Influence of Industrialisation on Economic Growth: A Case Study of Mbarara City.
This research examined the impact of industrialization on economic growth and the effects of exchange rates and interest rates on economic growth using several econometrics methods: Pairwise Granger causality tests; The lagged error mechanism ECM; Serial correlation; Johansen co-integration. Estimation is conducted using the added manufacturing value as the proxy for industrialization. Empirical results reveal that an increase in industrialization is positively associated with economic growth in both the short and long run. The positive relationship is more significant when we use common correlated factors to address the issue of cross-sectional dependence. The policy implications of this research are that industrialization remains one of the important tools of economic transformation in Uganda and the successful implementation of the industrialization strategies in the Mbarara city is one of the clear pathways to economic growth

Assessing the Effect of Air Blast Loading on the Structural Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Column.
This project investigated the effect of air blast loading on the structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns, essential components in various infrastructures. With increasing concerns over safety from explosive threats, understanding how RC columns respond to dynamic loading is crucial for enhancing structural resilience. The study utilized advanced finite element analysis and the CONWEP method to generate pressure-time histories for different explosive scenarios, which were then applied to RC column models in Abaqus. The research focused on evaluating key parameters such as peak pressure, impulse duration, and the columns' resulting deformation and failure modes. Findings indicate that increased charge weights and reduced stand-off distances significantly elevate the risk of shear and flexural failures. The study underscores the importance of incorporating nonlinear material behavior in simulations to accurately predict structural responses. Ultimately, this research aims to provide insights and design recommendations for improving the blast resistance of RC columns, contributing to safer urban environments against potential explosive threats
Improving the Properties of Non G30 Soil for Use as Subbase Material with Tea Production Waste-Lime Blend.
This research examined the potential of enhancing the engineering properties of non-G30 soil from Kabale Municipality for use as subbase material by stabilizing it with a mixture of lime and tea production waste. The study aimed to identify the optimal blend that improves the soil's strength and work-ability while adhering to G30 specifications. Lime was combined with tea waste, an organic by-product of tea processing, to assess its effectiveness in modifying key soil characteristics such as the California Bearing Ratio (CBR), Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), Liquid Limit (LL), and Plasticity Index (PI). Various replacement ratios of lime and tea waste were analyzed: 3% (2% lime, 1% tea waste), 5% (3% lime, 2% tea waste), 7% (4% lime, 3% tea waste), 9% (5% lime, 4% tea waste), and 11% (6% lime, 5% tea waste). The results indicated that the optimal stabilization was achieved with a 5% to 7% blend, where the soil met the required CBR, CBR swell, LL, and PI values, making it suitable for subbase use. However, higher amounts of tea waste led to reduced CBR and increased LL, highlighting the importance of balancing the organic content. The study concluded that using a lime-tea waste blend offers a sustainable and cost-effective approach to improving non-G30 soils, particularly in regions like Kabale Municipality, where tea waste is readily available
External Support and Demographic Factors as Differentials of Achievement Goal Orientation among Adolescent Students in Resource-Limited Environments.
This study unveils demographic factors (age, gender, school type, compassion support, parental education, income) as correlates of achievement goal orientation. Using a convergent parallel mixed methods approach, the study investigated the influence of these demographic characteristics on achievement goal orientation among 510 adolescent students aged 12-21 (231 males, 279 females) in secondary schools in Southwestern Uganda. Using the Achievement Goal Questionnaire (AGQ-R) Scale and key informant interview guide, achievement goal orientation preferences and the influence of external support were respectively measured. Qualitative findings revealed teacher-student relationships, goal-setting training, defined external rewards, and peer pressure as critical factors that influence achievement goal orientation choice. Kruskal Wallis and Mann- Whitney U test results revealed that parents' income and education level, students' school type, and external support influenced achievement goal orientation preference among adolescent students in southwestern Uganda. In conclusion, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interconnectedness of these variables, offering valuable insights to enrich educational interventions, especially in resource-limited learning environments. This study contributes to the ongoing efforts to increase the adoption of achievement goal orientation that results in self-skill enhancement through targeted and effective educational interventions
An Examination of the Challenges Faced in the Implementation of the Competence Based Curriculum in Secondary Schools in Uganda.
The study examined the challenges faced in the implementation of the competence-based curriculum in secondary schools in Uganda; A case study of Rukiga district following the objectives of the study which were to identify the methods used by secondary teachers in teaching the CBC, to examine the availability of materials (financial, library, physical, and instructional) used in competency-based curriculum in schools and to capture teachers’ suggestions for improvement. The study adopted descriptive research design using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. A sample of 302 respondents was used for the study and data collection tools were both interviews and questionnaires. The results of the study revealed that a significant portion of teachers (62%) incorporate PBL into their teaching. However, a noticeable percentage (28%) are either unsure or disagree with using this method, suggesting variability in adoption or possibly a lack of training or resources for effective implementation. The study concluded that secondary teachers employ a range of instructional methods to implement CBC, including Project-Based Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, Collaborative Learning, the Flipped Classroom Model, and Differentiated Instruction. The majority of teachers recognize the benefits of these methods, though there is variability in their application. While Project-Based Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, and Collaborative Learning are widely used, some teachers face challenges with the Flipped Classroom Model and Differentiated Instruction. The study recommended that there is a need for more targeted training and support to ensure consistent and effective use of these pedagogical approaches and government should allocate sufficient resources, including materials, technology, and infrastructure, to support the successful delivery of the CBC

This study, titled "Contribution of Universal Primary Education towards Girl Child Education in Kitumba Sub County, Kabale District," examined the impact of Universal Primary Education (UPE) on improving girls' access to, retention in, and completion of education in the region. The aim of the study was to assess how UPE has addressed challenges faced by girls in primary education and identify areas requiring further interventions. The importance of this research lies in its potential to offer insights that could inform policy improvements and practical measures to enhance educational outcomes for girls in rural areas. A descriptive research design was used, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The sample consisted of 310 participants, including students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and district education officials, selected through stratified random and purposive sampling techniques. Data was gathered using structured questionnaires, interviews, and observations, focusing on key indicators such as enrollment, retention, and completion rates. The findings indicated that UPE has had a positive impact on girls' education, with enrollment increasing by 57% over the past decade, from 950 to 1,500 students. However, improvements in retention and completion rates were modest, with retention rising by 15% and completion rates increasing from 45% to 60%. Socio-economic factors, cultural practices, and inadequate school facilities particularly those related to menstrual hygiene were identified as significant barriers to girls’ full participation in education.
The study concluded that while UPE has made notable progress in expanding access to education for girls, more comprehensive efforts are required to address the persistent challenges related to retention and completion. The researcher recommends targeted interventions such as community sensitization on the importance of girls' education, improving school infrastructure (especially sanitation facilities), and implementing programs that help girls overcome gender-specific barriers. These measures aim to create a more supportive learning environment and ensure that the benefits of UPE lead to long-term educational success for girls in Kitumba Sub County
