From social media to mainstream media: Rethinking news verification in the age of artificial intelligence
Background: In Indonesia, social media platforms such as YouTube, WhatsApp, and TikTok have become dominant news sources, surpassing traditional mainstream media. However, this shift has triggered a crisis of verification, further complicated by the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated content, including deepfakes and AI-based news production, which blurs the boundary between fact and fabrication. Methods: This study employed a qualitative approach through library research and reflective theoretical analysis, supported by documentary observations of current phenomena involving viral social media content entering mainstream media channels. Analysis was conducted thematically, critically, and contextually, synthesizing previous scholarly findings with contemporary digital media practices. Findings: The results indicate that the flow of information from social media to mainstream media has dismantled traditional gatekeeping roles, replacing them with a decentralized and algorithm-driven ecosystem. AI technologies, while enhancing efficiency, introduce epistemological challenges by generating credible but potentially inaccurate content without ethical responsibility. Furthermore, the study highlights that traditional verification mechanisms are inadequate against the speed and complexity of digital information flows. Effective information verification today requires collaborative, technology-assisted, and participatory strategies, integrating innovations such as AI-supported fact-checking tools and blockchain verification. Simultaneously, media literacy must evolve to include algorithmic awareness and critical interpretation skills. Conclusion: The crisis of information verification is not merely technical but communicative, involving shifts in authority, credibility, and ethical responsibility in the digital era. Addressing this crisis demands a systemic overhaul of verification practices through multiparty collaboration and ethical frameworks for AI communication. Novelty/Originality of this article: It offers a novel synthesis between AI-mediated communication theories and real-world media practices, proposing a redefinition of public communication that incorporates non-human actors like AI as influential communicators within digital ecosystems
Sociology-based character education strategies and their role in shaping moral development in boarding-based islamic education
Background: Character education is a foundational aspect of Islamic education, particularly at the primary level, where students begin to internalize moral and social values. In Indonesia, boarding-based madrasah institutions offer a unique environment for character formation due to their immersive and socially intensive settings. This study aims to explore the extent to which character-building strategies based on the sociology of education contribute to the character development of sixth-grade students at MIN 1 Banyumas, a state Islamic elementary school with a residential program. The theoretical framework draws from sociological theories emphasizing the role of structured social environments in shaping individual behavior and identity. The strategies examined in this study include daily habituation practices, exemplary modeling by educators and caregivers, value-based communication, and intentional peer interaction designed to reinforce shared norms and ethics. Methods: This research employs a quantitative associative design involving total sampling of all students living in the school’s dormitory. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire that had undergone tests for validity and reliability. The data were then analyzed using simple linear regression to determine the relationship between character-building strategies and character outcomes. Findings: The results reveal a statistically significant influence, with a p-value of 0.045 and an R-squared value of 0.136. These findings suggest that 13.6 percent of the variance in character development can be attributed to the implemented strategies. Conclusion: The study concludes that character formation in Islamic boarding environments benefits significantly from structured, socially embedded educational strategies. Novelty/Originality of this article: It calls for the institutionalization of sociologically grounded approaches to character education that are sensitive to students’ daily interactions, cultural context, and moral experiences
Influence of family environment, socioeconomic status, and maternal knowledge on childhood diarrhea risk
Background: Diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children in Indonesia, particularly in areas with limited access to sanitation and clean water. Environmental factors and family educational levels are presumed to contribute to the incidence of childhood diarrhea. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parental education, family environmental conditions, and the incidence of diarrhea among children at Kameri Health Center. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design with purposive sampling. A total of 46 respondents who had children under five suffering from diarrhea at Kameri Health Center in 2024 were included. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square statistical test. Findings: The results showed a significant association between family environmental conditions and diarrhea incidence (p=0.000), socioeconomic status and diarrhea incidence (p=0.003), as well as maternal knowledge level and diarrhea incidence (p=0.000). Unhygienic environments, low economic status, and insufficient maternal knowledge regarding diarrhea contributed to the high prevalence of diarrhea among children. Conclusion: Family environmental conditions, socioeconomic status, and maternal knowledge are strongly associated with childhood diarrhea. Therefore, health education, adequate sanitation facilities, and community-based interventions are necessary to reduce its incidence. Educational model for prevention and management of food waste generation: A systematic literature review
Background: This research aims to analyze educational models for preventing and managing food waste for communities such as households, schools, or other downstream sectors. Methods: The research method used is a literature review of international journal articles indexed by Scopus related to the research theme in the 2020–2023 time period. The initial search obtained 168 journal articles, and then 64 articles were selected with educational targets in the downstream sector such as households, schools, and others. Then 11 articles were selected again using the criteria of empirical study results. So the final screening results obtained 11 articles for further analysis. Findings: The results of the study show that in educational efforts to prevent and manage food waste for downstream sectors such as communities, households, and others, it is necessary to pay attention to the educational approach model used, namely the mentalistic approach and the conditional approach, taking into account the objective coverage of educational targets, namely changing behavior towards food waste and reducing the amount of food waste generation. The research results also show that there are obstacles that arise during the educational process of preventing and managing food waste so to minimize obstacles it is necessary to pay attention to essential factors to change the behavior of a group of people. Conclusion: The study emphasizes that effective food waste education requires appropriate approach models and careful consideration of behavioral change factors to achieve sustainable waste reduction outcomes in downstream sectors. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty lies in synthesizing empirical studies to identify specific educational approach models and key behavioral factors that influence the success of food waste prevention and management in downstream community sectors
Tax policy and green sukuk in closing the sustainable finance gap
Background: Indonesia faces a significant climate financing gap, while existing fiscal instruments have not yet produced consistent reductions in financing costs or clearly measurable environmental outcomes. This study aims to propose an integrated mechanism that links environmental tax revenues with green sukuk, drawing on insights from the literature on green bond governance, risk-premium theory, climate budget tagging, and outcome-based budgeting to address persistent issues of project readiness, investor risk perception, and impact verification. Methods: The study applies a descriptive-analytical approach supported by quantitative modeling using 2018–2024 historical data on carbon tax potential, green sukuk yields, issuance volume, and selected outcome indicators, complemented by a theoretical review of the above frameworks. Findings: The analysis indicates that allocating 0.5–1% of environmental tax revenue into a Green Financing Reserve can reduce perceived risk, potentially lowering yields by 10–25 basis points and expanding issuance capacity, while improving project execution through milestone-based disbursement. This pattern is consistent with the theory that credible risk buffers and verifiable outcomes can compress risk premia and strengthen the causal chain from earmarked revenue to financing efficiency and environmental results (e.g., emission reduction and renewable energy deployment). Conclusion: The Carbon Tax–Backed Green Bond Enhancement Model offers a fiscally disciplined and outcome-oriented framework to enhance both the affordability and effectiveness of green sukuk as a climate financing instrument. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article introduces an integrated model that systematically links carbon tax revenues with sovereign green sukuk risk mitigation through a dedicated fiscal reserve aligned with syariah governance, offering a replicable and evidence-based mechanism for narrowing national climate financing gaps
Socio-ecological perspectives on the carbon absorption process of tea plants (Camellia sinensis): Age-based estimates at Tambi plantation
Background: As an effort to reduce current climate change, conservation measures such as carbon stock measurements are needed. Tea plants are a suitable commodity for transforming towards low carbon production because perennial plants such as can absorb and store more carbon than seasonal agricultural crops. Methods: Sampling was carried out using a random sampling method that was taken randomly to represent a population for each block number. Data collection for the study was carried out by taking 3 soil and plant samples at each age of the tea plant with an age of 10 years, 30 years, 40 years, and 100 years. The plant samples taken were leaves, stems, roots, and litter. The soil samples taken were soil with a depth of 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-30 cm with disturbed and undisturbed soil sampling. Findings: The total carbon stock value of tea plants stored in the Pemandangan Block UP Tambi is 63.17 tons/ha in 10-year-old tea plants; 67.26 tons/ha in 30-year-old tea plants; 67.87 tons/ha in 40-year-old tea plants; and 69.40 tons/ha in 100-year-old tea plants. The NDVI value obtained has a range of 0.384 - 0.557 which does not really reflect the actual age of the plant because of the process of pruning tea plant shoots which is carried out every four years. This results in the spectral radiation of tea plant vegetation even though the age of the plant is very different. Conclusion: The Pemandangan Block of the Tambi Plantation Unit contains tea plants aged 10, 30, 40, and 100 years with an NDVI range of 0.384 to 0.557, where satellite-derived vegetation indices do not represent actual plant age due to replanting and pruning, making them unsuitable for soil carbon stock estimation. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study offers novelty by integrating field-based carbon stock measurements of tea plants with variations in plant age and Sentinel-2A remote sensing analysis, providing a unique contribution to understanding the relationship between soil properties, biomass, and carbon storage capacity in tea plantations, which has not been extensively explored in previous research
The conservation of the white cattle of Taro as a representation of Prāṇī-Dharma values, biodiversity preservation, and religious heritage
Background: The breeding of white cattle in Taro Village, Bali, is not merely an agricultural or economic activity, but one deeply intertwined with spiritual values rooted in the concept of Prāṇī-Dharma. In this context, white cattle are revered not only as symbols of prosperity and wealth, but also as sacred beings that embody harmony between humans and nature. This study aims to explore how the breeding of white cattle in Taro functions as a representation of Prāṇī-Dharma values, particularly in relation to the preservation of tradition and ecology. Methods: Employing a qualitative case study approach, this research involved in-depth interviews with breeders, religious figures, and local community members, as well as field observations of rituals and cattle-rearing practices. The data were analyzed thematically to identify the connections between Hindu spiritual concepts and the practice of white cattle breeding. Finding: The findings reveal that the breeding of Taro’s white cattle reflects an integration of spiritual and ecological dimensions within the local community. The white cattle are regarded as symbols of purity and environmental balance, protected through the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Karuṇā (compassion), which lie at the heart of Prāṇī-Dharma. This practice also plays a vital role in the conservation of living beings and the preservation of local cultural traditions. Conclusion: The study concludes that the breeding of white cattle in Taro is not only a conservation practice but also a means of reinforcing moral and spiritual values within Hindu society. This research contributes to the understanding of the relationship between divine ecology and traditional conservation, enriching the discourse on how religion and local culture support environmental sustainability. Novelty/Originality of this article: The uniqueness of this study lies in the placement of white cattle breeding in Taro as an applied model of Prāṇī-Dharma, which shows how spiritual ethics directly influence conservation practices
Strategic evaluation of the black soldier fly maggot supply chain for sustainable agribusiness development
Background: Optimal and efficient management is needed in handling food waste so that it does not become an environmental problem that impacts global warming, one of which is in Surakarta. One solution is to use maggots derived from black soldier fly larvae for food waste management. The importance of the role of maggots is not in line with its supply chain in Surakarta City, so the operation system is not optimal. This study aims to evaluate how the maggot supply chain in Surakarta is illustrated and provide strategies for the sustainability of the maggot supply chain in Surakarta amid various existing obstacles. Methods: This study uses qualitative descriptive techniques with purposive sampling for the selection of informants and experts and continues with analytical techniques using ISM-MICMAC and AHP. Findings: The ISM–MICMAC results identify a four-level hierarchical structure of the BSF maggot supply chain in Surakarta. Labor and technology are the main driver variables with strong driving power and low dependency, playing a crucial role in system performance. Weather factors act as external drivers requiring effective risk mitigation. Operational factors, including feed availability, market demand, and supply chain cooperation, are highly dependent on higher-level drivers, while pest disturbance appears as a purely consequential variable. The absence of linkage variables indicates a relatively stable system structure. Overall, strengthening labor, technology adoption, and climate adaptability is key to achieving a resilient and sustainable maggot supply chain. Conclusion: The evaluation of the maggot supply chain in Surakarta City can be divided based on the priority numbers to be paid more attention. There needs to be synergy of cooperation between supply chain actors to ensure the sustainability of production in the future. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study is that there is no research on the evaluation and strategy of the maggot supply chain in the city of Surakarta as well as the combination of analysis methods using the ISM-MICMAC and AHP approaches
Exploring green investment interest in Islamic finance: The case of Indonesian Green Sukuk among university students
Background: The escalating frequency of natural disasters in Indonesia, particularly hydrometeorological hazards, underscores the urgency of sustainable financing instruments that integrate environmental responsibility with Islamic ethical principles. The Indonesian Green Sukuk (IGS) represents such an instrument, yet little is known about the factors influencing young investors’ interest in it. Building on the Theory of Consumption Value (TCV), which comprises functional, social, religious, emotional, and knowledge dimensions, this study examines how these values shape students’ green investment interest. Methods: A quantitative correlational design was employed using cross-sectional data collected from 178 Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students through an online questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression to test the influence of value dimensions, complemented by cluster tests to identify demographic variations. Findings: The results show that among the five TCV dimensions, only knowledge value significantly affects investment interest (odds ratio = 3.22, p < 0.05). Functional, social, religious, and emotional values were not significant. Cluster tests further reveal variations in investment interest based on gender, faculty affiliation, and income level, suggesting that demographic factors also play a role. Conclusion: Investment interest in IGS is primarily driven by cognitive understanding of its mechanisms, benefits, and sustainability impacts, rather than by functional, social, religious, or emotional considerations. Enhancing financial literacy is therefore essential to increase students’ engagement with sustainable Islamic financial instruments. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study contributes to the literature by applying TCV in the context of Islamic green finance among university students, a demographic often overlooked in prior research. It introduces the Integrated Greenvestment Class as an innovative literacy program to foster a generation of young investors who are financially literate, sustainability-oriented, and guided by Islamic ethical values in their financial decision-making
The Parāvidyā–Aparāvidyā paradigm in Hindu epistemology as a foundational framework for Hindu higher education in Indonesia
Background: The Parāvidyā–Aparāvidyā paradigm serves as a foundational epistemological framework within the Hindu knowledge system, emphasizing the integration of material (aparā) and spiritual-transcendental (parā) dimensions. This article critically examines the relevance and urgency of this paradigm as a basis for constructing a distinct Hindu epistemology, particularly in the context of developing curricula and the educational vision of Hindu Higher Education in Indonesia. Through a philosophical analysis of primary sources such as the Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad, Chāndogya Upaniṣad, and Vedānta Sūtra, this study argues that the Parāvidyā Aparāvidyā framework not only bridges empirical and spiritual knowledge, but also offers a viable alternative to the hegemony of the Western positivist paradigm that has long dominated educational systems. Methods: Employing a qualitative-hermeneutic and conceptual approach, this paper demonstrates that the application of this paradigm can foster a holistic educational model grounded in values of civility, spirituality, and self-awareness. Finding: The findings indicate that while awareness of the duality between spiritual and worldly knowledge is growing within Hindu Religious Higher Education Institutions/Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Hindu (PTKH), its implementation remains limited and has not yet been systematically integrated into curricula, pedagogy, or assessment practices. The findings recommend a reformulation of the epistemological orientation of Hindu Higher Education toward a learning system that balances sakala and niskala aspects, thus better equipping it to address contemporary civilizational challenges in a sustainable and Dharma-based manner. Conclusion: Through a hermeneutic and transdisciplinary approach, this research has constructed an alternative epistemic model DIKWP (Data–Information–Knowledge–Wisdom–Peace), which not only expands the conventional DIKW framework but also enriches the spiritual dimension of intellectual formation. True knowledge, from a Hindu perspective, does not culminate in wisdom alone but must result in inner transformation, manifesting as peace (śānti) and spiritual liberation (mokṣa). Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in its philosophical reconstruction of the Parāvidyā–Aparāvidyā paradigm as a comprehensive epistemological framework for Hindu Higher Education in Indonesia
