The annual report of the Directors of Public Health and Health Promotion 1997-1998
Perhaps the most important aspects of this Annual Report is the observation that cancer is now a more common cause of death amongst the population of the Greater Glasgow Health Board area than heart disease. We are seeing a progressive fall in deaths caused prematurely by heart disease. This is in part due to changing risk factors amongst the population and in part due to significant improvements in the effectiveness of treatment for heart attack, heart failure and high blood pressure. Glasgow participates in an international study which monitors the risk factors for heart disease in populations all round the world. Improvements in risk factors have been substantial in the Glasgow population but of course we are starting from an extremely high level of risk
