    The effectiveness of skimming and scanning strategies in improving reading comprehension among EFL learners

    Background: As a developing country with a vast and diverse archipelago, Indonesia requires a greater number of high-quality human resources capable of competing both nationally and internationally. One such strategy is the expanded development of English language education to strengthen human resources. Foreign a significant challenge in the learning process is the limited availability of both formal and informal platforms for students to practice the language, which hampers their progress. For EFL learners, reading is essential for acquiring the language, expanding vocabulary, and gaining broader knowledge and experiences. Methods: The research was carried out with 25 second-year students from class XI Science 1 at MA Darul Muhajirin Praya. The research utilized a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, implemented over two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four phases: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were gathered through tests, observation sheets, and documentation. Findings: The findings indicated a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension, marked by an average score increase of 8.97% from the pre-test to the second post-test. During the pre-test, only 1 student (4%) met the minimum passing standard (KKM), with an average score of 54.6. In the first post-test, 9 students (29.45%) achieved the passing score, with the average rising to 70.88. By the second post-test, 19 students (76%) had passed, with the average score reaching 77.24. Conclusion: This study concludes that applying skimming and scanning techniques greatly enhances students' reading comprehension. Incorporating these strategies into classroom English instruction effectively improves students' understanding of narrative texts, as evidenced by the findings of the action research. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study highlights the effectiveness of integrating skimming and scanning techniques into classroom English instruction for EFL learners. The novelty lies in demonstrating, through classroom action research, how these strategies significantly improve students’ comprehension of narrative texts in a measurable and systematic way

    Background: The increase in BOD in tofu wastewater is caused by soybeans as a raw material for tofu so that tofu wastewater contains protein, carbohydrates, fats and amino acids. These organic materials affect the high phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur in the water, so that the wastewater produced contains organic matter. tall one. Methods: The research design used was an experimental research type with Pretest-Posttest with Control Group. Data was collected by examining samples at the Cimahi City Environmental Laboratory. Findings: BOD levels of tofu factory wastewater before treatment were 4860 mg/L, the high levels of BOD can be overcome by plant phytoremediation. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of phytoremediation of apu wood (Pistia stratiotes L.), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and water bamboo (Equisetum hyemale) on reducing BOD levels in tofu factory wastewater. Conclusion: The results of the statistical test using thetest Dependent T and One Way Anova. The results of statistical tests using T Dependent showed that there was a significant difference before after giving water cabbage plants with p value= 0.035, while the results showed no significant differences before after giving water hyacinth plants with p value= 0.059 and water bamboo plants with p value= 0.074 to decrease the BOD levels of tofu factory wastewater. While the results of thestatistical test One Way Anova showed that there was a significant difference after the administration of water cabbage, water hyacinth and water bamboo plants with p value= 0.022 to the decrease in BOD levels of tofu factory wastewater. The most effective use of plants in reducing BOD levels in tofu factory wastewater is water cabbage, this plant can reduce BOD levels in tofu factory wastewater by 33.26%. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research can be used for tofu factory wastewater treatment by utilizing water cabbage plants with the phytoremediation method

    Analysis of agricultural land carrying capacity and projected food demand

    Background: Cilacap Regency is one of the leading rice-producing regions in Central Java and is widely recognized as a rice granary of the province. This study aims to assess the agricultural land carrying capacity and project future population growth in Cilacap Regency. Method: A quantitative descriptive approach was employed using secondary data sourced from the Cilacap Regency statistical reports for the years 2013–2023. Findings: The analysis reveals that the agricultural land carrying capacity in Cilacap consistently falls under Class 1 each year, indicating the region’s strong ability to achieve rice self-sufficiency. However, population projections for 2033 show that certain districts—namely South Cilacap, Central Cilacap, and North Cilacap—may require an expansion of harvested area to meet future food demand. A key limitation of this study lies in the absence of projected agricultural land carrying capacity for the year 2033. Conclusion: Future research should address this gap to provide a more comprehensive outlook for sustainable food security planning in Cilacap Regency. Novelty/ originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in assessing Cilacap Regency’s agricultural land carrying capacity alongside future population projections, identifying potential food demand challenges, and informing sustainable rice self-sufficiency planning strategies

    Synthesis of silicon carbide (SiC) micro-particles from PCB waste through dry milling as a candidate for microfluidic particles in quenching media

    Background: The increasing demand for electronic devices due to technological advancements has led to a rise in electronic waste, particularly printed circuit boards (PCBs). This study aims to utilize PCB waste, which contains non-metal particles such as silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC), to enhance the thermal conductivity of cooling media. Methods: The research process began with the crushing of PCBs, followed by leaching with 1M HCl for 24 hours. Subsequently, pyrolysis was conducted using argon at 500°C for 30 minutes. The resulting PCB particles were then subjected to dry milling in a planetary ball mill with varying ball-to-powder ratios of 1:10, 1:30, and 1:50 for durations of 10 and 20 hours, using steel balls. The milled particles were characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and particle size analysis (PSA). Findings: XRF analysis revealed that SiO2 was the predominant compound. XRD results indicated significant SiC phase growth in the 1:50 parameter with a 20-hour milling time. PSA results showed the smallest particle size of 627.6 d.nm with a polydispersity index of 0.047 in the 1:10 variable with a 20-hour milling time. Conclusion: The study successfully demonstrates the potential of utilizing PCB waste to produce SiC micro-particles, which can enhance the thermal conductivity of cooling media. This approach not only provides a method for recycling electronic waste but also contributes to the development of more efficient cooling systems. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research introduces an innovative approach to recycling electronic waste by converting PCB waste into valuable SiC micro-particles, offering a novel method for improving cooling media in industrial applications

    Flood risk assessment and regional detailed spatial planning in Lagos State: A remote sensing perspective

    Background: Lagos State, Nigeria, is increasingly confronting flooding as an aftermath of hasty urbanization, climate change, and inefficiency in land-use planning. This paper formally reviewed remote sensing technology application in flood hazard analysis and incorporating it into the Regional Detailed Spatial Planning (RDTR) framework. Methods: A systematic search of 40 peer-reviewed articles (2000–2023) was conducted following PRISMA guidelines to identify and analyze trends and patterns. Remote sensing technologies, including optical images and synthetic aperture radar (SAR), were used to monitor flood dynamics, evaluate vulnerability, and identify flood zones in near real-time. Indicators such as rainfall intensity, elevation, land use, and population density were also assessed. Findings: Although remote sensing provides actionable data for zoning and infrastructure planning in flood-prone areas, its application to RDTR planning is limited by insufficient high-resolution data, technical limitations, and stakeholders' coordination problems. The study also highlights the critical role of geospatial innovations in improving flood resilience and urban planning. Conclusion: Improved data access, technical capacity building, and multi-stakeholder collaboration are essential to address current limitations. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research bridges the gap between flood hazard mapping technologies and detailed spatial planning frameworks. It provides a framework that can guide policymakers and urban planners in Lagos and similar contexts toward sustainable flood risk management and urban development

    Instructional communication as a catalyst for improving student motivation and engagement

    Background: This study examines the instructional communication of mathematics teachers at SMPIT Darul Muqorrobin, considering the students' low mathematics scores that contrast with their notable non-academic achievements. The purpose of this research is to analyze the instructional communication strategies employed by mathematics teachers to enhance the learning interest of seventh and eighth-grade students. The study is grounded in the theory of instructional communication, which emphasizes the teaching methods used by teachers in conveying knowledge to students. Methods: The research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Findings: There are three identified aspects of the teacher's instructional communication strategies: (1) effective teacher communication skills contribute to improved quality of classroom learning, (2) teachers must be adept at overcoming learning barriers, particularly students' weak mental attitudes, in order to foster motivation in learning mathematics, and (3) support from the school plays a crucial role in the learning process, enabling teachers to perform their duties effectively. Conclusion: The teacher's communication capital and teaching skills are essential for ensuring effective instructional communication. Novelty/Originality of this article: Instructional communication is closely related to educational reflection, providing teachers with valuable input for evaluating the quality, skills, and learning barriers within the classroom

    MIE-BIN: Innovation of noodles from Madeira vine leaves (Anredera cordifolia [Ten.] Steenis) as a strategy for functional food diversification in supporting balanced nutrition fulfillment

    Background: In Indonesia, the nutritional situation is still concerning with the prevalence of stunting in children under five reaching 30.8%. Indonesia's rich biodiversity, especially local plants such as binahong (Anredera cordifolia [Ten.] Steenis) offers great potential as an innovative solution to overcome nutritional problems. This research focuses on developing binahong-based noodles (MIE-BIN) as a quality local food diversification strategy with the aim of making a real contribution to fulfilling balanced nutrition and supporting national food security through a comprehensive approach that combines aspects of nutrition, food technology, and local plant potential.  Methods: This research was conducted through a descriptive analytical literature review with a qualitative approach. This study employed a systematic literature search of primary sources (scientific journals, conference proceedings, research reports, and reference books) and secondary sources (official statistics, policy documents, and government publications) from 2014–2024 to analyze the potential of binahong leaves as a noodle ingredient. Findings: The findings show that Binahong Noodles (MIE-BIN) have superior nutritional, textural, sensory, and functional properties compared to conventional noodles, offering high protein, fiber, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds with significant health benefits, while also presenting strong potential for diversification, food security, and sustainable community nutrition. Conclusion: This innovation shows significant potential in supporting metabolic health through bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and saponins that can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Novelty/Originality of this article: Through modern food technology and innovative approaches, MIE-BIN not only offers solutions for local food diversification, but also has the potential to become a strategic instrument in nutritional interventions, utilization of local resources, and improving the quality of life of the community

    Text and context in interpreting philosophical traditions: Global and islamic perspectives

    Background: The interpretation of texts in philosophical studies reflects an epistemological dynamic that extends beyond mere literal meaning, encompassing the historical, social, and cultural contexts in which texts are situated. This complexity underscores the evolving nature of textual meaning across different eras and intellectual traditions. Methods: This study employs a comparative approach to analyze interpretive methodologies within Western and Islamic schools of philosophy. It focuses on selected hermeneutical frameworks to explore how texts are reinterpreted in relation to changing historical and cultural contexts. Findings: In Western hermeneutics, approaches such as Gadamer’s fusion of horizons and Ricoeur’s narrative symbolism highlight the active interplay between the reader and the text. These perspectives emphasize meaning as a dialogical process shaped by both historical consciousness and linguistic structures. In contrast, the Islamic tradition offers interpretive models like Fazlur Rahman’s double movement, Abdullah Saeed’s contextual hermeneutics, and Mulla Sadra’s tafsir hikmah (philosophical exegesis), which strive to reinterpret revelation within the frameworks of modernity, spirituality, and rationality. These methods reflect an ongoing engagement with divine texts in light of contemporary challenges. Conclusion: The comparison reveals that both Western and Islamic philosophical traditions recognize the critical role of context in the process of textual interpretation. However, they are grounded in distinct theological assumptions and methodological orientations, which shape their respective hermeneutical outcomes. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study contributes to the field by bridging philosophical hermeneutics from two major intellectual traditions—Western and Islamic—demonstrating their convergences in contextual sensitivity while highlighting their foundational differences. It offers a nuanced understanding of how meaning is negotiated across cultural and religious boundaries

    Community behavior in dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) mosquito breeding site eradication efforts

    Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has spread rapidly. It is widely distributed across tropical regions, with local risk variations influenced by rainfall, temperature, and urbanization. The incidence of dengue has increased dramatically worldwide over the past few decades. Methods: This research employs a descriptive design with the use of accidental sampling as the sampling technique. Findings: Most people in the Public Health Center area have basic knowledge about the dangers of DHF and the risk factors for its transmission. However, there is variation in the level of understanding, with some individuals being less aware of the connection between mosquito breeding sites and the risk of DHF. Conclusion: The community has a good level of knowledge and a positive attitude, but demonstrates poor levels of action. It is recommended that community members actively participate in DHF Mosquito Breeding Site Eradication/Pemberantasan Sarang Nyamuk Demam Berdarah (PSN DBD) efforts, as respondents still show inadequate preventive actions. As for the Mandai Public Health Center, it is advised to enhance educational outreach regarding the implementation of DHF mosquito breeding site eradication activities. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this research lies in providing an overview of community behavior in the eradication of dengue mosquito breeding sites. It includes an assessment of technology-based behavioral adaptations and an analysis of community-based behavior along with social engagement. The study also examines the influence of social and economic factors on DHF mosquito breeding site eradication practices, evaluates various counseling and educational methods, and investigates long-term behavioral changes and their impacts. Additionally, it explores the use of geospatial data for identifying high-risk areas and assesses community satisfaction and motivation related to DHF mosquito breeding site eradication efforts

    Sustainable strategies for managing domestic plastic waste in coastal communities

    Background: Plastic waste degrades into microplastics, contaminating marine biota and posing risks to human health and ecosystems. This research focuses on the sustainability challenges of plastic waste in coastal communities, particularly in Cirebon Regency, aiming to develop effective strategies for managing domestic plastic waste to safeguard marine resources and human health. Methods: This research employs a quantitative mixed-methods approach, utilizing questionnaires for data collection from salt farming areas in Cirebon Regency. A SWOT analysis identifies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for effective plastic waste management strategies. Findings: The strategy for managing domestic plastic waste involves collaboration among various stakeholders, community empowerment, education, the development of ecotourism, the addition of waste management facilities, and the optimization of citizen participation to maintain cleanliness and reduce environmental impact. Conclusion: The strategy includes educating the community on environmental issues, empowering through waste management initiatives, enhancing mangrove ecotourism, and improving waste collection infrastructure and frequency. Novelty/Originality of this Study:  The strategy emphasizes community education, waste empowerment initiatives, ecotourism development, and enhanced waste management infrastructure to promote environmental sustainability
