Glimpse into Routine EMG Findings of Patients with Malign Neoplasms
Neurological complications in cancer patients may arise due to direct tumor effects, treatment-related toxicity, or paraneoplastic syn- dromes. Neurological complications in patients with neoplasms can affect all structures of the peripheral nervous system, either alone or in combination. We reviewed the electrodiagnostic test database of our EMG unit between 2017 and 2024. The clinical and electro- physiological data from 322 patients with cancer were collected. Descriptive statistics were reported and electrophysiological findings were compared between the two groups with the largest number of patients (gynecological and breast cancer groups). Among 322 patients, 189 (58.6%) had polyneuropathy, 21 (6.5%) had myopathy, 63 (19.5%) exhibited spinal root/anterior horn involvement, and 4 (1.2%) had plexopathy. Additionally, 19 patients developed nerve damage postoperatively, with spinal accessory nerve injury being the most common (63%). Electrophysiological findings related to anticancer drugs were detected in 57 patients (17.7%). Significant differences were found between gynecological and breast cancer groups regarding peroneal compound muscle action potential am- plitude (p= 0.007) and sural sensory nerve action potential amplitude (p= 0.03). To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report the routine EMG findings of patients with oncological and hematological diseases with a broad approach design. Patients with plexopathy, neuropathy, and myopathy were examined in combination. Therefore, our findings will provide valuable insights into the electrophysiological findings of patients with oncological and hematological diseases

Serebral Palsili Çocuklarda Duyusal İşlemleme Becerileri İle Günlük Yaşam Aktiviteleri Arasındaki İlişkisinin İncelenmesi
Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı serebral palsili (SP) çocuklarda duyusal işlemleme becerileri ve günlük yaşam aktiviteleri arasındaki ilişkinin incelemesiydi. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmaya Hacettepe Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi Ergoterapi Bölümü Pediatri Ünitesi’ne başvuran 14 SP’li çocuk dahil edildi. Günlük yaşam aktiviteleri Pediatrik Özürlülük Değerlendirme Envanteri (PÖDE) ile; duyusal işlemleme becerileri ise Duyu Profili (DP) ile değerlendirildi. Günlük yaşam aktiviteleri ve duyusal işlemleme becerileri arasındaki ilişki Spearman korelasyon katsayısı ile incelendi. Bulgular: SP’li 36-72 ay arası çocuklarda kendine bakım ile dokunma (r=0,786, p<0,05) ve duygusal ve sosyal cevaplar arasında (r=0,778, p<0,05) pozitif yönde yüksek derecede korelasyon ve sosyal fonksiyon ile oral duysal işlem arasında (r=0,829, p<0,05) arasında pozitif yönde çok yüksek derecede korelasyon tespit edildi. SP’li 73-120 ay arası çocuklarda sosyal fonksiyon ile çoklu duysal işlem (r=0,847, p<0,05) arasında pozitif yönde ve çok yüksek derecede; duygusal cevapları ve aktivite seviyesini etkileyen görsel girdilerin düzenlenmesi arasında (r=0,775, p<0,05) ise pozitif yönde yüksek derecede korelasyon tespit edildi. Sonuç: Serebral palsili çocuklarda duyusal işlemleme becerileri ile günlük yaşam becerileri arasında ilişki bulunmaktadır. Etkilenim alanları yaş gruplarına göre değişmektedir. Bu nedenle farklı yaş gruplarında duyusal işlemleme becerileri ile günlük yaşam becerileri arasındaki ilişkinin ileri istatistiksel yöntemlerle incelenmesi önerilmektedir.Objectives: The aim of this study to investigate the relationship between sensory processing and activities of daily living in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Material and Methods: Fourteen children with CP admitted to the Pediatric Unit of XX University Department of Occupational Therapy were included. Sensory processing skills were assessed by Sensory Profile (SP); activities of daily living were evaluated with Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). The relationship between activities of daily living (ADL) and sensory processing was examined with Spearman correlation coefficient. Results: There was a positive strong correlation between self-care and touch processing (r=0.786, p<0.05), emotional/social responses (r=0.778, p<0.05), a positive very strong correlation between social function and oral sensory processing (r=0.829, p<0.05) in children with CP aged 36-72 months. In children between CP aged 73- 120 months, there was a positive very strong correlation between social function and multisensory processing (r=0.847, p<0.05); a positive strong correlation between social function and modulation of visual input affecting emotional responses and activity level (r=0.775, p<0.05). Conclusion: Sensory processing difficulties were related with activities of daily living in children with CP and this relationship varies according to age groups. Therefore, examination of the relationship between sensory processing skills and ADL with advanced statistical methods in different age groups is recommended
Letter to editor: dual-energy computed tomography-based volumetric thyroid iodine quantification: correlation with thyroid hormonal status, pathologic diagnosis, and phantom validation
I read with great interest the article by Lee1, which presents a promising non-invasive method for quantifying intrathyroidal iodine concentration using dual-energy computed to- mography (DECT). Their study demonstrates that DECT-derived iodine maps can effectively distinguish between thyroid functional states and detect diffuse thyroid disease without the need for contrast enhancement. This approach holds particular promise in the peri-radioac- tive iodine (RAI) therapy setting, especially when applied both before and after treatment to monitor iodine organification
Determination of the P-T conditions and depths of magma storage zones for two distinct quaternary lava flows in the Southeast of Mount Ağrı (Eastern Anatolia, Turkey)
This study aims to determine the pressure (P)-temperature (T) conditions and depths of magma storage zones for two distinct lava flows located to the southeast of Mount Ağrı (5137 m), the highest stratovolcano in Turkey. The mineralogical–petrographic observations, whole-rock-trace and mineral chemistry, and geochronological (⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar dating) features of these lava flows were examined to provide the petrologic and temporal evolution of volcanic activity in the region. The flow referred to as Phase 1, with SiO₂ content ranging from 49.2% to 51.2%, was classified as trachybasalt, while the flow identified as Phase 2, with SiO₂ content between 62.42% and 63.4%, was classified as andesite. The whole-rock 40Ar/39Ar ages of samples from Phase 1 and Phase 2 were determined to be 57.70 ± 21.44 ka and 19.09 ± 5.59 ka, respectively. The older and more mafic Phase 1 flow displays a mineral assemblage of plagioclase + olivine ± oxide macrocrysts, microphenocrysts, and microlites. Conversely, the younger and more differentiated Phase 2 flow comprises a mineral assemblage of plagioclase + orthopyroxene ± clinopyroxene ± oxide macrocrysts, microphenocrysts, and microlites. Phase 1 is phaneritic with a scoriaceous texture and contains labradorite–composition plagioclase and Fo-rich olivine, whereas Phase 2 is aphanitic with a glassy texture, characterized by andesine–labradorite plagioclase, enstatite, and augite. EPMA analysis results and P-T calculations derived from equilibrated macrocrysts and microphenocrysts show that, assuming an average crustal density of 2.70 g/cm³, Phase 1 was emplaced at a depth of 38 km, with crystallization temperatures of 1186 °C from plagioclase data and approximately 1200 °C from olivine. In Phase 2, temperatures derived from plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and orthopyroxene are ~ 1128; 1147 and 1061 °C, with corresponding pressures of 8, 6, and 5 kbar, yielding calculated depths of 30 km, 23 km, and 19 km, respectively. These findings demonstrate that Phase 1 exhibits higher crystallization temperature, pressure, and depth values than Phase 2. Overall, the results reveal two distinct magma storage zones southeast of Mount Ağrı, active at different times during the Quaternary, which produced both mafic and intermediate volcanic products, with one located at a shallower and the other at a deeper level.</p

A Case of Distal Hereditary Motor Neuropathy with HSPB1 Mutation in Coexistence with Myotonia and Myopathy
Distal hereditary motor neuropathies (dHMNs), also named as distal spinal muscular atrophy, are a group of disorders that cause degeneration of motor nerves. Currently, only 15% to 32.5% of patients with dHMN have been genetically identified. The most common cause of dHMNs gene mutations is HSPB1 mutation. In HSPB1 mutation, which is also one of the myopathogens via satellite cell pathology, dHMNS may coexist with neuromuscular junction disorder, motor neuron disease, satellite cell dysfunction and therefore myopathic findings. No case of myopathy and myotonia with HSPB1 mutation has been reported in the literature yet. We present a case with electrophysiologic findings in HSPB1 mutation by discussing the possible mechanisms underlying myotonic discharges and myopathic findings
