    The low temperature FIGS set contains 95 durum wheat accessions. This set was created using the Focused Identification of Germplasm Strategy FIGS (http://figs.icarda.org). Daily minimal temperature and precipitation combined with onset information were used for this process. An index was computed using mean and StDev of minimum temperature, the number of days and consecutive days with minimum temperatures below 0 and 5 degrees Celsius. We applied a filtering approach by using a threshold for the index to select environments that are likely to have imposed a selection pressure for low temperature tolerance on in situ populations over time. Furthermore, WorldClim data was used to maximize the climatic diversity within this set. FIGSICDWLowTemperature2017 is the name of the FIGS subset including the crop, trait name and the year of construction

    The dataset contains one of the layers produced for “Supporting Coordination and Cooperation in Water Management in the Euphrates and Tigris Area CPET” project. The project aims to assess the status of water use in agriculture in the Euphrates-Tigress basin, determine and map the agricultural water productivity and identify options for improving it in problem areas of the basin in Turkey, Syria and Iraq. Agricultural Water Productivity (WPM) (kg/m3) was determined for each pixel by dividing crop productivity (kg/ha) raster layer by seasonal crop water use in terms of actual evapotranspiration (m3/ha) raster layer. The WPM was for 2002, which was wet year and hence considered a surplus year based on the annual mean precipitation data at the basin level estimated by SIWI. The irrigated areas were determined based on IWMI’s irrigated and rainfed area mapping procedures

    The dataset was created by UNIFI-ICARDA aiming to list all the soil and water conservation and restoration interventions in the Badia region, in Jordan. All the interventions were georeferenced by using public domain remote sensing data: Google Earth, was the principal source of information, although the image coverage of GE for Badia is heterogeneous and some Badia areas are covered only by old images. In these areas, a cross evaluation was done using Bing Satellite Imagery, where it offered more recent images. The identified interventions are divided by categories: 58 dams, 203 tanks, 841 check dams, 51 contour structure interventions, 27 reforestation sites, 30 desert restorations, 115 spontaneous intervention. A dam is an artificial structure typically made of concrete or earth and built to inbound water, creating a permanent or semi-permanent basin along a main waterway to support agriculture in the surrounding area. A tank is an artificial water pond built by private or governmental initiative in order to collect and stock seasonal water flows for agricultural/animal husbandry purposes. Check dams are linear structures made of earth (sometimes rock, or concrete), built transversal to the stream flow in the ephemeral river bed, in order to to slow down the flow of water, to increase ground water recharge as well as for agricultural and anti-erosion purposes. Contour structures consist of linear micro-catchment interventions characterized by ridges and furrows traced along the contour lines, where drought tolerant shrubs species are planted in ridges to provide a source of fodder for livestock. They are divided in continuous and discontinuous type. Reforestation interventions consist of vast land works following the contour lines along the slopes, where vegetation was established. Desert restoration interventions includes three different type of interventions: proper desert restoration like dune fixation structures, afforestation interventions, and aquifer recharge structures. Spontaneous hydraulic interventions seem to be similar in purpose to check dams, although showing a more irregular structure and distribution pattern. These structures are often closely connected with other agricultural structures and probably linked to private initiative. The mapped dams and tanks were compared with two other datasets generated by the Jordan institutions: CAP database (list of Badia Restoration Program interventions) and the WAJ database (list of Jordan Valley Authority interventions), resulting in some correspondences, although the comparison was only partially possible because the available satellite images were in several cases too old, particularly in eastern Badia. In other cases, even in presence of recent images, the structures were not found (neither on GE nor on Bing), revealing possible errors of the coordinates indicated by the two datasets

    The Relevance of Rest Periods in Rangeland Management for Plant Density in Tataouine, Tunisia, Spring 2017

    In southern Tunisia, rangelands are overexploited because the animal needs highly exceed plant production. For most of the skeletal desert soil, the overall vegetation covering oscillates between 1 and 10%; the perennial aerial biomass is lower than 100 kg of dry matter (DM)/ha/year. Being representative of different desert rangelands of Dhahar in southern Tunisia, Chenenni is characterized by an arid Mediterranean bioclimate with a moderate winter. Rainfall is low and sporadic; the mean annual is estimated to be around 80 mm. Temperatures are generally cold in winter and hot in summer with a mean annual of about 20 °C. The water balance is greatly affected by the low dense soil cover and exposition to winds. The local soils are predominantly not suitable for agricultural practices and have an exclusively pastoral vocation (skeletal soils). Despite the fragility of its potential, the region is overexploited by livestock during pluvial years. As a result, the spontaneous flora is found more degraded and its productive capacity reduced. The function starts by using a dataset were collected in April 2017 from 7 arid zones in southern Tunisia (Chenini community-Tataouine) which cover about 10600 ha including 5 private rangelands and one communal in addition to the continuously grazed site considered as control were retained for detailed monitoring-assessment study. We examined vegetation changes in the spatial and temporal patterns of community structure and rangeland function in response to the period of rest. This design will permit to appreciate the potential of regeneration and the persistence of plant species by monitoring the evolution of some descriptors (global plant cover, specific frequencies, flora richness and the plant density, biomass, rangeland production, and carrying capacity). Annual and perennial plant species density is measured in each site by counting species individuals inside randomly established up to 5 quadrants with 1 square meter area each. However, the density of perennial plants consisted of counting the number of each species tuft within 5 quadrants of 1 square meter area each
