    Get PDF
COVID-19 has been transforming education into technology-based and distance learning mode which requires the changing paradigm about learning delivery in higher education. This article aims to explicate learning engagement of students in higher education during online learning and to verify the impact of collaborative learning and personal perseverance on learning engagement statistically. Which of both two factors is more influential? Is collaborative learning more influential than personal perseverance or vice versa? A survey with causal analysis was applied for supporting arguments of this article. Data collection was conducted by distributing Google Form based questionnaires. It has involved about 642 students from a prominent private higher education institution in Indonesia as the respondents. For testing the twelve hypotheses, this article utilizes SmartPLS version 3.3 as statistical analysis tool. The result reveals that learning engagement that is reflected into cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement is more influenced by collaborative learning rather than personal perseverance. Collaborative learning which is reflected into cognitive skill and collaborative skill is essential factor in online learning. Emotional engagement is critical aspect of online learning which is not influence either by collaborative learning or personal perseverance. For engaging the student during online learning, higher educational institution should develop collaborative learning as a choice for pedagogical strategy in maintaining learning effectiveness during online learning

Occupational Well-Being: A Comparative Analysis of the Main Structural Models

    Get PDF
The analysis of the main models of the occupational well-being of the individual and their component composition revealed the absence of a generally accepted universal model. Existing differences in the ideas of researchers regarding the definition of the essence of occupational well-being and its components are caused, first of all, by the subjective nature of the researched construct. The purpose of this study is comparative analysis of models of professional well-being and different approaches to their construction. In accordance with the purpose of the study, general scientific theoretical methods were applied, such as comparison, generalization and systematization of data. Existing models are characterized by a variety of structural elements, are often overloaded with components and don't always have a clear mechanism for the formation of the subjective well-being of an individual. Therefore, it is advisable to continue searching for the optimal model of professional activity that creates conditions for achieving professional well-being

Market Share as a Performance Measure: A Conceptual Framework

    Get PDF
In this article, the author provides an overview of the literature in the market share research and proposes a comprehensive model which can empirically investigate the relationship between market share and profitability. Also, several potential theoretically-driven moderators that may have impact on the MS-Profitability relationship are identified and included in the proposed model. Of the moderators, the author divides them into two different groups: firm-specific and market-specific. The difference between these two groups can also further provide business managers some implications for their practices

A Matter of Mindset: The Benefit of a Growth Mindset After a Career Shock

    Get PDF
The COVID pandemic has created a career shock felt around the world. This study examines the negative effect the pandemic has had on an individual’s career perception, career satisfaction, and career choice commitment. Using a cross-sectional design and a sample of 112 individuals working in the hospitality and tourism industry, findings indicate that the pandemic has had a significant negative influence on an individual’s career perception, career satisfaction, and career choice commitment. Furthermore, an individual’s mindset moderates this relationship such that those with a growth mindset (i.e., those who feel things can change through effort) indicated a less negative career perception and career choice satisfaction than those individuals with a more entity mindset (i.e., those who feel things cannot change through effort). These results suggest that cultivating a growth mindset could be an important factor in successfully responding to a career shock and possibly, in general, more resilient in times of uncertainty. &nbsp

Attitude Towards Online Product Endorsement Using Digital Celebrities: The Case of Laptops

    Get PDF
Although the broad concept of celebrity endorsement is not new, the popularity of its Social Media version skyrocketed over the last several years, being exploited even by notorious and top-tier companies. A substantial body of academic research approached the traditional celebrities’ endorsement, leaving rather unstudied the impact of digital celebrities’ endorsement power. Aiming at reducing the literature gap, the present study investigated the audience’s attitude towards online endorsement that includes famous vloggers (a category of digital celebrities) and its effect on future behaviors. In this sense, a conceptual model was tested using the structural equation modeling technique in the context of a primary research. The results unveiled that the perceived characteristics of the celebrity reflect on the overall attitude towards the vlogger. Despite influencing the attitude towards endorsed products, video content, product recommendation and engagement on source’s Social Media channel, the attitude towards the celebrity didn’t have a direct effect on purchase intention. The attitude towards the video content affected the attitude towards the product and both were shown to have a positive influence on purchase intention and recommendation. Yet, only the first one reflected on actions concerning celebrity’s online platform

Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to Saudi Arabian Banking Employees

    Get PDF
Globalization in the banking industry has demonstrated one of the most significant necessities of today, English for Specific Purposes (ESP)-based curricula. ESP drives contemporary organizations to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and competitors across geographical boundaries. Therefore, it is imperative to examine learners’ needs and difficulties while using ESP in practice to achieve this goal effectively. This study aims to examine the skills of bankers learning or using English as a Second Language (ESL) to assist them in meeting their jobs’ needs in the banking sector. An online survey (n = 43) and interview (n= 39) were employed to collect data to understand the aspects vital to the teaching of ESP among banking professionals from Saudi Arabia. About 60% of the sample admitted they needed to improve their English-speaking skills, with more than 80% citing that it is essential for their profession. The interviewees also highlighted English writing skills as being more critical to their needs and desired to enhance their speaking and writing skills. The interviewees further revealed that poor English, difficulty in understanding accents, and insufficient knowledge of banking terminology hindered their communication with customers. The article suggests pedagogical implications and recommendations to support employers in the banking sector, ESP teachers, and curricula designers for improving the current ESP design and delivery in Saudi Arabia

How Teachers’ Perceptions of Learners’ Willingness to Communicate Affect Frequency and Method of Turn Allocation

    Get PDF
Previous research on willingness to communicate (Henceforth WTC) has shown that several teacher factors can affect learners’ WTC. However, the effect of teachers’ perceptions of learners’ WTC on teachers’ communicative and instructional behavior has remained understudied. This study aimed to examine how teachers’ perceptions of learners’ WTC affected the frequency and method of their turn allocations. The in-depth study was conducted with three teachers in Iran over a period of one semester. Qualitative data were obtained from observations, audio and video recordings of classroom interaction, and interviews with teachers. Analysis revealed that teachers gave more voluntary turns to those whom they perceived to have a higher level of WTC. Also, the method of turn allocation was different for such students. These findings are important because they can raise awareness among teachers and enable them to ensure all learners are given opportunities to participate

Do Polyglots Have Exceptional Language Aptitudes?

    Get PDF
Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in case studies and surveys by researchers of second language acquisition (SLA) and cognitive (neuro-)science to probe into the group of exceptionally talented multilingual learners or polyglots who can understand and speak an impressive number of multiple foreign languages other than their own mother tongue. The current paper reviews these latest developments and elucidates the phenomenon of (hyper-) polyglottism by tracing and analyzing its definitions and synthesizing and highlighting the key findings of case studies and large-scale surveys. Specifically, we aim to illuminate the complex and intricate relationships between hyperpolyglots’ exceptional multilingual talents and their individual differences in language aptitude and other cognitive abilities such as IQ, personality traits, motivational characteristics, and language genetic variations, as well as their brain mechanisms and neural networks. The present paper calls upon concerted efforts from multiple disciplines to determine the critical cognitive abilities and pivotal developmental stages underlying the exceptional performance of these multilingual talents and hyperpolyglots
