Telomere length in relation to fecundability and use of assisted reproductive technologies: the Norwegian mother, father, and child cohort study
Background
Telomere length (TL) has been reported to be associated with conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, with some studies finding associations with shorter TL and others with longer TL. In men, studies mostly report associations between shorter TL and sperm quality. To our knowledge, no studies have thus far investigated associations between TL and fecundability or the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
Methods
This study is based on the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort (MoBa) Study and uses data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN). We included women (24,645 with genotype data and 1054 with TL measurements) and men (18,339 with genotype data and 965 with TL measurements) participating between 1998 and 2008. We investigated associations between leukocyte TL (LTL) and fecundability (defined as the probability to conceive within a given menstrual cycle), infertility (defined has having spent 12 months or more trying to conceive without success), and ART use. We also repeated the analyses using instrumental variables for LTL consisting of genetic risk scores for LTL and genetically predicted LTL.
Results
Approximately 11% of couples had experienced infertility and 4% had used ART. LTL was not associated with fecundability in women (fecundability ratio [FR], 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.92–1.04) or men (FR, 0.99; CI, 0.93–1.06), nor with infertility in women (odds ratio [OR], 1.03; CI, 0.85–1.24) or men (OR, 1.05; CI, 0.87–1.28). We observed an increased likelihood of using ART with increasing LTL in men (OR, 1.22; CI, 1.03–1.46), but not in women (OR, 1.10; CI, 0.92–1.31). No significant associations were observed using the instrumental variables for LTL.
Conclusions
We found no indication that LTL is a suitable biomarker for assessing fecundability, infertility, or ART use. Additional studies are required to replicate the association observed between LTL and ART use in men.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Semiparametric modeling for the cardiometabolic risk index and individual risk factors in the older adult population: A novel proposal
The accurate monitoring of metabolic syndrome in older adults is relevant in terms of its
early detection, and its management. This study aimed at proposing a novel semiparametric
modeling for a cardiometabolic risk index (CMRI) and individual risk factors in older adults.
Methods: Multivariate semiparametric regression models were used to study the associa-
tion between the CMRI with the individual risk factors, which was achieved using secondary
analysis the data from the SABE study (Survey on Health, Well-Being, and Aging in Colom-
bia, 2015). Results: The risk factors were selected through a stepwise procedure. The
covariates included showed evidence of non-linear relationships with the CMRI, revealing
non-linear interactions between: BMI and age (p< 0.00); arm and calf circumferences
(p<0.00); age and females (p<0.00); walking speed and joint pain (p<0.02); and arm circum-
ference and joint pain (p<0.00). Conclusions: Semiparametric modeling explained 24.5% of
the observed deviance, which was higher than the 18.2% explained by the linear model.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

From heritage tourism to sun and beach destinations: The explanatory role of enviromental factors on the average daily rate.
Purpose - This study aims to analyse whether the impact of external factors on the average daily rate (ADR) varies according to the type of destination. The study measures the effects of length of stay, share of international tourism and seasonality on hotel rates for sun and beach tourism, city tourism and heritage destinations. Methodology/Design/Approach - We collected monthly data from January 2021 to June 2023 and conducted a regression analysis to measure how international tourism, length of stay or seasonality differ by destination type and what impact these factors have on ADR. The data refers to the 106 tourist destinations defined by the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE). Findings - Increasing the length of stay has a positive effect on ADR for cultural heritage destinations. In all types of destinations, a higher share of international tourism increases ADR, but the effect is particularly strong for city tourism. Greater seasonality is associated with higher hotel prices and is particularly relevant for sun and beach destinations. Originality of the research -A better understanding of ADR determinants, depending on the different destination types, is important for hotel managers and those designing tourism policies at destination level.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The primary goal of this study is to analyze and track a cognitive-behavioral intervention
among a group of adolescents aged 13 to 15 diagnosed with an eating disorder. The key
themes addressed during the sessions include body dissatisfaction, social pressure, selfawareness, self-esteem, self-concept, emotions, family and peer relationships, and social
functioning. Weekly group sessions, totaling 11, were conducted within the child and
adolescent mental health center. Participants also attended the center once or twice a month
for visits with the nurse and/or referring psychologist. The analysis of each session and the
EDI 3 psychological test administered before and after the group sessions reveals that, by the
end of the intervention, the patients demonstrated and improved profile compared to their
initial state. In conclusion, despite initial difficulties stemming from the disorder and
resistance from some participants before the commencement of the group, the sessions were
successfully conducted. The emphasis was on creating a safe and enjoyable environment
within the group space. This approach proved essential in facilitating sessions, addressing
initial psychological scale challenges, and achieving the treatment objectives
Sex differences in the effects of N-ethylpentylone in young CD1 mice: Insights on behaviour, thermoregulation and early gene expression
Background and purpose: New psychoactive substances such as N-ethylpentylone (NEP) are continuously emerging in the illicit drug market, and knowledge of their effects and risks, which may vary between sexes, is scarce. Our present study compares some key effects of NEP in male and female mice.
Experimental approach: Psychostimulant, rewarding and reinforcing effects were investigated by tracking locomotor activity, conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm and through a self-administration (SA) procedure, respectively, in CD1 mice. Moreover, the expression of early genes (C-fos, Arc, Csnk1e, Pdyn, Pp1r1b and Bdnf in addiction-related brain areas) was assessed by qPCR. Finally, serum and brain levels of NEP were determined by UHPLC-MS/MS.
Key results: NEP-treated males experimented locomotor sensitisation and showed higher and longer increases in locomotion as well as higher hyperthermia after repeated administration than females. Moreover, while preference score in the CPP was similar in both sexes, extinction occurred later, and reinstatement was more easily established for males. Female mice self-administered more NEP than males at a higher dose. Differences in early gene expression (Arc, Bdnf, Csnk1e and Ppp1r1b) were found, but the serum and brain NEP levels did not differ between sexes.
Conclusion and implications: Our results suggest that male mice are more sensitive to NEP psychostimulant and rewarding effects. These differences may be attributed to different early gene expression but not to pharmacokinetic factors. Moreover, males appear to be more vulnerable to the hyperthermic effects of NEP, while females might be more prone to NEP abuse.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Size-selective trapping and photocatalytic degradation of PFOA in Fe-modified zeolite frameworks
Removal and destruction of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are challenging due to its extreme persistence and dilute concentrations. This study investigated dual-function adsorptive-photocatalytic zeolite materials to selectively adsorb and degrade PFOA via tuning pore structures and doping transition metals. It is found that the pore opening is critical in the size-selective trapping of PFOA, while the iron doped zeolites present excellent adsorption of PFOA (>80 mg g−1) combining hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. The formation of PFOA-iron complexes has reduced bond dissociation energy of C−F, calculated from density functional theory, for favorable stepwise defluorination (over 60% defluorination in 4 hours) by superoxide radicals and ligand-to-metal charge transfer. This mechanistic investigation extends the potential of the concentrate-and-degrade concept to remove PFOA selectively and effectively from contaminated water.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

High-Compression Crash Simulations and Tests of PLA Cubes Fabricated Using Additive Manufacturing FDM with a Scaling Strategy
Impacts due to drops or crashes between moving vehicles necessitate the search for energy absorption elements to prevent damage to the transported goods or individuals. To ensure safety, a given level of acceptable deceleration is provided. The optimization of deformable parts to absorb impact energy is typically conducted through explicit simulations, where kinetic energy is converted into plastic deformation energy. The introduction of additive manufacturing techniques enables this optimization to be conducted with more efficient shapes, previously unachievable with conventional manufacturing methods. This paper presents an initial approach to validating explicit simulations of impacts against solid cubes of varying sizes and fabrication directions. Such cubes were fabricated using PLA, the most used material, and a desktop printer. All simulations could be conducted using a single material law description, employing solid elements with a controlled time step suitable for industrial applications. With this approach, the simulations were capable of predicting deceleration levels across a broad range of impact configurations for solid cubes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
