Optimization of the thermographic inspection procedure for accurate detection of skin melanoma suspicion
This paper discusses a new strategy for dealing accurately with a diagnosis of skin melanoma. The technique used is the thermographic one that in recent years has been the subject of much attention by researchers, being non-invasive and capable of highlighting the metabolic activity of the skin lesion. The aim is to verify the accuracy and reliability of the diagnosis through the analysis for comparison of the thermal behavior of two skin areas, one affected by the lesion and the other healthy and placed in the vicinity of the first with similar epidermal characteristics. Here, we want to discuss the correctness of the thermographic technique used to date for this purpose and propose a more accurate procedure to establish the presence of an epidermal melanoma employing the same non-invasive technique. The authors define some rules to be observed in the analysis, by describing a measurement procedure that reduces the uncertainties. The technique proposed here is based on the accurate evaluation of the time constants of the responses to a thermal stress step of the inspected epidermal areas, the ill and the healthy ones. The experimental setup developed, and the first thermographic results detected are here presented
Active Devices Based on Rare-Earth-doped Fluoroindate Fibers in Mid-Infrared Range
Rare-earth-doped fluoroindate fibers have emerged as promising materials for active photonic devices operating in the mid-infrared (Mid-IR) range, allowing low phonon energy and extended transmission from near infrared till 5.5 μm wavelength. These fibers enable efficient Mid-IR lasing and amplification by leveraging the spectroscopic properties of rare-earth ions such as Er3+, Dy3+, Pr3+ and Ho3+, which exhibit strong emission in this spectral region. Moreover, fluoroindate glasses can provide reduced multiphonon quenching, enhancing lasing efficiency. They can be employed to fabricate Mid-IR fiber lasers, optical amplifiers, to be integrated into sensing systems for environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and defense technologies. Metasurfaces for Sensing and Display Applications
Metasurfaces offer unique capabilities for controlling electromagnetic waves at subwavelength scales, enabling innovative sensing and display applications. In this contribution, we present recent advances in the design and application of functional metasurfaces. Key topics include metasurfaces supporting bound-state-in-the-continuum resonances for enhanced electromagnetic field localization in spectroscopy and guided-mode resonance metasurfaces for polychromatic displays highlighting their potential for multicolor generation. Finally, we explore the design of a thermoplasmonic coupler for localized heat generation to selectively actuate VO2 phase-change, a critical mechanism for reconfigurable metasurfaces technologies

Il colore è un elemento fondamentale per l’identità visiva e culturale di una città. Le facciate esterne delle abitazioni delle città sudamericane, per esempio, con i loro colori esprimono un aspetto visivo dello spazio urbano,
ma rappresentano una manifestazione complessa e stratificata di fattori culturali, storici, ambientali e funzionali. La scelta dei colori delle facciate è il risultato di una combinazione di tradizioni secolari e fattori simbolici
(componente immateriale) nonché di risposte pratiche al particolare clima (componente materiale). Cartagena de Indias, città costiera identitaria, rappresenta un caso emblematico: il colore contribuisce a costruire l’immagine urbana e a rafforzare l’identità del luogo. Il contributo propone azioni strategiche, attraverso analisi visuali e grafiche, per creare un abaco capace di riconoscere, catalogare e tutelare questo patrimonio, esplorando il colore ed i suoi significati, anche attraverso il ricorso ad approcci di tipo teorico
The Impact of Energy Communities Virtual Islanding on the Integration of Renewables in Distribution Power Systems
In power distribution networks, the growing integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) presents a challenge for the electricity system and its operators, who need to make the energy sector more flexible and resilient. In this context, this paper proposes a novel flexibilization service for the distribution system leveraging the role of renewable energy communities (RECs), an emerging entity with the potential to facilitate the sustainable energy transition through Virtual Islanding operation. The concept of Virtual Islanding is investigated in the paper and a methodology for its validation is developed. Its effectiveness is then assessed using an IEEE-standard 33-node network with significant penetration of RESs, considering the presence of multiple RECs to prove its benefits on electrical distribution networks. The results showcase the advantages of the VI paradigm both from technical and sustainability viewpoint
The use of λιμήν in Ancient Sources: Reflections on Function and Perception in Ancient Harbor Studies
Il contributo propone un’analisi critica del termine greco λιμήν (limèn), tradizionalmente impiegato
per designare il porto, attraverso l’esame della sua occorrenza e delle sue sfumature semantiche nella letteratura antica.
Inserito nel più ampio quadro degli studi sulla “connettività” del Mediterraneo antico, il porto emerge come nodo fun-
zionale e simbolico all’interno dei sistemi infrastrutturali che collegano le vie terrestri e marittime. Sulla base del con-
fronto tra i diversi termini attestati nelle fonti letterarie greche e latine, il contributo individua distinzioni funzionali tra
porti commerciali, militari e strutture di ormeggio, evidenziando come la percezione e la descrizione degli scali antichi
siano fortemente influenzate dalla loro organizzazione interna, dalla funzione difensiva e dalla relazione con il tessuto
urbano. Ne deriva una riflessione metodologica sul ruolo semantico e topografico del porto nell’immaginario geografico
del mondo antico.This paper offers a critical analysis of the Greek term λιμήν (limèn), traditionally used to denote the port,
by examining its occurrences and semantic nuances in ancient literary sources. Framed within the broader context of
studies on Mediterranean “connectivity”, the port emerges as both a functional and symbolic node within infrastructur-
al systems linking land and sea routes. Through the comparison of various terms found in Greek and Latin texts, the pa-
per identifies functional distinctions between commercial harbours, military ports, and mooring facilities, highlighting
how ancient perceptions and descriptions of port areas were strongly shaped by their internal organization, defensive
role, and relationship with the urban fabric. The result is a methodological reflection on the semantic and topographical
role of the port in the geographical imagination of the ancient world
