Technological Leapfrogging and Manufacturing Value-added in sub-Saharan African

This study examines the impact of technological leapfrogging on manufacturing value-added in SSA. The study utilizes secondary data spanning 1990 to 2018. The data is analyzed using cross-sectional autoregressive distributed lags (CS-ARDL) and cross-sectional distributed lags (CS-DL) techniques. The study found that technological leapfrogging is a positive driver of manufacturing value-added in SSA. That is, increase in technological leapfrogging boosts manufacturing value-added in SSA. This implies that the SSA does not need to repeat the process of dirty and wasteful old technologies in their bid to spur industrialization and manufacturing upgrading. This study reveals that technological leapfrogging does not hurt manufacturing productivity in SSA. Rather, the sub-Saharan African countries can plan out a proactive technological leapfrogging agenda to spur industrialization and manufacturing development in the manner of the Asian Tigers. It only requires the governments of SSA to reinforce their absorptive capacity and beef up productivity through proper utilization of the existing technology. The productive activities of the domestic firms will stir new innovations and discoveries that will eventually translate into indigenous technology that will sustain productivity in the long run. &nbsp

The results revealed that the coefficient of foreign income at lag one and the gross domestic product lagged by two-year period had direct relationship with the manufacturing sector implying enhancement in the manufacturing sector. That of exports and the ratio of foreign price to domestic price established negative coefficient contrary to a priori expectation. The implication of this result is that there could be instabilities during the period of study and the effect did not yield the desire result in relationship with the manufacturing sector The study concludes that globalization enhanced the manufacturing sector through a rise in the gross domestic product and foreign income. Therefore, the study recommends expansionary fiscal policy to enhance investment as this will stimulate productive economy thereby increasing the volume of exports and the ratio of foreign price to domestic price gears towards manufacturing sector growth through globalization means

IMPACT OF SECTORAL ECONOMIC GROWTH ON ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN NIGERIA

This study investigated the applicability of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound approach in examining the impact of GDP growth per capita of agricultural, industrial and service sectors on ecological footprint in Nigeria. Findings revealed that agriculture sector growth per capita has a positive impact on ecological footprint in the long run, a percent change in agriculture will lead to a 0.47percent significant change in ecological footprint. The industrial growth per capita has a negative non-significant impact as a percent change in IND will lead to a 0.1 percent decrease on ecological footprint in the long run and per capita growth of service sector has negative significant impact as a percent change in SEV will lead to a 0.6 percent decrease on ecological footprint in the long run. Other control variables such as population growth also has a negative non-significant impact on ecological footprint, a percent change in POPG will lead to a 0.8 percent decrease on ecological footprint while trade openness in the long run has a positive significant impact of 0.5 percent on ecological footprint. The findings confirm the long run inverse u-shaped relationship between sectoral economic growth and ecological footprint during the period of study as we see the change from the positive impact of agriculture to the negative impact service sector has on ecological footprint. The paper concludes that sectoral economic growth in Nigeria follows the predictions of the EKC, confirming that as the economy evolves, economic growth will have a negative relationship with environmental degradation. The study recommends given more attention to reducing pollution due to agricultural activities such as excess fertilizer chemicals and application, overgrazing and deforestation and agricultural greenhouse emission in the downstream agriculture sub-sector
