Når valden visest utanpå: animert kroppsspråk i Sinna Mann
Systematisk elektrofiske viste at det her forekommer enkelte større gytefisk.publishedVersio
Foucault’s Social, Community, and Cultural Psychology
In today’s debate about a user oriented humanistic turn in the field of mental health care, the early Foucault is once again relevant. In his works from 1954 Foucault shows that the root of understanding mental phenomena is not to be found in universal medical concepts and methods, but in the reflection on lived experiences and in the human being itself. In accordance with contemporary social, community, and cultural psychologists, such as Brinkmann, Kinderman and Prilleltensky, Foucault is critical to the psychology’s medical foundations. Instead of focusing on medical and physiological matters he suggests that psychology, as a discipline, should be more user oriented, and focus more on the human being itself, and on social and cultural contexts.publishedVersio
Microelectronic Metallurgical Bonding under Extreme Temperatures
The objective of this research project is to further refine and explore existing and possibly new solid-liquid interdiffusion (SLID) systems. The focus of the project was placed on SLID systems which can withstand high temperatures and SLID systems which can be bonded at low temperatures. With this focus considered, the intermetallic systems selected and studied were Ag-(In-Bi) for low temperature bonding and Ni-Sn for high temperature stability.
The system Ag-(In-Bi) provided a unique possibility due to limited prior research [1]. With the potential to provide bonding at temperatures as low as 72 ℃, the system addresses the need to join piezo-electric materials (PEM) at temperatures lower than the Curie temperature, eliminating the need for costly magnetic re-poling and improving acoustic coupling [2].
The contributions to the knowledge of metal bonding from the research involving the Ag- (In-Bi) SLID bonding are the following:
1. SLID bonding of Ag-(In-Bi)
i) The first micrographs and description of the Ag-(In-Bi) SLID system.
ii) Demonstrated bonding at 150 ℃ with an In-Bi foil of 78.5at% In, where the bonds can be theoretically stable to ⁓480–570°C.
iii) Discovery of Bi precipitation below the original bonding surfaces.
iv) Statistical evidence showing gravity does not affect the precipitation distribution.
The Bi precipitations required further exploration to determine their cause, and this led to the publication for solid-state bonding of Ag-(In-Bi). This had the additional advantage of demonstrating even lower bonding temperatures. The scientific contributions are the following:
2. Solid-state bonding of Ag-(In-Bi)
i) The first micrographs and description of solid-state bonding with Ag-(In-Bi)
ii) Demonstrated low temperature bonding at 65 ℃ with an In-Bi foil of 78.5-at% In and 95-at% In, where the bonds can be theoretically stable to ⁓166 °C.
iii) Showed dissolution is required for the unique Bi precipitation which occurred in the Ag-(In-Bi) SLID system.
The interest in high temperature stability is due to new developments in sapphire-based systems which can perform at temperatures above 1000 ℃. The Ni-Sn intermetallic system has been demonstrated by many works to provide significant temperature stability. The conference paper “Ni–Sn SLID bonds for assembly at extremely high temperatures“ attempted to create a homogenized bond of only Ni3Sn2 to provide the high temperature stability. The scientific contributions are the following:
3. SLID bonding of Ni–Sn
i) Demonstrated bonding at 285 °C, where the bonds can be theoretically stable to ⁓798 °C. Further annealing of these bonds achieved various intermetallics of even higher temperature stability.
ii) Based on finite element modelling, Pt was proposed as a candidate to better match the CTE values between Ni and Si compared to the W layer which was used in experimentation.
Ultimately the main goal was not achieved in the Ni-Sn bonding due to small bonding times and temperatures. However significant voiding was seen to occur at the middle of the bond lines where impingement due to inter-metallic growth occurred. The cause and reduction of voiding is always a concern for SLID bonding and the explanation of these particular voids prompted the third main publication “Solid-liquid interdiffusion stresses leading to voiding“, which examined the pressure development within the encapsulated liquid Sn pockets. Within this paper the following was achieved:
4. SLID stresses leading to voiding
iii) Performed a theoretical study on volumetric voiding in the Ni-Sn system showing the theoretical pressure development within constrained liquid pockets. This showed sufficient pressure to initiate cavitation.
iv) Performed a molar volume balance of the Ni-Sn SLID system to determine the volumetric changes. A difference between this value and the thermodynamically calculated value was found.
v) If unwettable inclusions are absent cavitation and growth expansion should occur, otherwise the proposed voiding model is some combination of expansion of bifilms and growth due to vacancies.publishedVersio
Cyber-Physical Convergent Information Communication Technologies for Control and Protection Functionalities in Energy Systems
The transition towards a zero-CO2 emission system requires numerous transformations in modern energy systems to achieve this goal. These changes primarily involve not only the integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) but also the incorporation of digitalisation due to the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). This paradigm shift goes beyond traditional technologies, bringing breakthroughs to the energy infrastructures through state-of-the-art technologies. One of the clear pieces of evidence for this development is the transformation of conventional energy systems into cyber-physical energy and power systems (CPEPS). In CPEPS, there is a deep coupling between two layers, the physical and cybernetic layers. The physical layer represents realworld components, while the cyber layer involves ICTs with the purpose of monitoring and controlling the physical systems.
In the physical layer, protection and control devices are traditional independent components, each operating with its own set of algorithms and objectives. Integrating these protection and control mechanisms within a centralised cybernetic layer, along with advanced technologies (for example, virtualisation, communication technologies, AI support decision-making, etc.), can benefit the physical systems, such as increasing the system efficiency (requiring fewer devices by combining functionalities) or reducing the total cost (fewer components, fewer losses, fewer data, and energy transformation steps).
However, integrating these independent technologies has faced many operational challenges due to the complexity and different nature of both functionalities. One such major challenge is ensuring the reliability and robustness of integrated systems, as any malfunction or failure could have cascade consequences. Both protection and control functionalities necessitate the development of advanced algorithms capable of handling large amounts of data, providing decision-making, and having the potential to develop in the future.
This PhD thesis delves into a cyber-physical convergent purpose technology, where a set of independent technologies (protection/controllers, virtualisation, digital communication technologies, etc.) is integrated into the cyber layer to address the challenges arising at the physical layer. The research investigates the dynamic behaviours of the energy and power systems regarding the high integration of RES. The studies highlight the advancement of modelling techniques, control, and protection algorithms, as well as the adaptability of existing technologies aiming for future wide-area monitoring, protection, and control. The core focus of the PhD study is the experimental performances at the DIgEnSys-Lab, a smart grid laboratory located at USN, campus Porsgrunn. Within the laboratory facilities, the virtualised environment is constructed for both protection and control functionalities to perform research, tests, and validations. Furthermore, by leveraging the capability to exchange data through communication protocols via Local Area Network (LAN), the CPEPS testbeds are utilised to conduct research in modern energy systems. Additionally, the real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop methods also strengthen the PhD research by validating proposed protection and control algorithms and enhancing substations’ device configuration settings.
In summary, this PhD thesis offers a comprehensive exploration of CPEPS technology with a focus on control and protection functionalities. Under the uncertainties inherent in power grids, the research work plays a part in opening a new horizon for the development of control and protection strategies. In addition, the findings contribute to the ongoing efforts in decarbonisation, digitalisation, and the broader transition towards sustainable energy systems. The PhD research helps address global energy challenges and contributes to fulfilling UN Goal 7, aiming for affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy systems.publishedVersio
A Comparative Study of Oil Production with Reservoir Simulators
The growing demand for efficient oil recovery from complex reservoirs has pushed the oil industry to adopt advanced well technologies. One of the critical challenges in horizontal well completion is the early gas breakthrough as unwanted fluids which can significantly reduce oil recovery performance and make shorter the productive life of a well. This issue is particularly prominent in heterogeneous reservoirs, where variations in rock properties lead to uneven fluid flow and the early entrance of gas into high-permeability zones.
To address this, the study evaluated the performance of three types of inflow control devices under different reservoir conditions scenarios. Inflow control devices (ICD) work as passive devices that show limited response to fluid changes, while Autonomous Inflow Control Devices (AICD) introduce flow restrictions partially. Autonomous Inflow Control Valves (AICV) represent a more advanced technology with autonomous capabilities to adapt to reservoir changes by adjusting flow based on fluid properties.
The methodology involved dynamic simulation using the CMG software, focusing on three reservoir cases: a homogeneous formation, a reservoir with higher permeability at the toe, and one with higher permeability at the heel. These scenarios were designed to assess realistic reservoir heterogeneity and test the adaptability and effectiveness of each device. The main objective was to understand how each device manages gas breakthroughs and maintains oil production under different flow conditions. The study analyzed bottomhole pressure (BHP) behavior, gas oil ratio (GOR) trends, flow rate stability, and overall production efficiency. Through a detailed comparison of performance across the three cases, the study revealed key insights in the strengths and limitations of each inflow control strategy. One of the main achievements of this study is the demonstration of how autonomous inflow control technologies can improve long-term performance by adjusting to dynamic reservoir conditions. The simulations showed that AICVs offer a better balance between gas control and oil recovery, especially in heterogeneous environments. In contrast, passive devices like ICDs may perform adequately in uniform formations but struggle under variable conditions due to their inability to adapt in real-time
Evaluating Multithreading in Classic C++, C++17, C++20 and C++23: Execution Policies, Compiler Efficiency, and Migration with Copilot
This thesis evaluates the evolution and effectiveness of multithreading in the C++ pro- gramming language, specifically focusing on execution policies introduced in C++17, C++20, and C++23, compiler efficiency, and the role of AI-assisted coding through Git- Hub Copilot. The study compares traditional manual threading techniques against mod- ern parallel execution policies, analyzing their impact on the design, performance, and scalability of parallel algorithms. Through extensive performance benchmarking using profiling tools such as gprof, Linux perf, and Valgrind Massif, significant improvements in runtime and memory management are demonstrated when leveraging newer C++ stand- ards and execution policies. Compiler comparisons between GCC and Clang further reveal substantial differences in optimization capabilities, directly influencing multithreaded ap- plication performance. Additionally, the thesis assesses the readability, maintainability, and correctness of multithreaded code generated by GitHub Copilot, finding it largely ef- fective, though highlighting areas needing improvement in documentation and synchron- ization clarity. These insights collectively guide software developers in choosing efficient multithreading strategies, optimizing application performance, and facilitating smoother transitions to contemporary C++ standards

A historiographical analysis of the relationship between the United States and Israel
This master’s thesis presents a historiographical analysis of the United States’ relationship with Israel and how this relationship is portrayed in selected literature from the following authors: Noam Chomsky, John J. Mearsheimer & Stephen M. Walt, Rashid Khalidi, Michael B. Oren, Dennis Ross and Alan Dershowitz. These authors are carefully chosen as the paper seeks to give a broad view of the different narratives that encapsulate the relationship mentioned. The authors are acclaimed and renowned internationally to varying degrees, and many of their contributions have sparked highly charged discussions around the world. However, the books vary in academic depth - some offer deeper scholarly analysis (Chomsky, Mearsheimer & Walt, Khalidi), two take a more personal, political memoir approach combined with an insider perspective (Oren, Ross) and one is primarily advocacy-driven (Dershowitz). It is worth noting that Ross includes policy analysis and specific recommendations, which makes his book unique.
The relationship between the United States and Israel is a close and complex one, due to many factors, examined by numerous acclaimed works. Some of these works can be viewed as more critical, others more balanced, and some more positive or supportive in their outlook. Therefore, this thesis focuses on several renowned authors that explore this topic from different angles, presenting vastly different narratives and arriving at a range of proposed conclusions. There are varied interpretations of the historical events that have occurred throughout this, as some call it, “special relationship”.
Consequently, the thesis aspires to carefully examine and analyze the main arguments from each author. The chosen literature can help to shed light on this highly complex and intricate bond between these two powerful nations. Furthermore, this paper seeks to clarify why these authors arrive at different conclusions, based on how they interpret the historical developments of U.S. – Israeli relations. As the common expression states, “You always need to hear both sides of the story”
