    No full text
This report outlines the design of a light-duty engine overhaul stand aimed at enhancing maintenance practices for light-duty engines by offering a specialized platform for efficient overhauls. The main goal is to improve maintenance efficiency by reducing the time and effort needed for engine servicing. The design features thorough analyses, material selection, and detailed drawings for both individual components and the complete assembled stand. Key elements of the stand include a handle, upright, baseplate, front leg structure, central beam, rear leg assembly, casters for mobility, a dedicated mounting arm, pins, and various bolts for secure fastening. Stress-strain calculations from the design analysis demonstrate that the engine overhaul stand can safely accommodate the intended medium load during maintenance, ensuring reliable operation. The cost-effective design emphasizes the use of readily available and affordable materials, making it advantageous for small and medium-sized garages, as well as some larger ones, due to its simple fabrication process. By utilizing this stand, garages can enhance their engine maintenance practices to align with international standards, ultimately improving operational efficiency. This improvement can lead to quicker service turnaround times, reduced costs, and increased customer satisfaction. For smaller and medium garages, the stand’s affordability and ease of production make it a practical option, enabling a more professional and efficient engine overhaul process. Although larger garages may already have dedicated stands, this cost-effective design presents a viable alternative for expanding service capabilities or replacing outdated equipment. In summary, the adoption of this engine overhaul stand has the potential to enhance maintenance practices across various garage sizes, positively influencing the overall efficiency and service quality within the automotive industry

    No full text
This study aims at translation of Runyankore-Rukiga folktales into English, identifying cultural and linguistic challenges and suggesting strategies to aid cross-cultural translation. Five folktales have been translated with explanatory footnotes about the hard-to-translate and/ or untranslatable words and expressions. The researcher back-translated two of them to verify the validity of the translation. The study was qualitative in nature. It relied on data from both primary and secondary sources. The study showed that translation faces culture related challenges, given that the languages are culturally distinct. It also showed that meaningful, “speaking” personal names and literary devices such as euphemisms, proverbs and proverbial expressions, idioms and idiomatic expressions, ideophones and onomatopoeia, similes and metaphors are sources of problems in translation. Some strategies to resolve these challenges have also been suggested: firstly, employing footnotes to explain the hard-to-translate and untranslatable culture-bound and linguistic items and expressions; secondly, using the three proverb and proverbial translation principles proposed by Beekman & Callow (1974, p. 139); and adopting the principle that some devices remain untranslated and are retained in the target language (Kaindl, 1999, p. 275). In addition, the researcher used the methods: literal translation and free translation for euphemisms, as proposed by Wang (2020, pp. 1176 -1177); plus Baker’s (1992) taxonomy of four idiom translation strategies. Lastly, the five simile and metaphor translation strategies proposed by Larson (1984, p. 254) were applied. The study recommended, firstly, that the government invests in and puts more emphasis on translation work and studies of this nature; secondly, that translators ensure they fully understand the source and the target languages and cultures; lastly, that translation be introduced into the language syllabus at secondary school level

Some respondents also showed that there was cognitive rehabilitation therapy in that cognitive rehabilitation could help individuals build new skills to counteract an injury or limitation. From the findings, the poverty experienced by many people with disabilities and their families both influenced and were influenced by physical factors such as transport; lack of health professionals trained in specialized skills relating to health-related rehabilitation was identified as a large barrier, access to education. The study concluded that Persons with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities improved in terms of their activities of daily living. On the other hand, persons with intellectual disabilities could benefit from occupational therapy interventions to improve their ADL ability, even in the absence of any change in their awareness of disability. The aforementioned issues need to be addressed by the healthcare systems, policymakers, and the management of communities. Addressing issues like transport will increase the patients’ attendance at rehabilitation sessions. If the problems of the shortage of service providers are addressed, the rehabilitation sessions with patients will increase and service providers will more easily attend courses and workshops available for them. This study recommended that the local actors need to take charge and renew efforts made by international organizations by providing trained rehabilitation staff and quality rehabilitation services in several geographical locations and developing a national referral system. In addition, continuous education about disability issues and inclusion is necessary for the public and healthcare personnel to reduce negative attitudes towards PWD

    No full text
The study aimed to document knowledge about bean field pests affecting bean plants in Mwanjari Parish, Southern Division, Kabale District, Southwestern Uganda. The ultimate goal was to improve pest control or eradication strategies to enhance bean production, ensuring food security and increased income through higher sales. The study focused on identifying field pests that damage bean plants, analyzing the impacts of these pests on the plants, and providing recommendations for mitigating their effects. A survey design guided by the study's objectives was employed. Mwanjari Parish was selected due to its highland terrain, which is well-suited for bean cultivation. The primary objective was to understand the impact of field pests on bean production. Data was collected from 16 randomly selected farmers, highlighting that beans serve as a staple food and a source of income in the parish. The majority of farmers preferred climbing beans over bush varieties due to their superior advantages. In addition to pest challenges, farmers reported other constraints in bean production, including a lack of staking materials for climbing beans, labor shortages, and bean diseases. Results revealed that 87.5% of the farmers were in the active labor age range of 21–50 years, providing the workforce needed for bean farming. Furthermore, 68.75% of farmers cultivated beans during the second season, which offers high yields due to moderate rainfall. The study identified insects, such as aphids and bean leaf beetles, as the predominant field pests causing damage at various stages of bean growth. The findings underscore the need for breeding and selecting pest-resistant bean varieties as a sustainable solution to mitigate pest-related challenges. This approach would significantly enhance bean production in Mwanjari Parish and Kabale District, contributing to food security and economic growth
