    Low-Cost Domestic Grey Wastewater Treatment and Recycling System.

    This report explored the development and evaluation of a low-cost domestic wastewater treatment system designed for small communities. The primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of using locally available materials and simple technologies to treat domestic wastewater efficiently. The study focuses on a combination of physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods, including sand filtration, constructed wetlands, and ceramic filter bioreactors. Data were collected over six months, analyzing parameters such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and nutrient levels. The research Results demonstrate that the integrated approach significantly reduces contaminants, achieving compliance with local environmental standards. The system’s low cost and ease of maintenance make it a viable option for under-resourced areas. In conclusion, the findings highlight the potential of low-cost, decentralized wastewater treatment systems to provide sustainable and effective solutions for domestic wastewater management. Recommendations for further improvements and areas for future research are also discussed

    Revenue Management Practices and Service Delivery in Local Government: A Case Study of Rubanda District Local Government Uganda.

    This study investigates the effectiveness of revenue management practices and their impact on service delivery in Rubanda District, Uganda. The study was guided by specific objectives which were to examine the effect of revenue planning on service delivery in Rubanda District, to investigate the effect of implementation of the revenue planning on service delivery in Rubanda District Local Government, to determine the effect of revenue expenditure control on service delivery in Rubanda District and to examine the relationship between revenue planning, revenue implementation, revenue expenditure control and service delivery. A total of 153 respondents were targeted, where local government staff were selected using purposive sampling and community members were selected by simple random sampling with a high response rate of 96.1%, resulting in 147 completed questionnaires. The demographic analysis revealed a balanced gender distribution and a well-educated participant pool, providing a solid foundation for the study's findings. The quantitative analysis demonstrated a moderately positive perception of the district's revenue management practices, including communication, accessibility of financial reports, public involvement in budget discussions, and enforcement of guidelines. Notably, regression analysis indicated a strong positive correlation (R = 0.749) between revenue management practices and service delivery, suggesting that effective revenue management significantly contributes to improved public service outcomes. The results highlight that effective revenue planning fosters stakeholder trust and facilitates equitable resource allocation, which enhances the quality of services in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Although the implementation of revenue plans has led to substantial improvements in service quality, particularly in critical sectors, ongoing monitoring and evaluation are crucial for sustaining these gains. The study also emphasizes the importance of revenue expenditure control, revealing that sound financial management prevents mismanagement and contributes to high standards in public service delivery. Furthermore, the research underscores the need for integrating revenue planning, implementation, and expenditure control to optimize service delivery. The findings suggest that aligning these processes can lead to better resource management and heightened community satisfaction. To enhance revenue management practices, the study recommends improving stakeholder communication, establishing robust monitoring systems, and enforcing stricter expenditure control measures. Ultimately, a comprehensive framework that integrates these aspects of revenue management is essential for maximizing service delivery quality in Rubanda District, ensuring that public resources are utilized effectively and efficiently for community benefit

    The attitude of students towards mathematics is a factor that is known to influence students’ learning and achievement in the subject. The purpose of this study was therefore to determine the effect of students’ attitude towards their learning and achievement in mathematics by first trying to establish their attitudes regarding the subject and finding out the factors that influence these attitudes. The study would provide some of the learners’ behaviors as a result of their attitude toward the subject and would go a long way in helping the learners to develop a positive attitude toward the subject which is a recipe for better learning performance and achievement in the subject. The study involved five secondary schools in Jinja district and the target population was mathematics teachers and four students. The purposive and random samplings were employed in selecting the schools, students, and teachers from those schools respectively with the use of student’s and teachers’ questionnaires as a method of data collection. The questionnaires were designed to capture some of the students’ and teachers’ perceptions and beliefs which were grouped according to themes including difficulty, liking, usefulness, and future expectations regarding the subject, learners’ mathematical ability, and achievement. The students and teachers responded to the questionnaires and data was collected, calculated, and converted into percentages. The study found out that most students had a positive attitude towards mathematics and that they perceived mathematics as doable, learnable, and important yet this did not translate to good grades. Also, teachers had some challenges in teaching mathematics which included negative attitudes towards mathematics by most of the students, particularly girls, this was a common challenge to all teachers who responded to the questions. The findings also show that perception and beliefs, perceived learning abilities and competencies, and previous performances of students in mathematics affected their level of motivation leading to low outcomes

    Design and Prototype of an Automatic Highway Streetlight Intensity Control System.

    Smart Street Lighting is an automated system designed to enhance the functionality of streetlights. Its primary objective is to minimize power consumption by adjusting light intensity based on the presence of vehicles or pedestrians on the road. The system ensures that streetlights operate at full intensity when vehicles are detected while remaining dim when no movement is present. Automation, which leverages control systems and information technologies to reduce the reliance on human intervention, is increasingly integral to the global economy and daily life. Automatic systems are now favored over manual operations due to their efficiency and reliability. This research focuses on an automated streetlight control system that significantly reduces energy consumption. The Smart Street Lighting system utilizes IR sensors to detect approaching vehicles. Upon detection, a sequence of streetlights ahead of the vehicle switches to high intensity, while the lights behind the vehicle dim automatically as it moves away. This energy-saving approach ensures that when roads are empty, the lights remain dim, leading to substantial energy conservation

    The study was about assessing the impact of Natural Disasters on Tourism Development in Kabale District. A case study of Lake Bunyonyi. The study was guided by three objectives which were: to determine the effects of natural disasters on tourism development in the Kabale district, to find out the challenges hindering tourism development as a result of natural disasters, to suggest possible measures to solve the challenges hindering tourism development as results natural disaster. The targeted population was 103 respondents who were considered for the study. These included local communities, NGOs, local government, tourists, and CBOs. Both simple random and purposive sampling techniques in identifying the study sample population. The methods that were used in data collection included surveys, observations, and interviews. Data collected was edited, coded, entered into the computer, and analyzed with Excel, a Microsoft statistical package, the results were presented in tables. According to the findings, 100% of the respondents agreed that there were the effects of natural disasters on tourism development in the Kabale district and these included injuries, deaths, chronic Disease Emergencies, cancelations of bookings, shortages of food, mental health problems, damage to Infrastructure, floods, hygienic impacts and the spread of disease. The study revealed the challenges hindering tourism development as a result of natural disasters and these included limited tourism infrastructure, perception of safety and security, limited tourist offerings, natural disaster vulnerability, socio-economic challenges, lack of awareness and promotion, and limited air connectivity. From objective three, the study indicated the possible measures to solve the challenges hindering tourism development as a result of natural disasters and these included improving the quality and quantity of attractions, having a risk management process in place, providing maps and directions to local events and attractions, create an email list to share information about your destination, promote local events and businesses, share tourism events and attractions on social media

    Budgetary Factors and the Quality of Education Service Delivery in Public Secondary Schools in Northern Division Kabale District.

    The study sought to examine the relationship between budgetary factors and the quality of education service delivery in public secondary schools in the Northern division, of Kabale District in Uganda. The study was guided by the following objectives namely; to examine the contributions of budgeting towards education service delivery in in public secondary schools, to identify the factors affecting education service delivery in in public secondary schools, to examine the challenges facing budgeting for education in in public secondary schools in Northern division, Kabale District. The study sampled 50 respondents from the target population of 52. The study used a descriptive research design combined with a case study design because it enabled the researcher to meet the objectives of the study. The study used both a questionnaire and an interview guide as methods of data collection. Data was entered into the computer and analyzed by developing themes (headings) or subthemes that were derived from the study objectives. Both quantitative and qualitative techniques were used during data analysis. Some respondents showed that the schools have adequate classrooms to accommodate all students. The condition of school buildings is well-maintained. Some respondents also showed that students have access to up-to-date textbooks and learning materials. Teachers have the necessary teaching aids and resources. Some respondents mentioned that there are limited financial resources were mentioned by the respondents in that public secondary schools often receive inadequate funding from government sources, which limits their ability to meet all their operational and developmental needs. Some respondents also mentioned that there is delayed disbursement in the release of government funds disrupts the planned budget activities, causing delays in project implementation and service delivery. The study concludes that budgeting plays a critical role in enhancing education service delivery in public secondary schools in Northern Division, Kabale District. Effective budgeting ensures that resources are allocated appropriately to various educational needs, including infrastructure, teaching materials, and salaries. Budgeting is pivotal for the effective delivery of education services in public secondary schools in Northern Division, Kabale District. However, various factors such as funding constraints, socio-economic challenges, and governance issues affect education service delivery. The study recommends that the government should increase funding allocations to the education sector to ensure that schools have sufficient resources for infrastructure, teaching materials, and staff salaries. Schools should adopt more sophisticated budget planning and management tools to ensure efficient allocation and utilization of resources. This includes training school administrators in financial management

    Procurement Procedures and Contract Management in Local Governments in Uganda: Case Study-Kabale District Local Government.

    This research was conducted in Kabale District Local Government to examine the effect of procurement producers on contract management. The predictor variables under study were procurement standards, procurement advertising, and bid evaluation while contract management was the outcome variable. The study followed a cross-sectional survey. Data from 86 respondents was collected and analyzed quantitatively complemented with qualitative analysis. Since descriptive analysis entailed a description of a single variable and its attributes, frequency tables were used to present the data. At the bivariate level, a Pearson correlation matrix was conducted to ascertain the relationships between the predictor variables and the dependent variable. A linear regression model was used to fit the data. Research findings from the regression model show that procurement standards (R=862), procurement advertising (R=656 and bid evaluation (R=899) have a positive significance on the contract management at Kabale District local government. The main conclusion drawn from this research is that procurement standards, procurement advertising, and bid evaluation have a significant effect on contract management. The study therefore recommends that there is a need to put more efforts on procurement standards, procurement advertising, and bid evaluation determinations to make contract management sustainable at Kabale District local government

    Role of Savings and Credit Cooperatives on Economic Transformation of Societies: A Case Study of Unique SACCO in Kabale Municipality.

    The study investigated the impact of savings and credit cooperatives on societal economic transformation, focusing on Unique SACCO as a case study. Its objectives included examining the services provided by Unique SACCO to its members, evaluating its influence on socio-economic transformation, and assessing the challenges encountered by SACCOs in fostering such transformation. Employing a case study research design, data was gathered through interviews and questionnaires. Regarding the services offered by Unique SACCO, findings indicated that key services included savings facilities, management of savings accounts, terms of interest on savings, and credit services. In terms of socio-economic transformation, the study revealed that Unique SACCO contributed to increased income, empowerment of women, food security, enhanced productivity, job creation, improved living standards through loans, community cohesion, and financial advisory services on resource allocation. Challenges identified in promoting socio-economic transformation included inadequate infrastructure, dependency tendencies, concerns over collateral repossession, loan defaults, inadequate government policies affecting SACCOs, mismanagement by officials, and deficiencies in IT infrastructure leading to poor service delivery. The study recommended government intervention in infrastructure development to facilitate market access for SACCO clients, clear policy formulation to support SACCO development and societal transformation, and proactive loan management strategies to enhance SACCO profitability and growth

    Design and Fabrication of a Motorized Honey Extractor.

    This report presented the key aspects and findings of a study focused on designing an electric honey-extracting machine that utilizes centrifugal force to extract honey from honeycombs. The purpose of this report is to provide a concise overview of the research conducted and the main outcomes achieved. Chapter one includes an introduction on a brief background of honey extraction, the problem to be solved, the project scope with the main objective and specific objectives, research questions, research scope, justification, significance, and limitations of the project. The intended problem to be solved in this design is that existing honey-extracting machines are run manually and thus have certain limitations, such as low extraction efficiency associated with delays in separating honey from the honeycombs. There is a need to develop a honey-extracting machine run on power to enhance performance and overcome these challenges. The specific objectives include the conceptualization of honey-extracting methods, selection and sizing components of the motorized honey-extracting machine, and fabrication of the prototype for the motorized honey-extracting machine. Furthermore, the project includes stating design specifications, developing conceptual designs, sizing machine components, and detailing the design of the selected concept with working drawings. Chapter two entails the literature review of extraction techniques and honey extractor designs. Chapter three talks about the methodology used to come out with a designed machine including customers’ requirements, the operating principle of the machine, and the layout of the machine in SOLID WORKS. The operation of the machine involves loading honeycomb frames into the frame holder either in radial, tangential,l, or both orientations. The lid is closed, and the motor is powered on, which rotates the frame holder and creates a centrifugal force to extract honey from the honeycombs. The extracted honey falls onto the drum walls and it is collected through the honey gate to a container. The frame holder speed is regulated by a speed controller. After the extraction process, the motor is switched off and the extractor is opened to remove the radially extracted frames and the tangentially extracted frames are flipped for re-spinning. The process is repeated for other unextracted frames. Chapter four finalizes the project design and Chapter Five avails the discussion of the results and analysis of the results of the designed honey-extracting machine taking main consideration the machine components' sized.
