Real-time Point Cloud Transmission for Immersive Teleoperation of Autonomous Mobile Robots
Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are increasingly deployed for remote inspection in various scenarios. While AMRs can perform missions autonomously, human intervention becomes necessary in cases where safety risks or potential damage to the robot arise. Since these platforms are often deployed in remote or potentially dangerous areas, physical access is not always available. In such situations, teleoperation provides an effective solution to resolve issues. The navigation stack of AMRs include obstacle avoidance and mapping functionalities that rely on the environmental feedback, typically acquired with stereo cameras which represent depth and color information using Point Clouds (PCs). In addition to obstacles mapping, PCs provide operators and algorithms with real-time environmental data improving situational awareness and supporting AI-based downstream tasks. However, the large volumes of data inherent to PCs pose challenges for real-time transmission. For this reason, dedicated transmission pipelines and data compression algorithms compatible with the limited computational capabilities of the on-board computer are required. This paper demonstrates such a scenario, equipping a differential drive ground robot with a stereo camera that produces PCs that are streamed to a remote operator wearing a standalone VR Headset. To accomodate the limited computational capabilities of the on-board computer and reduce bandwidth requirements, a distance-based filtering and quantization encoding is applied. Users will step in to assist the robot, with remote real-time teleoperation, when the AMR issues a "cry for help" signal during an autonomous mission
Dissimilar metal joining (DMJ) by welding represents one of the most relevant and at the same time promising challenges in modern mechanical engineering. The increasing need to develop lighter, energy‐efficient systems with superior structural reliability has made this research topic crucial for numerous industrial sectors, particularly automotive, aerospace, energy, and oil & gas. In these fields, combining materials with complementary properties makes it possible to maximize functional performance, while minimizing the overall structural weight and increasing durability under severe operating conditions.
The research activity documented in this thesis systematically addresses the metallurgical, technological, and mechanical issues that characterize dissimilar metal joining. This work demonstrates the feasibility of autogenous Cu/AISI 304 and Cu/Ti joints produced by Cold TIG on 1 mm-thick sheets, achieving full penetration, the absence of macroscopic defects, and minimal geometric distortion of the joint. A first aspect investigated concerns the microstructural transformations occurring in the heat affected zone (HAZ) and in the fusion region. Indeed, the presence of high thermal gradients promotes the formation of metastable and intermetallic phases (IMCs), which can compromise joint integrity and represents one of the main causes of reduced mechanical strength and poor toughness.
A second critical element is the heat input, which plays a decisive role in controlling both weld-bead morphology and the formation of defects such as hot cracking, porosity, or lack of fusion. Through numerical simulations, machine learning investigations, and experimental analyses, it was possible to correlate the intensity and spatial distribution of heat with microstructural evolution, showing that process parameter optimization is essential to limit residual stresses, reduce the formation of undesirable phases, and consequently improve the joint properties.
The thesis focused on the assessment of mechanical properties, with particular attention to tensile strength and bend performance of welded joints. It emerged that the overall joint strength is not solely a function of local metallurgy, but also depends on joint geometry, edge preparation, and the presence of microscopic defects, which when associated with surface discontinuities, act as crack initiation sites for crack propagation. Nevertheless, it was observed that adequate control of process parameters allows performance comparable to that of homogeneous joints to be achieved.
This study introduces an element of novelty by exploring the Cold TIG process in the light of both consolidated configurations and the most recent developments in GTAW. Compared with conventional pulsed GTAW which, over the last two decades, has generated a broad and consolidated body of literature, Cold TIG appears to be far less investigated in terms of systematic studies and scientific publications. While numerous works are available for traditional pulsed GTAW, analyzing its effects on microstructure, residual stresses, and process efficiency in various metals and alloys, only sporadic references can be found for the Cold TIG variant. This disparity in attention highlights how Cold TIG, despite its significant potential (especially for thin) sheet welding and for reducing heat input in dissimilar joints, remains largely confined to an applicative and experimental interest, without having reached the same level of scientific and engineering maturity that characterizes conventional pulsed GTAW.
Finally, the research highlights the future prospects of the Cold TIG process. Its capability to reduce the average heat input while maintaining good penetration makes it particularly suitable for contexts in which dimensional stability and microstructural control are essential, such as the joining of thin sheets or dissimilar metals.
In conclusion, the work presented does not merely describe the state of the art, but provides an original contribution to understanding the mechanisms governing dissimilar metal welding. The integration of theoretical analyses, machine learning, numerical simulations, and experimental validation made it possible to outline concrete guidelines for process, parameter optimization, with the goal of developing joints that are reliable, safe, and durable. This study therefore fits within the framework of applied research aimed at the continuous improvement of joining techniques, laying the groundwork for further industrial and academic developments in an area of fundamental importance to contemporary mechanical engineering

This thesis addresses the study, design, and experimental validation of a new type of pedal-assisted light electric vehicle (ELV – Electric L-category Vehicle), in compliance with European standards EN15194 and DIN79010. In an urban context marked by stringent environmental policies and a growing need for sustainable mobility solutions, these vehicles represent an effective response to the challenges of the energy transition, combining efficiency, safety, and usability even in adverse weather conditions.
The research project is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 7 ("Affordable and Clean Energy") and SDG 11 ("Sustainable Cities and Communities"), contributing to the technical and scientific progress of low-emission urban transport systems. Experimental and analytical work focused on the development of the SNAP vehicle, a pedal-assisted light electric quadricycle, designed in two distinct but comparable configurations: one with a traditional mechanical transmission (drive-by-chain) and one with an innovative electric transmission (drive-by-wire).
The primary objective of the analysis was to compare the two drivetrain architectures to identify the most efficient solution suitable for large-scale deployment. After a detailed review of the state of the art in urban mobility, electric vehicles, and cargo bikes, the research addressed the integrated design of the frame, suspension, braking system, steering, and electronics, followed by a phase of physical prototyping and numerical modeling (MATLAB and ADAMS).
The experimental tests, conducted according to the protocols required by the DIN79010 standard—including the moose test, constant radius cornering, and straight-line stability tests—allowed the theoretical models to be validated and the dynamic performance of the two systems to be objectively compared. Both configurations exceeded regulatory requirements, demonstrating equivalent stability and safety. However, the drive-by-wire system stood out for its simpler construction, reduced number of mechanical components, lower overall mass, and lower maintenance requirements, as well as for the design flexibility resulting from the elimination of mechanical coupling constraints.
Simulations and vehicle tests also confirmed that the asymmetry introduced by an in-wheel drive system does not lead to significant dynamic effects, as the resulting slip angle is negligible and undetectable experimentally.
In conclusion, the thesis demonstrates that the adoption of drive-by-wire solutions represents a decisive step towards a new generation of more efficient, modular, and sustainable light electric vehicles. This work provides a solid methodological and experimental basis for the evolution of design paradigms in the urban mobility sector, contributing to the creation of more livable, safe, and low-emission cities
Integrating EV-based DC microgrids in distribution network for energy community purposes
The combination of renewable resources, storage and EV charging station in DC microgrid, exploiting vehicle-to-grid facilities, allows to fairly address network integration on both technical and economic aspects. In this paper, the opportunity of aggregating these DC microgrid facilities as prosumers in an energy community framework, is explored increasing local demand with the aim of evaluating the most efficient community configuration. In particular, the day-ahead optimal scheduling is assessed by a multi-objective procedure accounting for distribution grid technical operation targets, and energy community economic efforts, including DC microgrid costs and proper remuneration scheme for energy exchanged within the community. The procedure is tested on a distribution network with different load users and integrating a set of DC microgrids, based on data of a real demonstrator
Updating wayfinding literature and teaching methodology
The introduction of a theoretical course on wayfinding, offered for the first time
to second year interior design students at the Università Iuav di Venezia, was the starting point for reflecting on the methodology of teaching wayfinding design. By the structuring of the course, it emerged that the disciplinary bibliographical apparatus, although foundational, is meager and dated, where the most recent volume dates back about ten years. This analysis highlighted the need to implement the common bibliography primarily from a contemporary design perspective, thus offering a selection of interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological contributions to build a common background among students.
These theoretical and methodological reflections have set off the absence of any disciplinary tool capable of integrating both the load-bearing and historical aspects of the discipline and the knowledge on complementary contemporary design themes, that together can shed light on the many facets of wayfinding. One of the main results of the course is the construction of a glossary of up-to-date wayfinding design, written and designed by the students in a co-partecipative way. In the form of an analog flexible design artifact, it can be used as a teaching tool in future classes and it can be expanded by future students, even in an asynchronous co-creation model

A Long Period Grating based on ZBLAN Optical Fiber for the Mid-Infrared
In this paper, a micro-tapered long period grating is fabricated on fluoride optical fiber, overcoming the challenges related to the thermomechanical properties of this glass. The period of the fabricated zirconium fluoride grating is approximately Λ=1.15 mm and the waist diameter of each micro-taper is approximately dw= 95 μm. The broadband characterization in the mid-infrared demonstrates the presence of a dip in the transmission spectrum, due to the coupling between the LP01 and the LP02 electromagnetic modes. The proposed low-cost long period grating paves the way to several applications in the mid-infrared such as biosensing, and optical filtering
A Multiphysics Reservoir Computing System with Mass-Spring Metamaterials and Spintronic Readout for Vibration Analysis
Mechanical metamaterials, which can be modeled as chains of mass-spring resonators, are drawing significant interest from researchers across various engineering fields due to their unique properties and simple design. The continuous advances in developing new technologies and algorithms for artificial intelligence are opening a path to employing the mechanical properties of these metamaterials to perform tasks such as acoustic wave recognition, smart sensing and adaptive dynamical vibration absorption. A possible approach in this sense is based on the idea of reservoir computing (RC). RC is an emerging neuromorphic computing paradigm that leverages the intrinsic dynamics of nonlinear systems for efficient temporal data processing. In this work, we propose a multiphysics physical reservoir combining 2-dimensional nonlinear mechanical metamaterials (modelled as a network of massspring resonators) with spintronic technology as the electrical reading scheme of the masses' dynamics. In particular, this hybrid system exploits the stray field interactions between the magnetic tunnel junctions on top of the masses of the metamaterials and the mechanical dynamics of the elastic medium to achieve a highly compact, tunable, and energyefficient reservoir. The proposed design can operate across a broad frequency spectrum, from hertz to gigahertz, and can be scaled to the nanometric regime. We show that the nonlinear dynamics of this metamaterial maps the input to a highdimensional space, achieving over 90% accuracy for a vowel recognition task, comparable to state-of-the-art reservoir computing implementations, with minimal preprocessing. The integration of elastic inputs simplifies signal injection by directly utilizing mechanical vibrations, making this system particularly suited for real-time sensing and computing applications. With its scalability, efficiency, and accuracy, this hybrid spintronicsmechanical metamaterial used as RC system holds significant potential for applications in biosensing, machinery anomaly detection, and edge computing tasks such as voice and acoustic pattern recognition
Bruno Munari’s Travel Sculptures, a Restless Lexicon
The present contribution describes the research work to catalogue and study that system of objects, multiples and mass-produced, to which Munari gave the name Travel Sculptures, which he created from 1958 onwards in a constant and tireless search for a balance between form and meaning, between utility and aesthetic function, between art and design. In the taxonomic reading of the master’s production and above all through the decoding operations performed by the drawing, the sculptures appear to be objects that revolutionise the way of looking at things: based on the ‘co-presence of variants’, what is observed is not a single subjective and definitive image, but a multitude of images in continuous variation; not a single form but a series of forms in movement. Through the operations of interpretation of the approximately 40 sculptures, traced through research in the multi-source literature, which shows their strong critical historical impact, they have been redesigned and decoded through an actual survey carried out on the images collected and catalogued according to chronological criteria, referring to material, size, etc. As will be seen, the design of the artefacts is crossed by the multiple dynamics of observation and use, by the relationship with space, by the action of opening and closing, by the discontinuity of the material, by light and shadows, by movement and stillness, restoring a particular language that is never monotonous, at times ambiguous and discordant, variegated, that in the graphic sign seeks its state of stillness
