    Utilization of POME waste as a renewable energy source in the life cycle concept of palm oil biodiesel

    Background: In 2024, Indonesia, an importer of crude oil and fuel, is shifting focus to renewable energy as fossil fuel production declines. This research aims to develop a life cycle concept for biodiesel production from palm oil, addressing environmental concerns related to emissions from FFB, CPO, and biodiesel production processes. Methods: The method used in this research is a combination of quantitative LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) along with qualitative methods. Findings:  This research identifies and evaluates the alternative utilization of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) waste with certain priority weights. The results showed that biodiesel production from palm oil requires various significant inputs, such as NPK fertilizer, herbicides, water, diesel, and Crude Palm Oil (CPO), resulting in environmental emissions in the form of CO2 of 1489 Kg CO2 (eq) per ton of biodiesel, as well as contributions to eutrophication and acidification. The LCI (Life Cycle Inventory) analysis also identified that the largest CO2 emissions came from POME waste (53%), followed by NPK fertilizer (23%), methanol (18%), and diesel oil (7%), while eutrophication and acidification indicated significant contributions from NPK fertilizer, methanol, diesel oil, and POME waste. These findings confirm the importance of utilizing POME waste as an optimal step to reduce CO2 emissions with a potential reduction of up to 667.2 Kg CO2 through a more sustainable biodiesel production life cycle concept. Conclusion: From this result, researchers recommend that palm oil companies start replacing chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers to reduce environmental impacts, and encourage the utilization of POME waste at Palm Oil Mills as a source of biogas for renewable energy. At the biodiesel industry level, increasing the methanol recycling rate is proposed to improve efficiency and reduce emissions at the downstream stage of biodiesel production.     Environmental education for the isolated tribe (Anak Dalam) community in Jambi Province on conservation and environmental sanitation

    Background: Suku Anak Dalam or commonly called Suku Anak Dalamare a community group who still adheres the traditions. Their life that depends on the forest makes them need to protect and preserve the forest where they live. This research aims to examine the environmental education of Suku Anak Dalam related to their environmental conservation and sanitation. Methods: This study used a qualitative-descriptive approach, with an ethnographic research design. The research informants were 10 people consisting of the Suku Anak Dalam and the outer community. Then the questionnaire distributed to 15 students who are of Suku Anak Dalam ethnic. Data analysis techniques are generally used in qualitative research, and added purposive sampling to analyze the samples that have been determined. Findings: The results show that Suku Anak Dalamin Nagasari Village use Traditional Law, namely the Seleko Adat, which presents local wisdom values to preserving the environment by referring to traditional law that obtained from generation to generation. The typical way of Suku Anak Dalam community in preserving the environment is variety. First, they have to plant 2 trees when the child born. Second, taking care of the environment, because Gods will be angry, example they would not use soap and they not defecate in the river. Third, enforcing Traditional law, because stricter than religious and state law. environmental conservation and sanitation knowledge is carried out from daily activities. Conclusion: Daily necessities such as bathing using bidaro leaves and urang aring leaves, washing in the river but not using detergent soap. They do not defecate into the river, but they have a toilet that located about 10 metres from the river. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this research lies in exploring how the Suku Anak Dalam community integrates traditional laws and daily practices into environmental conservation and sanitation, offering unique insights into their sustainable lifestyle

    ZeaPackage: The potential of corn husk (Zea mays L.) for biodegradable paper bags as a strategy for waste reduction and implementation of circular economy concept

    Background: Plastic waste has become a global issue, including in Indonesia, where its growing impact has prompted the need for sustainable alternatives. Corn husk, an abundant agricultural waste in Indonesia, presents a potential raw material for producing biodegradable paper bags, aligning with circular economy principles and addressing the increasing demand for eco-friendly packaging. Method: This study uses a comprehensive literature review, drawing from scientific journals, textbooks, and official publications. Data analysis is conducted through descriptive and comparative techniques, including SWOT analysis, to assess the viability of corn husk-based biodegradable paper bags as an alternative to plastic. Findings: The study reveals that ZeaPackage, a biodegradable paper bag made from corn husks, is a promising alternative to plastic bags. Corn husks' high cellulose content and abundance make them ideal for large-scale production, offering an eco-friendly solution while supporting circular economy goals. Conclusion: ZeaPackage has significant potential as an environmentally sustainable alternative to plastic bags. By leveraging the abundant supply of corn husks, it contributes to waste reduction and aligns with circular economy principles, though challenges in implementation remain. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study highlights the innovative use of corn husk as a raw material for biodegradable packaging, offering a practical solution to plastic waste while adding value to agricultural by-products in Indonesia

    EmoTrack headset and smart application: An integrated solution for emotional regulation and mental health support in Indonesia’s 5.0 modernization era

    Background: Mental health issues are increasingly prevalent in Indonesia, with limited resources, social stigma, and insufficient community awareness posing barriers to effective management. Methods: This study introduces the EmoTrack Headset-App, a novel, integrated self-therapy device combining transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and binaural beat technology to support mental health and emotional regulation. This solution enables real-time mental health monitoring and offers tailored interventions through a wearable headset linked to a smartphone application. Data collection involved a literature review and device prototyping to assess the feasibility and potential impact of EmoTrack. Findings: Results indicate that tDCS and binaural beats enhance emotional stability and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, the app's community feature facilitates user engagement, helping to destigmatize mental health issues and encouraging shared experiences. Conclusions: The EmoTrack system has the potential to revolutionize mental health care by improving access to preventive and therapeutic support in Indonesia. Novelty/Originality of this article: This innovation uniquely combines tDCS and binaural beats within a single device, presenting a pioneering tool that addresses mental health and emotional regulation in a wearable, user-friendly format

    The Toba Batak tribe's cultural capital in the context of protecting Lake Toba from environmental threats

    Background: The Batak Toba tribe predominantly inhabits the Lake Toba area. Lake Toba and the Batak Toba tribe have a strong, unchangeable connection. The historically valued traditions of the Batak Toba tribe have developed over generations due to their interactions with Lake Toba, although they now face the threat of obsolescence and discord. Ecosystem services and tourism attractions are mostly utilized for economic purposes, lacking regard for local wisdom or cultural significance. Consequently, various degradations and environmental damages are inflicted by human activities and company operations in the Lake Toba area. This study aims to explore and provide the distinct cultural values of the Batak Toba tribe to promote the future sustainability of Lake Toba's ecosystem services, including protection against environmental threats and degradation. Methods: The employed methodology involved literature research and content analysis, augmented with videos obtained from diverse YouTube channels. Findings: The cultural values of the Batak Toba tribe that foster the sustainability of Lake Toba's ecosystem services encompass aek do hangoluan, poda na lima, marsirimpa, mambongoti bagas, and numerous Batak Toba songs pertaining to Lake Toba, including O Tao Toba, Tano Toba, Tao Toba Nauli, HORAS!, and Pulo Samosir. The abundance and diversity of these cultural values are expected to provide knowledge, enhance awareness among future generations of the Batak Toba tribe, and motivate a culture-driven environmental restoration initiative focused on restoring and preserving the ecological services of Lake Toba. Conclusions: The study provides a significant ecological and cultural connection between the Batak Toba tribe and Lake Toba, dating back to the era of their ancestors. Consequently, it shall remain inseparable. Novelty/Originality of this article:  The novelty of this research lies in the exploration of Toba Batak cultural values as a local wisdom-based approach to maintaining the sustainability of Lake Toba ecosystem services

    Revitalizing flood-prone areas through socio-environmental strategies: A qualitative approach to urban flood management

    Background: The Ciliwung River is one of the most important rivers in Tatar Pasundan, especially because it passes through the capital city of DKI Jakarta and often causes annual floods in its downstream areas. The length of this river reaches almost 120 km and passes through several areas, including Bogor Regency, Bogor City, Depok City, and DKI Jakarta Province. High rainfall is one of the factors that often causes flooding in areas around rivers. Methods: This research aims to analyze the management of flood disasters that occur due to the overflow of the Ciliwung River. The analysis carried out by the author used qualitative methods with a literature review. Findings: The results obtained from the literature review of several journals, namely flood management on the Ciliwung River, cannot still be said to be completely successful. This is because several factors trigger floods that have not yet been resolved and appropriate solutions are needed for flood-prone areas so that they can be revitalized so that they can provide direct benefits to the community.  Conclusion: The study highlights the persistent challenges in managing flood disasters caused by the overflow of the Ciliwung River. Despite various efforts, flood management in the Ciliwung River Basin has not been entirely successful. Several unresolved factors continue to trigger flooding, indicating the need for more effective and sustainable solutions. The revitalization of flood-prone areas is essential to mitigate the impact and provide direct benefits to the affected communities. Novelty/Originality of the Article: Unlike previous studies that focus on specific technical solutions, this research highlights the need for holistic revitalization of flood-prone areas, considering socio-environmental factors to enhance community resilience and sustainable flood mitigation strategies

    Analysis of implementation factors in the application of building information modeling (BIM) in construction projects: Enhancing disaster preparedness

    Background: Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology is game-changing in the AEC industry. BIM can significantly improve team coordination, construction productivity, project performance, and profits. The conventional construction process, where there are often conflicts between stakeholders regarding the workflow in a job, will change with the application of BIM in construction projects. In the construction sector in Indonesia, the knowledge and experience of construction service provider companies (consultants and contractors) in Indonesia needs to be studied and documented academically to enrich the body of knowledge of BIM implementation. Methods: The data used in this study are primary data obtained through questionnaires.  The data used in this study are quantitative data processed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) method with SmartPLS 4.0 software. Conclusion: From the results of this study, it is concluded that the implementation factor has a significant influence on Building Information Modeling (BIM). Based on the outer model analysis of the SmartPLS 4.0 software, it is found that the greatest influence of the implementation factor relationship on Building Information Modeling (BIM) is 0.757 or it can be said that it is 75.7%. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a unique contribution by focusing on the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the Indonesian construction sector, particularly through the lens of construction service providers' knowledge and experience, using a robust quantitative approach with SmartPLS 4.0 to analyze the influence of implementation factors on BIM adoption

    Forecast analysis of the impact of remote workers visa policy on the resilience of the tourism economy: A geographical and economic perspective

    Background: The tourism sector is most vulnerable to economic risk due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bali. As a continuation of the discourse on a particular digital nomad visa in 2022, the Remote Worker Visa is designed to mitigate economic risk. This study aims to analyze the impact of the Indonesian Remote Workers Visa on regional economic resilience in the tourism sector. Methods: This study uses a Delphi analysis approach consisting of two stages: a qualitative method with expert interview techniques and a quantitative method with a questionnaire technique. Findings: The results of the analysis are based on the results of the consensus of expert sources with standard deviation parameters (<1.5) and Interquartile (<2.5). Seven expert sources were from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and academics. The study results show that the tourism sector in Bali has not fully recovered even though there is a remote worker visa, and regional economic resilience has not been able to pass the recovery phase. Conclusion: The tourism sector is said to be able to avoid losses (vulnerability, resilience, and resilience) from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with the support of remote worker visas. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a novel analysis of the Indonesian Remote Worker Visa’s impact on Bali’s tourism resilience, using Delphi analysis to assess its effectiveness in mitigating post-pandemic economic risks

    Development strategy for natural tourism attractions: A SWOT analysis for sustainable growth

    Background: This research aims to find out Development Strategy Te'ekuea Baths as a Natural Tourism Attraction in Maleko Village, Wangi-Wangi District, Wakatobi Regency. Methods: This research was conducted in October-November 2023 using interview observation, documentation and literature study methods. The population in this research is the entire community in Maleko Village. The population in this research is the community, related agencies and visitors who carry out activities at the Te'ekuea Bathing Tour. The sample chosen in this study was 10% of 177 heads of families (KK), so 10% of the number of family heads is 17.7 or rounded up to 18 families. Meanwhile, for sample determination, the method can be used accsidental sampling. Respondents who have been determined using the method purposive sampling. In this research purposive sampling addressed to the Tourism Department, Bappeda (planning agency development regional), village heads, sub-district heads and community leaders. The data analysis carried out in this research is qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis to describe the SWOT analysis so as to obtain a tourism development strategy. Findings: The Te'ekuea Baths development strategy shows the highest opportunity in income increase (0.62) and the lowest threat in visitor disruptions (0.17). The SWOT matrix suggests four main strategies: S-O (maximize strengths for visitor attraction), W-O (improve promotion and facilities), S-T (manage eco-friendly waste and public awareness), and W-T (enhance cleanliness and facilities). The IFE matrix average score is 2.9, and EFE matrix is 2.78, indicating growth potential. Conclusions: The research emphasizes the vital role of modern digital promotion techniques, especially social media, in enhancing the visibility of Te'ekuea Baths as a tourism destination, ultimately driving greater engagement and visitor growth. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study highlights the role of modern digital promotion methods, such as websites and social media, in advancing local tourism, focusing on their effectiveness in engaging younger generations and broadening the reach of the Te'ekuea Baths tourism destination

    De jure and de facto political power dynamics during the 1997-1998 asian financial crisis: A socio-economic perspective on sustainability in Indonesia and Malaysia

    Background: The 1997-1998 Asian Financial Crisis had a profound impact on the economies and governance of many Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia. The researcher therefore sought to examine the interaction between de jure and de facto political forces that shaped Indonesia & Malaysia's crisis management strategies and institutional reforms. The study highlights the entrenched power of authoritarian leaders with the influence of business elites determining policy responses and the level of public trust. Methods: This research model uses a comparative qualitative study method, analyzing secondary sources such as literature, policies, and historical records. The researcher identifies patterns and differences in governance, economic policies, and institutional responses in both countries, providing an in-depth understanding of the political dynamics and power structures that influence crisis outcomes and impacts. Findings: The 1997-1998 Asian Financial Crisis was caused by liquidity issues, capital inflows, and institutional weaknesses. Indonesia and Malaysia's economic growth was based on fragile foundations, with crony capitalism and power imbalances contributing to the crisis. Addressing power structures, promoting openness, and adopting democratic values are crucial for long-term resilience and fairness. Malaysia implemented capital controls and maintained political stability under the leadership of Mahathir Mohamad, Indonesia's dependence on International Monetary Fund (IMF) assistance and widespread public discontent led to Soeharto's resignation and a shift towards democratization. In other words, the findings underscore the important role of political power dynamics in shaping economic and institutional resilience and provide valuable insights into the governance challenges of non-democratic regimes during crises. Conclusion: The study concludes that the contrasting crisis management strategies of Indonesia and Malaysia during the 1997-1998 Asian Financial Crisis were significantly influenced by the interplay of authoritarian political power and business elite interests. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research offers new insights by exploring how authoritarian power dynamics and the influence of business elites affect the policy strategies adopted, the level of political stability and public trust in both countries
