The stitch project: Traces of diapraxis and al masha within participatory textile projects
In this article, I shall discuss participation – the artist's role and responsibility in participation, and the potentials of participatory textile projects in the public space. In doing so, I will focus on The stitch project (2012–). This project involves public interaction through acts of tactile textile making such as stitching on a tablecloth. I have based this study within a context of understanding matter and the embodiment of participation from feminist (Ahmed, 2006; Butler, 1988) and new materialist (Barad, 2003; Coole & Frost, 2010; Garber, 2019) perspectives. I am interested in the interactive aspects of The stitch project and how these aspects relate to the concepts of diapraxis (Nunes, 2019) and al masha (Hilal & Petti, 2018). In regard to these terms, I aim to examine the potentials and challenges of participatory textile art projects, like The stitch project, by examining their social and material aspects as well as the complexities of inclusion and participation.publishedVersio
The relationship between interaction mindsets and language teachers’ self-development practices
Self-development is a crucial aspect of language teaching as it fosters various dimensions of language teacher cognition, affect, and identity, ultimately contributing to better learning outcomes. Most studies on language teacher self-development have examined language teachers’ cognitive, affective, and identity-related reactions to particular programmes, often exploring variables in isolation. They have also rarely investigated the self-development practices teachers undertake to support their language teaching ability (LTA). This article reports the findings from a quantitative study on the self-development practices implemented by 113 foreign language teachers of English, French, German, and Spanish in tertiary education to sustain and augment their LTA. Adopting a complex dynamic systems approach, the study employed an online questionnaire to ascertain how variables such as participants’ anxiety, beliefs about the status enjoyed by their taught languages among the university administration, colleagues, and society, multilingualism, study and teaching abroad experiences, education level, and interaction mindsets influenced their LTA-related self-development practices. The findings revealed that only participants’ interaction mindsets statistically significantly predicted such practices. The article discusses the implications of these results for teacher educators, researchers, and educational institutions, and provides recommendations for the way forward.publishedVersio
A driving force behind my master's project is that public health and life skills should be implemented in all subjects in primary school and should contribute to students being able to strengthen their resources to enable coping with adversity. There seems to be less research that deals with the use of clay in teaching from a public health and life-skill perspective and from a preventive and health-promoting perspective. The purpose of this project is to increase insight, knowledge and understanding of how art and craft teachers may use the material clay to contribute to strengthening the pupils coping and resources while in primary school. The master thesis has an a/r/tographic, art-based methodological approach where "researcher", "teacher" and "ceramist" has a three-dimensional role from a hermeneutic-phenomenological scientific position. Data collection was through participant observation and informal conversations with pupils (5th-7th grade). Theoretical perspectives used were salutogenesis, "empowerment" and coping capabilities. The results showed how primary school pupils experienced and perceived the use of the material clay in arts and crafts teaching, and in what way teachers could contribute to strengthening primary school pupils' coping with life from a preventive and health-promoting perspective. Furthermore, how I as a "teacher" have planned the teaching, and organized exploration of the material. The results showed that creative subjects in primary school could possibly increase self-confidence and self-efficacy in pupils. As such, these results could have a positive effect on challenges and hardships later in life, especially regarding school and mental health. These pupils have experienced that using the material clay in art and craft teaching has led to the learning of new skills, and the joy of mastery. These results support previous research and empirical evidence and illustrate how clay work in school may strengthen primary school pupils' ability to cope with life. It is advantageous if art and craft teachers practice the use of clay in their lessons for junior pupils form a health promoting perspective
Kreativitet i læreplanverket for Kunnskapsløftet 2020.
Opening the heart: exploring the interpersonal neurobiology of spiritual practices suitable for public education
Modern education has prioritised the intellectual dimension, while giving insufficient attention to children’s emotional and spiritual development. This article offers an interdisciplinary understanding of how public education can nurture spirituality and the human capacities for compassion and love, also called the ‘qualities of the heart’. The paper explores the interpersonal neurobiology that underlies ‘heart opening’ spiritual practices, conceptualised as both spiritual and neurobiological phenomena. I discuss the scientific foundations for spiritual practices that can be suitable for education in secular public schools. Starting with my own empirical research in transpersonal psychology, the paper brings together research in interpersonal neurobiology with perspectives from spiritual traditions of yoga and meditation. The aim is to contribute to developing a framework for pedagogical practices that helps children develop their spirituality and loving and compassionate relationships, and feel more connected to themselves, others and the world, suitable for promoting children’s spiritual development through religious education, moral education, and life skills education in secular public schools.publishedVersio
Med Carol Bacchis What´s the Problem Represented to be tilnærming undersøkes to problemrepresentasjoner: Behovet for bærekraftige læreplasser, og behovet for bærekraftig karriereveiledning.
This master's thesis examines what is at stake when apprenticeships and career guidance 'softly push' young unskilled people into green and social transitions. Using Carol Bacchi's What´s the Problem Represented to be approach two problem representations are examined: The need for sustainable apprenticeships, and the need for sustainable career guidance. Inspired by Michel Foucault's governmentality perspective and a post-structuralist scientific theoretical point of view, the WPR approach brings out discourses in the world of apprenticeships and career guidance that find common ground in the various policies. The governmentality perspective brings out how apprenticeships and career guidance can contribute to young unskilled in green and social transitions by 'softly pushing' the young towards greener career-self-management. The young people are guided to career-self-management, to further develop greener apprenticeships and a greener society, hence, to manage their own sustainable career-development.
Tensions between Dark green (Ecologism), with societal changes, and progressive individual changes vs. Light green (Environmentalism) with more conservative societal changes and liberal individual changes are of great importance in the discourses. Dark green and Light green approaches to career guidance are made available in policy visions, but it is difficult to adopt the entire green spectrum when most small and medium businesses and apprenticeships have not yet started a green transition. Norwegian apprenticeships are with the UN's 'Education for sustainable development' in the ‘afterburn’ of Norwegian oil production, where Norwegian oil production appears as a direct obstacle to the rise of Dark green ideologies in the Norwegian world of work, in education and apprenticeships, and society in general. Summarized; sustainable apprenticeships are more Light green and technologically positivist, and Dark green apprenticeships, which consider all living things and the planet earth, without economic motives, belong to the future. This master's thesis points, in the discussion and conclusion, to some possibilities where sustainable development pushes forward increased justice, more empowerment and more emancipatory discourses in the problem representations, the need for sustainable apprenticeships, and the need for sustainable career guidance
Take Action, Recover Well? The Role of Daily Proactive Recovery Strategies for Recovery, Stress, Affect, and Next-Day Performance
Although both employee wellbeing and performance are valued by organizations, achieving them conjointly is not simple in practice. Prior studies have highlighted the role of daily experiences of recovery from work stress for employee wellbeing and performance. In a work-life characterized by pressures to intensify the pace of work, employees may increasingly use proactive efforts to shape their daily off-job time to effectively recover from stress and maintain their wellbeing and performance. Based on the integrative needs model of crafting, effort-recovery model, and conservation of resources theory as guiding frameworks, we examine whether employees’ daily proactive recovery strategies predict daily off-job and work stress, affect, and subjective work performance through enhanced recovery experiences. Daily diary measurements were collected among a sample of 377 Norwegian employees across a period of two weeks in early 2022 (from Monday to Thursday, i.e., eight measurement days in total). Results of Bayesian multilevel models showed that crafting for detachment, for relaxation, and for autonomy during off-job time negatively predicted off-job stress and negative affect through matching recovery experiences, whereas crafting for mastery positively predicted positive affect through mastery experiences. Crafting for relaxation and for autonomy were directly negatively related to next-day work stress, but these effects were not mediated by matching recovery experiences. Crafting for autonomy positively predicted next-day self-rated work performance through control experiences. Our study contributes to the literature on recovery from work by highlighting proactive recovery strategies as important initiators of daily recovery processes.publishedVersio
Gender based exclusion of Bangladeshi transgender “Hijra” community from job sector
In Bangladesh, the Hijra is a large community of third gender people, mostly consisting of male-to-female transgender persons as well as eunuchs or men who had their genitals removed. These Hijras are often a time excluded from various job opportunities. This has led to poor living standards among the Hijras. This research study was initiated to investigate the current employment situation of the Hijras, exploring the key obstacles Hijra community face while going thorough recruitment procedures or while stay on a job, investigating the discrepancy between the current Hijras means of employments vis-à-vis what Hijras would like to take as a profession if given a level playing field devoid of any gender-based exclusion or social discrimination, and lastly, assessing if Hijras' current means of income is non-traditional and non-conforming to society and how this means of employment undermine their rights as a human being. To achieve this, the study relied on social exclusion-related theories (Islam and Morgan, 2012), system theory (Schirmer and Michailakis, 2015), and advocacy theory (Payne, 2005) and had a total of 13 participants comprising of 5 individuals from the NGOs, 6 unemployed Hijras, and 2 ordinary social workers drawn from the Hijra community. The study found that most Hijra members fail to get jobs in the Bangladeshi job sectors due to their peculiar lifestyle and lack of education. This is because the Hijras in Bangladesh have no religious, constitutional, social, or legal rights, which ensure equal opportunities in social development. The study also found that lack of legal recognition through a legal policy is one of the fundamental factors that has hindered Hijras' rights in the education and therefore job sector. Most Hijras cannot acquire quality education because of people's negligence, policies, and discrimination institutions. The physical appearance of Hijra members and their behaviors subjected them to different facets of exclusion in the learning institution
