The objective of the study was to investigate the physical fitness levels, body mass index (BMI) readings, and the lifestyles of first-year and second-year college students. The participants in the research consisted of 194 students (men: 110, women: 84) who are currently enrolled in the Department of Judo Therapy and Sports Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ryotokuji University. We performed the physical fitness battery test composed of eight items of physical fitness assessments, developed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. The average body weight of the second-year male students was significantly heavier than that of the national average for the same generation, but that of the first-year students was not. The standing height and body weight measurements of the first-year female students were significantly greater than those of the national average of the same generation. Average BMI of the participants was higher than that of the national average to a small extent, which was considered within normal range. In the first and second-year male students, the average coordination and muscle power scores were significantly greater than those of the national average, whereas the average flexibility score was significantly lower than that of the national average. In the case of the female students, the average scores of muscular endurance, the 50-meter dash, standing long-jump, and handball throwing were significantly higher than those of the national average. We need to investigate the physical fitness levels and the lifestyles of the students continuously.departmental bulletin pape

    The Poetic Style of Rengetsu

    Get PDF
Many waka poems by Rengetsu were written not only on paper but also on pottery she made herself, or on pictures drawn by Tessai. She can be considered a person who realized “composite art”. It is easy to imagine that these additional creative activities helped to provide Rengetsu comfort; however, it is hard to define Rengetsu simply as a poet, because she was also a ceramic artist and calligrapher. Her fascinating personality and poems that came from within saw her gain great popularity. She herself stated that she loved poems and wanted to write them herself, but her poems were not quite of the highest class, and she therefore did not have a strong desire to be a professional poet. The inspirational poems she composed in Kyoto, encapsulated the essence of flowers in the hills and dales and the moon. Using some examples of her poetry, this paper discusses what inspired her to write, and the characteristics of her poems.departmental bulletin pape

Poems Written by Neo-Confucianist, Xue Jingxuan(薛敬軒) -Focusing on Jueju(絶句)-

Xue Jingxuan (薛敬軒), (surname: Xuan (瑄), given name: Dewen (徳温), and pen name: Jingxuan (敬軒)), was a famous Neo-Confucianist (Ming Ru(明儒)), an educator and an incorrupt bureaucrat in the Ming Dynasty. However, it is little known that he was also a remarkable poet. Xuexuan (薛瑄) depicted to the fullest his thoughts and philosophy as a Neo-Confucianist, educator, and incorrupt bureaucrat. Many of his poems are found in the "He-Fen Anthology (He-Fen Shiji(河汾詩集))." Researchers of Xuexuan (薛瑄) place primary reliance on "Records of Read Books (Dushulu(読書録))," and "Sequel to Records of Read Books (Dushu Xulu(読書続録))" to study his ideas. The same texts are also valuable when discussing his poetry. When the author read his Jueju poems, he observed the strong zeal of Jingxuan in terms of loyalty to the Ming Dynasty, compassion to citizens, dutifulness to his parents and faithfulness to his friends. His lack of affectation, integrity, compassion to refugees and mercy to the poor are to be admired. Despite or perhaps due to his personality and learning, he was humble and generous through good times and bad. His attitude indicates how he was influenced by Neo-Confucian concepts and the world in which he lived.departmental bulletin pape

"Glial Limiting Membrane" Surrounding Blood Vessels in the Brain

Regardless of the type of intracerebral blood vessel, the vessel walls are completely surrounded by astrocytic processes, which form the so-called perivascular glial limiting membrane (Glm). However, the question of whether some morphological correlation exists between the blood vessel type and the Glm still remains unknown. The author addressed to this question. Finally, from a viewpoint of tissue architecture of the brain and phylogeny was described why the author became interested in the Glm.departmental bulletin pape

Comparison of Shuffling and Stepping Exercises in Balance Training

    Get PDF
[Purpose] Features of a shuffling gait include low center of gravity and the ability to move forwards, backwards, to the right, and to the left, while both feet remain in contact with the floor which is thought to be an effective balance exercise. This study compared changes in center of gravity fluctuation before and after shuffling and stepping exercises. [Subjects and Method] 20 healthy adults, all without any significant medical history who provided informed consent (mean age: 21.7 yrs), were divided randomly into forward-backward step exercise and shuffling exercise groups. Postural balance was measured with a stabilometer during two trials, each of 30 second duration, under the conditions of static upright posture with eyes open and maximum transfer length, before and after an exercise session of 5 minutes. Differences among groups and measurements before and after shuffling and stepping exercises were analyzed by repeated two-way ANOVA measurements and paired t-tests with P<0.05 deemed significant. [Results] A significant mutual interaction was observed between the pre- and post-intervention period and the trial period for each center of gravity motion condition. There was a significant decrease in the center-of-gravity fluctuation in the feet shuffling exercise group pre- and post-intervention. Although there was no mutual interaction at the maximum center-of-gravity motion, there was a significant main effect between the pre- and post-intervention periods. [Conclusion] Since there was a significant reduction in the center of gravity fluctuation in a static standing position with shuffling exercise, and since there was a tendency for a large increase in the maximum center-of-gravity surface area, it is considered that the change in center-of-gravity fluctuation was the result of stabilization due to the method of movement using the toes which kept the center of gravity at a low level.departmental bulletin pape
