Exploring the environmental and social impacts of shrimp farming: A literature review in the Southern Coastal Region of Java
Background: Shrimp farming in the southern coastal areas of Java has expanded rapidly due to increasing global demand, contributing significantly to local economic growth. However, this development has generated ecological degradation and social inequality, including water pollution, mangrove loss, and uneven resource distribution. Addressing these challenges requires balancing economic benefits with environmental and social sustainability. Methods: This study employed a qualitative literature review, analyzing five scientific sources on the impacts of shrimp farming on ecotourism, water quality, mangrove ecosystems, and socioeconomic conditions in Bantul, Kulon Progo, and Kebumen Regencies. Results: The analysis reveals that while shrimp farming enhances local incomes and can support ecotourism, unmanaged practices lead to ecosystem damage, water pollution, and heightened social disparities. Integrated management combining eco-friendly technologies, mangrove rehabilitation, waste treatment, and community empowerment is essential for sustainable development. Conclusion: Sustainable shrimp farming in Java’s coastal regions requires strict zoning, continuous monitoring, and policies that integrate environmental protection with community participation. Long-term development must prioritize economic productivity without sacrificing coastal ecosystem integrity. Strategies to overcome the declining trend of young farmers: A comprehensive review of agricultural development issues
Background: Agricultural production stands as the third-largest sector in Indonesia, yet the presence of young farmers, crucial for sustainable agricultural practices and food security, lags behind ideal proportions. Despite comprising 52% of the population, young people's engagement in farming falls short at approximately 30%. Methods: This paper delves into the underlying reasons behind this crisis, utilizing secondary data analysis from BPS Indonesia and employing documentary analysis methodology. Findings: The study reveals that the declining participation of Indonesian youth in agriculture is driven by intertwined structural, economic, and sociocultural barriers, necessitating a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder strategy to ensure generational renewal and long-term food security. Conclusion: The paper provides suggestions for further research to address this pressing issue and pave the way for a rejuvenated generation of farmers essential for Indonesia's agricultural future. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research offers a novel perspective by not only identifying challenges but also providing recommendations to revitalize youth engagement in agriculture, ensuring the sector’s long-term sustainability
Moderation effect analysis of assimilator-explorer cognitive style in the relationship between big five personality and innovative work behavior
Background: This research is aim to see the moderate effect of assimilator-explrorer cognitive styles on the relationship between big five personality and innovative work behavior. Methods: This quantitative study utilized a non-probability convenience sampling method involving 125 employees from a shipbuilding manufacturing company. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, One-Way ANOVA, and a simple regression test with the PROCESS macro by Hayes to examine the moderating effect. Findings: Effect of moderation is considered due to inconsistent relationship between the big five personality and innovative work behavior. Conclusion: The main results of this study were processed using regression test with a PROCESS macro from Hayes (2013) and accompanied by additional results that is correlation between variables and demography analysis. Four dimension of big five personality are significantly correlated with innovative work behavior, 1 dimension of big five personality is significantly correlated with assimilator-explorer cognitive style, and there is no correlation between assimilator-explorer cognitive style and innovative work behavior. Based on demography analysis, there is difference score on assimilator-explorer cognitive style by job tenure, work unit and education. Based on the regression test, there is moderation effect of assimilator-explorer cognitive style on neuroticism dimension personality and innovative work behavior F(3,121)=4.76, R²=0.03, b=-0.16, t(121)=-2.18 (p <0.05). Novelty/Originality of this article: This study is different from previous studies. Therefore, further research is strongly encouraged to understand the role of cognitive-asimilator-explorer style in moderating the five major personalities and innovative work behaviors
Innovative utilization of chicken feet bones (Gallus gallus domesticus) and mung beans (Vigna radiata) in crackers: A sustainable nutritional approach to combat childhood malnutrition
Background: Malnutrition leads to weakened immunity, making children more susceptible to infectious diseases and affecting future generations if not promptly addressed. Chicken feet bones (Gallus gallus domesticus) are a food waste product rich in calcium, while mung beans (Vigna radiata) are high in vitamins and minerals, making them potential sources of additional nutrition. This study aims to investigate the processing of Hi-C Crackers using chicken feet bones and mung beans, analyze its macronutrient content qualitatively, and determine its calcium content qualitatively. Methods: This experimental research involved processing Hi-C Crackers and analyzing their nutritional composition qualitatively. Findings: Hi-C Crackers were successfully processed using a 2:1 ratio of chicken feet bones to mung beans. The macronutrient content was determined using qualitative reagent tests: Lugol's iodine test for carbohydrates (blue-black color), Biuret test for protein (purple color), and Benedict’s test for glucose (greenish-blue color). Calcium content was confirmed using ammonium oxalate and acetic acid reagents, producing a brownish-white precipitate. Conclusion: Hi-C Crackers is a nutritious snack with essential macronutrients and calcium. Novelty: This research introduces a new food innovation utilizing commonly discarded ingredients to combat malnutrition
FASOLA (farming solution application): Integrating IoT innovation in vertical farming to support food security and economic sustainability
Background: Food security is a crucial aspect in human survival. The increasing population poses a major challenge for Indonesia to meet food demand and achieve self-sufficiency. To support the economy and sustainable agriculture, it is necessary to increase food productivity through a land-efficient system. Renewable technologies are needed to help farmers optimize the use of limited land for efficient, sustainable, and adaptable agricultural activities in various regions, especially in urban areas. Methods: The Fasola application was developed using a prototype design methodology that includes four main stages: user needs analysis, visual design (wireframe and mockup), IoT technology development and integration, and user test-based evaluation and revision. This approach aims to create innovative and user-friendly solutions to support productivity and sustainability of IoT-based vertical farming. Findings: Fasola is an IoT-based application that supports vertical farming in urban areas to improve the efficiency and sustainability of food production. Its features allow farmers to monitor the planting environment, manage irrigation and energy, and market their crops digitally. The application increases productivity, reduces operational cost, and strengthens local food security. With the support of education and community approaches, Fasola contributes to environmentally friendly agriculture and the transition to a green economy. Conclusion: Fasola (Farming Solution Application) is an appropriate technological innovation in the digital era that supports food security and a sustainable economy. Its features help optimize the use of resources, reduce agricultural waste, and increase production efficiency, allowing farmers to manage the entire farming process in one integrated platform. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study introduce an IoT based application innovation that provides practical support for modern agriculture on limited land. This application integrates hydroponic farming and vertical farming through advanced features, offering a sustainable system that can contribute to food security
BLUEGENIC: Transforming marine plastic waste through AI drone surveillance as a solution for sustainable energy and maritime security
Background: The issue of marine plastic waste has become a tangible threat to the sustainability of marine ecosystems and national maritime security. This study aims to develop BLUEGENIC, a technology-based innovation that integrates marine surveillance using artificial intelligence (AI)-powered drones with the conversion of plastic waste into alternative fuel. Methods: The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach through several stages, including needs analysis, system design, concept testing, and validation of implementation potential. Findings: The results indicate that the routine deployment of AI drones in priority maritime areas can map between 50–200 tons of marine plastic waste annually. The collected waste is then processed using the pyrolysis method, capable of producing 13,000–14,000 liters of alternative fuel per month from approximately 16.7 tons of plastic. In addition to contributing to waste reduction and clean energy transition, BLUEGENIC engages the younger maritime generation in research, education, and technological operations. Conclusion: The program also demonstrates economic potential through a blue economy approach and offers opportunities for cross-sectoral collaboration. This study emphasizes the importance of regulatory support and stakeholder synergy in the implementation of BLUEGENIC. Marketing strategy with marketing intelligence to increase the market share of Indonesian Sharia Banks
Background: With the potential market share as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, the existence of Indonesian Sharia Bank/Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) in Indonesia has indeed increased the development of Islamic banking, but has not been able to keep up with the prevalence of conventional bank market share so that both external and internal marketing strategies are needed with the utilization of marketing intelligence. This study aims to identify the characteristics of BSI customers by analyzing processes and performance, including comparing strengths and weaknesses with conventional banks so as to obtain marketing strategies to increase BSI market share. Methods This research is descriptive with a qualitative approach to the data obtained from interviews, documentation, and analysis of research subjects. Findings: The results show that the characteristics of BSI customers are young urban people with higher education and middle to upper economic levels. In BSI's marketing process and performance, the utilization of marketing intelligence is likened to an intelligence cycle, although it is not optimal because it still depends on data from external research companies. BSI has also not optimally implemented Blue Ocean Strategy that utilizes product uniqueness and tends to conduct Red Ocean Strategy to dominate the conventional bank market in increasing market share. Conclusion: The recommended marketing strategies include utilizing product uniqueness to create new markets, developing user-friendly transaction technology and digital platforms, strengthening positioning and brand awareness through Islamic ecosystem-based marketing, and intensifying digital marketing as a brand presence that increases public trust. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty aspect refers to the new or innovative elements in a research study that distinguish it from previous work. It includes unique contributions, new methods, or findings that have not been explored before in the field
An ecosystem approach to circular economy implementation and efficiency: A global comparative analysis
Background: This study examines Indonesia’s adoption of circular-economy (CE) principles through an ecosystem lens and benchmarks national progress against leading global models. Method: Drawing on a review of academic articles, policy reports, and case studies, nine Indonesian initiatives are cataloged, ranging from Mycotech Lab’s biowaste valorization to PT Pertamina’s circular-carbon programs and community-driven collaborations like LTKL. Findings: These examples demonstrate localized successes in waste reduction, resource recirculation, and stakeholder engagement, yet they remain largely sector-specific and pilot-scale. In contrast, regions such as the European Union, China, and Finland operate under comprehensive, economy-wide frameworks with binding targets, dedicated financing mechanisms, and mandatory extended-producer-responsibility schemes. Quantitative metrics from Indonesian projects show material savings (e.g., 2,200 tons of plastic avoided by BulkSource) and emission reductions (e.g., 352,000 ton CO₂eq cut by Pertamina). Meanwhile, qualitative analysis highlights enabling factors, including multi-stakeholder collaboration and eco-innovation; as well as persistent barriers such as policy fragmentation, limited funding, and uneven data availability. A cross-case synthesis shows the absence of harmonized indicators and national coordination, which hinders scaling and aggregation of sectoral gains into systemic impact. Conclusion: It is concluded that Indonesia’s transition to a mature CE requires the establishment of a coherent national roadmap with clear targets, robust monitoring, and inclusive governance structures that integrate informal and rural actors. Strengthening financial instruments, such as green bonds and blended-finance vehicles, and embedding circular criteria in public procurement will be critical to mobilizing investment and promoting widespread adoption. By aligning policy, finance, and community engagement, progress toward systemic circularity can be accelerated. Novelty/Originality of this Article: This study uniquely integrates ecosystem-based evaluation with quantitative and policy-level benchmarking to propose a strategic roadmap for Indonesia’s systemic CE transition
Value-added analysis of tuna fish floss: A case study of IKM Raja Bawang in supporting food security
Background: Agroindustry is one of the strategic solutions in the development of fishery products, as it not only increases fishery yields but also contributes to improving income and strengthening the regional economy. Additionally, processing fish into value-added products, such as shredded tuna, can support food security through the diversification of processed products with longer shelf life and preserved nutritional value. This study aims to analyze the added value of processing tuna into shredded fish and its contribution to food security. Method: The research location was determined puIDRosive, based on the consideration that Raja Bawang IKM is one of the growing agro-industrial businesses producing shredded tuna in Palu City. Respondents were also selected puIDRosively through direct interviews with 1 leader/owner of Raja Bawang IKM, 1 deputy leader, and 4 employees. Thus, the total number of respondents was 6 people who had the competence to provide information related to the business and production of shredded fish. The data used in this study include both primary and secondary data. Value-added analysis was conducted using the Hayami method to determine output value, added value, profit, and labor contribution. Findings: The results show that the processing of tuna into shredded fish at Raja Bawang IKM generates an added value of IDR 40,163/kg with an added value ratio of 37.61%. The resulting profit reached IDR 16,163/kg with a profit rate of 40.24%. Conclusion: The findings indicate that processing tuna into shredded tuna not only provides economic benefits to business actors but also supports food security by supplying processed fish products with high nutritional value and longer shelf life. Novelty/Originality of This Article: It highlights the dual impact of value-added processing in enhancing business profitability and supporting local food security—an area that has received limited attention in prior studies, particularly in the context of micro-scale industries
The eschatological traces in the cult of maharsi markandeya an interpretation of samādhi at Pura Pucak Payogan, Bali
Background: This study explores the eschatological dimensions embedded in the veneration of Maharsi Markandeya at Pura Pucak Payogan Bali, particularly through the interpretation of his samādhi (spiritual absorption) as a culmination of sacred life and transcendence. The aim is to analyze how the notion of moksha (liberation) is ritualized, spatialized, and narrated through cultic practices and collective memory within Balinese Hindu communities. Previous studies on Balinese religiosity have primarily focused on ritual systems, ancestral worship, and temple networks, but little attention has been paid to eschatological interpretations of samādhi shrines as sites of spiritual transcendence. Methods: This article adopts a qualitative approach using ethnographic fieldwork, textual interpretation of Hindu philosophical sources (particularly Vedānta and Yoga Sūtra), and spatial-symbolic analysis of the temple architecture and rituals associated with Pura Pucak Payogan. Findings: The findings reveal that Maharsi Markandeya’s samādhi is perceived not merely as a memorial site but as an eschatological axis where the duality between life and death dissolves. This perception is enacted through pilgrimage practices, offerings, and narratives that position the site as a symbolic gateway to liberation. The integration of eschatological doctrine into living religious practices reflects a dynamic fusion of textual philosophy and local ontology. Conclusion: The study concludes that Pura Pucak Payogan functions as a liminal sacred space encoding the ideal of divine union, and that the cult of Maharsi Markandeya offers a living model of eschatological embodiment in the Hindu-Balinese tradition. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in its interdisciplinary interpretation of samādhi as an eschatological site and in highlighting the fusion of theological vision with ritual practice in contemporary Balinese spirituality
