Freedom, Equality and Justice in Islam

    No full text
Modern Muslim thinkers who try to locate and construct constitutional tenets based on the Islamic tradition face various difficulties, for they have to address a segment of an audience that expects an exposition comparable to the West\u27s in terms of terminologies, institutions, and remedies, as well as to draw from the best practices of Islamic history and modern Muslim societies. It is always frustrating to learn that Islam\u27s constitutional history, despite its richness in individual constitutional tenets, loses some of its utility in modern Muslim societies due to systematic changes caused by globalization and pervasive international institutions, both of which have had far-reaching consequences of domestic sociopolitical settings

Confronting Fundamentalism with Education Policy: Analysis of NGO Schools in Bangladesh

The escalation of NGO run schools in Bangladesh has emerged as a challenge to the hegemony of the religious fundamentalists groups, who were the traditional patrons of the religious schools or madrassas. Most NGO schools have maturad into thriving alternatives to the country’s weak and ineffective public education system; whereas, historically, it was the madrassas, which filled the void of public education through religious teachings. The NGO-run schools offer separate curricula, which are often rooted in the experiences to the working poor of Bangladesh. These non-formal primary education programs target the poor, especially girls, and offer flexible and shorter hours of offeration, often adjusted to seasonal and regional demands. Iwant to trace the evolution of such NGO-run schools as major contenders in the public exucation system and their role in confronting fundamentalism through their curricula and accessibillity in Bangladesh

Research in Public Administration: An Islamic Perspective

Research means process of systematically acquiring, processing and interpreting data to answer a question or solve a problem. The research that takes place in the discipline of public administration helps us to learn about administrative system and behaviour of public bureaucracy. The traditional concern of public administration is to ensure `efficiency‟ and `economy‟ in policy implementation, and programme management. On the other hand, Islam, which is based on Tawhid, emphasizes the values to be maximized in governmental affairs, are adle(Justice) and Ihsan(Welfare), even it means to sacrifice of `efficiency‟ and `economy‟ if the latters innately conflict with the former values. Therefore, Islamic public administration is an ideal to which all Muslim societies should strive to maximize. Unfortunately, almost all of the contemporary Muslim countries have structured their politico-administrative system based on exogenous models. This blind imitation of extant systems have not given the desired results due to environmental and cultural differences. Moreover, in the absence of Islamic values and ethics, modern organizations in the Muslim countries, which were evolved in response to science and technology and preoccupied with `efficiency‟ and `economy‟, reflect a myriad of problems ranging from inefficiency and corruption to formalism and overlapping, which further inhibit their performance. This failure of the align theories and models of organization, calls upon the Islamic scholars to re-examine their own culture and heritage for a possible alternative model or models that will replace the extant models of administration which do not suit Muslim culture or ideology
