Correlation of night shift work and job performance of call center agents.

    No full text
This research focuses on the study of the correlation of nightshift work particularly the external causes (situational causes) of behavior and the job performance among the call center agents. This is to test the so-called Fundamental Attribution bias that shows externals causes as underestimated factors when wished to know why people do what they do. The study identified three situational causes that is to say the work schedule, the task identity and the social relationships involved. On the other hand, the indicators of job performance are the following: absenteeism, productivity and interpersonal communication. The questionnaires were given to a certain department at Infosys BPO Philippines which is composed of 41 call center agents and 3 supervisors. Weighted means were computed to analyze the answers of the participants. The result was there is no significant relationship between nightshift work and job performance. Therefore it means that working at night does not affect the quality of the performance. The study also presents the idea of a flat world where everyone is given opportunities to connect and collaborate to the world. With the rise of BPO Industry, the Philippines is doing so therefore, it is taken as a competitive advantage because Filipinos can adapt to changes fast and can afford to give quality service

Comparative study of the primary hemostatic activities of chitosan and cellulose derivatives.

    No full text
The study determined which among the chitosan and cellulose derivatives was the most effective in promoting primary hemostasis. This was determined by measuring the absorbance values of the released lactate dehydrogenase enzyme of the platelets that have adhered to the different chitosan and cellulose derivatives with the use of CytoTox96® Non-Radioactive Cytotoxicity Assay. It was found that Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) freeze dried for 4 and 24 hours have the highest absorbance values and were more effective than the control and other treatments. Among CMC (4 hours) and CMC (24 hours), CMC freeze dried for 24 hours was more effective. The efficacy of the hemostat is attributed to its hydrophilicity and cationic nature. The addition of chitosan also reduced the efficacy of CMC because of its ability to reduce CMC’s hydrophilicity

Tree diversity assessment of the beach forest trail of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

    No full text
The tree species diversity and edaphic factors of the beach forest trail of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) were assessed in this study. A modification of the Point Center Quadrat Method (PCQM) was employed for the sampling of the tree species. The importance value of each family and tree species was computed and the species richness and diversity of the site were measured using Shannon-Weiner, Simpson’s and Margalef’s indices. Soil samples were also gathered to give an ecological description of the soil along the trail. The trail had two zones, the true beach forest and the ecotone, designated based on the combined results of soil analysis and floral composition of the areas. The most important family is Calophyllaceae and the most important species is Calophyllum inophyllum. This species can survive in the beach forest despite the high leaching of the nutrients in the soil. The high species richness and diversity (Shannon-Weiner Index of Diversity - 1.812, Simpson’s Diversit y Index - 0.014, and Margalef’s Index 36.112) at the site were attributed to the relatively low level of disturbance at the site as well the edge effect since the beach forest meets with the mangrove and lowland forests

This study examines the relationship between communication satisfaction and stress among employees of a local manufacturing organization. Specifically, it aims to determine whether the communication environment plays a role in buffering stress perception. The Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire by Downs and Hazen was used in measuring the communication satisfaction of respondents in terms of eight factors: Communication Climate, Organizational Integration, Media Quality, Horizontal/Informal Communication, General Organizational Perspective, Relation with Superiors, and Relation with Subordinates. Likewise, the Perceived Stress Scale – 14 by Cohen, Kamarck, and Mermelstein was used in assessing the employees’ level of perceived stress. The study found no significant relationship between communication satisfaction and stress (Pearson’s Correlation = -0.121, p < 0.05)

    DentISt: Dental Information System 2.0

    No full text
One of the first attempts in the conversion of patient dental records of UPCD to electronic records is Open DentIS. However, the system lacks some functionalities and problems were encountered when it comes to patient record access. Dental Information System 2.0 (DentISt), the second version of Open DentIS, gives UPCD clinicians free access and storage of electronic patient dental records. The system stores patient dental records containing different forms derived from the UPCD admitting section form. DentISt also provides a graphical representation of the teeth in which observations are easily added with just a few clicks. Moreover, the second version is able to address the problem with the running time of a patient dental chart. New and improved functionalities such as querying for patients and statistics are available in DentISt. The system allows clinicians to easily search for patients according to specified criteria. Generating yearly reports is made easier too by Statistics feature of the system. The appointment scheduling feature allows clinicians to keep track of their upcoming appointments with patients. Addition of faculty clinician role also gives faculty clinicians of UPCD access to patient records and added privileges such as printing of patient record and approval of updates on patient dental chart

The political economy of small businesses in selected areas in West Zamora, Pandacan, Manila.

Urban poverty is a product of the shift from an agriculturally dependent economy to an industrially dependent economy. It is marked by the exodus of people from rural areas to urban areas. When this happens, population in urban areas increases and job opportunities easily become scarce. This compels the unemployed to engage in other means for income. One such kind of means is the putting up of sari-sari stores. This study looked into the phenomenon of the proliferation of sari-sari stores in urban areas, particularly small communities along West Zamora Ave., Pandacan. Through extensive research, interviews and surveys, a relationship between poverty, population and the proliferation of sari-sari stores was made. In addition, this study was able to identify where most of the residents in West Zamora emigrated from. It was identified that many of the residents in West Zamora have come from Aklan. The study also tried to establish a generalization as to whether sari-sari stores are able to provide enough to cater to the needs of the owners and their families. This assumption was found to be true for many of the respondents

Structural characteristics and internal communication of an established and a start up theater group.

This study describes and explores the differences in structural characteristics and internal communication of two theatre groups. Five respondents for each company were interviewed regarding the relations and interactions of the positions present in the company as well as internal communication. Both theatre groups showed differences in structure. Established theater showed higher degrees of complexity, formalization and centralization over start up theater. The way internal communication is practiced also showed differences even if they follow the same processes and procedures as a theater production. Start up theater is showed as a more open organization in terms of their communication. Both organizations have similarities as well, such as the position’s responsibilities and task within the organization. There were also arising issues with how the older theater manages the group, as it was revealed that start up theater was a breakaway group from established theater. Established theater is characterized, as a bossy management

Soil-vegetation interrelationships of the tree species in lowland forest in the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

Several studies have tried to examine the variations in soil conditions and relate it to variations in patterns of plant distribution. In this study, we tried to determine the association between the ten most important tree species and different soil parameters in the jungle trail of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP). Soil and vegetation data were collected from 30 sampling sites along a 3-kilometer transect divided into three sites - Beach, Hill 1, and Hill 2. The ten most important tree species out of the 106 species sampled were chosen based on their importance values. Using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), soil parameters were tested against data on vegetation producing two axes. The first axis was an axis of pH while the second axis denoted soil fertility. Tree species which preferred more basic soils included Hernandia ovigera and Intsia bijuga. On the other hand, Durio sp., Casearia grewiifolia, Dimorphocalyx murinus, and Intsia bijuga, preferred areas with relatively lower soil fertility. It was also observed that majority of the sites possessed relatively acidic soil. In addition, most portions of the lowland forest (Hill 1 and 2) possess low soil fertility. Using the data obtained from CCA, we can predict areas where growth of certain species would be optimal thus enabling forest managers to select which species are better suited for reforestation activities based on their adaptability to different environmental gradients

Growing up too soon: the case of street children and child labor in the Fifth District of Manila.

    No full text
Countless children born to poor parents are forced to bear the burden of providing financial assistance for their families. Their physical, psychological, and emotional growth are all stunted. Children drop out of school, fall victim to peer pressure, neglect their health, and in some cases, even abandon their own families to escape abuse at home. To provide for their families’ basic needs is the top answer when asked for the main reason behind their decision to work. In order to fulfill this duty, children are compelled to face harsh working conditions compromising their health and safety, fore go their education, bravely face the dangers looming on the streets, among others. It is wrong however to place all the blame on the parents. Street children and their families are often just victims of circumstance. Should one trace the root cause of all these, all roads would lead to poverty and the government's failure to address this problem. These children are robbed of their childhood, forced to think and act as adults, who in the first place are supposed to protect and provide for them
