Analysis of heavy metal (Cd, Hg, Fe) contamination in canal water as an environmental challenge
Background: This study aims to determine the quality of water channels close to rice fields and houses that produce domestic and agricultural waste based on heavy metal contamination. Method: Water sampling was carried out directly at the research location and tested at the UPTD Regional Health Laboratory of Gorontalo Province. The sampling points amounted to three points, namely station I, station II, and station III. The water quality parameters analyzed included heavy metals (Cd, Hg, Fe), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and temperature. Results: The results of Cd heavy metal concentrations at each point were station I (0 mg/L), station II (0 mg/L), and station III (0 mg/L). Heavy metal Hg was recorded at station I (0.0038 mg/L), station II (0.00185 mg/L), and station III (0 mg/L). Fe heavy metal concentrations were station I (1.20685 mg/L), station II (1.0082 mg/L), and station III (0.4 mg/L). The pH value in Tamalate canal water remained stable at around 7, with station I (7.3), station II (7.4), and station III (7.3). The DO values were station I (82.7 mg/L), station II (85.1 mg/L), and station III (81.7 mg/L). The BOD values were station I (55.35 mg/L), station II (51.85 mg/L), and station III (57.05 mg/L). The COD values were station I (110.5 mg/L), station II (109.5 mg/L), and station III (119.5 mg/L). The temperature measurements were station I (30.95℃), station II (29.35℃), and station III (30.2℃). Conclusion: The distribution of heavy metals in canal water is quite varied due to the influence of environmental conditions and activities around the Tamalate canal, resulting in uneven distribution. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a detailed assessment of heavy metal contamination using multiple water quality indicators. It highlights the influence of surrounding land use, including domestic and agricultural activities, on metal distribution and overall water quality
Environmental carrying capacity of Batujai Reservoir-Praya, Central Lombok in terms of water quality and the role of eichhornia crassipes in nutrient and lead (Pb) removal
Background: The Batujai Reservoir faces challenges related to nutrient pollution and heavy metal contamination. Phytoremediation using Eichhornia crassipes has been recognized for its potential to mitigate water quality issues. This study evaluates the environmental carrying capacity of the Batujai Reservoir, focusing on water quality and the role of Eichhornia crassipes in the removal of nutrients and the heavy metal lead (Pb). Methods: Water quality analysis was conducted by measuring pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and total dissolved solids (TDS). Analysis of concentrations of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and Pb at both the inlet and outlet of the reservoir. Findings: The study found that DO levels remained high and stable at both the inlet and outlet, with a slight reduction at the outlet due to organic matter decomposition. Eichhornia crassipes contributed to maintaining DO levels through photosynthesis. The pH ranged from 7.94 to 8.30, slightly alkaline, supporting Pb stabilization as precipitates. The temperature increased from inlet to outlet but remained within normal limits. Low TDS (154.33–159.67 mg/L) indicated good water quality, while a decrease in conductivity from inlet to outlet suggested the absorption of dissolved ions by Eichhornia crassipes. The plant effectively absorbed nitrogen, phosphate, and Pb, confirming its role as a phytoremediation agent. However, uncontrolled growth could result in mass decomposition and oxygen depletion, which may harm the ecosystem. Conclusion: The study concludes that the Batujai Reservoir has stable water quality, supporting its capacity to maintain aquatic life. Nevertheless, careful management of Eichhornia crassipes is required to prevent ecological imbalance caused by overgrowth and decomposition. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This study contributes new insights into the dual role of Eichhornia crassipes in maintaining water quality and acting as a phytoremediation agent for nutrient and heavy metal (Pb) removal in the Batujai Reservoir. It highlights the importance of balancing Eichhornia crassipes growth to optimize environmental carrying capacity
Japanese work culture from Hofstede's perspective: An analysis of workers' experiences through social media channels
Background: Japanese office workers are widely recognized for their discipline, innovation, and strong work ethic. These values reflect Japan’s collective dedication to organizational and national advancement. However, this cultural rigor also creates psychological pressure and limited individual freedom. Understanding this phenomenon through Hofstede’s cultural dimensions offers insights into Japan’s distinctive work behavior. Methods: This study employed documentation and literature study techniques. Video interviews of six Japanese workers from the Takashi From Japan YouTube channel were analyzed using Hofstede’s four cultural dimensions: power distance, collectivism vs. individualism, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity/femininity. Supporting literature was reviewed to validate findings. Finding: Results reveal a high power distance, with workers showing strong obedience toward superiors and organizational hierarchy. Japanese work culture is predominantly collectivist, emphasizing group harmony and social contribution over personal interest. A high level of uncertainty avoidance leads workers to remain in rigid systems to minimize risk. Although less explored, masculinity is evident through hard work, self-sacrifice, and achievement orientation. Overall, the culture fosters stability and loyalty but often causes psychological strain and reduced personal expression. Conclusion: Japanese work culture is characterized by hierarchy, collectivism, and avoidance of uncertainty, reinforcing discipline and organizational stability while creating pressure and emotional fatigue among workers. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study offers a unique qualitative exploration of Japanese work culture through Hofstede’s framework based on real worker experiences from digital media sources, providing fresh insights into cultural dynamics in modern Japan
The effect of product quality, brand image, price perception, and promotion on the purchase decision of facial wash products in the Jakarta area
Background: The skincare industry in Indonesia has been growing rapidly, resulting in intense competition among brands. Companies must therefore focus on product quality, brand image, price perception, and promotional strategies to influence consumer purchasing behavior. This study aims to analyze the effects of these four variables on purchasing decisions for Garnier facial wash products. Methods: This research used primary data collected through questionnaires distributed to 150 respondents in the Greater Jakarta area who have purchased and used Garnier facial wash. The sampling technique applied was non-probability sampling with accidental sampling. The data were analyzed using SPSS, employing validity, reliability, normality, multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, multiple linear regression, F-test, T-test, and coefficient of determination tests. Finding: The results show that product quality, brand image, price perception, and promotion have a simultaneous and partial positive effect on purchasing decisions. Among these, product quality has the most dominant influence, indicating that consumers prioritize product effectiveness and reliability when purchasing skincare products. Conclusion: Product quality, brand image, price perception, and promotion significantly and positively affect consumer purchasing decisions for Garnier facial wash. Product quality remains the most decisive factor, suggesting that continuous improvement in quality, coupled with strong branding, fair pricing, and effective promotion, can enhance consumer purchase intentions. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study contributes empirical evidence on the relative importance of marketing mix variables—especially product quality—in influencing purchasing decisions in Indonesia’s competitive skincare market. It highlights the dominance of perceived product quality in shaping consumer choices for beauty care products
Implementation of ecosufism values of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's thought in building frugal living awareness in the modern era
Background: Human life is closely related to the environment they live in. The phenomenon that has hit many people today is consumptive behavior. Consumptive habits can lead to increased production of waste that is difficult to decompose by nature. Waste management and forest fires are environmental issues that are increasingly urgent to be taken seriously. Waste, especially plastic waste, is one of the main causes of environmental pollution. On the other hand, forest fires are a global environmental problem that has serious impacts on climate change, biodiversity, and human health. The emergence of these problems shows the lack of public awareness in environmental management. This research will integrate the values of ecosufism and frugal living, so that it can be a solution to the challenges of ecological pollution and the impact of consumptive behavior. Methods: This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Primary and secondary data were obtained from books, journals and articles, both national and international. Findings: Ecosufism teaches that nature is a sign of God's greatness that must be preserved, this principle can be implemented through frugal living where humans use existing resources wisely and responsibly, so that the relationship between humans, nature and God can run in harmony. Conclusion: By integrating the values of ecosufism and frugal living behavior, public awareness of this can contribute to the reduction of waste, prevention of environmental damage, restoration of natural balance and preventing forest fires from occurring. Novelty/Originality of this article: The synergy between ecosufism and frugal living provides a solution that is not only oriented towards preventing forest fires and protecting nature in the short term but also building a more sustainable mindset and behavior in the long term
Development of hybrid protein cookies with a two-phase natural preservation system: Sustainable functional food innovation for nutritional and environmental sustainability
Background: Global food security faces significant challenges, particularly with projected rapid population growth and limited natural resources. In an effort to support sustainable food security, this study aims to develop hybrid protein cookies that combine animal and plant proteins and implement a two-phase natural preservation system. Previous studies have shown that the use of hybrid proteins can improve the nutritional quality of food products, while natural preservation systems can reduce dependence on harmful synthetic preservatives. Methods: This study used a comprehensive literature review method to formulate optimal formulation, as well as experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination of whey protein, pumpkin seed flour, and mung bean in improving the nutritional profile and shelf life of cookies. Findings: The results showed that these hybrid protein cookies have a higher protein content, a softer texture, and a shelf life up to 40% longer compared to conventional cookies. Conclusion: These findings support the importance of utilizing dairy industry waste such as whey protein, as well as local resources in improving sustainability and food security. In conclusion, this hybrid protein cookie innovation offers a new solution in creating nutritious, environmentally friendly food products and supporting local economic empowerment. Novelty/Originality of this article: The original aspect of this research is the application of a natural preservation system using mangosteen peel extract, which provides a new contribution to the development of sustainable functional food products
Climate change education challenges in Indonesia: Educators’ perspective
Background: Indonesia, as an archipelago, is vulnerable to climate change. This research focuses on the importance of education in increasing community awareness and capacity for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Education is key to changing attitudes and habits, especially among children who are vulnerable but have great potential to adapt. The Indonesian government's initiative through the launch of the Climate Change Education Guidebook, which complements the independent curriculum, aims to help various stakeholders improve climate literacy and encourage collaborative action in addressing climate change. The purpose of writing this article is to identify the challenges faced by educators in teaching climate change education in schools. Methods: The method used in this research is qualitative, conducting in-depth interviews with three educators at different levels: elementary, junior high, and high school, each located in Lamandau District, Central Kalimantan, Bekasi, West Java, and Kaimana, West Papua. The results of the interviews are then analyzed to determine the gap between the concept of climate change education based on the independent curriculum and the implementation process in the field. Findings: Based on the results of the interviews, the three informants were unaware of the Climate Change Education Guidebook. Nevertheless, the three informants have begun to integrate climate change education lessons into the disciplines they teach. In addition to being directly integrated into classroom lessons, there is a Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5) that helps students understand environmental issues and apply them directly in the school environment. However, training for educators on climate change education needs to be conducted to boost educators' confidence and enhance students' motivation to learn. Conclusion: This study concludes that the implementation of climate change education requires special attention because the challenges arise not only from educators but also from the weak education system in Indonesia, which creates disparities between regions. Novelty/Originality of this article: The study highlights the limited awareness of the Climate Change Education Guidebook among educators, despite its integration potential within the independent curriculum. This research contributes new insights into the practical challenges of implementing climate education in Indonesia and emphasizes the urgency of targeted training to strengthen both teacher readiness and student motivation
Cultural mapping of teachers’ spatial agency and social practices
Background: Fluctuating policy changes, the demand for rapid adaptation, and high socio-cultural expectations for producing ideal students generate systemic pressure among Indonesian teachers. Such pressure requires analysis beyond administrative or psychological metrics toward the spatial contexts in which teaching is actually lived. Methods: This study analyzes how teachers’ social practices shape and are shaped by the spatial dynamics of their daily lives and workplaces, positioning them as active agents in the production of educational space. A qualitative, intensive contrastive case study was conducted with three active teachers (N = 3) across diverse spatial contexts. Complementary spatial analysis using ArcGIS slope mapping was applied to contextualize topographical risk, enriching interpretation of teachers’ lived geographies. Data were gathered through participatory mapping workshops that produced story maps, complemented by map-based interviews, and analyzed through cross-case thematic analysis. Findings: Findings indicate that professional stress materializes into risk-prone geographies, countered by three primary spatial tactics: symbolic deviation, social-informational capital, and hedonic compensation or role integration. Topographical slope analysis further corroborates teachers’ narratives of risk-prone mobility, revealing how physical gradients materially condition professional stress and spatial inequity. Conclusion: These results suggest that teacher resilience is an active, spatially produced phenomenon contingent upon the symbolic transformation of ordinary materiality. Recognizing the material and emotional dimensions of educational space provides a foundation for designing spatially responsive well-being programs and geographically equitable teacher policies. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study introduces a spatial lens on teacher resilience within Indonesia’s educational geography, advancing the methodological integration of cultural mapping and topographical analysis in understanding lived pedagogical space
A system dynamics model for rice farmers’ livelihood resilience in Indonesia coastal area
Background: Climate change has become a major global challenge, particularly for vulnerable archipelagic and agrarian countries like Indonesia. Many rice fields in coastal areas—including Cirebon District—are highly exposed to extreme climate events such as prolonged droughts. These conditions disrupt rice farmers’ livelihood systems and reduce their income, threatening their overall livelihood resilience. Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods approach by integrating qualitative and quantitative data to develop a system dynamics model. The model explored interactions between livelihood capital assets, self-organization, learning capacity, and climate conditions. Livelihood resilience was assessed through farmers’ income as a key livelihood outcome. Finding: Model outcomes show that rice farmers’ livelihood systems are not resilient to drought impacts, as their income consistently falls below the ideal threshold. Drought events disrupt livelihoods and lead to income losses, and current farmer-led adaptation efforts are insufficient to improve resilience. Without intervention from government or relevant stakeholders, the livelihood system is projected to remain non-resilient in the future. Conclusion: Rice farmers in Cirebon District lack adequate resilience to cope with drought impacts. Strengthening livelihood resilience requires targeted government interventions to improve critical subsystems, including irrigation governance, crop insurance mechanisms, adaptive farming capacity, and access to climate information. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a system-level understanding of rice farmers’ livelihood resilience by integrating system dynamics modeling with mixed-methods data. It offers a holistic analysis of how livelihood assets, learning capacity, self-organization, and climate stressors interact, and identifies leverage points for policy intervention in drought-prone coastal regions
From concrete jungles to urban gardens: AI-powered solutions for sustainable food production in cities
Introduction: Urban agriculture in Indonesia faces critical challenges including agricultural land conversion, aging farmer workforce (39% over 55 years, only 21% millennials), and rural urban inequality. While deep learning technologies prove effective for agricultural optimization, Indonesia lags neighboring countries due to regulatory ambiguity, limited incentives, and low youth participation. This study develops Urfalogy, an artificial intelligence powered platform addressing three primary urban farming constraints: limited space, insufficient capital, and inadequate technology. Methods: This research employed Agile software development methodology integrated with deep learning. The You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOv8) algorithm was utilized for environmental object detection and segmentation. Dataset preprocessing included multiple augmentation techniques: scaling, geometric transformation, brightness adjustment, contrast and color saturation modifications. The platform integrates nine features: artificial intelligence layout designer, plant variety recommender, plant health detection, soil monitoring with internet of things sensors, e-commerce, real time expert consultation, appointment scheduling, interactive tutorials, and analytics dashboard. Finding: Model training achieved optimal performance metrics at epoch 100: segment loss of 0.56756, recall of 90.01%, and mean Average Precision at intersection over union 0.50 (mAP50) of 90.715%. During inference, the model successfully identified environmental components (ceiling, wall, floor), enabling precise spatial mapping for garden layout design. The integrated platform demonstrates comprehensive end to end capability supporting complete urban farming workflow from planning through sales. Conclusion: Urfalogy represents a transformative solution effectively bridging Indonesia's urban agriculture gap through artificial intelligence, Internet of Things integration, and human centered design, significantly advancing sustainability, food security, and economic opportunities. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research uniquely combines deep learning-based spatial optimization with comprehensive platform ecosystem design, integrating YOLOv8 environmental analysis with real-time consultation and e-commerce, addressing specific technological, economic, and accessibility barriers in Indonesian urban agriculture
