    Defect Characterization of SiC Schottky Barrier Diode Using Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy

    The aim of this project is to use deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) to energetically evaluate defects by using the carrier concentration dependence on temperature and where these carriers may experience deviation from standard predictions. These defects become apparent through multiple C-V measurements that are swept through a temperature range. By analyzing trends with respect to temperature, the defects can be energetically “located,” and thus identified. This identification can help streamline semiconductor material manufacturing/growth because DLTS identifies potential defect causes by providing data to characterize semiconductor mid-band defects. DLTS can assess nearly all parameters associated with traps/defects including density, thermal cross section, energy level, and their spatial profile/effective density

    Global Perspectives in Nursing Education: The Impact of Study Abroad Programs on Nursing Students

    Studying abroad as a nursing student is an under-researched topic that has many perceived and identified beneficial outcomes for students who participate. This expanded literature review utilizes 20 studies and one literature review to explore the facets of an immersive and international study abroad program on nursing and healthcare students. There are many benefits to professional, personal, and cultural growth that come from the experience of international study abroad. Such programs have shown to positively impact students\u27 perceptions of their own cultural competence, abilities to overcome barriers, expand their perspectives, and grow in confidence. There are also many precipitating and prohibiting factors that nursing students consider when deciding to study abroad or not. The ability or desire to participate in a study abroad program can be negatively impacted by students\u27 financial abilities, personal commitments, and language differences. Positive precipitating factors that influence students to choose to participate in a study abroad program include the opportunity for cultural growth, added potential value to personal life, and location of the program. There is future research that needs to be conducted to identify long-term impacts such as nurses\u27 clinical outcomes, continuing cultural sensitivity, and growth in professional and personal life. To create a global minded and well-rounded healthcare professional, the evidence suggests that studying abroad as a student is an impactful way to cultivate culturally competent and confident individuals

    Analyzing Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Incidents from NASA ASRS Data Using Unsupervised Machine Learning

    The NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) assembles voluntarily submitted aviation safety incident reports in their database to act on the information provided. This database allows the government, companies, and citizens to submit incident or situational reports to its database to discern recurring issues in the National Aviation System (NAS) so that the proper officials can act [1]. The narratives provided in these reports are text-based, resulting in large amounts of data to process. Previous work in the University of Arkansas Aerospace Systems Engineering and Transportation Laboratory (ASYST) lab involved parsing unmanned aircraft system (UAS) incident reports manually. While these reports can successfully be parsed by humans, this analysis is time consuming, technically challenging, and can lead to subjectivity. There are also many different factors that can play into each report, including what type of aircraft, location, or human factors. In my research, I analyze UAS incident narratives from January 2013–August 2023, involving operations under Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) “Public Aircraft Operations (UAS) or Recreational Operations / Section 44809 (UAS)” using unsupervised machine learning to discern patterns and prevention of these incidents. Analyzing these using unsupervised machine learning methods offers a quicker way to discern patterns between the reports, allowing for analysis of UAS safety and incident prevention. My research will also contribute to a continuation of Dr. Majumdar’s research, by further expanding on her work with language processing to analyze these reports by using unsupervised machine learning methods. The findings from my research may assist UAS operators to be aware of causes and reduce incidents

    Perpetrator nationality and prescribed punitiveness: The effect of moral disgust

    Does perpetrator nationality impact prescribed punitiveness, and is this relationship explained by moral disgust? White American participants (N = 243) read a fake news article about a physical assault. Perpetrator nationality was manipulated by indicating that the offender was an American citizen or in the U.S. illegally. Then, participants completed measures on prescribed punitiveness (e.g., minimum sentence for the offender), their emotional reactions toward the offender (e.g., disgusted), as well as exploratory items on patriotism, nationalism, identification with the U.S., and belief in a dangerous world. I predicted that participants in the illegal immigrant perpetrator condition would exhibit more moral disgust toward the offender than those in the American condition, and that prescribed punitiveness would be higher for those in the illegal immigrant condition, which would be explained by moral disgust.     Deconstructing the Anthony Timberlands Center: Making Preparations for a Building’s End-of-Life.

    Based on a speculative future where mass timber has become a normalized structural material, integrated into the building envelope as commonplace, and material reuse and reclamation are standard practice. The Anthony Timberlands Center is slated for deconstruction due to age and necessity for more updated programing. Today in 2025 as the building has not even reached completion, how can its assembly and use influence its purpose after the initial lifespan? This study is based on principles of design for deconstruction from two different theories: the 6 S’s of a building devised by Stewart Brand, and Philip Crowther\u27s 10 frameworks for deconstruction design. These two methods are then used together as a theoretical framework for breaking down and understanding the ATC at the end of its life for deconstruction. This study relates to the large conversation around the impact of architecture on waste production, growing mass timber use, and the industry\u27s relationship with a building\u27s end of life. The scope of this study is twofold: one in its analysis of a specific building, the ATC, and the other in its context, looking solely at US waste and construction streams and practices. The way in which deconstruction and its speculation are understood in this study is through the lens of the American standards. In conclusion this building can be deconstructed, theoretically, it is important to qualify in this framework the reality of the proposal. Are these methods achievable? How much waste is still generated? Can this building achieve full disassembly at all levels? The scope of this study is already informative about this issue. Limiting the scope to the timber systems and ignoring MEP and concrete construction simplifies the study. The large number of details, connection types, wet construction, and unique construction are real obstacles in the way of deconstruction. The Brand and Crowther methodologies worked well together to deepen the study. The language and building classifications that Brand proposes work with the frameworks to break down the building into an understandable format. This layering system also pushes continuity between the frameworks. This method of study provides a framework for these future endeavors. The idea of speculating a building\u27s death, even ascribing the verb “death” to something, implies something more serious and impactful than framing this solely around reuse and waste

    Fungi To Form: Exploring Mushroom Mycelium as a Bio-material for Zero-waste Interior Furnishings and Forms

    This capstone explores new applications for mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, in the architecture and interior design industry. Due to its naturally renewable and 100% compostable nature, mycelium proves itself to be a highly sustainable material. Through a combination of research, analysis, and hands-on experimentation, both the challenges and possibilities of mycelium are documented and defined in the context of solutions for fast-furniture waste, a phenomenon that includes mass-produced, low-cost items designed for short-term use. Following a foundation of literature reviews and case studies, this paper documents small-scale prototyping of mycelium-based models for the Ground-Up Chair, a simple yet uniquely crafted design for a seat that users can grow in their very own living room and fertilize their garden with it as the end of its life as a chair

    Survival Signature Estimation Using Optimization and Monte-Carlo Simulation for \u3ci\u3eK\u3c/i\u3e ≥ 3 Classes of Nodes on Two-Terminal Networks

    This research develops an efficient approach to estimating survival signatures for two-terminal networks with more than two classes of components. Recently, the survival signature has gained substantial attention in the literature on network reliability estimation due to its unique separability property, which enables passing the network topology information independent of the failure distribution of the components. Following recent results from the literature, estimating the two-terminal survival signature by Monte Carlo simulation entails solving a multi-objective maximum capacity path problem on a two-terminal network in each replication. We adapt a multi-objective Dijkstra’s algorithm from the literature to construct the set of non-dominated paths solving the multi-objective maximum capacity path problem for each replication of the Monte-Carlo simulation. We have carried out experiments on random two-terminal networks and grid networks with three, four, and five classes of components. In these experiments, our version of the multi-objective Dijkstra’s algorithm was compared against four benchmark algorithms and an improvement technique that prunes some paths to be explored in the multi-objective Dijkstra’s algorithm setting lower bounds on capacities. We compared the run-time of our approach with all these benchmark approaches and found that the multi-objective Dijkstra’s algorithm performs significantly better in most instances

    Predicting Migrant Youth Integration in the United States

    The relationship between participation in an identity development program for migrant youth and their subsequent integration into U.S. society is examined. The study focuses on the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants\u27 (USCRI) READY4Life program, which aims to support migrant youth in their transition to life in the United States. This study will examine whether performance scores in the READY4Life program can predict scores on the Immigration Policy Lab\u27s (IPL) Integration Index, a validated measure of integration. The study will employ a cross-sectional experimental research approach, using multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between the READY4Life performance scores and the IPL Integration Index score while controlling for relevant demographic variables. The findings of this research are expected to contribute valuable insights into the effectiveness of identity development and integration programs for migrant youth. By evaluating the impact of the READY4Life program on integration outcomes, the study seeks to inform future policy decisions and program development in the field of migrant youth support. Ultimately, the goal is to identify effective strategies for facilitating the successful integration of migrant youth into American society

    A New Method Using LiDAR and Well Logs to Identify and Correlate the Pennsylvanian Atoka Formation Subdivisions in the Surface Outcrops of the Boston Mountains, Arkansas

    The surface outcrops of the Boston Mountains in northwest Arkansas primarily consist of the Pennsylvanian Atoka formation. Where fully preserved in the Arkoma Basin to the south, the Atoka formation exceeds 18,000 ft of sand and shale. However, it remains undifferentiated on the surface geological map of Arkansas. This study investigates the possibility of identifying and correlating the subsurface subdivisions of the Atoka Formation to the surface outcrops of the Boston Mountains using a new method. Recognizing the Atoka subdivisions in surface outcrops using standard lithology and biostratigraphy correlation techniques has been challenging. The subdivision of the Atoka has instead taken place in the subsurface, as documented by academia and the petroleum industry, utilizing wireline logging tools. These subdivisions are based on reservoir-quality sandstone cycles that can be mapped throughout the basin. This study employs the first derivative of the USGS LiDAR elevation data (LiDAR Slope Map) and subsurface well-log correlations to identify and map the subdivisions, presenting a previously unused surface mapping method for the Atoka Formation. Prior to this, only localized attempts have been made to identify the subsurface Atoka reservoir sandstone units in outcrop. This more detailed geological map of the Atoka Formation in the Boston Mountains will enable geologists to identify the same subunits on the surface that were previously studied solely through wellbore technology. It provides a model for the completion of such mapping across the remainder of the Boston Mountain region

    From Adolescence into Adulthood: How Exclusionary Discipline and Sex Impact Early Adulthood Social and Economic Opportunities

    The school-to-prison pipeline has established the relationship between school exclusionary discipline and an increased likelihood of experiencing criminal justice contact. Furthermore, exclusionary discipline serves as a precursor to several negative life outcomes, including educational and economic disadvantages. Using a life course perspective and longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) collected from 1998 to 2024, this study aims to understand the role that sex plays in exclusionary discipline and explores sex differences in early adulthood life opportunities post-exclusionary discipline. This study utilizes logistic regression analyses to answer the following questions: (1) Are there different early adulthood social and economic opportunities for those who experienced exclusionary discipline compared to those who did not? (2) Do girls who experienced exclusionary discipline have better early adulthood social and economic opportunities than boys who experienced exclusionary discipline? Findings suggest that those who experience exclusionary discipline are significantly more likely to have lower educational attainment and lower economic potential. Females who experience exclusionary discipline are significantly less likely to have higher economic potential than boys who experience exclusionary discipline.
