    No full text
Overlay and maintenance resolve medium distress, but reconstruction may be feasible and economical while Asphalt pavement is badly deteriorated with time and traffic. This requires the removal of existing pavement surfaces. Recycling such construction waste has benefited from an economic to sustainability point of view and reduces the exploitation of natural resources. The shortage of virgin aggregate supplies along with the increase in processing and hauling costs has encouraged the use of reclaimed material from the old structure as base course construction materials, and involved in regular practice in various countries around the world. However, RAP materials may not be conventional road-making materials and need improvement. This study aimed to investigate the Engineering properties effect of using RAPs and CRR in their natural state by conducting common laboratory tests in the first phase, and Second phase of the study was intended to analyze the strength and interpret the optimum allowable percentage as partial replacement of CRR blended with 10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, 50/50 proportions by total weights for RAP as compared results with the general specification for base course materials. According to the general specification, the natural blends of RAP-CRR were classified. The mechanical and physical properties test results for neat RAP aggregate give ACV, AIV, LAA, SG, MDD, and Water absorption of 11.4%, 9.2%, 10.2%, 2.41, 2.130, and 1.62% respectively. Also the mechanical blending of 30% RAP aggregate and 70% CRR test results were 15.9%, 13.8%, 16.6%, 2.230, 2.68 and 1.24% for ACV, AIV, LAA, MDD, SG, and Water absorption values respectively with 141KN and 170KN when soaked and dry in water for TFV results. The results obtained from Gradation, Atterberg’s limits, SG and water absorption ACV, AIV, LAA, and Compaction results indicate that Mixes containing 30% RAP contents were successfully replaced CRR in the road base course layer of Asphalt concrete

Guidance and Counselling and Learners’ Discipline in Kasese District: A Case of Selected Government-Aided Secondary Schools in Bukonzo County.

    No full text
The management of learners’ discipline in any institution is always associated with the effectiveness of the teacher in charge alongside the guidance and counselling activities carried out. The purpose of this study was to investigate the progress of guidance and counselling as a remedial intervention in managing learners’ discipline in selected Government-aided Secondary Schools in Bukonzo County, Kasese District. The study was guided by three theories that examine the learners’ behaviours and basically how undesirable behaviour can be eliminated: 1. Behavioural Counselling Theory: John D. Krumboltz and Carl E. Thoresen (1969) hypothesized that all behaviours, whether adaptive or maladaptive are learnt, shaped or maintained through stimulus responses. 2. Operant Conditioning Theory: Burrhus F. Skinner (1938) observed that good behaviour is reinforced through rewards while bad behaviour is weakened through punishment. 3. Social Behaviour Theory: Albert Bandura (1966) posited that people learn from one another through observation, imitation and modelling. The study adopted mixed-methods research that incorporated elements of both Qualitative and Quantitative approaches to provide deeper and wider insights into the data evaluation. The study targeted 10 Government-aided Secondary Schools, 10 Headteachers, 10 Deputy Headteachers, 10 Senior Women teachers, 10 Career guidance and counselling heads of the department and 140 Student leaders. To get the sample population, purposive sampling and stratified proportionate random sampling techniques were preferred to select the different categories of respondents. The sample sizes were determined using the RDNEA standard table, Krejcie & Morgan (1970). Data was collected by use of Questionnaires, Interview Guide and Documentary Review. Qualitative data was arranged thematically in line with the research Objectives and Questions whereas Quantitative data was analyzed by use of descriptive statistics like Frequency, Percentages and Mean. The final results were presented using Tables, Pie Charts and Bar Graphs. The study showed that the majority of respondents had positive perceptions towards the role played by guidance and counselling in managing the learners’ discipline. However, a small proportion of respondents reported that their schools had no clear timetables for the guidance and counselling programmes. This clearly showed that guidance and counselling were not fully implemented in all schools. This could have been the reason some secondary schools continued to experience student violence. More so, the study further revealed that guidance and counselling departments in secondary schools were being managed by teachers without special skills in guidance and counselling. The study concluded by recommending that the Government should train teachers in guidance and counselling purposely to manage the learners’ discipline. Policymakers should provide uniform guidance and counselling guidelines concerning discipline management. Parents should get fully involved in the management of their children’s discipline. Student leaders should be fully empowered and always involved in discipline management, budgeting process and decision-making especially when drafting the rules and regulations. Organs that offer counselling services should always be invited to inspire and inculcate appropriate moral education into the learners. Teachers should not only teach for academic purposes but should always cater for the learners’ holistic development. Guidance and counselling programmes must be timetabled and catered for in the general schools’ budgets. The study suggests that further research be carried out in the entire district focusing more on factors like harsh and imposed school rules and regulations, unconducive school environment, poor leadership, lack of co-curricular activities, massification of secondary education, schools’ foundation bodies and other related issues that might be some of the causes of learners’ indiscipline in schools

The Value of African Wisdom: Reflections on Modern Education in Uganda.

    No full text
African Wisdom has remained on the verge of collapse arising from Western knowledge dominance. In the global knowledge revolution, however, all knowledge is critical in social transformation. This study examines the value of African wisdom in modern education. It interrogates the role of African wisdom in developing modern competence education. Thus, the article documents the philosophical scope of African wisdom as naturalized epistemology. It explores the status of African wisdom in the wake of colonialism, painting the hegemonic character of Western knowledge production. It empirically examines the value of African Wisdom in the development of competency-based education. Using qualitative research on Uganda, the paper analyzes the hidden educational treasure embedded in two African wisdom sources. Researchers used quantitative research to document the benefits and challenges of integration of African wisdom in modern education. Finally, the paper recommends transformative education in the social reconstruction of African education

Comparative Study on River Manufactured and Rock Sand on the Compressive Strength of Concrete Grade-25.

    No full text
The compressive strength of concrete is the strength of hardened concrete, which is the measure of the concrete’s ability to resist loads that tend to compress it without cracking or deformation. Duff Abrams revealed that the strength of a concrete mix is solely dependent on the mass of water compared with that of the cement. It is noted that compressive strength does not only depend on water-cement ratio but also on some other factors such as cement strength class and fineness, concrete age, duration of curing, admixtures, and aggregate properties such as size, shape, texture, and strength. This study was aimed at assessing the effect of different particle sizes of fine aggregates (river, rock , and manufactured sand) on concrete properties. It was found that the concrete compressive strength at 28 curing age increased with the increase in the percentage replacement aggregates that is; for river sand replacement with rock sand 25.2, 25.5, 26.1, 26.7, and 27.3 MPa for 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% and for stone dust replacement with river sand 25.2, 27.7, 27.0, 28.6 and 28.7Mpa for 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%

The study involved samples drawn from employees, business owners, and CDOs. To achieve the objectives, the primary data was gathered by issuing a set of structured questionnaires to a sample population of 133 owners/managers of SSEs that have their own businesses in Rubaare Town Council. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the effect of financial literacy on the profitability of SSEs. The finding suggests that most of the financial literacy such as financial knowledge, financial attitude, and financial behavior have positive and significant effects on the profitability of SSE owners in the Rubaare Town Council. The study concludes that financial knowledge has a necessary effect in translating into profits. It also concludes that good financial behavior contributes to the profitability of SSEs. Also, a positive attitude toward the future and social influences for the acquisition of skills translate into profits for small-scale enterprises. The study, therefore, recommended that financial education and training programs should have to be given by the government along with other institutions, to encourage the application of financial knowledge to activities of business owners. These programs should also be able to motivate and encourage positive attitudes toward the future orientation and growth of the businesses. The study also recommends that the informal sector should be encouraged to keep records of their transactions to prevent losses and miscalculations
