Power, energy, and electricity is very important for any nation to be able to strive for development. There are various ways in order to gather and collect energy. Philippines being a country of a tropical nature, it is surrounded by an environment which caters to the renewable energy which can be harnessed and developed. Despite this, the government advocates for the use of coal- energy and even venturing unto nuclear means. This study aims to assess why the Philippine government chose to discontinue supporting the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant over the past decades and why reviving the plant will not be of any benefit to the Filipino Community. Interviews from the department concerned and from the people’s organization stationed in Bataan were used to assess and determine the possible future the plant may take, it is backed up by the survey conducted among the people of Morong, the town most affected by the BNPP. A total of 50 respondents, all citizens of Morong were asked a few questions to be able to support the research’s claim. Both sides were accounted, so that both sides may be represented, respectively

This study was conducted to determine the relationships between the heavy metal concentrations in water, sediment and Perna viridis soft tissue samples in Manila Bay. Two sites in Manila Bay were determined, wherein triplicates of water, sediment, and mussel samples were gathered. Collected water samples were acidified, sediments dried, homogenized and acid digested while soft tissues of mussels were also dried and acid digested. All samples were subjected to Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Specrometry (ICP-MS), wherein arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) concentrations were measured. All heavy metal concentrations measured in the samples were in safe levels except for Pb and As concentrations in P. viridis soft tissues which had values greater than 0.03ug/g for Pb and 0.72ug/g for As. Health risks caused by heavy metals are thus present when consuming mussels from Manila Bay. Furthermore, it was drawn from the study that As concentrations in P. viridis soft tissue increases when As concentrations in water and sediments increase. Concentrations of As between water and sediments, as well as between Pb concentrations in P. viridis soft tissue and sediments displayed a relationship wherein one increases when the other decreases. All relationships, however, were statistically insignificant (P>0.05).Based on the results, it was found that P. viridis are not able to reflect heavy metal concentrations in water and sediments collected from Manila Bay. However, similar studies should be conducted with greater sampling size to further establish trends in the accumulation of heavy metals in water, sediments, and in P. viridis

    No full text
Diabetes is a chronic disease. Management of diabetes involves following a treat- ment plan developed by the healthcare provider together with the patient in accor- dance to the living conditions and speci c needs of the patient. There are several types of diabetes and each diabetic patient has a di erent treatment plan. Tools available for self management of diabetes do not address the issue of diversity of diabetes cases among people. Compliance with the management plan may help delay the onset of complications among diabetic patients

As Classified ads systems are growing more in trend than offline classified adver- tising, more resources are being created and thus creating a need for organization and improved ways for users to discover these resources. The Collaborative Tagging and Rating-Based Collaborative Filtering in a Clas- sified Ads (Collab-Ads) system addresses these needs by offering a way for users to tag or label resources and allow them to rate these resources to be able to generate recommendations

People’s health is our nation’s wealth: implications of the Philippine medical tourism industry on the public health system.

    No full text
The Philippines has become a top competitor in the medical tourism industry. Philippine Medical Tourism Program was established during Macapagal-Arroyo’s administration to reverse brain drain, increase employment in the health sector, set international hospital standards, and modernize hospitals. Most of the hospitals associated with the Philippine Medical Tourism Program are privately owned. In order for these five government-owned hospitals to achieve global status, they undergo privatization which poses a detrimental effect to the public health system in the country. The public health sector is already deteriorating because of privatization and corporatization of government hospitals, misallocation of national budget, and devolution of health systems, among others and the medical tourism industry will only add more burden to the health system in the country

Effect of Pediococcus acidilactici 3G3-mango-soymilk drink on the lipid profile of diet-induced hypercholesterolemic mice (Mus musculus).

It has been extensively documented that elevated blood cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) raises the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, the single leading cause of death worldwide. Although cholesterol-reducing drugs are available, these are associated with serious side-effects and inflated prices which has driven the development of safer and more affordable functional foods that can lower blood cholesterol levels. The study demonstrated the ability of Pediococcus acidilactici 3G3 (PA-3G3)-Mango-Soymilk drink to reduce cholesterol levels in diet-induced hypercholesterolemic mice. Thirty (30) male Swiss mice (Mus musculus) were subjected to a cholesterol-enriched diet of 0.5 mL butter administered daily via oral gavage for twenty-one (21) days. The mice were randomly divided into five (5) groups and were given the following treatments via oral gavage for fourteen (14) days: (1) Negative Control (cholesterol-enriched diet only; blood was extracted after the feeding of cholesterol-enriched diet), (2) Positive Control (25 mg/kg body weight Atorvastatin dissolved in 0.5 mL distilled water), (3) Low-dose Group (0.5 mL 10⁶ CFU/mL probiotic drink), (4) High-dose Group (0.5 mL 10⁹ CFU/mL probiotic drink), (5) Mango-Soymilk Group (0.5 mL Mango-Soymilk Drink only). Blood was extracted from the mice via retro-orbital puncture and lipid profile was determined. Results show that both Low-dose and High-dose probiotic drinks significantly lowered total cholesterol (25.17% and 33.27%, respectively) and LDL-cholesterol (46.06% and 81.08%, respectively) concentrations (p0.05). It was also observed that both doses exert similar effects with a known cholesterol-reducing drug, Atorvastatin (p>0.05). Based on these findings, PA-3G3 may be an effective inoculum in developing probiotic drinks that have the potential to reduce cholesterol levels. Further studies to determine the mechanism used by PA-3G3 in lowering cholesterol levels may be conducted to strengthen the results of this study

Aid with strings: a study on foreign ODA and conditional aid.

    No full text
Official Development Aid, as defined by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, or the OECD is the flow of development assistance from official agencies in developed nations to nations which are eligible to receive ODA or to multilateral development institutions. These disbursements must be “administered with the promotion of economic development and welfare as its main objective” (OECD, 2008). This research intends to assess whether Official Development Aid is either beneficial or detrimental to the recipient nations. The researcher also intends to shed light on different organizations which use faulty forms of aid for whatsoever reason and to analyze what forms of aid could be considered faulty. The method that was used is triangulation. The researcher utilized this method in order to look at the different aspects of a certain project and policy not just from the point of view of the status quo, but to accommodate different ideas and alternative theories most especially those from the beneficiaries themselves. From a view of many different angles, the researcher could make the best decision in regards to a certain issue. The researcher discovered that ODA acts as a magnifier of the efforts placed into it. If an aid effort is done properly, then the aid will be effective. If an aid effort is done irresponsibly, then the aid will be a burden to its recipients. The researcher also defined what constitutes irresponsible aid, being tied aid, damaging conditional aid and the tolerance of corrupt practices

Navigation Decision Support System Based on Real-Time Traffic Conditions and Traffic Incidents Using Crowdsourcing

    No full text
Transportation and traffic problems have always been a major concern in developing countries due to its impact to the economy. Traffic conditions and traffic incidents, such as road accidents, flooded streets and closed roads, are some of key informations on deciding which route to take during travel. However, no system has been implemented to share this information among motorists that is accessible on the road. This study created a real-time navigation decision support system for motorists to help them make informed decisions while travelling. The system takes advantage of current technologies such as Global Positioning System, Graphical Information System, and Android in mapping traffic incidents and traffic conditions and uses crowdsourcing to collect the necessary data. This opens up future studies for long-range analysis of continuous long-range data, specifically traffic incidents and road conditions
