An Ultrasonic Based Garbage Management Dustbin.

    No full text
As a fast-growing country in the world, Uganda faces a major problem in waste management. As of now, there are traditional waste management systems like periodic and routine clearing by the various civic bodies like the city council authorities, municipal corporation, town council cleaners and others. But even though this routine maintenance is carried out, we often come across overflowing garbage bins from which the garbage spills onto the streets.T he main problem in the current waste management system in most of the Ugandan cities is the unhealthy status of dustbins. In this research, there has been an upgrade in the trivial and vital components of the urban waste management system, i.e. dustbin. The basic idea behind the project is to implement a smart way of handling garbage, which is done by using the smart ultrasonic protocol to detect the presence of the user. The ultrasonic sensor detects the obstacle in front of the dustbin and calculates the object’s distance from the sensor, which is compared with the threshold distance in the microcontroller circuit of the Arduino UNO. Once this distance is less than the threshold, the microcontroller commands the servo motor to rotate through an angle of 90 degrees thereby opening the dustbin for the user. The Arduino UNO board was powered with an external power supply of 12 V. When an object is in front of the sensor at a distance of less than or equal to 20cm, the smart dustbin opens automatically and it remains open for as long as the object remains in front of the sensor. When an object is beyond 20cm away from the sensor, the smart dustbin remains closed. The quantity of garbage the dustbin can hold depends on the plastic container used

    No full text
The disposal of wastes into the water sources of Mwanjari region in Kabale Municipality, leaching of nutrients resulting from the use of inorganic fertilizers by farmers around water sources, and oil drainage from motor engine cleaning has led to increased water pollution in the area, however, there is no standard way of biologically assessing water quality in the area. The use of bioindicators is more favored as biomonitoring tools due to their ability to respond to a variety of environmental stressors. In this study, ecological indicators (macroinvertebrates) were sampled and analyzed about water quality in the selected sites. Based on the Shannon diversity index and Hilsenhofff’s Biotic Index for abundance and tolerance values to determine the water quality among the selected sites, the results were; Ngorogoza pond showed good water quality, followed by Ngorogoza inflow stream and Nyakiharo well with moderate quality, Mwanjari Washingbay downstream with fairly good water quality, and lastly Mwanjari Washingbay upstream with the poor water quality. The result was of great importance in the conservation and management of water sources and so encouraging the use of Bioindicators for predicting indication of water conditions

Background: This study was designed to determine the level of knowledge and the extent of practice of the components of essential new-born care (ENC), and the effects of a training programme on the knowledge and practice of ENC among nurses in rural primary health cares (PHCs) in Ebonyi state Nigeria. Methods: This study was a one group per-test and post-test intervention design. The components of ENC considered were: New-born initiation of breastfeeding, thermoregulation, new-born cord care, newborn eye care, initiation of breathing and administration of vitamin K. A neonatal care knowledge and practice assessment (NCKPA) questionnaire tested for validity and reliability, with a Spearman’s correlation coefficient of 0.81, was used for data collection among the (48) available nurses (All female). Results: There was significant improvement in the level of knowledge and extent of practice of the components of ENC following the training programme. Despite the improvement, there were gaps in knowledge and practice of the components of ENC amongst the nurses in rural PHCs and affected were the level of knowledge of eye care 20 (41.6%) pre-intervention, and least knowledge of cord care 35 (72.9%) and eye care 45 (93.8%)-post-intervention. Conclusions: Increase in knowledge corresponded with increase in good practice of ENC. The concern with knowledge transfer and translation of knowledge into practice could be achieved by pre-service and in-service education, update courses and workshops, and this will empower the nurses, getting them familiar with current trends and practices for improved child survival rate

    No full text
Several studies have been conducted to ascertain the impact of ability grouping on academic attainment over the past 20 years, but little effort has been made. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of classroom streaming on academic achievement and self- esteem of secondary school students and the relationship between streaming and academic achievement among students in secondary schools in Apac and Jinja districts. The researcher involved four secondary schools from the Apac and Jinja districts. The 240 subjects, both boys and girls, with 30 subjects drawn from each of the selected streams, were drawn from the four schools. The sample chosen was large enough to be representative of the whole student population in the two districts. The analysis of the relationship between streaming and academic achievement revealed that the p-calculated value was found to be 0.0001 with df = 238. Since 0.0001 is far less than 0.05, which is the P-critical value at which the researcher tested the hypothesis, the conclusion is that streaming has an effect on academic achievement. The study confirmed that ability grouping has a strong bearing on the academic achievement of secondary school students
