Metaphysical deterrents to providers’ participation in the sharing economy: The role of peer-to-peer contagion

Despite the rising popularity of peer‐to‐peer sharing platforms, very little empiricalresearch has documented how consumers respond to the opportunity of rentinggoods to one another. This work delineates how metaphysical (besides physical)contagion beliefs, particularly when self‐identification with possessions is high, de-motivates people from renting out their possessions in P2P platforms. We claim andempirically test that (1) others’ physical contact hinders willingness to share a pos-session due to an anticipated threat to its essence and that (2) the possession'semotional link with the owner's identity amplifies this effect. Online and laboratoryexperiments provide evidence for these effects in isolation from physical contami-nation concerns. This research extends the research on peer‐to‐peer sharing bydemonstrating detrimental effects of beliefs in essence threat and a possible miti-gation tactic.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sustainable Development Goals-Based Prospective Process Design Using Hybrid Modeling

Replacing fossil technologies with renewable carbon-based technologies is of vital importance for the development of sustainable chemical processes in the future. However, impacts beyond climate change should be carefully evaluated to ensure that this transition to defossilized chemicals is truly sustainable. Here, we develop a framework for sustainable process design that explicitly accounts for the performance attained in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is computed using standard life cycle assessment (LCA) metrics alongside the planetary boundaries (PBs) concept. We apply this approach to design a CO2 hydrogenation to methanol process, where economic and SDGs-based performance are the objectives optimized. We show that the environmentally optimal design reduces the impact on SDG 13 (climate action) substantially relative to the business-as-usual (BAU) fossil counterpart, yet this is done at the expense of worsening other categories. A prospective LCA reveals that such collateral damage will be drastically reduced in the future due to improvements in a range of economic sectors. Overall, this work highlights the need to embrace impacts beyond climate change in process design and the advantages of using hybrid surrogates to expedite the computation of Pareto designs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Regulation of mitochondrial apoptosis via siRNA-loaded metallo-alginate hydrogels: A localized and synergistic antitumor therapy

Preventing relapse after resection of a primary tumor continues to be an unmet clinical need. Development of adjuvant biomaterials with the capacity to kill residual cancer cells after tumor resection is of clinical importance. Here we developed a library of metallo-alginate hydrogels containing high concentrations of metallic ions such as Ca2+ in combination with Zn2+, Li+, or Mg2+ to disrupt Ca2+ homeostasis in the mitochondria of cancer cells by local hyperthermia. To synergistically kill tumor cells and suppress the growth of rechallenged tumors, we embedded oncogene-silencing nucleic acids (mTOR siRNA) loaded into polymerc nanoparticles (NPs) composed of poly (β-amino esters) in the metallo-alginate hydrogels, targeting cancer cells that activate multi-drug resistance pathways such PI3K/AKT/mTOR. Metabolomic studies showed alterations in the Warburg effect, mitochondrial transport, and the TCA cycle, confirming cancer cell damage. In vivo studies of this targeted therapy in mice demonstrated a sex-dependent effect. Male B16F10-tumor-bearing mice treated with the synergistic therapy showed restrained tumor growth. In contrast, no therapeutic effect was observed in female counterparts. Our results demonstrate that in situ-formed NP-loaded metallo-alginate hydrogels can modulate two distinct immune signaling networks that are relevant for enhancing cancer cell death. On the basis of our findings, this combination therapy emerges as a promising sex-dependent strategy for clinical translation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Green infrastructure for reintegrating fragmented urban fabrics: Multiscale methodology using space syntax and hydrologic modeling

Green infrastructure (GI) plays a critical role in addressing urban fragmentation and flood vulnerability, especially in rapidly expanding cities where its optimal placement is essential to maximize social, ecological, and economic benefits. This study presents a multiscale methodology integrating spatial configuration and hydrological modeling to guide GI implementation in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The approach applies space syntax theory, fuzzy logic, and geospatial analysis across three spatial levels. At the city scale, the method evaluates street network integration and service accessibility to identify urban centers with potential for regeneration through GI. At the local scale, a 214-hectare area is analyzed using fuzzy multi-criteria decision analysis and Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) to select the optimal locations for different nature-based solutions. At the microscale, spatiotemporal hydrological simulations of a 25-year return period rainfall event quantify the runoff and infiltration dynamics under different GI configurations, achieving infrastructure layouts that infiltrated over 1000 m3 of stormwater. This framework addresses the research gap on how connectivity and morphology can be combined to prioritize interventions based on flood risk data. The results offer a transferable strategy for integrating Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDSs) into complex datascarce urban environments, supporting long-term urban resilience and multifunctional land-use planning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Determinants of early smartphone ownership: a research gap in the study of problematic smartphone use in children and adolescents

Over the past decade, a significant body of research has focused on problematic smartphone use and smartphone addiction among children and adolescents. Much of this research focuses on the negative consequences of smartphone use. Still, it assumes universal adoption of this technology without questioning the age of acquisition or without paying attention to the determinants of early smartphone ownership. Through a systematic review of 1053 scientific publications, a gap in the existing literature was identified: only 14 studies (1.3%) address the topic of smartphone ownership in children and adolescents—some of them identifying it as a predictor of future problematic smartphone use—and among them, only 8 of these studies (0.8%) explore the factors associated with early smartphone ownership, covering a population of n = 12,912 individuals. According to the results of this review, at least four factors emerge as relevant to understanding early smartphone ownership: peer pressure combined with fear of social exclusion, household characteristics (having multiple children, parental separation, free internet access at home, the use of electronic devices during meals, parental age, and parental education level), perceived adolescent’s maturity and parental concerns about safety and location. Other factors that may have an impact but need to be further explored are: gender differences and trust in tools to control use. Despite these identified factors, more research is needed to better understand their mixed relationships and their precise influence on parents’ choices. Our research highlights the need to expand the study of Early Smartphone Ownership as a research category. A deeper understanding of this issue is crucial to inform the policy debates currently taking place in many countries, as well as to guide parental strategies in building a new social consensus around smartphones and childhood.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

EngAGE4Change: Co-creating outdoor community spaces with care home residents and community-dwelling older adults to improve movement behaviour and reduce social isolation - A Health CASCADE study protocol

Objectives: To present and structure the use of co-creation as an overarching approach to position older adults—particularly care home residents and community-dwellers—and other key stakeholders as active decision-makers in an urban design and spatial planning project aimed at creating inclusive outdoor spaces. Study design: A multi-step, context-based, iterative protocol using co-creation for designing public spaces with older adults. Methods: A structured co-creation process engaged 20 older adults (both care home residents and communitydwellers), along with 3 family members, 2 health professionals, 2 caregivers, 1 researcher, and 2 urban designers. The process included three phases: (1) exploratory stage for context assessment, (2) planning through a needs assessment, and (3) a co-creation core for public space ideation and prototyping. AR and VR technologies were used to support spatial visualization and immersive prototyping. A mixed-methods evaluation assessed the co-creation process, including participant engagement and outcomes. Results: As a protocol paper, no empirical results are reported. However, the structure of the co-creation process, participant roles, and evaluation framework are detailed to guide implementation and inspiration for planning future projects using co-creation for urban design and healthy ageing. Conclusions: This protocol offers a transferable model for integrating co-creation into urban design and planning with older adults. It supports inclusive design and adds to the growing evidence on participatory methods for addressing complex urban health challenges.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Analysing the Effects of Organisational Politics on Nurses' Outcomes: The Moderating Role of Nurses' Professional Self-Concept

Aims: To analyse how organisational politics can affect behavioural responses such as organisational deviance and organisational citizenship behaviour towards the organisation among nurses. It also investigates the mediating effect of affective commitment between organisational politics and behavioural responses, and assesses the moderating effect of nurses' professional self-concept in the relationship between organisational politics and its outcomes. / Design: A cross-sectional study was performed among 229 nurses. / Methods: Data were collected between May and November 2019. The sample demonstrates its representativeness of the nursing population based on several demographic characteristics. / Results: The study reveals that organisational politics has a positive effect on organisational deviance and nurses' professional self-concept has a positive moderating effect on this relationship. Affective commitment mediates the relationship between organisational politics and organisational citizenship behaviour towards the organisation. / Conclusions: From a social exchange perspective, this research identifies the moderating role of nurses' professional self-concept in the relationship between organisational politics and organisational deviance. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, our study contributes to a better understanding of how the non-significant relationship between organisational politics and organisational citizenship behaviour towards the organisation is mediated by affective commitment. / Implications for the Profession: Nursing managers should pay special attention to organisational political perceptions among nurses with elevated professional self-concepts and address them through a collaborative organisational culture and clear norms to mitigate the adverse organisational consequences of organisational politics among nurses. In this sense, managers should actively listen and communicate effectively, as they represent the organisation's values. / No Patient or Public Contribution: No patient or public contribution was involved in this study. / Impact: The results of this study provided a better understanding of the organisational politics' effects among nurses on relational and behavioural responses and the moderating role of professional self-concept in these relationships.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Integrating policy agendas for sustainable innovation: a quadruple helix approach to the European Green Deal and sustainability transitions

This paper explores the integration of DIY (Do-It-Yourself) and crowdsourcing-driven innovation management with top-down policy frameworks to advance the European Green Deal and sustainability transitions. Drawing on the CASI (Common Framework for the Assessment and Management of Sustainable Innovation) project, it examines how CASI-F and its CASIPEDIA platform — a repository of over 700 sustainable innovation initiatives — can bridge local and global sustainability goals. Using a quadruple helix approach, the study highlights the role of innovation ecosystems in driving systemic change through the alignment of technological, economic, social, and environmental objectives. The paper compares the CASI SI agendas with the European Green Deal and sustainability transition agendas, identifying synergies, gaps, and opportunities for further alignment. Foresight is emphasised as a crucial tool to ensure innovation strategies remain adaptable, future-oriented, and resilient to emerging challenges. The findings underscore the importance of integrating grassroots innovations into broader policy frameworks to enhance sustainability transitions. Lastly, the paper recommends strengthening the Green Deal by fostering innovations from diverse actors, including those from the quadruple helix, and promoting the application of SMART foresight processes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
