    Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Performance Tests 2024

    Corn and grain sorghum performance tests are conducted each year in Arkansas by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. The tests provide information to companies marketing seed within the state and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating recommendations for producers. The 2024 corn performance tests contained 44 hybrids and were conducted at the Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center (NERREC) at Harrisburg, the Lon Mann Cotton Research Station (LMCRS) near Marianna, the Rohwer Research Station (RRS) near Rohwer, and the Rice Research and Extension Center (RREC) near Stuttgart. The 2024 grain sorghum performance tests contained 16 hybrids and were conducted at the NERREC, the NEREC, the LMCRS, the RRS, and the RREC locations.     Survey of the Labor Market for New Ph.D. Hires in Economics 2025-2026

    This year, the survey questionnaire was sent to 478 organizations. Questionnaires were returned by 145 organizations (30.3 percent). Of this year’s responses, 78 (53.8 percent) were from those who responded to the last survey conducted for the 2024-25 academic year. Among the academic institutions responding, the distribution of highest degrees offered was as follows: Ph.D.—43.4 percent; Master’s—11 percent and Bachelor’s—44.8 percent. The responses are reported for all respondents, and separately for Ph.D. Degree granting institutions and for schools whose highest degree offered is the Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree. Data for the top 30 institutions in the revised National Research Council’s Research Doctorate Report, 2011, are reported as a subset of Ph.D. Degree granting schools. They are referred to as the Top 30

    Stroke is a prevalent and deadly disorder that causes significant human and economic loss each year. Treatment of stroke is largely done through two routes: intravenous thrombolytic therapy and mechanical thrombectomy. This paper considered a design for a device that combines these two approaches. The device aims to use localized delivery of a thrombolytic agent to a clot site to treat stroke clots. An iterative approach to design was taken to continue to refine device designs generated by previous work. Components, including a balloon for localization, a semi-porous membrane for drug dispersion, and combinations were tested in scaled-up form. Generalizations of the device to allow for other applications of localized intra-arterial drug delivery were also considered

    Personalized Model of Cardiac Fibroblast Signaling Using Patient-Specific Data

    Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide for both men and women, and cardiac fibroblasts are critical to heart form and function. Essential roles of cardiac fibroblasts include cell-cell communication, cell-cell signaling, and synthesizing and degrading the extracellular matrix (ECM), which controls structural support and tissue repair of the heart. Abnormal fibroblast signaling can lead to negative impacts, including fibrosis, impaired heart function, and inflammation. A computational model of cardiac fibroblast signaling on Netflux and MATLAB software was adapted and utilized to determine the effect of patient-specific levels of cytokines, hormones, growth factors, peptides, and membrane tension on the ECM. This model integrates 191 reactions and 121 nodes, with 11 inputs that result in 19 outputs describing ECM impacts. Typical values for each of the 11 inputs, as well as standard deviation data produced the 500 random computer-generated patients that were analyzed. Cluster analysis, including hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis (PCA), were performed to determine if certain subgroups of patients had similar ECM responses. PCA analysis provided the clearest clusters, with one cluster of patients resulting in lower ECM responses on average. ECM nodes were split into groups based on average activity level, and a system model on Cytoscape revealed four transcriptional regulation nodes associated with high-activity ECM nodes. In sum, this work advanced our understanding of patient-specific differences in cardiac fibroblast signaling related to fibrotic disease

    This thesis details the author\u27s internship experience at Goldman Sachs within the Corporate Treasury Operations (CTO) division during the summer of 2024, with a specific focus on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into financial services. The internship included exposure to the company\u27s operations in liquidity management, funding, and payment clearing, with particular emphasis on optimizing processes to enhance operational efficiency and risk mitigation. The thesis also explores three major projects: the Repair Tracking Uplift (RTU), which applied data analytics to reduce payment errors; the Payment Clearing Operations Coverage Dashboard (PCO CD), designed to streamline team coordination across global offices; and an AI-driven project aimed at automating payment exception processes and enhancing decision-making. In addition, the research evaluates the risks associated with AI integration in financial services, particularly concerning customer service. It discusses the benefits and challenges of AI adoption, such as increased efficiency and personalization, while highlighting potential risks like data biases, security vulnerabilities, and the loss of human interaction. The thesis concludes with a reflection on the future of AI in financial services and the importance of balancing technological advancements with the preservation of customer trust and human oversight

    End of Life Care in Pets and What It Tells Us About The Moral Permissibility of Physician-Assisted Suicide

    Our relationships define us. We have different relationships and obligations towards animals based on the societies we live in and the attitudes that individuals choose to have with these animals. People often see themselves as having more moral value than other animals based on the fact that they perceive themselves as having greater intelligence and conscious ability. I think this notion is misguided and the way that people actually perceive moral value is in terms of their relationships with the subject in question. If life was truly perceived in a “more intellect than more moral value” lens then the permissibility of eating a dog would be much more acceptable than eating a pig in Western countries. Pigs have demonstrated intelligence levels that are superior to dogs and on the level of a small child. Yet, they remain one of the most commonly eaten animals in the world. The same cannot be said about dogs. In many countries around the world, people view dogs as pets and animals that should be taken care of. But there are exceptions to this standard. In some countries, it is socially acceptable to eat animals that are considered pets in the United States because the people of those countries do not view them as pets. With this view in mind, I want to explore healthcare, particularly end of life care in pets. Pets in particular are treated almost like an extended member of the family. They are loved and taken care of and I think that by seeing how we approach care for them, we can potentially learn more about how we should approach care for humans. One of the main reasons someone puts their pet down is to alleviate it from pain and suffering. By learning more about end-of-life care in pets, I want to see if the situation can be analogous to people and if we are being logically inconsistent in how we approach end of life care in humans

    Automation Programming for UHV-CVD growth of Group IV Materials

    The automation programming of a UHV-CVD reactor for group IV materials was performed. The reactor was programmed to perform all the necessary functions for a Germanium (Ge) growth with little response from the user. The overall goal was to fix an Argon purge program to clean out the process chamber of gases and create an Excel output program to ease any work on the user. There were also general fixes and address name changes that occurred throughout the program. Then, a one step and two step growth of a Ge material was formed in a UHV-CVD reaction for analysis. Germanium is a type of semiconductor that has the potential for more efficiency than silicon. This is largely due to the intrinsic structure of Germanium having a direct bandgap compared to Silicon which has an indirect one [2]. This allows Germanium to produce more energy than Silicon [3]. In order to find if a growth was accomplished, ellipsometry was used to analyze any thickness on the wafer. If there is any thickness measurements, a layer of Germanium was deposited. After having the automation run, a thickness was measured across multiple one and two step growths showing a successful Ge growth. Only one two step wafer growth did not have a measured thickness, but it still had the same shine on the surface. Thus, it also had correctly grown. Since the automation program successfully grew multiple Germanium wafers, the automation program for the UHV-CVD reactor worked
