“We will talk about that later” - An interaction analysis of simulation-based training debriefings in nursing education

    No full text
This master’s thesis focuses on debriefings after simulation-based training in nursing education. The aim is to explore in detail how educator and student interactions are played out while students are required to reflect upon their reactions in simulation events. The post-reflective debriefing conversation is often named “the heart and soul” of simulations (Rall et al., 2000) and is led by a facilitator to support and find ways to assist students in achieving the learning goals. “PEARLS” is a framework often used to structure the debriefing session (Sawyer et al., 2016, p. 212). This master's thesis uses video data from the PROSIM project, where the facilitators used the PEARLS framework, which consists of the four phases reaction, description, analysis and summary. It has been documented that facilitators often move quickly during the reaction phase by glossing over the students’ initial reactions, jumping into their own agenda of the debriefing (Cheng et al., 2016, p. 421). Little research has investigated how and why the activity of facilitating is carried out in concrete terms (Keiser & Arthur, 2021). The research questions are: 1) How do facilitators frame the reaction phase of debriefings inviting students to reflect upon their performances during simulated exercises and 2) in what ways do the facilitators framing open or close students' ways of making themselves accountable to the learning goals of the scenarios/debriefings? An ethnographic approach was used to collect the data, through video recordings of 30 debriefings at a bachelor program in a Nordic university. A thematic analysis is used to structure the 30 hours of video recordings. Four prominent themes are found useful as analytical themes: how the facilitator phrases the questions, the facilitators interruptions of student’s reflections, the students’ answers containing academic reasoning, and the students’ answers containing emotional reasoning. Using an interaction analysis, the first two themes have been analysed in the context of how the facilitators frame the conversation using Goffman’s (1974) concept framing as my analytical lens. The two latter themes have been analysed in the context of Michaels, O’Connor and Resnick’s (2008) concepts accountable talk to analyse how the students are encouraged to show their understanding and justify their claims and actions during the reaction phase of simulation events. The main result document that the facilitators seem to be influenced by the use of the PEARLS manual, and that they frame the debriefings in various ways, using different formulations of questions, and seem to improvise their questions according to the students’ contributions, engagement and answers. This leads to a variation in the students’ answers of how well they reflect, share and elaborate. On the other hand, findings also document how the facilitators interpretation of PEARLS manual hinders valuable opportunities for students to be encouraged to share their understanding and justify their performative actions during the scenario. This leaves their reflections, claims and performances untouched as objects of dialogues and meaning-making.

    No full text

    Promoting Multilingualism in the Classroom

    No full text
Since the arrival of the ‘multilingual turn’ in language education in 2014 and the national curriculum in LK20, there is more focus on the topic of multilingualism amongst the language subjects in the Norwegian school system. However, there remains a gap between the theoretical view of how multilingualism should be enacted and what is practically taking place in the classrooms. In an attempt to provide a practical solution, a multilingual inductive-based language course was developed and taught for a three-week period across three language subjects in the eighth grade of a lower secondary school. After the course, a qualitative method and approach to data collection featuring semi-structured interviews, was utilised to gather the experiences of the teachers that taught the course. A second objective was also gathering the teachers’ beliefs around what obstacles there is to implement a multilingual approach in lower secondary schools. The main findings show that teachers experienced the multilingual course positively. The teachers appreciated the course’s focus on grammar concepts, the use of the inductive approach and that generally the course was a successful experience in promoting multilingualism. The interviews also highlighted several of the issues that hinder adopting a multilingual approach in lower secondary schools. The well-known problems around finding time, organisation and planning were voiced as well as a lack of collaboration amongst language subjects and teachers, as well as the opinion that the competence aims for the various subjects do not promote the multilingual approach. This thesis ultimately argues that providing materials such as the language course developed for this project, could help resolve certain of these issues and help promote a practical approach to multilingualism in the lower secondary school

What matters more for work motivation? Compensation or work design?

    No full text
A substantial body of literature has examined the impact of both pay and work design characteristics on workplace outcomes and the quality of motivation but rarely have these predictors been compared. Given that the design of work is naturally related to the design of pay, we examined their relative contributions to explaining variance in work motivation, and, in turn, performance and well-being outcomes. Data from three field studies revealed that work design accounted for more variance in motivation, well-being, adaptive, and proactive performance than pay characteristics. Moreover, variable pay, once controlling for work design, had mostly small but negative relations with employee outcomes, which stands in contrast to previous research findings that have not controlled for work design. Not taking work design into account when studying the effects of pay and extrinsic rewards may lead to erroneous conclusions about how much weight to put on pay as a motivator and could misdirect organizations into putting too many resources into the design of complex compensation systems, instead of paying attention to the design of work.publishedVersio

Undersøkelse av dietten hos ærfugl (Somateria mollissima) og svartbak (Larus marinus) i Tvedestrand: En eDNA-analyse

    No full text
This study used eDNA metabarcoding to investigate dietary composition in two seabird species with contrasting ecological roles: the great black-backed gull (Larus marinus), a generalist predator, and the common eider (Somateria mollissima), a benthic foraging specialist. Faecal samples were collected from 20 adult common eiders, 20 adult great black-backed gulls, and from gull chicks at four developmental stages during the breeding season (Day 5, 15, 25 and 35). The results revealed distinct dietary profiles between the species. Great black-backed gulls had a broad and varied diet including 32 prey species, with high individual variation and contributions from both marine and terrestrial sources such as fish, and human refuse. In contrast, common eiders showed a narrow prey spectrum with only 17 species detected, dominated by host DNA, and minimal evidence of fish consumption. Invertebrate prey were not detected in any samples, likely due to amplification failure of the Leray primer. Gull chick diets changed over time, with early samples resembling adult diets and later samples showing increased contributions from pelagic fish such as mackerel. These temporal shifts likely reflect seasonal changes in prey availability and increasing energetic demands with age. The findings demonstrate the value of combining dietary data from generalist and specialist species to monitor ecosystem change. eDNA proved to be a valuable non-invasive method for diet analysis, although certain limitations, such as DNA degradation and primer bias must be considered. Overall, this study contributes to knowledge on the feeding ecology of seabirds and highlights the potential of diet data to inform ecosystem-based conservation strategies

    No full text

    No full text
Background: This master`s thesis presents a qualitative study that explores healthcare professional’s experience with the use of VR headset in training, with a particular focus on the areas of clinical observation competence and the management of violence and threats. The study seeks to address the research question concerning which factors act as barriers or enablers of the adoption and use of VR headset in municipal healthcare services, considering individual, technological, and organizational aspects. Method: The empirical data is based om in-depth interviews with ten healthcare professionals from two different municipalities. The study uses Kolb`s learning cycle and elements from the TOE framework as the basis for analysis. Results: The majority of participants found VR to be a useful and engaging learning tool. They reported that the VR exercises contributed to increased knowledge of clinical observation and enhanced understanding and confidence in dealing with threatening patient situations. Reflection following the VR scenarios on violence and threats was highlighted as a particularly important factor for learning outcomes, as it promoted situational awareness and a shared understanding among staff. Most participants perceived the VR as realistic and engaging, although some reported physical discomfort during use. Enablers for adoption and use were primarily related to structured follow-up, clear leadership, and the presence of motivated superusers. Where management was actively involved, the use of VR was more widespread. Barries included lack of structure and leadership support, time constraints, and technological challenges, particularly related to infrastructure. Conclusion: VR shows clear potential as a valuable supplement in training for clinical observation and handling of violence and threats. However, technology cannot yet fully replace hands-on practice. To ensure sustainable use, organizational and technological barriers must be addressed

Nøkkelord: Utbrenthet, intensivsykepleiere, arbeidsmiljø, organisatoriske tiltak, forebyggingBackground: This literature review investigates how organizational measures can help prevent burnout among intensive care nurses. Working in a complex and high tech environment with constant high demands makes ICU nurses particularly vulnerable to stress, psychological strain, and reduced job satisfaction. Burnout in this group can have serious consequences for both staff well being and patient safety, which highlights the importance of addressing organizational solutions. Method: The study was conducted as a systematic literature review based on Aveyard’s methodology. Systematic searches were performed in Cinahl, PubMed, Medline, and Oria in the autumn of 2024. Five studies were included one qualitative and four quantitative. The data material was analyzed thematically. Results: The analysis identified four key themes: Staffing and workload, Leadership support and work environment, Recognition and job satisfaction, and Professional development and job rotation. The findings show that inadequate staffing, high workload, and lack of support are key risk factors for burnout. Protective factors include visible and supportive leadership, collegial support, opportunities for professional development, and recognition. These results are supported by the Job Demands Resources (JD-R) model and Maslach’s theory of burnout, both of which emphasize the importance of balancing demands and available resources. Conclusion: Organizational factors are highly influential in the well-being and mental health of intensive care nurses. Preventing burnout should be integrated into leadership practices and quality improvement work in ICU settings. Measures that ensure sufficient staffing, professional support, and development opportunities should be prioritized. Further research is needed to explore how such interventions can be adapted to different ICU contexts in Norway and contribute to long-term retention in the profession. Keywords: Burnout, intensive care nurses, work environment, organizational measures, preventio
