Analysis of scrubber technology use to control SO2 emission in incinerators as a sustainable solution in plastic waste processing
Background: The use of wet scrubbers and dry scrubbers in incinerators using activated carbon and zeolite adsorbents is applied to control SO₂ emissions, serving as environmentally friendly waste processing tools. Methods: The principle of this test is that the exhaust gas from burning plastic waste with an incinerator is washed in a wet scrubber using water. Any remaining gas emissions are absorbed by zeolite and activated carbon through a dry scrubber. Testing of SO₂ exhaust gas emission concentrations is carried out on the incinerator, wet scrubber, and final chimney. Findings: The SO₂ exhaust gas concentration in incinerator combustion was 0.9685 mg/Nm³, the concentration after scrubbing using a wet scrubber was 0.1389 mg/Nm³, and the concentration after scrubbing using a wet scrubber and dry scrubber was 0 mg/Nm³. Conclusion: The use of a wet scrubber is effective in reducing SO₂ exhaust gas emission concentrations. The use of a dry scrubber is also effective in further reducing SO₂ exhaust gas emissions to zero. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in the combined application of wet and dry scrubbers with activated carbon and zeolite to achieve complete elimination of SO₂ emissions from plastic waste incineration, demonstrating a practical environmentally friendly approach
The voice of #SaveRajaAmpat: Digital movements against nickel mining
Background: The movement to against nickel mining in Raja Ampat was raised in early July 2025. The movement began with a post from Greenpeace Indonesia who were kicked out by security personnels when they protested against nickel mining in Raja Ampat in the middle of an event attended by industry professionals, government officials, experts, and representatives from various countries. This resulted in the digital community joining in to voice their opposition to Raja Ampat with the hashtag #SaveRajaAmpat. This research presents the circumstances that led the digital community to engage in the #SaveRajaAmpat campaign on social media and examines the effectiveness of social media campaigns. Methods: Using qualitative methods with a netnographic approach. The author used secondary data from Greenpeace Indonesia, organizational documents, news articles, and posts by X accounts about Raja Ampat. Findings: The digital community against nickel mining in Raja Ampat due to environmental concerns; frustration and disappointment with the state, government & oligarchy; Solidarity with the Papuan people; a spirit of resistance towards capitalism and a desire for tourism & to enjoy the natural beauty of Raja Ampat. However, the movement on social media was short-lived and faded due to minor victories achieved through the revocation of several companies permits and distraction by other issues. Conclusion: Social movement through social media are less effective, therefore it is necessary to unite social media movements and direct action with the spirit of disappointment towards the state and a spirit of resistance against capitalism so that the movement can be sustained. Novelty/Originality of this article: This change explains the various motivations of the digital community to engage in activism and explains why digital movements are less effective
One-pot catalytic conversion of glucose to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over NiO-modified ZSM-5 zeolites: Effects of reaction temperature and solvent ratio
Background: 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has gained increasing attention as a key bio-based intermediate for the production of polyethylene furanoate (PEF) and other sustainable polyesters, offering a viable alternative to fossil-derived monomers. Although FDCA is conventionally produced via oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), direct one-pot conversion of glucose remains challenging due to the requirement for integrated catalytic functions and the strong influence of reaction conditions. Hierarchical zeolites modified with transition-metal oxides are promising for one-pot glucose-to-FDCA conversion; however, the effects of reaction temperature and solvent composition have not been systematically evaluated and are examined here using hierarchical ZSM-5, NiO-modified ZSM-5, and NiO catalysts. Methods: Hierarchical ZSM-5 was synthesized via a dual-template method and modified with NiO through an impregnation–spray technique to introduce redox-active sites. The catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen physisorption, and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray to establish correlations between structural, compositional, and textural properties and catalytic performance. Catalytic reactions were conducted at varying temperatures using a γ-valerolactone–water solvent system with different volume ratios. Findings: NiO-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 exhibited superior catalytic performance compared to the parent zeolite and NiO, achieving a maximum FDCA yield of 2.36% at 150 °C with an optimal γ-valerolactone–water ratio of 1:1. Higher FDCA yield over NiO-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 reflects the combined effects of hierarchical porosity, NiO species, reaction temperature, and solvent ratio. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that NiO-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 can promote one-pot glucose-to-FDCA conversion, with reaction temperature and solvent ratio identified as key parameters for performance optimization. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a systematic assessment of the effects of reaction temperature and γ-valerolactone–water solvent ratio on FDCA formation over NiO-modified hierarchical ZSM-5 in a one-pot glucose conversion system, establishing catalyst and process design principles
Analyzing medical check-up unit performance through the 7Ps marketing mix framework in a private hospital setting
Background: Medistra Hospital's Medical Check-Up (MCU) Unit plays a crucial role in supporting patient health monitoring and hospital revenue. However, the MCU unit failed to meet its annual Key Performance Indicator (KPI) target of a 40% increase in patient visits, achieving only 19.7% in 2023. This study explores the marketing mix factors (7Ps) influencing the underachievement of MCU targets. Methods: A qualitative method was used through structured interviews with three key informants: two MCU administrative staff and one marketing staff. Data were collected during a four-month internship period in 2024. Interview questions were structured around the 7Ps marketing mix framework: Product, Price, Promotion, Place, People, Process, and Physical Facilities. Findings: The study found several factors contributing to KPI underachievement: limited service offerings (e.g., absence of PET scan), price competitiveness against peer hospitals, incomplete one-stop service process, lack of promotional materials and coordination, restricted doctor schedules, technical issues in the registration system, and suboptimal locker room placement. Despite an increase in patient numbers from 1,123 in 2022 to 1,344 in 2023, the growth was insufficient to meet targets. Conclusion: Enhancing service availability, system reliability, targeted promotions, flexible scheduling, and integrated service delivery are crucial for improving MCU performance. Strategic adjustments to the marketing mix can better align services with patient expectations and increase satisfaction, leading to KPI improvement. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study uniquely analyzes hospital medical check-up performance through a comprehensive 7Ps marketing mix framework, offering detailed qualitative insights from operational-level staff. It provides practical recommendations tailored to private hospital settings with similar organizational structures and market segments
Land use transformation and sustainable spatial design lessons from a decade of regional development
Background: North Tapanuli Regency in North Sumatra has unique characteristics as a region located in the highlands and cool climate, with a dominant wilderness. North Tapanuli is divided into 15 sub-districts, with 11 urban villages and 241 villages. Each sub-district has its own duties, with the capital of the district being in Taruntung. The largest sub-district in North Tapanuli is Adiankoting and the smallest is Sipoholong. Methods: This study employed a qualitative method with a literature review. Findings: In addition to referring to normative regulations referring to the central government and the provincial government, the development of Tapanuli in the ten-year period, namely from 2014 to 2014 was boosted through breakthroughs with the Nikson model or innovation, knowledge, synergy, operation, and norm as a model in regional development planning based on precise data. In one decade, Nikson-style development has reportedly made North Tapanuli Regency a barn for agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. However, this development has changed the spatial layout and environmental quality of North Tapanuli. Conclusion: The North Tapanuli region is still dominated by wilderness. The past ten years have shown significant development, but with the consequence of environmental change. Novelty/Originality of this article: Over time, the population of North Tapanuli has also increased, resulting in land use changes and increased waste volume
Urban governance and sustainability barriers in Indonesia: Tracking the forward policy design
Background: Indonesia’s urban governance and sustainability reveal a significant barrier to the concretization in the field. Interestingly, while the government has invented a bunch of initiatives to assist the goals, their insignificant progress has been consistently revealed. Methods: Our study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) to track the issue comprehensively and carefully to estimate the objectivity, accuracy, relevance, linked to the research theme and it was assisted by Publish or Perish (PoP) software to collect, organize, comprehend, and scrutinize the data based on scientific papers pertinent to the research theme. Findings: Our findings display the significant barriers (e.g., fragmented governance, weak concretisation systems, and underdeveloped institutional mechanisms that block urban governance and sustainability in Indonesia. To swamp, we offer the forward policy design with three leading actions (i.e., integrated policy framework, capacity building, fiscal and legal reform). Conclusion: Based on these, we believe the issues of urban governance and sustainability barriers will get back on track and achieve the goals consistently. Novelty/Originality of this article: Our novelty contributes to a comprehensive framework that bridges the concepts of spatial planning, governance structures, and sustainability objectives in Indonesian urban areas in an inclusive, equitable, and resilient context
SWOT analysis for optimizing sustainable agrotourism development in rural hill areas
Background: Awila Hills Agrotourism is a local agricultural center characterized by diverse horticultural production, including cayenne pepper, curly chili, corn, long beans, pumpkin, mustard greens, and tomatoes. Beyond its role as a tourist attraction, this agrotourism area maintains strong economic linkages with surrounding communities, where local residents regularly purchase fresh agricultural products directly from farmers. This interaction supports a stable local market and strengthens community participation, highlighting the importance of integrated and sustainable agrotourism development. Methods: This study was conducted from April to May 2025 using a mixed-methods approach that combined qualitative and quantitative descriptive analyses. A SWOT analysis framework was applied to identify and evaluate internal and external factors influencing the development potential of Awila Hills Agrotourism, thereby supporting strategic decision-making. Findings: The analysis indicates that the Strength–Opportunity (S–O) strategy achieved the highest priority score of 3.42, making it the most feasible development strategy. This approach emphasizes leveraging internal strengths to capitalize on external opportunities. Key recommended actions include optimizing natural landscapes and visitor comfort through targeted digital media promotion, developing educational tourism packages that integrate agricultural activities with environmental learning, and maintaining cleanliness and comfort to align with government tourism development programs. Conclusion: The prioritization of the S–O strategy underscores the importance of maximizing natural resources and educational potential to increase visitor numbers and enhance local economic benefits. This strategy supports sustainable agrotourism development by balancing tourism growth, community welfare, and environmental conservation. Novelty/Originality of this Article: This study offers a strategic development model for agrotourism by integrating SWOT-based analysis with educational tourism and community economic linkages. The findings provide a practical and replicable framework for sustainable agrotourism development in similar rural and agricultural tourism destinations
The implementation of eco-pedagogy-based learning integrated with life skills plays a crucial role in fostering both ecological awareness and personal skills
Background: This investigation examines the implementation of eco-pedagogy integrated with life skills education, aiming to strengthen students’ ecological awareness and personal development. Eco-pedagogy in this context supports learners in understanding environmental issues through direct experience, while life skills education helps them develop essential competencies such as communication, responsibility, and decision-making. Together, these approaches position students not only as knowledge recipients but also as active participants in environmental learning and daily-life problem-solving. Methods: The study uses a qualitative approach involving observation, interviews, and documentation to obtain a comprehensive understanding of learning practices. Participants include the school principal, facilitators, staff, parents or guardians, and students. Data analysis applies the Interactive Analysis model by Miles, Saldana, and Huberman, which encompasses data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. This method enables systematic interpretation of the learning design, implementation, evaluation, and its overall effectiveness within the school context. Findings: The results show that the independent curriculum and life skills principles. Implementation is flexible and contextual, integrating daily activities such as outing classes, cooking sessions, and practical environmental projects. Assessment uses report cards, portfolios, and talent mapping to capture cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development. Although the program is supported by the foundation, school leaders, and parents or guardians, challenges persist, including limited infrastructure and varying parental understanding of eco-pedagogy concepts. Conclusion: The integration of eco-pedagogy with life skills education positively contributes to the development of ecological awareness, creativity, discipline, independence, and social interaction among students. Learners become more sensitive to environmental issues and more capable of solving daily problems responsibly. Novelty/Originality: This study provides a unique perspective on combining eco-pedagogy and life skills within the independent curriculum, offering insights for schools aiming to adopt similar innovative approaches
The influence of exposure to influencers on crypto investment decision in Indonesia: Desire to mimic and materialism as mediators and FOMO as a moderator
Background: Investment behavior has shifted markedly in recent years, notably with the emergence of the cryptocurrency market. This transformation is driven in part by crypto influencers who shape investor decisions through social media content. This study examines how Exposure to Influencer affects Purchase Intention in the Indonesian crypto market, incorporating Desire to Mimic and Materialism as mediators and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) as a moderator. Methods: A total of 258 Indonesian crypto investors aged 18 and above completed an online questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SmartPLS 4 to test nine hypotheses. Findings: The results reveal that Exposure to Influencer positively influences Purchase Intention, Desire to Mimic, and Materialism. Moreover, Desire to Mimic not only exerts a positive direct effect on Purchase Intention but also mediates the relationship between Exposure to Influencer and Purchase Intention. In contrast, Materialism neither significantly influences nor mediates the effect of Exposure to Influencer on Purchase Intention. Likewise, FOMO does not moderate the relationships between Exposure to Influencer and either Materialism or Purchase Intention. Conclusion: These findings advance the current literature on influencer exposure in the crypto finance industry and clarify the roles of Desire to Mimic, Materialism, and FOMO in driving Purchase Intention. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study lies in its integrated examination of how influencer exposure shapes crypto investors’ purchase intentions in Indonesia by introducing Desire to Mimic and Materialism as mediators and FOMO as a moderator, offering a comprehensive behavioral model rarely explored in the crypto investment context
Mediating culture through technology: Digitalization practices and cultural engagement in contemporary cultural tourism
Background: The implementation of digitalization in tourism also faces challenges, such as the need foradequate technological infrastructure, human resource training, and the digital divide among communities. One example of the application of digitization in cultural tourism is the Galeri Indonesia Kaya (GIK) located at Grand Indonesia, Jakarta. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique used was an interactive model with triangulation as data validity. Findings: The results of the study show that GIK has integrated various digital technologies such as interactive touch screens, augmented reality, digital cultural content playback, and smartphone-based applications. Digitization not only improves the accessibility of cultural information, but also creates an immersive, educational, and participatory tourism experience. Conclusion: The implementation of digitization at GIK is an example of good practice that shows that technology can be used as a medium for cultural preservation as well as for the transformation of the urban cultural tourism ecosystem in a comprehensive, inclusive, and innovative manner. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article offers originality by demonstrating how digital technologies transform cultural tourism into an immersive and participatory medium for cultural preservation and experiential engagement
