthening spatial evidence and integrating it into policy frameworks can help protect vulnerable populations and build healthier, more equitable urban environments.     Changes in the quality of kombucha during fermentation: A study of microbial, physicochemical and sensory attributes

    Background: Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage known for its health-promoting properties, largely due to its antioxidant-rich polyphenolic compounds. This study aims to examine how fermentation influences the microbial, physicochemical and sensory qualities of kombucha, focusing on microbial growth, polyphenols, total acids, total solids, and sensory attributes. Methods: A literature review approach was employed to synthesize findings from relevant studies on kombucha fermentation and its biochemical mechanisms. Findings: Results show that extended fermentation reduces microbial growth through the antimicrobial activity of phenolic compounds, increases polyphenol and organic acid content via biotransformation. Total solids decline over time due to the conversion of components into volatile metabolites, while acidity, sour aroma, and color brightness intensify with longer fermentation. Conclusion: These findings highlight fermentation duration as a critical factor shaping kombucha’s functional properties and consumer acceptability.     Evaluating mangrove vegetation structure and community participation for integrated conservation management

    Background: Mangrove ecosystem in Pulau Seribu is one of the conservation areas in Pulau Seribu National Park. Its existence is very important in maintaining the ecological integrity of Pulau Seribu. Changes in land cover and open space area are decreasing, thus affecting global warming, supporting sea level rise, and damaging mangrove ecosystems. This research is to analyze the condition of mangrove ecosystems, socio-economic conditions of the community, and efforts to optimize mangrove ecosystem conservation areas on Pramuka Island. Methods: The method used for primary data was the line plot method and measurement of supporting parameters, while secondary data were obtained from literature studies. Findings: The results showed that there were three types of mangroves found on Pramuka Island, with seedling and sapling growth levels having the same Importance Value Index of 200. While the pole level obtained the highest Rhizophora stylosa (267.74) then Rhizophora apiculata (16.39) and the lowest by Rhizophora mucronata (15.87). Conclusion: Based on the findings of the real conditions on Pramuka Island, it is necessary to repair and improve supporting facilities in the conservation area. The level of community participation on Pramuka Island is very low in mangrove management, with the highest average of 38.15% in the 'Never' answer category. Community-based conservation programs to actively engage in mangrove ecosystem restoration and management. Novelty/Originality of this article: Promotion of sustainable alternatives to destructive practices such as mini-tourism, ecotourism, and research/study can help reduce pressure on mangrove ecosystems. Areas covered by mangroves need to be promoted through a zoning system, such as maintenance zone, utilization zone, protection zone, and replantation zone

    Community-based innovation in mangrove restoration: Transforming marine debris into a medium for ecological and socioeconomic resilience

    Background: Mangrove ecosystems in urban coastal areas such as Muara Angke, North Jakarta, face severe ecological pressures due to the accumulation of marine debris, particularly plastic waste from domestic and industrial sources, which has caused ecosystem degradation and hindered natural regeneration. Methods: This study investigates a community-driven mangrove rehabilitation program initiated by the Muara Angke Mangrove Community/Komunitas Mangrove Muara Angke (KOMMA), highlighting an innovative technique that employs sedimented waste covered in mud as an alternative planting medium. Using a qualitative exploratory case study design, the research utilises secondary data from community archives, biomass reports, economic records, and educational activities between 2014 and 2021. Findings: Results demonstrate a 100% seedling survival rate, with biomass rising from 0.25 tonnes in 2014 to 67.99 tonnes in 2020, while carbon sequestration reached 117.16 tonnes of CO₂. In addition, silvofishery initiatives and the production of mangrove-based goods such as syrup and dodol generated more than IDR 130 million for the community within three years. Beyond ecological recovery, the program promoted environmental awareness through the Mangrove Education House and reinforced community solidarity through collaborative governance. Conclusion: Innovations rooted in local limitations, when integrated with ecological, economic, and social aspects, can strengthen socio-ecological resilience in polluted coastal environments. Novelty/Originality of this article: The study highlights a unique community innovation that turns marine debris into a restoration medium, combining ecological rehabilitation with economic empowerment, and offers a replicable model for other coastal areas through community-based restoration and carbon incentive schemes

    Environmentally-conscious cities: Energy transformation through ecoregional planning and carbon trading for sustainable regional development

    Background: The global climate crisis and dependency on fossil fuels pose serious threats to food, water, and energy security in Indonesia, particularly in ecologically and economically strategic regions such as Garut Regency. This research proposes an integrated strategy for sustainable regional development based on ecoregional planning and carbon trading, addressing spatial inequality, environmental degradation, and clean energy transformation. Methods: Spatial-territorial analysis and participatory cross-sectoral policy review serve as the primary methodology, supplemented by stakeholder interviews and geospatial assessments.  Findings: The findings reveal significant renewable energy potential in Garut, including geothermal (PLTP Darajat), solar, micro-hydro, and biomass from agricultural waste. However, 52.57% land-use misalignment, a 42.46% decline in forest area, and water deficits in 19 sub-districts endanger ecosystem stability and local economic resilience. Strategic ecoregional planning, including environmental carrying capacity-based zoning, 45% protected area retention, and renewable energy integration into spatial plans, can reverse these negative trends. Implementation requires multi-sectoral collaboration involving government, private sector, and communities, supported by green technologies and innovative financing (APBD, KPBU, CSR). The environmental benefits encompass biodiversity conservation, enhanced climate resilience, and emission reductions toward the net-zero emissions 2045 target. Conclusion: This study concludes that Garut’s transformation into an energy-independent, socially equitable, and ecologically resilient region can serve as a national model for achieving the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this article lies in proposing an integrated ecoregional planning and carbon trading framework as a scalable model for aligning spatial planning, renewable energy development, and socio-political risk management in regional sustainability transitions

    From anthropocentrism to ecocentrism: The role of local wisdom and religious tradition in transforming environmental ethics

    Background: Bali is one of the islands in Indonesian archipelago that has the most beautiful tourist destinations and always gets visits from local and non-local tourists. The growth of Bali’s tourist destinations makes Bali must expand tourist areas such as hotels, restaurants, and areas that can increase the visits of local and non-local residents. As a result, Bali has occurred massive cover change to land use and some vegetation degradation that causes environmental damage. There is still an ethic of anthropocentrism in managing Bali’s environment. The ethics of ecocentrism have been applied in most Balinese communities but most also still adhere to the ethics of anthropocentrism, the need for ecocentrism ethics to be developed throughout of the community to manage the natural environment properly. Methods: This research uses a qualitative method, conducted by analyzing the problems that exist in Bali. Data collection uses literature study-based method that is related to environmental management from the point of view of ecocentrism in Bali. The analysis is carried out by providing description related to the perception of Balinese people in environmental management and culture values that can be used as guidelines in environmental management. Findings: Balinese people, especially Hindus, have practiced ecocentrism paradigm quite well towards the environment. Balinese Hindus apply Tri Hita Karana in managing and conserving the natural environment, especially water and forests. Preservation of the natural environment is one of the important things in Hinduism because it is one of their ritual parts. Conclusion: In managing the natural environment, especially water and forests, it cannot be separated from the local wisdom of Balinese Hindus culture, including tumpek wariga, tumpek uye and wana kertih. Therefore, it can be concluded that Balinese people have implemented ecocentrism ethics. Novelty/Originality of this Article: This study provides a cultural perspective on environmental ethics by emphasizing the integration of Balinese Hindu local wisdom, such as Tri Hita Karana, tumpek wariga, tumpek uye, and wana kertih, in practicing ecocentrism for sustainable environmental management

    The imperatives of social media entrepreneurship for employment generation and cybercrime reduction among youths in Nigeria

    Background: Social media have potentials for entrepreneurship, yet many young people misappropriate and abuse them to perpetrate cybercrime and other anti-social acts. Accordingly, this paper presents the outcome of an empirical research on the imperatives of social media entrepreneurship for employment generation and cybercrime reduction among youths in Nigeria. Methods: The objectives of the study were to examine the level of awareness of social media channels for entrepreneurship, the types of social media channels accessed for entrepreneurship, as well as the gratifications derived from social media channels among youths. The study was anchored on uses and gratifications theory. It adopted the descriptive survey research design, utilising the multi-stage sampling technique to select a sample size of 384 youths aged between 18 and 29 years. A questionnaire instrument designed by the researchers for data collection was deployed, while data were analysed using mean and standard deviation. Findings: On a 4-point Likert scale, the findings of the study revealed that some youths in Rivers State are barely aware of the potentials of social media for entrepreneurship. Among 384 respondents aged 18–29, 51% were aged 18–19; 78.9% agreed that social media increases sales and knowledge, 74.7% accessed Blogs, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for entrepreneurship, and a grand mean of 2.97 confirmed that social media use significantly improved youths’ livelihoods, market understanding, and wealth creation in Rivers State, Nigeria. Conclusion: Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that harnessing social media for entrepreneurship impacts positively on employment generation, poverty reduction, and leads to cybercrime reduction among youths, thus strengthening the attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 1, amongst others.     Corpse exposure and cosmological ecology: Ritual, space, and death in an indigenous mortuary landscape

    Background: This study explores the distinctive mepasah burial practice observed by the indigenous Trunyan community in Bali, Indonesia, in which deceased bodies are neither buried nor cremated, but instead placed openly on the ground beneath the sacred Taru Menyan tree. In contrast to the widely practiced ngaben cremation ritual of Balinese Hinduism, mepasah reflects a theo-eco-cosmological worldview in which death is regarded as a sacred process of returning the human body to the cosmic order. Methods: Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study draws upon participant observation, in-depth interviews with customary leaders, and analysis of customary law texts (awig-awig). Finding: Findings indicate that mepasah serves not only as a spiritual-ecological expression but also as a subtle form of resistance against the commodification and homogenization of death rituals. The sacred landscape of Sema Wayah, where corpses naturally decompose beneath the Taru Menyan tree, is interpreted as a living deathscape that preserves ancestral harmony and embodies a localized ecological ethic. Conclusion: Utilizing the theoretical frameworks of ecological spirituality and dark green religion, this study reveals mepasah as a form of sustainable mortuary practice rooted in indigenous ecological wisdom and cultural cosmology. Novelty/Originality of this article: The originality of this article lies in its application of a theo-eco-cosmological lens to the analysis of indigenous death rites. It offers a significant contribution to the fields of postmortem body anthropology, spiritual ecology, and relational ontology, while presenting mepasah as a living heritage that bridges ancestral spirituality with ecological reverence for death

    Agricultural value chain development for rural economic growth

    Background: This study examines local economic development (LED) strategies in Muktijaya Village, Setu District, Bekasi Regency, Indonesia, with a focus on leveraging the agricultural potential as a key for community empowerment and sustainable growth. The research is grounded in the transformative legal framework established by Law 6/2014 on Villages, which grants villages greater autonomy and emphasizes community participation in development processes. Methods: Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology and case study design, the study analyzes secondary data from documentation studies and literature reviews to explore supporting and inhibiting factors, government efforts, and strategic approaches to LED in Muktijaya Village. Findings: Findings indicate that Muktijaya Village has emerged as a significant galangal production center, with a large cultivation area and relatively high productivity. However, the local economy faces persistent challenges, including reliance on conventional farming techniques, limited post-harvest innovation, and restricted market access, which collectively constrain the added value derived from galangal cultivation. Conclusion: The study identifies key indicators for effective LED, such as employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, income improvement, empowerment of micro and small enterprises, partnerships and networking, human resource development, and technology utilization. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Blakely & Bradshaw and Saragih, the research underscores the importance of comprehensive strategies that integrate yield improvement, processing innovation, and market expansion. Novelty/Originality of this article: The analysis concludes that a holistic approach—combining community empowerment, institutional strengthening, and technological innovation—is essential for enhancing competitiveness, improving livelihoods, and achieving sustainable economic development in Muktijaya Village. The study’s insights are relevant for similar rural contexts seeking to capitalize on local resources and foster inclusive growth through participatory and innovative development strategies

    A regulated fishing policy to support food security in the marine and fisheries sector

    Background: Indonesia, as the world's largest archipelagic country, holds vast marine resources crucial for national food security. However, the increasing fish consumption coupled with unsustainable fishing practices has led to overfishing, impacting marine ecosystems and food security. To address this, a measured fishing policy is essential to optimize fish harvest while ensuring marine sustainability.  Methods: This study employs a qualitative descriptive analysis method through a literature review approach. It examines concepts related to food security, the Blue Economy, and the implementation of measured fishing policies. Data are collected from scientific references, national policies, and international regulations to identify control instruments and develop comprehensive policy recommendations. Findings: The findings indicate that measured fishing, characterized by regulated fishing quotas, vessel numbers, and fishing zones, is effective in preventing overfishing while ensuring food security. The strategy includes setting quotas aligned with ecosystem capacity, managing vessel numbers, establishing integrated monitoring systems, and optimizing non-tax state revenue (PNBP). Additionally, empowering small-scale fishers and ensuring inter-sectoral synergy are crucial for sustainable fisheries management. Conclusion: Measured fishing policies significantly contribute to national food security by balancing economic growth and marine ecosystem sustainability. The implementation of this policy enhances fish resource management and supports the welfare of coastal communities. Novelty: This study offers a comprehensive framework for measured fishing policy as a strategic solution to overfishing, integrating sustainable practices with economic empowerment. It also highlights the role of Blue Economy principles in supporting Indonesia's food security and sustainable marine resource management
