Pet dogs infected by helminths pose a threat to household owners, especially those that are exposed to them. This study aims to determine the endoparasitic helminths among the pet dogs in selected urban households in San Andres Bukid, Manila. A total of 78 pet dogs were included in the study. Stool samples were collected, preserved, and processed using the Formalin-Ether Concentration Technique. The prevalence of dogs infected by endoparasitic helminths in San Andres Bukid was 32.1%. The most commonly found helminth was Ancylostoma sp. (21.8%), followed by Trichuris sp. (15.4%), Toxocara sp. (5.12%), and Dipylidium sp. (1.28%). Single infection among the pet dogs was common (23.1%) while the multiple infections were accounted in 7.69%. Continuous monitoring of pet dogs infected with endoparasites is necessary as this safeguards the welfare of the animals and that of their owner’s public health

Makati City until present consistently proves its market dominance ranking 1st among all cities and municipalities with the annual income of about P11.6 B. It managed to maintain its position in the country as the “financial capital” housing business districts such as the Central Business District, Rockwell Area and the newly acquired Bonifacio Global City. For 28 years now, it has been under the tutelage of the enduring Binay clan from Jejomar Binay to his wife, Elenita Binay and currently their son, Jun-Jun Binay. Currently, Makati City enjoys 467 Sister cities from all over the country which have become a site of exchange, growth and benefit mutually enjoyed by the Local Government Units. Jejomar Binay started the linkage on 1993. A masterpiece of more than two-decades of painstake that catapulted Jejomar Binay last 2010 as the country's Vice-President. The finished product is yet to be known as the country approach its next presidential election. The purpose of the study is to observe the patterns and trends of growth of the city which lead to its substantial growth and development amidst the country's humble conditions. More importantly, the study focuses on the role that Local Government Units play as the building blocks of the government and how their utility are employed for the political consolidation of their elected leaders

A Study on marine macrofoulers in South Harbor, Manila Bay, Philippines (2014)

    No full text
The South Harbor-Manila Bay serves as a habitat to a wide array of marine species including biofouling species like barnacles, mussels, gastropods, and polychaetes. However, anthropogenic activities and various industries in the bay continue to contribute to the degradation of Manila Bay’s water quality, which greatly affects the marine species present. The aim of this study was to determine the species composition of the marine macrofouling community of South Harbor-Manila Bay and estimate biodiversity through diversity indices. A comparison was made to a previous survey conducted by Vallejo et al. (2012) to monitor the species present in the area. The protocol and fouler collector utilized in the study was adapted from the North Pacific Marine Sciences Organization (PICES) method for regular monitoring of non-indigenous species of ports. Fouler collectors were deployed at five random sampling points around the South Harbor- Manila Ocean Park for sixty days (from November 27, 2013 to January 26, 2014) to identify the species that compose the macrofouling community of the proximity. Fifteen macrofouling species were identified, belonging to the classes Polychaeta, Maxillopoda, Anthozoa, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Turbellaria and Gymnolaemata. The dominant species present was found to be Balanus amphitrite, with a relative abundance of 56.82%, followed by polycheate worms, with a relative abundance of 34.38%. The values obtained for Shannon-Weiner index, Simpson’s index, and Margalef’s index were 0.57, 0.61 and 3.51, respectively, all showed low diversity, which is attributed to the high disturbance in the area. Eight out of fifteen species collected were consistent with previous observations by Vallejo et al (2012). Further comparison with the previous survey showed an increase in relative abundance of reported non-indigenous bivalve (Vallejo et al. 2012), Mytilopsis sallei

Localizing health justice: a political-economic analysis of the state of healthcare centers in the contiguous barangays in Malolos City.

    No full text
Primary healthcare (PHC) is seen as the key to achieving the universal goal of health for all (HFA). In the Philippines, primary healthcare works in the context of the community or more specifically, the barangay. In this level, it attacks the root of health problems: lifestyle, environment, and structures. Yet even this localized approach is vulnerable to the impacts of urbanization, industrialization and modernization. The research seeks to determine the state of the main institution that renders the primary healthcare to the barangay population. It identifies and evaluates how the local government responds to these negative impacts on the population health. Ultimately, it reveals to what extent the goal of universal health is achieved in the context of the urbanization of Malolos

Around Metro: A Mobile Public Transport – Geographical Information System for Metro Manila

    No full text
Transportation is a non-separable part of any society. It has greatly influenced people’s way of living and the way in which societies are organized. In Metro Manila, thousands of people travel daily for social and economic activities by using public utility vehicles (PUVs). It is a well-known fact that commuting is the most practical way to move from one location to another. However, the efficiency of using PUVs depends on the person’s knowledge about the streets. Around Metro is an Android application that generates directions and guides people on how to get to their destinations by using PUVs. It takes into consideration the user’s preferences and traffic information in generating trip suggestions. This application is helpful most especially for first-time commuters in Metro Manila

Effect of decoction of Tawa Tawa (Euphorbia hirta) on the white blood cell count and Peyer’s patches of male white mice (Mus musculus castaneus).

    No full text
The use of Euphorbia hirta L. decoctions as prophylaxis against dengue has been reported in some provinces in the Philippines. However, no scientific studies have been done to validate the claim. A decrease in white blood cell count is usually noted in dengue viral infection; and one of the areas where the virus replicates is the Peyer’s patch of the small intestine. To determine the effect of the plant decoction, the white blood cell counts, the gross and the histological examination of Peyer’s patches were used as indicators of its reputed properties. Decoctions of Euphorbia hirta proportional to human consumption were administered orally to one-month old, healthy, male, Swiss breed mice daily for twelve days. White blood cell counts were taken during days 3, 6, 9, and 12 from the dorsal pedal vein of the mice and counted using a hemocytometer. Mice were also subjected to post-mortem examination and small intestine segments were collected during days 3, 6, and 9, had undergone serial sectioning and stained with Hemotoxylin – Eosin. Both mouse groups were observed to have a generally slight increase in white blood cell counts during the course of administration of treatments. However, the difference was statistically insignificant. Gross examination of the ileum of the all groups showed acitve Peyer’s patches which are described as slightly distended. Microscopic examination of treatment tissues were observed to have infiltrates containing non-specific lymphocytes. There were no notable differences observed histologically between the treatment mice and the control mice. Based on the results, the decoctions did not have an effect on the white blood cell coun and on the gross morphology and the histology of the Peyer’s patches of the male, Swiss breed, white mice. The study suggests that there is no basis for the prophylactic use reportedly gained by the ingestion of decoctions of Euphorbia hirta when administered to mice

NERD: A Learning Tool for Database Normalization and ERD Development

    No full text
Data modelling has been a complicated task for students taking up a database course as well as for beginner developers. However, data modelling should not be ignored by people in a database related course or profession as it is required to develop a well-structured database. Although data modelling, ER modelling in particular, is a complicated task, it is not well provided with tool based support [7]. Several model development tools exist but learning tools for data modelling are very minimal in number. This study intends to develop a computer-aided instruction (CAI) for the development of entity-relationship diagrams and normalization
