Integrating disaster risk into economic valuation of strategic infrastructure: A case study of Yogyakarta International Airport under tsunami threat
Background: In response to the increasing frequency of natural disasters and the urgency of climate adaptation, this study assesses the potential economic losses at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), a key National Strategic Project/Proyek Strategis Nasional (PSN) in Indonesia. Despite its critical role in promoting regional connectivity and economic growth, YIA is located in a high-risk seismic and tsunami-prone zone along the Indian Ocean. Methods: Using the Total Economic Value (TEV) framework, this research estimates direct and indirect losses resulting from a hypothetical disaster scenario, including waterlogging impacts on runways and aprons. The analysis integrates hazard exposure data, infrastructure vulnerability, and sectoral economic linkages, encompassing damage to assets, disruptions to tourism, and income loss during the recovery phase. Findings: Findings reveal that a single severe disaster could result in 429,746,360,380 rupiah losses, with cascading effects on local livelihoods and regional mobility. The study underscores the need for ex-ante disaster risk integration in infrastructure investment planning, contributing to the development of resilient and sustainable airport systems under Indonesia’s long-term disaster risk reduction framework. Conclusion: This study concludes that Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is highly vulnerable to tsunami hazards, with potential for extensive infrastructure damage and significant direct and indirect economic losses, underscoring the urgent need to integrate disaster risk reduction into the planning and operation of critical infrastructure. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article lies in its application of the Total Economic Value (TEV) framework combined with hazard exposure analysis to comprehensively estimate both direct and indirect economic losses of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) as a National Strategic Project (PSN) in a tsunami-prone area
The impact of biodiesel policy on the availability of cooking oil: An analysis of sustainable food strategies
Background: Indonesia's biodiesel policy has developed rapidly as a government strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance the domestic added value of palm oil commodities. A growing body of literature suggests that while biodiesel policies can support national energy security and economic growth, they also create potential risks for food security and environmental sustainability. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of Indonesia’s mandatory biodiesel policy on the availability of cooking oil, a staple food commodity, in the context of sustainable food strategies. Methods: This research employs a descriptive-qualitative approach using a systematic literature review. Data were collected from published studies, government documents, and statistical reports related to biodiesel policy, crude palm oil allocation, and the food supply chain in Indonesia. The analysis focuses on connecting empirical evidence with the four pillars of food security and principles of environmental and social sustainability. Findings: The findings indicate that increased allocation of crude palm oil (CPO) for biodiesel production, primarily incentivized by government subsidies, has decreased the supply available for domestic food consumption. This has led to cooking oil shortages and price surges across several regions in Indonesia. Furthermore, the expansion of oil palm plantations to satisfy biodiesel industry demands has contributed to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and social conflicts involving local communities. Conclusion: The principal conclusion from this study underscores the urgency for a holistic and integrative energy policy reformulation that balances the needs of energy independence, food security, environmental sustainability, and social justice. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article uniquely integrates the analysis of biodiesel policy impacts on food availability with overarching sustainable development frameworks in Indonesia. The study offers new insights by linking policy analysis with food security pillars and sustainability principles, and provides actionable recommendations for policy enhancements that have not been thoroughly explored in previous research
The impact of climate anxiety on individuals’ acceptance of conservation policy
Background: Climate change is an impending threat that can lead to negative emotional responses. One of these responses is climate anxiety, which is characterized by chronic worry about the future and can be both adaptive and maladaptive. Previous literature states that climate anxiety can be adaptive and a helpful coping mechanism, as it can lead to environmental action. However, previous research does not relate this phenomenon to conservation policy. Thus, this paper aims to explore the impact of climate change anxiety on individuals’ acceptance of conservation policy. Methods: This paper uses reflexive thematic analysis to analyze journal articles and policy briefs related to the topic. This entails coding each source and identifying the main themes found in the data to determine patterns and identify key themes in the chosen sources. Findings: The findings state that ecosystem conservation is crucial and leads to nuanced emotional responses when climate change is not mitigated. Moreover, environmental action is found to be a coping mechanism that alleviates climate anxiety due to its social aspect. Finally, individuals play a significant role in conservation policy, yet their support is contingent on their trust in the government. Conclusion: Climate anxiety can lead to environmental action in adaptive coping and can increase the likelihood of support for conservation policies if it is deemed effective. Novelty/Originality of this article: This paper concentrates on conservation policies’ possible support within individuals afflicted with climate anxiety if it helps them alleviate their negative affect, and is an effortful but low-cost effort
Linking adaptive social protection and multi-scale conservation: Policy integration pathways for climate-resilient communities
Background: Indonesia faces escalating climate-induced disasters that exacerbate both environmental degradation and social vulnerability. While Adaptive Social Protection (ASP) has emerged globally as a framework integrating Social Protection (SP), Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) to strengthen household resilience, it remains primarily socio-economic in focus and seldom incorporates ecological considerations. This study conceptualizes an ASP–conservation integration framework designed to link social protection and multi-scale conservation within Indonesia’s policy architecture. Methods: Using a qualitative, conceptual approach based on literature synthesis and policy analysis, the research identifies fragmentation across key ministries, Social Affairs, Environment, Finance, Disaster Management, and Meteorology, each addressing elements of resilience in isolation. Findings: The proposed framework introduces four interlinked dimensions: policy and institutional integration, multi-scale governance and community interface, financing and sustainability mechanisms, and socio-ecological framing and system dynamics. These dimensions collectively position ASP as a meta-framework for socio-ecological resilience that aligns institutions, empowers communities, and embeds sustainability within national adaptation strategies. The paper further proposes a phased governance roadmap, short-term (2025–2027) pilot coordination and data integration, medium-term (2028–2030) policy institutionalization and financing innovation, and long-term (2030+) system-wide embedding of ASP into climate-resilient development. The findings contribute to policy integration theory by framing ASP as a boundary-spanning governance mechanism that bridges sectoral silos and fosters adaptive learning. Conclusion: Ultimately, institutionalizing ASP as an integrated socio-ecological system would enable Indonesia to advance its Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement commitments while enhancing the resilience of both communities and ecosystems. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty lies in conceptualizing ASP–conservation integration as a meta-framework for socio-ecological resilience and proposing a phased governance roadmap that bridges institutional fragmentation within Indonesia’s policy system
Innovation of a modular microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) reactor based on coconut shell biochar with IoT monitoring system integration for the conversion of non-B3 plastic into alternative bio-fuels
Background: Indonesia produces more than 12.3 million tons of plastic waste each year, but only a mere 14% is recycled, leading to serious environmental concerns. On a global scale, solid waste totals 2.3 billion tons annually, with merely 61% being properly managed. This situation underscores the pressing demand for sustainable and effective technologies for handling plastic waste. Traditional pyrolysis is widely utilized but struggles with high energy requirements, needing temperatures between 700-900 °C, inconsistent heat distribution, and overall low efficiency in the process. Methods: This research introduces a Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis (MAP) reactor that utilizes KOH-activated coconut shell biochar as a microwave absorber. It achieves a surface area greater than 800 m²/g, enabling effective absorption of 2.45 GHz microwaves. Non-toxic plastics like HDPE and PP are subjected to pre-treatment before undergoing MAP processing at temperatures of 450-600 °C for a duration of 10 minutes. An Internet of Things (IoT) system facilitates real-time monitoring of temperature, pressure, and flow rate to maintain precise control throughout the process. Findings: Results from experiments and a review of existing literature indicate that MAP is capable of transforming plastics into 70% bio-oil, 10% syngas, and 20% biochar, with energy consumption only at 0.8-1.2 kWh/kg—30-40% less than what traditional pyrolysis requires. The activation energy for coconut shell biochar drops significantly to 24.5 kJ/mol, compared to 84.2 kJ/mol found in conventional systems, showing better efficiency in volumetric heating. MAP has the potential to cut down plastic pollution by as much as 65% while generating bio-oil as an alternative fuel source, aiding the implementation of a circular economy and supporting Sustainable Development Goals 9, 12, and 13. Conclusion: MAP demonstrates a highly energy-efficient and scalable alternative for plastic waste valorization, reducing environmental pollution while generating useful byproducts and supporting sustainable development objectives. Novelty/Originality of this article: The research stands out by integrating KOH-activated coconut shell biochar with IoT-enabled real-time monitoring and an energy-efficient MAP method, providing a sustainable approach for recovering value from plastic waste beyond traditional pyrolysis
Sustainability analysis of spring water utilization as a community-based clean water supply system in rural areas
Background: This study aims to assess the sustainability of utilizing spring water as a clean water supply system (WSS) in Truko Hamlet, Surokonto Kulon Village, Kendal Regency. Parikesit Spring serves as the primary source of clean water for the village community and plays a crucial role in meeting daily needs. By integrating a community-based approach through the Community-Based Water Supply and Sanitation Program/Penyediaan Air Minum dan Sanitasi Berbasis Masyarakat (PAMSIMAS), water resource management is carried out independently and sustainably. Method: The research method follows a sustainability framework for WSS, encompassing social, financial, institutional, environmental, and technical aspects. Data collection involved laboratory water quality analysis and in-depth interviews with eight key respondents, including PAMSIMAS managers and community users. Environmental services provided by the spring were also identified. Findings: The findings indicate that the WSS in this village is able to meet the community’s clean water needs in terms of quantity, quality, and continuity, despite challenges such as sedimentation during heavy rains and limited availability of backup pumps. High community participation in water management and the sustainability of PAMSIMAS services are key points supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, “Clean Water and Sanitation for All.” Conclusion: For further sustainability, recommendations include improving water quality, strengthening the organizational structure, and enhancing technical facilities. A comprehensive analysis of resilience processes in three MSMEs responding to accelerated digital transformation and operational challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic
Background: This study focuses on the resilience of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Tanjung Duren Utara, West Jakarta, in facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the acceleration of digitalization. Methods: This study employs a qualitative and descriptive approach, focusing on three local MSMEs: Bakso Malang, Ayam Tulang Lunak 3 Saudara Cemara, and Mie Ayam Barokah. Through this approach, the research aims to identify and analyze the resilience processes demonstrated by MSMEs during the pandemic. Findings: The findings reveal that MSMEs undergo four stages of resilience: surrender, survival, recovery, and rapid growth. These stages involve adjustments to economic and psychological pressures, operational efficiency strategies, utilization of online delivery services, innovations in online marketing and customer service, and adaptation to digital technology. These findings are significant in highlighting how social support, personal strength, and the ability to act contribute to the success of MSMEs in facing the pandemic. Conclusion: Given the strategic role of MSMEs in the national economy, particularly in terms of labor absorption and contribution to the Gross Domestic Product, an analysis of their adaptation in this crisis situation is essential. Novelty/Originality of this article: The study underscores the importance of adaptation, innovation, and community support in building business resilience amidst uncertainty and challenges, demonstrating effective social functioning during the pandemic and avoiding social maladaptation
Digital innovation and social adaptation in urban flood risk reduction: A study on community-based coping strategies
Background: Flooding in the capital city of DKI Jakarta is still a serious problem that has a broad impact on society. Rapid urbanization, suboptimal drainage systems, and climate change contribute to the increasing frequency and impact of flooding. Flooding not only causes economic losses, but also impacts on health, loss of livelihoods, agriculture and livestock sectors, disruption to education, and damage to public and private infrastructure, effective strategies are needed to increase community resilience in the face of these disasters. Methods: This study used a methodological approach related to coping strategies in the face of flooding. The theory of coping strategies developed by Lazarus & Folkman (1984) is used as the basis of analysis to understand how communities can adapt and respond to floods. In addition, a study of digital platforms such as petabencana.id was conducted to see the role of technology in improving community preparedness. Findings: The results show that communities use various copingstrategies in dealing with floods, both those that focus on problem-focused coping and those that focus on emotion-focused coping. Technology-based approaches, such as the use of petabencana.id, allow communities to share information in real-time, improve coordination in emergency response, and speed up decision-making in disaster situations. This research also highlights the importance of a combination of proactive and reactive coping strategies in dealing with floods. In addition, utilizing digital technology in disaster mitigation can increase the effectiveness of emergency response efforts and strengthen community engagement. Conclusion: This study confirms that the application of appropriate coping strategies, supported by technology and multi-stakeholder collaboration, can help communities deal more effectively with the impacts of flooding. Novelty/Originality of this article: Increasing education on coping strategies, optimizing the use of information technology, and strengthening social networks are important steps in flood mitigation and management in Jakarta
Strategies for strengthening partnerships in circular economy-based plastic waste management
Background: Asian nations like China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam account for 60% of the estimated 4.8–12.7 million metric tons of marine plastic trash produced year worldwide. The majority of the marine trash off the north coast of Jakarta is made of plastic, at 59%. Because it offers financial advantages and fosters partner collaboration, the circular economy is a novel strategy for managing plastic trash. Regretfully, there remains a dearth of information regarding the entities engaged in the management of plastic garbage in Central Jakarta. In light of a circular economy, this research attempts to create methods for bolstering collaborations in the management of plastic trash. Methods: In this study, a hybrid strategy using a quantitative approach was employed. The best and most practical type of partnership in Central Jakarta was identified through the use of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in this study. Findings: The study's findings indicate that the greatest plan for Central Jakarta is a collaboration with the government since it promotes both well-managed plastic waste management and economic gains. Conclusion: The best partnership model based on AHP analysis is the Government-Private sector partnership. This form of partnership can drive increased economic benefits and improve the performance of plastic waste management. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study integrates a circular economy approach with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the most effective partnership model for plastic waste management in Central Jakarta
ORUBEEX WRAP: Innovation in food packaging based on beeswax and corn husk waste (Zea mays L.) as an eco-friendly solution
Background: The urgent issue of plastic waste has driven innovation in eco-friendly packaging. ORUBEEX WRAP emerges as a solution by utilizing beeswax and corn husk waste (Zea mays L.) to replace single-use plastic packaging. Beeswax is chosen for its biodegradable, reusable, and antimicrobial properties, while corn husk waste is used as a filler to enhance mechanical strength and flexibility. This innovation not only reduces environmental impact but also supports the circular economy by transforming agricultural waste into value-added products. Methods: This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach, collecting and analyzing data from literature studies, scientific journals, and trusted sources related to beeswax, corn husk waste, and eco-friendly packaging. The writing process includes data collection, analysis of raw material potential, and evaluation of the environmental and economic impacts of ORUBEEX WRAP. Findings: ORUBEEX WRAP offers key advantages as a biodegradable and reusable packaging solution that can reduce plastic waste. The antimicrobial properties of beeswax help extend food shelf life, while the utilization of corn husk waste provides economic value to farmers. However, the product faces limitations in mechanical durability and application to wet or oily foods, as well as relatively high initial production costs. Conclusion: ORUBEEX WRAP is a sustainable innovation combining the benefits of beeswax and corn husk waste to reduce reliance on single-use plastics. Despite technical and economic challenges, the product holds significant potential to promote eco-friendly practices and the circular economy. Novelty/Originality of this article: The originality of ORUBEEX WRAP lies in its innovative combination of beeswax and corn husk waste, which has not been extensively explored in the food packaging industry.
